With the 180kWh battery option, that's going to be over 15hrs to charge at home with the 11.5kW charger. I live in AZ and we have a 6hr window of Super off Peak rates for EV charging. 80Amp vehicle capability is must for manufacturers to provide in the near future.

Great review! Do people actually take $100K SUVs off road? Hope Rivian makes smaller, less capable, cheaper EVs. I'd buy Rivian because American made without Musk.
A small dent in the bumper will cost over $40,000 to fix as this vehicle is made in 1 body panel. Once they address this issue this will make for a very compelling vehicle.
We took delivery of our R1S on 9/22 and one word that describes it all in CAPABLE for every condition. I even found myself driving it more than our Model Y.
Lack of Carplay, even wired, is a crazy oversight for a car of this level. That will be a deal-breaker for many. Otherwise, a very good first effort, and I look forward to their smaller offerings to compete with the likes of the Volvo EX30, etc.
I don't think Carplay was an oversight and they aren't the only manufacturer not putting it in their vehicles. I'm looking forward to the R2 line as well. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide the other manufacturers like Cadillac who are not including it as well are not reading their market correctly. People want and expect CarPlay more and more, and the manufacturers who use their own system or say that whatever they have is better are simply ignoring what the customers really want. I look forward to their future cars but it is important that they try and make an attempt to gauge from potential buyers if that is some thing they are going to want on future models, since cars as cheap as Mitsubishi offer CarPlay in some form.
Great review, interesting vehicle. Too bad Rivian will be gone within three years. They lose money on everything they sell. Their sales numbers preclude long term financial viability. I wish there was better news but the numbers just don’t add up.
For a vehicle that costs over $90k, call me lazy but the lack of power up and down third row, and rear lift gate is a miss (Range rovers have it). Also wish it had teslas charger and a f150 lightning styled frunk to reduce the lift over height. Oh and more third row legroom. Third row rear air vent direction cannot be adjusted.. like come on that’s like a 10 cent piece of plastic. Sorry too lazy to edit
@@AAutoBuyersGuide oddly I think that was the biggest miss. I wish they kept the same wheel base as the truck and gave the second row bigger doors. When I test drove the r1s my foot got stuck trying to shimmy into the third row.. and I’m only 5’9 size 10 shoes and quite nimble. It would also improve ride quality. I’m looking forward to try the Kia Ev 9. Kinda bummed the cybertruck isn’t make in a cybersuv shape. Thank you for all you do!
There is no way you can tell me a vehicle you have to use the infotainment screen to adjust the air vents is the best. Don't know why just because it's electric engineers have to overthink and over engineer things that don't need it.
@@servicedriveadvocate8591quite often. Depends on if I want heat or AC, whether or not it's sunny out, and any number of things. Plus, it's another thing that I can't adjust if the screen doesn't work or the motor breaks. Not to sound like a boomer, but I have hands perfectly capable of adjusting air vents. Also, if they went through the trouble and complexity to do this just imagine how over engineered the rest of the vehicle is. Doesn't scream reliability to me.
we bought a 40A 240V charger.. plug in version. I get just under 10KW and Rivian gets around 19 miles per hour. The Rivian charger is only 32A and you get about 14 miles per hour. The external 40A charger Shockflo was under $250 shipped.
It seems like a stellar vehicle but they really should have the option to opt for a standard suspension b/c people who want to keep these for more than a few years are going to in a world of hurt fixing the air suspension esp if they off-road at all. That might be a deal breaker for some people this was aiming at.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide That depends on many things like where you live, type of charger an plug, etc. But energy density makes electric cars extremely heavy. That makes them much more expensive than they should be. And that extra weight makes them less practical and less efficient. If we could have a 120kWh battery with a volume of just 80 liters, and weighing more than 300lbs that would make electric cars much more competitive with traditional ones.
Too expensive for me too, but so is the Suburban/Yukon, Wagoneer, Expedition/Navigator, Sequoia, all of which are similarly priced and quite successful models.
