This is a natural bookshelf backdrop??? Nobody's home bookshelves looks like this. It looks like an airport bookshelf, displaying just best sellers face out and no other decoration...
@zeit6614 That he said he was going to have this bookshelf background until he moved or died? That he asked for shelf roast of his shelf in the video? And that this is awful. The last shelf setup before his most recent move was great, so so nice. This is the opposite of all that.
I'm to old for the influencer look of the book shelves, I'm partial to the dark antique looking ones. But guess what, it's a few worlds and we all can do what we like with our own living spaces!
I think the funny thing with Superman is that it's less of a new take and more of an incredibly traditional take. It's just been so long lol... I'm so excited for it!
Reading the Way of Kings for the first time, and as a screenwriter it sort of reads like a screenplay. It describes action in a very clear and concise way that would make it easy for someone to adapt, but it is a book that would basically be a full 12 hour-long episode show. I don't know if the market is really ready for something like that with Rings of Power and Wheel of Time not doing so hot.
" I don't know if the market is really ready for something like that with Rings of Power and Wheel of Time not doing so hot." Those aren't doing so hot because the writing is bad on both. WoT especially just sort of ingnores the books because it wants to do something more Game of Thronesey... filling it with uber violence and gore and massively changing book plot points in ways that aren't needed. (ANd I know different mediums, and adaptation has its own demands on pacing and using locaitons due ot budget, changes are fine. But the changes they chose, oof.) . so it ticks off the fans of the books, and is missing the appeal and character work that made the books great in the first place. It's a decent production in its own right, the actors are fine and it has a budget... but its a pretty bad adaptation.
@@robbybevard8034 Yeah, but I feel the execs who would greenlight a potential Stormlight show would think that "Yeah big fantasy epic, kinda like Wheel of Time, by one of the WoT authors, it's gonna be the same thing and not do well enough to justify the budget" (Yes this is stupid, but it increasingly feels like Hollywood studios thinks like this. I guess good storytelling is hard to show on a graph.)
Watching Brandon's spoiler Q&A at Dragonsteel he spoke about his thoughts on adaptations and his focus on ensuring he has a team that is both talented but also passionate about the project gives me confidence and hope that when we finally do get a Cosmere adaptation, it won't be an infuriating cash grab hack job.
Thats the hope I have as well, there so much chaotic wonder in Sandersons books it gives crazies like me a chance 😅. I love traditional epic fantasy, but I also like when people turn on fantasy head on fun ways without it coming off well mean spirited. My own hope I can hit the ball somewhere and get even a handful of people to be as passionate about my lore and worlds and casts as Sanderson fans like us are of his
Mistborn would be way better as an animation tv series, from the same people who did Scavengers Reign or Arcane. I'm hoping the NDA for those six steps wasn't very long and we get to see concept artist posting their work on it soon. Mistborn, Hyperion and Red Rising are some adaptations that should be debuting NOW to surf on the hype of Fantasy/sci-fi adaptations, they are perfect to be adapted because they are very cinematic with great worldbuilding.
@@FreeKnilly wait, WHAT?! did I understand you alright? How come that would be a waste and a lack of ambition? there's nothing more ambitious in the realm of audiovisual medium than A high quality animation series/movie. Animation gives the creative team total control on the visual language and is less apt to to ditch entire plotlines or scenes because of budget/VFX/casting/ or any technical restrictions... the only obstacle is higher ups on the production company which is far worse in live action movies. There are multiple examples of even recent animations proving how superior it can be compared to liveaction for telling fantasy/sci-fi stories.
A live action cosmere adaption would be amazing, but there are some series, such as the stormlight archive, that are so expansive that it would be rough trying to avoid very noticeable aging in the cast. And that's not even taking into account that only half of that is done. Assuming a ten year gap in the story between the two halves, there will be a bit of grace there. Plus there's some leeway given that some worldhoppers have different appearances in the various worlds. Still, animation would make that a whole lot better as far as actor continuity.
Biggest fear for the Cosmere would be rights issues. Like if Mistborn gets a animated show owned by Netflix but Stormlight a movie series owned by Disney. Does one have the rights to "Wit" and the other "Hoid" ? You would end up in a huge mess about who got what characters
@@311connorf Yeah that too. But live action would create similar problems. What happens if Hoid’s actor decides he’s done playing the role? What if we get a Cosmere cinematic universe, and over the years, Hoid’s actor visibly ages even though the character is supposed to be immortal? (SPOILERS for The Bands of Mourning, The Lost Metal, and Mistborn: Secret History) . . . What if they get a big name actor for Kelsier in the first Mistborn movie, but years later when he comes back as Thaidakar, they can’t get the same actor again for whatever reason? Animation would make a cohesive interconnected universe so much easier to adapt, because all you have to do is draw the characters the way they’re supposed to look, and get a VA with a voice that fits.
