    I wish more people would watch this video and use this method. It doesn't take hours of slow cooking and the paint peels right off after about a half an hour/one hour for really stubborn paint. I'm restoring badly abused antique hardware and I swear by his method. Save your time and money, this works.

    I absolutely love this method. i hate working with chemical strippers. the only thing you need to make sure you do, is brush off the paint before the hardware cools. I take one piece out at a time, and brush each one before I remove the next piece. Also, since you're working with hot metal, using a plastic or nylon brush doesn't last very long. I used a soft brass brush. brass can't scratch brass. if you're working with hinges, or flat door plates, a plastic putting knife will work wonders. It won't melt because you can get everything off with a quick swipe.

    We just removed all the hardware in our 1940's house, and put it in an old slow cooker with a splash of liquid laundry detergent - works well too! It's so nice to have clean hardware...they had a minimum of 3 layers of paint on them.

    Thanks, this worked a treat ! I had sprayed brushed nickel cabinet hardware with black Hammerite. I used an old saucepan and simmered in bicarb soda for 40 minutes. I worked on them right away with a teaspoon to get the paint off. They needed a going over with one of those metal-look scouring balls and washing up liquid as there was a little gummy residue in places. Now they look exactly as they did before I ruined them !

    So now that I boiled my door hinges with baking soda and then scrubbed with acetone. Does the boiling methode remove the grease in the door? I wonder if I need to lube the hinges back up, or if I need to reposition them because the door feels a little stiff? My thing is I bought a new door and had to rip it down to size and paint it but to save money I used the old hinges since I knew they already fit the groove cut out in the frame so I just made the groove in the new door. And maybe my hinges are placed slightly off? What do you think?

    • @biondatiziana
      @biondatiziana 3 роки тому +1

      I'd try a heat gun, after disassembling the bed, of course. Heat softens many types of paint (especially latex). It will also cause the metal to expand a bit, which will loosen the paint bond. If you suspect lead paint (you can test for it, but the test kits aren't 100% reliable), don't heat it too much or the lead will vaporize. Alternatively, Citristrip is a non-toxic paint stripper that works well and is easy to use. Remember that although Citristip is safe, the paint residue may contain lead, so dispose of it responsibly. Use plastic or nylon scrapers because brass is soft and scratches easily. Good luck!

    Could this be done with a relatively small, single-socket bathroom ceiling light fixture if the wiring's removed (to later be replaced)? It's original and brass I think - in a 1916 house - and has an upside-down bell shaped canopy (that touches the ceiling) then below that it has one or two little loops like links in a chain (the hanger loop) then below that is the brass socket. Most of the paint has come off the brass socket from the (unfortunate) constant moisture in the air, and the two layers of paint on the canopy have been slowly peeling off from all that humidity so that it looks awful. I imagine the paint should come off easily. But I doubt I can put the whole thing in boiling water eh? Not sure I'm skilled enough to take it apart and boil only some parts.

    Boiled 2 year old interior acrylic new construction painted hinges for 20-25 minutes with extra baking soda. Only a very thin layer of paint peeled off. Did not work at all for me.

    PLEASE HELP!! My dear friend and customer has doors on the sunny side we live in Florida by the way that are peeling off the door the doors are great he wanted to replace him I said no.
    How do I get the paint that won't peel off, off the doors. Also advise on prepping doors do that the paint adheres for many years.
    [He's prepared to buy new ones I said no. The cost to install exterior doors is ridiculous]

      The least expensive way would be to use a chemical remover, such as Citristrip, which is safe and works well, in my experience stripping furniture and working on my 150yo house. Be sure to take the doors off the hinges and lay them flat so the remover doesn't run. If Citristrip doesn't work, there are other paint strippers that might work, but some are very toxic and not sold in all states. Some of these contain dichloromethane, also called methylene chloride. Some of the strongest ones are labelled marine strippers. Read the label and follow the instructions carefully. If you don't want to use a chemical stripper, you could try a heat gun or an infrared (IR) heat stripper, but be careful because they can both scorch the wood and start fires. (I know someone who burned down his house using a heat gun to strip paint.) IR paint strippers appear to work well, but are crazy expensive. Glad you're saving those doors. It'll be worth it in the end.

      The advice is that new doors will do the same in a few years, so not worth the money doing so.
      Use genuine oil based enamel paint once they've had the old paint stripped off. Latex enamels are junk that peel off in 2 years on my south facing windows, and I'm in NH so can't imagine the paint failure rate in FL.

    Doesnt work on well done pre surfaced prep stuff or old fire axes. Okay for fixed on stuff that wasnt done right in the first place. Not to mention they're oil based.

    Uh just soak it in citri strip gel from Home Depot in a Tupperware container for a day or two with the lid closed. Then scrub with steel or plastic (if your worried about scratches) wool under warm water in the sink. Then you don't have to use heat. Smh

      I think the point is that you don't have to go to Home Depot and buy chemical-based strippers if you don't want to.

    • @nthnsome
      @nthnsome Рік тому +1

      @@mckevrock Not so sure about that. It’s not that expensive. I have striped 4 doors and all my trim work in my 1910 1000’ sq/ft home and it worked brilliantly. On the doors and trim work I applied the citri strip gel then the thin rolled plastic and let it soak for a day. Then it would tak like three of the 6 or 9 layers of paint off. As for the hardware that was painted on it was easy. Just soak in Tupperwarefor a day. Point is people that are willing to do this are desperate for a solution and would likely not have an issue with $15 for the gel. Just offering a solution that I know works. God speed man. Live renovations!

A big thank you to all the people that gave this clown great references. I'm posting everywhere I can to warn other people not to hire him. Hopefully, he will be out of business soon, along with his false references.
