As an Iranian I am so happy that the Chinese citizen have gained enough confidence to break out! When standing up and fighting against tyrannical dictatorship and risking your life you know people have enough. Iranian and Chinese people have more than enough. Freedom for all of us ❤

Literally large population stopped working, after days of police brutality and people standing ground in the end communists had to resign. I salute the Chinese People for standing up for their courage to speak up. They have finally found their voice, they have discovered the strength of their unity & their worth as a people.
Um actually the Chinese had found their voice many times before including in 1989. The reason there have not been protests between then and now is because life actually improved exponentially from the 90s til now. Westerners have this idea that China is a scary, oppressive place, but for the majority, life was getting better and they could just live normally. I know Americans who went to China and came back saying it was a nice place actually. It's only because the stringent zero covid policies are making people fed up that you're seeing protests now.

As a European living in Shanghai for many years and during this period, Chinese only protest if they are hungry or if they are scared. In this case BOTH things are happening. On the one hand people locked down with difficulty to buy food and paying higher prices due to their city lockdown, and on the other hand, the fact that what happened in Urumqi could happen anywhere to anyone because the same barriers locking compounds are EVERYWHERE in the country. The Western media are constantly watched so everything they report is also watered down. These protests are unprecedented so it really depends on how the government acts if they will stop or if they will intensify. The key question is will the CCP double down or eventually slowly quit covid 0 policy…

These areas are not restricted so far merely because the road's name is Urumqi. The significance of this uprise in Shanghai is the compassion for the people in other cities, such as Urumqi, way more than just shouting "down with CCP/Xi Jinping". Compassion is something not commonly existing in our nature, nor were we taught and educated like that. Let others take the sacrifice, let others shout out for us, and we just mind our own business. With over 100 million infections and just over 1 million deaths, the mortality rate is 1%. So just do the simple math if China decides to open up (Guesstimate, at least 6 million deaths, from say approx. 600 million infections out of 1.45 billion people @ 1% mortality rate. That's more than the entire population of Denmark......)

I am so proud of those protestors. I used to join the student movement in 1989. People felt more freedom to speak out that time, which was why so many people went to streets to support students. While I suspect we have different opinions, I did watch this and find myself thinking about how the oppressiveness of quarantine measures is relative. I'm from the US but I spent a good chunk of 2020 in France, having to carry around a document stating what time I left home and for what purpose every time I went outside, so watching Americans protest masks seemed petty in comparison. China can enforce stricter lockdown measures on its people than any western governments, but also western countries have mostly moved on to the living-with-covid stage, while China is still quarantining like it's 2020. Are Chinese people exhausted from their own experiences, or are they also comparing their situation with other countries and feeling envious? Who even knows what's a good response or a reasonable restriction, all we can do is compare ourselves with others.

If you look at Chinese history, Chinese people actually have been protesting and fighting against the powers, the ruling govts for thousands of years. Hence the many Chinese dynasties, many Chinese Emperors were actually peasants and low-life citizens. The dictators attitude towards this virus is very interesting, especially given that China could easily buy vaccines enough for all of it's citizens. Unfortunately their home grown vaccines weren't very effective but still better than nothing. I do however recall at the beginning of the pandemic it seemed a matter of pride for many Asian countries to keep the official numbers low, as if it was a competition. I've lived in Asia a dozen years now but I don't think I'll ever understand the "Asian mind".

This was, in my opinion, inevitable. When you give people knowledge to better their lives yet stifle and restrict them, it will almost always reach a breaking point. The outcome depends on the overall size of the protests. If it is nation-wide then its considered a revolution that would lead to change, if it is scattered and contained in various areas, all the authorities have to do is brace themselves and turtle up till the protests run out of steam.

That's more than the entire population of Denmark......)

While I suspect we have different opinions, I did watch this and find myself thinking about how the oppressiveness of quarantine measures is relative. I'm from the US but I spent a good chunk of 2020 in France, having to carry around a document stating what time I left home and for what purpose every time I went outside, so watching Americans protest masks seemed petty in comparison. China can enforce stricter lockdown measures on its people than any western governments, but also western countries have mostly moved on to the living-with-covid stage, while China is still quarantining like it's 2020. Are Chinese people exhausted from their own experiences, or are they also comparing their situation with other countries and feeling envious? Who even knows what's a good response or a reasonable restriction, all we can do is compare ourselves with others.

When I was young I truly believed the whole world was moving forward towards freedom and working together. I thought we were in a glorious time where the world would rapidly become a better place. In 2020 man took a giant step backwards and it breaks my heart.

The dictators attitude towards this virus is very interesting, especially given that China could easily buy vaccines enough for all of it's citizens. Unfortunately their home grown vaccines weren't very effective but still better than nothing. I do however recall at the beginning of the pandemic it seemed a matter of pride for many Asian countries to keep the official numbers low, as if it was a competition. I've lived in Asia a dozen years now but I don't think I'll ever understand the "Asian mind".

This was, in my opinion, inevitable. When you give people knowledge to better their lives yet stifle and restrict them, it will almost always reach a breaking point. The outcome depends on the overall size of the protests. So you just think we want our country to become a country like USA,you are wrong absolutely wrong. We just want free speech and democracy.American is a country with so many problems so is china. But we all want it to get better. Our needs for democracy is our natural rights.