A few years ago I was against the cosmere to start out as an animation, but at this point idc. Just give me something for gods sake, even a comic would be fine 😭
AFIK, Solo Leveling stays true to the manga. I couldn't get past the first 15min of the 1st episode of The Wheel of Time because of the discrepencies. I am looking forward to season 2 of Solo Leveling staring in January!
Hasn't Disney produced shows specifically for Disney+, which did get aired on the platform, but then got removed? I do not understand the math for how selling a finished product isn't as profitable as putting it out in the world...
Love the Fantasy News, thanks for all the work you all do to make these so entertaining, and I love the shelf tour! We can only home someone with enough understanding about rabid fandoms finally gets a foothold somewhere in Hollywood and can cash in on all these series that would adapt amazingly into other mediums; all it takes is one Sanderson property rocketing for the wolves to be at the door begging for more.
With Sanderson adaptations, and maybe this is tied to the cover of the versions I read from the library recently during a re-read, I think Mistborn (especially Era 1, but not not the Wax and Wayne stuff) would work best as an animated. Maybe Arcane style, but I'm thinking more anime. Like, the kind of stuff you see in a Naruto or Cowboy Beebop, a little exaggerated, not entirely realistic, would make a good fit for the way I pictured Kelsier and Vin moving. Obviously, if Yumi ever gets adapted, that would have to be a limited run or feature length anime. Elantris and Warbreaker I think would work better in live-action (though, the use of color in it could make Warbreaker work in the Arcane style). Obviously, were Tress ever made into a movie, it should take as much stylistic inspiration from "The Princess Bride" as possible. Stormlight would probably have to be animated (though I think it would work in live action) just because the cost of CGI-ing all the spren in the world would be super expensive. It probably makes sense as a show, with the interludes done the way Wheel of Time season 1 did with those shorts (aka the best part of WoT season 1). Little worldbuilding shorts for those who want them. Would basically have to adopt each part of the Cosmere separately, because so much stylistic variety.
Sanderson to movie execs: “it’s not about the money, it’s about [making a good movie adaptation].” I think his recent comments he’s made in a few places about wanting to find a director that truly has passion about the source material is the most encouraging. I don’t necessarily want Sanderson to play a super involved role in the writing (I definitely want him to have a say and input, but screenwriting is very different than novel writing), but I am more afraid of some snuffy writer who wants to make it their project and vision (e.g., some of the comments from the HP series writers is highly discouraging). I know it’s a large task (and why an adaptation has taken and my continue to take so long), but waiting for a talented directors (and others) who sincerely want to keep the spirit of the source material while also being given liberty from Sanderson to make needed book to movie changes is what I am hoping for.
for manga news. happy to see who is voicing franky now he did great in all the other animes. in anime catching up to the manga is a big problem and older anime like bleach and naruto had to do so many fuller arcs because they were right behind the manga. and solo leving isnt a manga its a manhwa (korean comic) and in my opinion its not that good
Basically every Sanderson book I've read felt built for adaptation. Can easily visualise a lot of what's going on and see how it can translate to screen. Elantris for example can easily be made into a movie, it probably will be cheapest too since the whole premise is that the magic is gone so no special CGI required. Either way, I have faith in Brandon that he'll do everything in his power for us to get the best adaptation we can get, I'm ok waiting, even though I'm dying to see 'Honor is dead, but I'll see what I can do' spoken
@@pokedoctor2087 same - a series would work better for the different characters and events to be displayed as well. Even a movie for each book in the trilogy would leave out - in my opinion - way too much.
When I worked in comic books, I had two books optioned by some fairly big studios-and yeah, much ado about nothing. But I'll still take the check. It may be a while before we get a Cosmere film/TV series. A lot of moving parts.
Daniel, please read Tower of God! It’s Korea’s version of One Piece in terms of world-building, lore, and plot! Season 3 has ended and it is on hiatus till season 4 with spinoffs coming back later. That is all I ask of you!
I got real sick of the story cycle (new level, rando chars, explain a bunch of game rules, protag wins fight, new level) after a few hundred chapters. What do you think of it as a long-term story? How does it keep your attention?
