Did You Know In PINOCCHIO…

  • There is an early nod to the title character’s potential fate should he go to a certain place. When Honest John is trying to coax Pinocchio into going to Pleasure Island, he hands over a card which has an Ace of Spades on it, calling it his ticket. It is known in myths that the Ace of Spades is seen as the “Death Card”. This hints at Pinocchio being in mortal danger should he venture to the mischievous island, on the count that he’ll technically be no more should he fully turn into a donkey whilst there. It may also hint at Pinocchio’s short death at the end of the movie.

If you watch the tavern scene with Honest John, Gideon, and the Coachman, Honest John had no problem with offing someone. But when the Coachman told them his plans of bringing stupid little boys to Pleasure Island, Honest John was gripped by fear.
The way I interpreted it, the irony of that scene is that being turned into a donkey is a fate worse than death itself. After all, if you die as a human, you still retained your dignity and agency as one. But being stripped of your humanity, being turned into what is considered a dumb beast in Italian culture, and then sold into what is effectively slavery, that is a bridge too far, even for someone unscrupulous like Honest John.
Basically, life is not unique to the human condition, but liberty and the capacity to make our own choices are. Take that away from a person, and you effectively strip them of their humanity, basically making them no more than a beast or a piece of property to be used and disposed of once you've outlived your usefulness.
That's why I think Honest John was fine with one thing, but not the other.

That scene is a perfect example of the saying, "Money is the root of all evil." Honest John said he'd stoop to any low. Despite showing fear in what the Coachman's evil plan was, he still went through with it. Proving he would stoop to any low. Whether it's stealing a person's life, or stealing a child's freedom.
