I like how Natasha felt so bad about Antonia and wanted to free her. In a way saying, "If you're going to kill me, do it because you want to, not because he told you to."
Dreykov is such a terrifying villian. Most MCU villians simply kill people or build weapons to get more money and/or power.
But kidnapping little girls, turning them into killing machines and basically mind-controlling them, that is true evil.
I agree! All I could think about while watching this movie was how Dreykov is one of the most terrifying villains in the MCU!
Agreed. There were too many people, particularly men, who did not understand that and thought the movie was awful. Dreykov built a business of child trafficking and creating child soldiers which are war crimes and in the opening credits they showed him with political leaders and heads of state implying that governments were using his Black Widows. In top of all that he weaponized his own daughter. Truly sickening stuff.
Yelena was such an absolute highlight. Florence Pugh did such a great job.
When Yelena tries Nat’s pose and then recoils in disgust, it gets me every time.

Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova and her relationship with Natasha was great in this. You have probably started to watch Hawkeye by now but it is a Christmas series like Die Hard is a Christmas movie. :)
Hearing It was real to me and it was real to me too gets me every time.
It was neat to see someone's reaction to Taskmaster who didn't know the character and wasn't completely disappointed.
This is just my opinion but I really liked the taskmaster twist in this film in works in the context of this films story kinda like how the mandarin twist works in the context of Iron Man 3
That's the only thing I didn't like from the movie.
The intro of this movie is so powerful when the song plays, the message is so true to life

I was very excited when they started introducing Thunderbolt characters (Zemo, US Agent, etc), and now that the project is confirmed, I'm pretty hyped.
Loki mentioned Drakovs daughter to Nat in the first Avengers film
Young Natasha is played by Milla Yovovich's daughter. Taskmaster has the ability to mimic any fighting style.
I love that Yelena named her dog Fanny 🥰
One thing I think you didn't catch is that The Taskmaster reproduces moves from people Natasha knows:
When she's following Nat at the beggining, in the bridge, she uses Steve's moves with the shield, later in the car chase she uses a bow and arrow, in Clint's style. And when fighting Alexey, Antonia combines both Widow combat style and Steve's moves, plus Black Panther moves and "Winter Soldier's knives" if you look closely.
His daughter is Task Master, and she is a mimic, she can mimic any fighting style she sees, so she is literally using Cap's fighting style which is why she has the shield, also the claws was mimicing black panther
Rachel Weisz was also memorable in "Oz, the Great and Powerful," "Constantine," and "The Shape of Things."

I loved this movie. Great action, solid in both comedy and drama, and awesome casting (the addition of Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova is a game-changer). 👍❤

Hope you get to watching the Phase 4 shows like WandaVision and Loki. Anyway, it's so good to see David Harbour in the MCU. The Red Guardian is what you'd call the Russian equivalent of Captain America.
Yup, and the Crimson Dynamo (What Yelena called Alexei) is the Soviet version of Iron Man in the comics
Your instincts were good because you watched it in the right order. I loved this movie. The only thing that bugged me was that they didn't show what happened between her and Ross or how she got out of it. That was an odd choice.
Man, so many people upset that she changed the viewing order and most of them didn’t seem to watch her explanation as to why. Addie is going to go back and watch everything else. Because this movie is mostly backstory it doesn’t matter when you watch it, just that you watch it before Hawkeye which is what she did. There’s nothing in any of the other movies or shows that needs to be watched before this and Hawkeye. Val’s introduction was supposed to be this movie but it kept getting pushed back due to the pandemic so the other shows aired first. This was made to be her introduction so it works out. People need to chill.

The good thing about Phase 4 is you can really watch Black Widow and Hawkeye, then go back to Wandavision, Falcon and The Winter Solider and Loki without running into much confusion about other shows/movies.
In "The Avengers", when Nat is interrogating Loki in the Hulk prison, he talks about "Dreykov's daughter".
Young Natasha Romanoff was portrayed by Ever Anderson, daughter of actress Milla Jovovich(Alice of the Resident Evil movies) and Paul W. S. Anderson, one of the brilliant people behind these movies, as well as the Mortal Kombat ones in the 90's!!!!!