@@feathercompressor The world-building, the lore, the stakes, and character goals are what keep me going. Which season did you stop at? Was it season 1, season 2 or the beginning of season 3? The story is fine for me long term, there is so much lore and intrigue for me. It's more than just games and random character reveals. You have to pay attention to everything. This manhwa is for those who are willing enough. I'm glad it was worth a shot for you. At least you gave it a chance. 😊
I know Sanderson has said "I want to find a way to hit all the age ranges if I'm going to take my properties to the world of animation" but Hollywood is fickle and it just isn't gonna work. HBO might let him do the Stormlight Archive or even Mistborn with the level of control he wants. But the clear cut answer to do the Cosmere now is animation. And that will open the door for live action, when it succeeds after being animated.
Yeah, _One Piece_ has been caught up pretty much the entire time the manga has been running. I think before it was _Dragon Ball Z_ having a policy of "one chapter, one episode" and while _One Piece_ ain't exactly that strict, it still causes major problems for the pacing. But if you want the longest-running caught-up series I think you'd have to look to gag manga, which is out of my wheelhouse.
Problem with animation is that it just doesn’t get the same traction as live action. Don’t get me wrong, we book/movie/gaming nerds will always watch it but there’s a huge gap between us and the mainstream, middle aged family man/woman. I would be fine with Mistborn as an animation but IMO it DESERVES the big stage that shows like Game of Thrones and Wheel of Time got. It deserves to stop people’s Sunday’s in houses all around the world. And become a main topic of conversation among groups of people that would never watch fantasy if not for the cultural impact it’s having.
Yeah 1 in 100 proposed projects get into a finished movie and yet, somehow, they ony pick the shitty ones to make and cancel the good ones. Most of my favourite shows were canceled and i will never forgive them for it lol (Hannibal, Flash Forward, Shadow & Bone to name a few)
One Piece is up to date with its Manga because if they hadn't pushed out so many fillers and taken breaks, they'd be literal years ahead of the Manga. Oda simply cannot keep the pace with the team at studio Toei.
Speaking of Solo-leveling and manhwas, I hope you check out Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint someday! I've only read ORV, but I hear that readers of both series tend to agree that ORV is a more well-written series despite the superficial similarities between the two. And I definitely agree that ORV has a lot of depth that delves a lot into the themes of storytelling itself, which I think might capture your interest.
I don’t know how Solo leveling’s physical copy is like given that it was made for web toon format but hope the formatting works.. since half the fun of the manhwa was because of its incredible art and formatting for the web.
Because I am extremely jealous, I am sad to see most of my fav fantasy books get ignored whilst Romantasy gets a million adaptation movement these days.
The solo leveling joke was on point… no roast for the shelf because age of madness is next to focus of attention and that is the only place it belongs to, well done.
Honestly the only way I can think of the Mistborn series being done justice is if it were animated and produced by the same studio that made Arcane, which would never happen cause they'll be making Riot stuff until the end of time.
Ugh. I don't like the train of thought that studios have agendas or whatever, but since we've seen a bit of that with Wheel of Time and anything tied to Disney I can't help but wonder if that's why the whole "we did that step for you" got shut down... I was hopeful for some kind of a One Piece type scenario. Maybe someday 🤷♂️
I was hoping the new Wheel of Time editions, would be priced the same as the current Dragonsteel leatherbounds. Granted the move to $125 for the regular leatherbounds, and to $250 for the Stormlight specials has already pushed those out of my ability to purchase, so I guess it doesn't matter either way.

As someone with (just a little) Hollywood experience, I’ve always felt that the Mistborn process was a bit naive and I was not hopeful. I don’t think his preferred creative control is going to translate overall and when he said he wanted to write the script himself, I lost more hope. Cosmere work is very abstract, maximalist and fussy (to translate to screen). Some of the best things about his work would be a disaster on screen. I say all this as a fan, too.
6:20 I honestly like the idea of making books like war breaker, and ELANTRA into animated series and then make storm light archive and Miss Bourne into live action movies
I actually thought that Warbreaker and Elantra would be the easiest Cosmere books to turn into live action series. I feel like Mistborn and Stormlight would need to be animated because doing them in live action is going to be crazy hard and expensive. It will be interesting to see what happens.
The One Piece anime was roughly 1 year behind the manga. But unfortunately Oda’s taking more and more breaks each year, which reduces slowly the gap between the two. Good for Oda but a bit concerning for the anime pacing.