@williamerazo3921 more can not than can though. By a wide margin. The integration of so many functions into a couple buttons and a screen is not user friendly. Yesterday one of these pulled up next to me at a stop light. I checked out the panel gaps while waiting. Not good. You can't lose $33,000 per vehicle sold and stay in business forever. Unlike Tesla, I don't see this company surviving.
The new 2025 model will have a Tri-Motor level that is more powerful than this Quad Motor with 850 HP 0-60 in 2.9 seconds. Price: $105k. Available: Summer 2024
Why do all the reviewers get the rear climate controls WRONG? Rivian’s only have 2 zone climate control. Left and right side only! The rear touch panel does NOT allow for any temperature adjustments, it only displays the temperature set by people in front.

You will loose some range in the winter. I see about 50 mile loss in MN with the Launch Edition R1S (quad motor middle pack). Yes, the 2 motor is all wheel drive. Yes, Rivian has signed up for NACS. I believe they will begging shipping built in 2025 built in to the vehicles (Although R2 will go with it right away). Current Rivian owners get access to the Superchargers and adaptors starting Spring 2024.
The dual motor is AWD. -Travis
Great review! Do people actually take $100K SUVs off road? Hope Rivian makes smaller, less capable, cheaper EVs. I'd buy Rivian because American made without Musk.
Living in Colorado yes bought it for that purpose otherwise much cheaper EVs to buy that could fit the family.
Sure, because the CEOs of all other car companies are honest angels.😂
Have you seen how expensive Jeeps are? It's not just Rivian that is so expensive it hurts.
@@amberheywood2603 or tahoes which this competes with
Will you please review the Rivian R2 as early as you can, Alex?
A small dent in the bumper will cost over $40,000 to fix as this vehicle is made in 1 body panel. Once they address this issue this will make for a very compelling vehicle.
That fix ended up being significantly cheaper but boy did that $40,000 headline stick. -Travis
I don't like the front end. Looks like an anime character rather than elegant or rugged. Ugh.
Thomas the tank engine.
@@rodgerwill1042 OMG, now I can't unsee that! 😆
I drive a yukon for uber, this would be a dream to drive
We took delivery of our R1S on 9/22 and one word that describes it all in CAPABLE for every condition. I even found myself driving it more than our Model Y.
Spare tire?
I just realized that Alex without his glasses looks like Gru with hair from Despicable Me
Um, thanks?
Also the car has a mode that keeps it on for youtubers.
I peeped the adorable Baby picture on the phone Awesome.
Poor guy wants a hug.
Can't wait for the ev9
its a very good SUV.. we are enjoy it, specially w todya's gasoline prices. Not perfect but very good for being a new car company.
I’m sorry to say it. I look forward to their future cars but it is important that they try and make an attempt to gauge from potential buyers if that is some thing they are going to want on future models, since cars as cheap as Mitsubishi offer CarPlay in some form.
if only i could afford one 😢
Great review, interesting vehicle. Too bad Rivian will be gone within three years. They lose money on everything they sell. Their sales numbers preclude long term financial viability. I wish there was better news but the numbers just don’t add up.
Tesla didn't add up for like the first ten years of its existence and even over a year into its Model 3 production.
The Max Pack is not likely to be 180 kWh. Other outlets are reporting around 150 kWh usable.
149 kWh gross looks like…😮
For a vehicle that costs over $90k, call me lazy but the lack of power up and down third row, and rear lift gate is a miss (Range rovers have it). Also wish it had teslas charger and a f150 lightning styled frunk to reduce the lift over height. Oh and more third row legroom. Third row rear air vent direction cannot be adjusted.. like come on that’s like a 10 cent piece of plastic.
Sorry too lazy to edit
If it had more rear legroom the whole thing would need to be that much bigger and I think it's a great compromise as it stands. -Travis
Dream family car. Just wish the price was lower
Excellent! Thank you.
S-tier EV for sure.
That's a good thing, right? -Travis
I'm still not sold on the Rivian front end. Too much Fiat 500 to my eyes.
