NATURAL MUMMIFICATION IS VERY RARE, requiring conditions of extreme temperatures and dry air to preserve the body. Most mummies that we’ve seen (in textbooks and museums) were mummified with a chemical process called embalming and then wrapped in linen. But Buddhist monks of Japan and Tibet have a unique method of mummification. When the monk is alive, he begins a slow process of starvation and ceases to eat barley, rice, and beans, which add fat to the body. Also, in preparation for death, he runs candles along his skin, drying it out. The monk dies of starvation in a seated pose. Fat putrefies after death, and by removing the body of fat, the monk can be better preserved. Following his death, he is then placed in an underground room for three years, to continue drying out before again being treated with candles. The monk becomes a statue in prayer. Less than thirty of these monks have been found around the world, most on the main island of Japan, Honshu.
I saw the self- mummification story on discovery years ago the monk just before his time of death went into the sitting position drank a lot of salt water and died in that position.

Self mummification is going into samadhi when alive. Saints in India are known to do that. One example is of Guru Raghavendra of Mantralayam who entered his samadhi alive. It is believed that he is still alive in a meditative state. Shirdi Saibaba also did it for three days. He told his devotee that he will leave his body for three days and to preserve his body till his return.

I wish if you could get a chance to interview Nana Patekar. I have seen your reactions on his film ‘Natasamrat’.
Self mummification: I think by self mummification they meant 'samadhi'. To know what that is, you'll need to get some information on yoga, and the final act of samadhi in it. This is the ideal kind of end of life any yogi, or any human can strive for. It's part of the great spiritual tradition of India, however only handful few enlightened ones know the way of achieving samadhi using his chakras and energies in the right way.there are several examples of saints and yogis opting samadhi to end their life in ancient and even contemporary times.
Many cultures around the world have practiced mummification, and not all of them follow the Egyptian rules for mummification. Mummification just refers to protection and preservation of the body from rotting. In this case the monk was likely an expert at yoga and had some control over his respiration and heart rate. Slowing both to as low levels as possible, he was likely able to stay alive for perhaps days in that position meditating, as he slowly froze to death. The extreme dry cold wind helped to dry him out and the low levels of oxygen likely further inhibited the living organisms that would have eaten away his tissues through rotting. Thus, a mummy who became a mummy by choice through his own final acts.
The 2nd one is not at all a mystery (Krishna's Butter Ball, Mahabalipuram). The answer is very simple, it was a great piece of stone attached with the base stone, but due weathering (agent: wind), the rock looks as if it is an individual rock. The best place to experience weathering is Mahabalipuram, formed due to the high winds blowing from the Indian Ocean.
The process of self-mummification is long and arduous, taking at minimum three years of preparation before death. Central to this preparation is a diet called mokujikigyō, literally “tree-eating training.” This diet can be traced through Shugendō to the Taoist practice of abstention from cultivated grains. For a thousand days, the mokujikigyō diet limits practitioners to only what can be foraged on the mountain, namely nuts, buds, and roots from trees. Some sources also report that berries may have entered the diet, as well as tree bark and pine needles. Time not spent foraging for food was passed in meditation on the mountain. From a spiritual perspective, this regimen was intended to toughen the spirit and distance oneself from the common human world. From a biological point of view, the severe diet rid the body of fat, muscle, and moisture while also withholding nutrients from the body’s natural biosphere of bacteria and parasites. The cumulative effect was to arrest decomposition after death.
Jeeva Samadhi or self mummification have happened with many saints & sages from the Indian subcontinent. They decide when to go and they leave the body. My great grandfather who was bed ridden called everybody( I was 8yrs old) and told us to wait for Uttarayana Punyakaala ( google it) .. and right after that moment died. This is not a strange thing in highly spiritual ppl and in the Indian context.

In yogic traditions there is something called “Samaadhi” which is a process where the yogis/yoginis with their yogic practices seprates themselves (the soul) from their body (vessel for soul). Yogi who takes samadhi could still be alive may be in astral body or taken another vessel in their next birth or could have achieved libration or moksha.
Self mammufication is an elaborate process which start with a reduced diet up to the point that they eats few grains in a whole day. For the last few months monks drink a special herbal mix which is toxic and starts the mummufication process from inside.after a particular time period the monk moves to a special chamber with a small door ;which has ventilation other than a tiny hole for air circulation. Monk meditates in lotus position and rings a small bell continuously .other monks waits for few days. When the sound of bell stops the chamber is covered permanently, after few years the chamber is opened and if all conditions were good the body becomes a mummy which is dressed and placed in shrines. Some times it doesn't work as planned and mummification doesn't occurs and the bodies get cremated. According to them mummified monks are in deep meditation and can come back to life if they wish.
Yoga in US and west is still in its infancy, Yoga as school of thought and discipline is a whole sea of knowledge. For example when intensity of meditation reaches to its ultimate level a Yogi can leave his/her body. And there are yogis who have demonstrated this ability. So self mummification although I have never heard of such kind of yogic phenomenon may still be possibility.