I worked in a development studio a few years ago, in '19. I was the first line of reading books and short stories, so I'd read, then say if it was worthy enough for the executive assistants to CONSIDER. The 1/100 stat was definitely accurate there. I even turned down a short story by William Shatner. It was probably the most boring Sci fi short story I read there. God, I WISH I got some better fantasy stories
It's kinda weird. He's the biggest name in Fantasy right now. Maybe what's making it difficult is the Cosmere aspect of it? It's basically a whole Marvel universe thing that needs to be committed to.

This is a natural bookshelf backdrop??? Nobody's home bookshelves looks like this. It looks like an airport bookshelf, displaying just best sellers face out and no other decoration...
Its obviously just a content background bookshelf idk what you are trying to say here 😂
@zeit6614 That he said he was going to have this bookshelf background until he moved or died? That he asked for shelf roast of his shelf in the video? And that this is awful. The last shelf setup before his most recent move was great, so so nice. This is the opposite of all that.
WOOO a good Christmas Eve upload to start my morning with!
That's what I was thinking, definitely not a new take, but a true to comics take for once!
" I don't know if the market is really ready for something like that with Rings of Power and Wheel of Time not doing so hot."
Those aren't doing so hot because the writing is bad on both.
@@robbybevard8034 Yeah, but I feel the execs who would greenlight a potential Stormlight show would think that "Yeah big fantasy epic, kinda like Wheel of Time, by one of the WoT authors, it's gonna be the same thing and not do well enough to justify the budget"
(Yes this is stupid, but it increasingly feels like Hollywood studios thinks like this.
Hyperion would be SICK
the desire for animated adaptations in the cosmere are a waste of the stories written and show a complete lack of ambition from this community.
@@FreeKnilly animation isn't lesser than live action though lol
@@FreeKnillyHow is it a waste to use an often superior medium?
I'm so envious of those Illumicrate Green Bone Saga. None of the other printings have been that beautiful.
I'm completely done with adaptations and movies or tv shows of great books. I'm happy to hear that they don't get made.
Olivia Williams is in the new Dune show. She seems very capable of sci-fi fantasy roles.
I've loved her in everything I've seen especially in Peter Pan and Dollhouse
Im offended on behalf of Nerdforge that your single WoT edition is on the floor and not 100% visible.
He stated that there's going to be a shelf added for it. We just have to wait
I don't like that the shelves don't line up. I think that will take my brain a long time to get used to
A live action cosmere adaption would be amazing, but there are some series, such as the stormlight archive, that are so expansive that it would be rough trying to avoid very noticeable aging in the cast.
I'm devastated! I can't describe how I feel about the cancellation 🥺
I think the Cosmere is hyper-adaptable if you do it in animation. It’s much less adaptable if you try to force live action, imo
(SPOILERS for The Bands of Mourning, The Lost Metal, and Mistborn: Secret History)
.
.
You are a legend Daniel!! Enjoy the holidays/new year you deserve it
Solo Levelling is amazing. Every time a new release drops through my letterbox I’m so excited.
AFIK, Solo Leveling stays true to the manga. I couldn't get past the first 15min of the 1st episode of The Wheel of Time because of the discrepencies. I am looking forward to season 2 of Solo Leveling staring in January!
Hi Daniel, for future reference, solo leveling isn’t a manga. It’s a manhwa because it’s Korean, I believe it’s also acceptable to call it a webtoon.
Manhwa is just the korean term for the japanese manga; so is the chinese term Manhua. Lets just call it manga for simplicity
We've seen COMPLETED movies that have been ditched in recent years. I was really excited for Coyote vs. Roadrunner...
Hasn't Disney produced shows specifically for Disney+, which did get aired on the platform, but then got removed?
I do not understand the math for how selling a finished product isn't as profitable as putting it out in the world...
*Coyote vs Acme
Love the Fantasy News, thanks for all the work you all do to make these so entertaining, and I love the shelf tour! We can only home someone with enough understanding about rabid fandoms finally gets a foothold somewhere in Hollywood and can cash in on all these series that would adapt amazingly into other mediums; all it takes is one Sanderson property rocketing for the wolves to be at the door begging for more.
4:40 - 💯%! Don't get too excited, until you hear something is filming / has finished filming......and gets an officially scheduled release!
Seeing you picking up Solo Leveling has me hoping you'll read Omniscient Readers Viewpoint someday.