Beautiful EV, but I don't want a 3rd-row seat but am forced to buy it. No thanks, I'll wait.
See InsideEVs story from 12/26/2023: "Rivian R1T Owner Says His Truck Has Been Out For Repairs For Eight Months for a damaged side camera"
Alex, looks like you’re loosing some weight. Nice job 🤟Stay healthy friend.
There is no way you can tell me a vehicle you have to use the infotainment screen to adjust the air vents is the best. Don't know why just because it's electric engineers have to overthink and over engineer things that don't need it.
How often do you really change your vents? I’ve set mine when I bought it and haven’t really adjusted it since.
Now you should review the model X
Why? It's been out for like 30 years now.
If we are comparing three row EVs (and including the EV9 and EX90) we really should include the ID Buzz as well.
It's a 70s hippie van. Not even under consideration for most EV buyers, who probably weren't even alive in the 70s.
we bought a 40A 240V charger.. plug in version. I get just under 10KW and Rivian gets around 19 miles per hour. The Rivian charger is only 32A and you get about 14 miles per hour. The external 40A charger Shockflo was under $250 shipped.
At least until the ev9 is out and comes in 30k cheaper for the top of the line model
Spatially it may be in the same category but it won't have nearly the off pavement capability. More features tends to cost more. -Travis
It seems like a stellar vehicle but they really should have the option to opt for a standard suspension b/c people who want to keep these for more than a few years are going to in a world of hurt fixing the air suspension esp if they off-road at all. That might be a deal breaker for some people this was aiming at.
All EV have massive issues with right to repair.
180kWh for the Max Pack is an outdated spec. It was announced to only be 149kWh.
You're correct, thank you for mentioning it. -Travis
Max Pack battery costs $10K more and only adds 50 miles of range. 😞
Congrats on the weight loss, helps with the 3rd rows I am sure. LOL 😂
What’s your height bro? The SUV looks unrealistically huge!
No captain chair option 😂
Wow, 135kwh is soo much battery for only 279 mi highway. Energy density is still a huge issue for EVs.
I would argue the biggest issue for EV's is charging infrastructure. -Travis
How many people can afford an $80k to $100k SUV?
Too expensive for me too, but so is the Suburban/Yukon, Wagoneer, Expedition/Navigator, Sequoia, all of which are similarly priced and quite successful models.
A lot of people. Look at all the Full size SUV in the market. The cheapest FS SUV you can get is the Ford Expedition base
@williamerazo3921 more can not than can though. By a wide margin. Its no wonder people arent racing towards bankruptcy to save the planet and why the companies touting ev's because they care about the planet dont price them so regular people can afford them. The only green they care about is cash. Car companies are loving this save the planet cry.
@@steinwaymodelb yup
The integration of so many functions into a couple buttons and a screen is not user friendly. Yesterday one of these pulled up next to me at a stop light. I checked out the panel gaps while waiting. Not good. You can't lose $33,000 per vehicle sold and stay in business forever. Unlike Tesla, I don't see this company surviving.
Another EV we will never be able to buy or afford. Rivian is losing ~$20k on each.
What ?? How???
They were losing 100+k a yr ago. Now 33k per vehicle in q2
I am considering to buy Rivian R1S EV SUV.
Only issue is that you can’t with the long ass wait times for delivery.
The new 2025 model will have a Tri-Motor level that is more powerful than this Quad Motor with 850 HP
0-60 in 2.9 seconds.
Coz most parrot the company provided talking points
Yeah. It is misleading.
My man Alex has lost a ton of weight!
Go look at he video where they need to fix a rear dent for 41 000$ I sure will never buy that SUV lol
That was a bs estimate
@@franksmartin1 well not really since those trucks are one piece body
@@L.L I own one many people have has these dents fixed for a fraction of that price. They are also excellent candidates for PDR.
@@franksmartin1 that repair cost was at the Rivian repair shop itself so for them they probably just wanted to change the full side of the body
It's not quite for me, but I'm quite curious on what the R2S will turn out like.
this is a game changer
Rivian continues to be bailed out by Uncle Joe
