I want you to be the judge and let me know which lens you like better. I did my best to compare everything you all have voiced to me in the student discussion section below. Here are some of the class notes on what we will cover between the Neewer and Ulanzi. Price, what’s in the box, how they’re both installed, how the vlog shot looks, looking at the vignetting and distortion on the outside of the frame, what the picture itself looks like, which lens is wider if either of them is, the weight difference, the usability aspect, autofocus comparison, the threading on both lenses for polarizers and ND filters and my opinion on which one is better.

Do you get any sharpness/distortion around the outside of the frame with the Ulanzi? Seems like the image quality on my Ulanzi is terrible except right in the center, with blurring about 2/3 out to the edge. Adding a polarized filter also vignettes badly around the edges at wide end.

I have the Neewer and have the half cage on the bottom of my ZV1. I like that the camera looks and feels a bit more substantial in the hand. I keep the larger ring on most of the time except when traveling. I havent used any filters with it, just the camera's internal is all I use and need for what I video. Thanks for the short comparison. You and your videos actually made me choose the ZV1 for my videos on my channel. I still love it. Thanks again and keep the Zv1 videos coming!

I don't even have a ZV-1 anymore but as a person trying hard to be a UA-camr I can appreciate all the work that had to go into making this video because you had to work with putting on and taking off that adapter to show the differences. Of course I know all the extra things you need to do to setup and complete a video .

I initially bought the Ulanzi but didn't like the adhesive or the look so I bought the Neewer before I'd even tried it, and I have to say it's great. Love the ease of fitting and it gives a better angle for vlogging than just the camera lens. After watching this comparison I'm convinced I made the right choice. Thanks for the video man

  • @TyeMorrisVlog

I've had the Neewer for a couple of months or so now, and I've been pretty happy with it so far. I'll have a couple of new videos coming soon on my channel which use this setup (once I power through a big client video project and have time to work on personal stuff).
I use the UURig half cage which consists of a solid bottom plate and decently sized grip. It attaches via the tripod 1/2 20 socket (my only complaint here is it uses a phillips head screw instead of an allen key, but this can be modified) and leaves the attachment area around the lens free for the Neewer adapter. The Neewer adapter also has a small cut-out at the bottom base of the adapter when installed to allow for cage bottom plate clearance.
I can still get this setup to balance on my Zhiyun Crane M2 if I switch out the attachment plate of the cradle for the one SmallRig makes specifically for the M2 and attach an arca swiss plate to the bottom of the UURig (I use the Peak Design capture clip plates). The UURig has an array of holes on the bottom that allows for a bit more forward placement of the arca swiss plate.
I use the SmallRig cradle plate because it allows for quick detachment of the camera for battery swaps, and since this configuration of my ZV1 is all that goes on that gimbal, i made a few discreet reference marks so I can line everything back up once the battery swap is done.
It takes a bit of fiddling, and it feels like it's getting close to the limits of what the M2's cradle will allow space-wise, but it still works great.
Thanks for the great content, as always!

this is all great information for anyone who is interested in trying to throw it up on a gimbal. I actually was thinking about that as I was editing, but then I realized if I can throw the ZVE 10 up on a gimbal than the ZV one with the Neewer lens shouldn’t be a problem

For creating a system of how to store all your footage, selects and/or exports for re-usability, if there is one. For another idea, video creation process from start to finish. Writing, filming, editing, even thumbnails. I'm always down to see others' processes on this.

One thing that wasn't addressed was the effect of the Neweer spring rate effect on the ZV1 lense motor. Although the weight of the lens is not directly on the ZV1 lens but if the spring is pulling back then that would cause the motor to constantly push forward in response to maintain the lens extended. Also, if there is any clearance issue on the lense extraction by tightening the clamp on the barrel. Although the lens does come out it is being forced out by the motor so friction may not be great enough to stop it from coming out but there may still be some that can affect the motor

Thank you. Man, whenever I watch videos at your channel I do learn a lot about my own ZV-1. However, since I’m admittedly sometimes slow in my learning to operate any camera, I am though glad I can learn from videos such as yours many I watch repeatedly. They to me are positive as well as very uplifting. Now about your recommendation, I may just decide to get the lens from Neewer and later a gimbal (M2S) too as in a long run it can alleviate any of my need of the wide angle if intended specifically towards vlogs or on handheld shots or where altogether active stabilization and its resultant crop on the ZV-1 might best become an issue that’s possibly been avoided by me just via my usage of the gimbal instead.

