  • Today I'm reviewing Monster Sanctuary for the Nintendo Switch, a near perfect game! It's a metroidvania monster collector that has so much depth it's staggering. Collect monsters and use their exploration abilities to traverse the world, then level them up and fill out their full ARPG skill trees to make the perfect team! It's so much fun with so many possibilities for teams, it will keep you playing long after the credits roll.

    How many times did I accidentally call this game "Monster Hunter?" And what game should I play next?

    This game is a masterpiece, brought it for both Xbox and switch, about to play through a third time to 100% it. The extra little details they put in this game is very heartwarming and showed how much the devs care about their work. Can't wait for a possible sequel or anything else they're working on currently. Highly recommended.

    I’ve had pretty much the same experience as you with Monster Sanctuary :) Other indie games that got me good this year are:
    - Souldiers (gotta play it on PS5 though, due to insane loading times on Switch)
    - Tunic
    - Death’s Door
    - Sydney Hunter
    - Willy Jetman
    - Trails from Zero

      Trails from Zero is not an indie. But good picks nonetheless!

    Bizarrely negative comment section. This game is cool. Modern pokemon is brainless slop.

    I just beat nexomon extinction before playing this game and did not realize it was a pokemon like. Unfortunately it was the worst timing for me since I could not stop comparing it to the compelling and witty story of nexomon.

      Story wise this game for sure isn't it. But the gameplay is incredible and worth it for sure

    Interesting mix of genres in this one. Personally I enjoy the look of the game as I'm a big Pixel art fan, but I do see where it could be improved. My guess would be that the amount of sprites needed for monsters is ook away from detail in each sprite.
    Oddly enough the sticking point for me is the Metroidvania structure as I've never truly enjoyed them when I've picked them up, despite being the same idea as a traditional pokemon game for path exploration it just doesn't pull me in. I guess I prefer my side scrolling to be more Mario or megaman, but enjoy exploring in an isometric or top down style where I'm not also jumping around so momentum & level hazards / enemies aren't involved the same way.

      This one definitely won't change your mind on the metroidvania genre but it may be worth sticking through for the monster battling side of it. Since you get all traversal abilities pretty easily it's definitely not too crazy

    1. I suck at metroidvanias. Don't you simply mean platform-oriented?
    2. And how does it look on handheld switch? Can you read the text?
    3. can you name monsters in switch? how does selecting a letter work then?

    • @capn_sarge
      @capn_sarge  7 місяців тому +1

      Yes it's a metroidvania only in the platforming. The combat is turn based. But I say metroidvania since you unlock traversal abilities as you play, in this case catching the monsters that have the ability. I thought it looked and played great on switch! All footage in my video was captured with the switch. When you go to name them a keyboard pops up on screen and you use the d pad to type out the letters.

    I had fun at the start but the game started feeling really grindy. It's kind of hindered by that "one more level" aspect because until you get those levels and get those those different perks it's pretty slow going and tedious.
    It just seems really out of balance the all six of my monsters are the same level but there's one that can do 60 to 70% of a monster's health bar while every other monster that's the same level only does 10-20%
    Idk skill trees just give me anxiety, the ones in this game are particularly annoying because you can put skill points just about anywhere and the game really drives home the point that each monster has a different skill set.
    It just feels like I'm not making enough progress or proper skill selections and it's making my monsters comparatively weaker

      I dont think you understand how combo meter works in yhis game. The reason why one of your monster hits like a truck is because other 2 builds the combo multiplier and the final one reaping it

    This is one of the only games I bought on three systems, if not the only one. One of the more annoying things in games are endless ability animations, and this game does it perfectly with the speed options. But holy shit I couldn't stand the 6 man party battles. The sun tower battle was where I quit every time.

    • @capn_sarge
      @capn_sarge  Рік тому

      Yeah the game is so clearly balanced for 3v3 and the 6 men teams were not implemented well I didn't think. Game is amazing though and that's a small complaint in the grand scheme of things

    Despite playing this game for a bit and not finishing it, I do respect the game, and appreciate what it was trying to do. I agree that the gameplay has excellent depth and at its best, was very engaging and fun to play.
    BUT, that's at its best. When you keep running into random mobs which require zero thought and you essentially autowin its much less fun. I suppose you could use them for leveling up new monsters, though. But if you have a good comp, you need a challenge. So, the depth was excellent when you had to use it, but that wasn't very frequently.
    The other issue is more of a genre issue with metroidvainias, which is you get lost, and its not clear where you are supposed to go, and now you are just running around lost. Thats even more unfun and also oh all the enemies have respawned.
    So the pieces are there for something great, and it can be great, but its inconsistent.

    • @capn_sarge
      @capn_sarge  2 роки тому +5

      I know what you mean about the battles but I did find that some of those encounters required some thought and tactics. It was possible to get caught on autopilot. It's the downside of the rpg genre unfortunately.
      For me the highs were so good I didn't even feel the lows.

      I'm still early game and it's just annoying that either enemies are so easy that I wish that there was an auto battle system or they're so tedious and grindy where I only do 10% of their health for an attack