SMOOOOOOOOTH AD cut bro. A+++
Merry Christmas 🎉
Easily one of my favorite channels
I'm not big on the shelves, too minimal
Sir, you need your shelf roasting license revoked. What were you thinking.
Sanderson to movie execs: “it’s not about the money, it’s about [making a good movie adaptation].”
I think his recent comments he’s made in a few places about wanting to find a director that truly has passion about the source material is the most encouraging.
One piece has been pretty caught up for a long time. It's why episodes are often mixed with filler, as opposed to having filler arcs like other anime
"They want minds" going perfectly with the video was nuts😂😂😂😂
22:05
for manga news. happy to see who is voicing franky now he did great in all the other animes. in anime catching up to the manga is a big problem and older anime like bleach and naruto had to do so many fuller arcs because they were right behind the manga. and solo leving isnt a manga its a manhwa (korean comic) and in my opinion its not that good
To be fair to Hollywood. They did make a pretty good DND movie( Honor Among Thiefs) and people still didnt watch it.
The LOTR anime also bombed
Thanks for the update! Gosh Im never this early
I don't understand how an NDA can still stand once a project has been canceled.
That cut at 22:13 had me laughing my ass off at work!
Still holding out for a Stormlight animated series ala Last Airbender & Blue Eye Samurai
Olivia Williams is also in Dune: Prophecy!
Where she does an impressive job.
my coworker is so upset that he won’t be able to finish the Stormlight Archive before he dies.. He’s in his 60s 😢
I'd love a Mistborn Series Much more than a Movie
Ps: I miss the Pikachu Funko
The lamp thing takes up more space than the 7 books on those shelves.
What? You mean you don't want a Minecraft movie?
Man reading the name Flash Forward makes me sad. I loved the premise of that show.
@@CP-pz9vw I know right? It was so interesting and intriguing
Daniel pleaseeee out of all the manga/mahnwa you could read, you chose Solo Levelling 😭
should have read evangelion
@johnsmith-jq1uc Are we ready for that though? 😂
😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨
Tower of God for me, personally.
Ew
Hey Daniel, where'd you get that sweater? I like
I'm def most excited over Lini too. I actually was worried the other day when we got the first batch of castings that she was cut. Glad I was wrong!
Hearing the goblin say “bars” like that made my day
So you're telling me I still have a chance (to direct the Mistborn movie)?
You deserver a thumbs up for the ending of the Mistborn segment.
Wheel of Time down there on the floor 😭
So happy you mentioned it’s getting its own shelf.
The solo leveling joke was on point… no roast for the shelf because age of madness is next to focus of attention and that is the only place it belongs to, well done.
Love the video. One note: Solo Leveling is a manhwa! cause its korean.
13:17 i feel called out...
Noo…. So sad… proper bookshelves are supreme
His new bookshelf is like the funkopop version of a bookshelf. Big heads, look at the stars you know about. It's like posters on the wall of a teenage girl of bands they like :D
Daniel I fucking love you. I also decided that in 2025 ill finaly read your books. Here is to Daniel Greene, the best booktuber to ever exist!! (Yes i'm drunk as fuck, but being drunk makes me more open to how i feel)
Have you seen the 2003 Peter Pan? Olivia Williams is Mrs. Darling in that. She was also Adelle DeWitt in _Dollhouse,_ if you saw that.
Dude, ep 7 of Dan Da Dan is so fucking good. Cried my eyes out.
I really want to see “The Emperor’s Soul” as a movie.
A week without fantasy news is a week without fantasy news...
You should add the Dune hardback to your shelf, it's a beautiful book!
Oh gods, it's tuesday, isn't it? I thought it was Friday
Bookshellf hype!!!
It's kinda weird. He's the biggest name in Fantasy right now. Maybe what's making it difficult is the Cosmere aspect of it? It's basically a whole Marvel universe thing that needs to be committed to.
6:45 woah, the cigarre changed into a drink! Is there a Sanderson magic system at work that I haven't come across yet? Someone should look into that...
I wish the black company books were printed as hardcovers with the kindle covers
Sanderson should form his own studio, production company and do it all himself. BTW, I purchased that typewriter new when I was in college. 😁 BTW2, water that lonely plant.
Sanderson is rich, but he's not movie studio rich.
@@robbybevard8034 These days you don't need a lot of money to run an independent film studio. I'm sure he could find the investors. He wants control of his franchise, and I don't blame him. Screw Hollywood. Just do it yourself.