    • @thefilmalliance
      @thefilmalliance  Рік тому +1

Thank you so much for the comment. Some people have commented that I talk to slow in my videos, so I have tried to find the perfect medium. If you have trouble picking up what I am saying, you can always change the speed of the video. Yes, I also would recommend the Neewer, because it attaches to the cameras and won't hurt the motors. What camera do you have?

  • @mkoenig57
    @mkoenig57 Рік тому +5

    Great comparison!
I’ve been using the Ulanzi quite a bit lately. I’ve noticed the image quality degrades badly around the edges. A polarizing filter also vignettes noticeably at the widest zoom. My photos look terrible when using it.
I do like that I can quickly unscrew it, and add another filter, so it makes for a versatile tool when you need a wider view.
But, I need to see what’s up with the terrible blurring just outside the center of the frame. Seems odd.

I have the ulanzi on one of my two ZV1’s and only 2 things I dislike are how ugly it looks when lens is extended and the apparent stress the lens may go thru each time i turn it on but, just as you mentioned, no issues so far.
As for the neewer, it looks better IMO But, takes away the small form factor which is what makes alot of people love the ZV1. It no longer remains a “pocket camera” and instead will have to be carried in a suitable camera bag just as you’d carry your A7 series camera.
Im sticking with the ulanzi UNLESS the neewer drops to $20 or something lol

Hi! I picked up the neewer a week ago, and I love it. It makes the camera easier to handle, now I can use my left hand to grip the camera like a reflex. Another thing that is great is the chance to use 49mm filters, and neewer have a lot of types to put on. But, it haves to issues: #1 you gonna need a camera case and #2 the macro lens isn't so good, i don't like it very much.

So I had both, first bought the Ulanzi, after the default M3 ring I bought the magnetic ring (from a UA-cam video reviewing it) after that the lens came loose 4 times and with luck didn't brake. But that was the moment I decided to move to the Neewer. Now I am so happy for me the neewer is much better and the mounting is much more steady. No more the feeling of loosing the lens. So that would be my personal tip.
Love the video's and really love my ZV-1 it is a powerhouse of a camera in a very small form factor (also have the Crane M3, and a DJI Osmo Pocket 2 as my vloggin set).

I recently got the neewer one specifically because of the weight straining on the motors and possibly lens alignment, but now you have me conflicted again! I specifically got the zv-1 because i don't want to lug around a "proper" camera for video (i usually have 2-3 film cameras in my bag already) and the neewer lens with the tube and everything is almost the size of a smallish full frame lens.

  • @yahoolee813

You can find the picture when you put both lens on the same screen, obviously, the inside of the Neewer lens is much darker. That means the reflection inside the lens is much smaller than the Ulanzi. Also, the coating seems much better on Neewer. And that is why the output color of the Neewer lens is sharper. And I would not accept the sticker adaptor neither. it is not only the problem of motor, the camera lens group will be collapsing downward because of the long time constant force of attractment. I am talking about the irreversible damage.

I bought a Sony ZV-E10 and following your channel. The camera is the first digital camera I ever owned. A reason I bought the Sony camera is to utilize already-owned Pentax K-mount lenses. To use the filters for the Pentax lens on the Sony lens, I have also purchased a 40.5mm-to-52mm step-up ring filter adapter. I bought a M-REMOTE 18mm wide-angle lens and used the step-up ring filter adapter to mount the wide-angle lens and it works well. I do not have to use tape.

My wife is going to be behind the camera recording me doing things and she is not going to learn about aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. There's another adapter by Zomei, I've seen recommend by some UK channels. Unfortunately it's not available in the US outside of eBay. It's cheaper and lighter than Ulanzi and Newer. Unfortunately it also sticks to the front of the lens like the Ulanzi. However it's not much bigger than a lens filter.
The thing I don't like about the Newer, it not only means you lose the full cage but it makes the camera bigger and heavier. Even if you don't use the actual adapter.
For my uses I've found it easier to just use a handle or a gimbal to hold the camera out a little further. I do have the mount for the ulanzi attached to my camera but I use it for a variable ND much more than the wide angle adapter.

Does the mounting ring of the ulanzi work as well for filters without the wide angle attached? I like the neewer and gizmon as they seem better suited to running say a 72 or 84mm vnd setup that would be compatible with my other, bigger camera (buy once, cry once, lol - don't want to invest in multiple 400 dollar sets of filters!)

Sorry I don’t know of one, I get asked this often. Let me know if you ever find one

I think the only use for these adapters is a walk-and-talk, which is why I prefer the Neewer, I don't like the idea of a permanent ring being glued to the rim of the lens

I agree to that. Although the Neewer makes it so that it is not pocket friendly anymore. It’s more of a preference thing.