Good call watching this before Hawkeye. 👍 The only continuity break is in the end credits scene--Julia Louis-Dreyfuss' character first shows up in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. But you can circle back and watch that later (which you need to do sometime, as that series sets up the future films that Sam and Bucky will be in), and you didn't really miss anything seeing this appearance of her first.
Also, I really enjoy seeing all of these reactions. 🎉 I've watched quite a few UA-camrs do the MCU, and you're definitely one of the most knowledgeable and curious of them. So kudos...I think you'll enjoy most of the TV series that they made, they really made an effort to tie them all in tightly to the films.

@@JanPopieluch The only thing that was revealed in this thread was that a character she's already seen is going to appear again, which is hardly anything new. Besides, I'd let this particular plot point slide anyway since Black Widow was originally supposed to be her first appearance.

Addie, in the theater, we were all silent at the end, because we didn't know if Hulk tried to snap Natasha back to life or not, and this would be the first movie where we would find out if he did or not, and after Yelena whistled at Nat's grave, there was a good couple of moments of silence and everyone in the theater was thinking, is Natasha going to whistle back to her sister and show that she is alive again after Hulk's snap . we were so disappointed with Elaine showing up from Seinfeld , she is playing Val i think, she was in the movie, Nick Fury : Agent of SHIELD from 1998.
Yelena was really well casted with amazing Florence Pugh but man, I was surprised how good Young Natasha was. She is Ever Andersson, daughter of Milla Jovovich. Small role but she left impression to me.
Hawkeye needs to now be on your list Before Christmas !!!!!!

What threw me off was the casting of Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov. Antonia is suppose to be a lot younger than Natasha but in reality Olga is a number of years older than Scarlett.

One of the cool subtle bits with Taskmaster is in her fight scenes they recreated moves from other Marvel movies. For instance when she’s knife fighting and drops the knife into her other hand that’s copied from the fight between Winter Soldier and Captain America. She also copies Black Panther and Spiderman’s moves in some of the scenes. There’s a neat video somewhere that shows side by side comparisons of Taskmaster copying moves from the other movies, it’s kind of fun. 🙂

funfacT: this movie was supposed to come out before all teh series so it makes way more sense watching this first to understand after credit scenes xDD
My favorite thing about this is how they managed to make Yelena completely different yet exactly the same as she is in the comics.
In the comics, after Natasha defected, Yelena was selected to be the next Black Widow, and wants to prove she's just as good as, or better than, Natasha. Natasha is mostly annoyed at this younger upstart trying to take her title, but is also having a bit of a midlife crisis and wondering if her best days are behind her. Shifting Natasha and Yelena to older and younger "siblings" keeps a lot of that dynamic intact, with Yelena wanting to prove herself to or outdo her big sister, Natasha being annoyed and exasperated with her little sister's antics yet also being very protective of her. It's a really cool way of adapting their comic antagonism to make Yelena more heroic, and a fit successor to Natasha.
This happened right before Infinity War. Now you know where her blonde hair & vest came from in that movie.
Watching Red Guardian trying to get into his old uniform reminded me of the original The Incredibles trailer, when he tried to get his old uniform on. 😆

FYI in comics the Crimson Dynamo is Russia’s version of Iron Man, they even have they’re own version of the Avengers called the Winter Guard
Marvel recently confirmed the lineup of the Thunderbolts film, w/ most of the cast being from Black Widow or Falcon & the Winter Soldier lol w/:
- Yelena Belova - Red Guardian - Taskmaster - Val
- Bucky Barnes - U.S. Agent - Ghost (from Antman & the Wasp)
I'm curious about the plot since there are a lot of similarities between the main characters:
- Red Guardian, Bucky and U.S. Agent are all Supersoldiers
- Bucky, Yelena, Ghost and Taskmaster are all assassins
- Bucky, Yelena and Taskmaster hv all been brainwashed/ mind controlled, etc
I wonder if this film might introduce a romance between Bucky and Yelena.
They seem to hv a similar sense of humour so I'm such they'll be an entertaining pair, and it would be fun to see her express interest in Bucky w/ Red Guardian on the team lol
If you notice the vest she was making fun of is the same one she is wearing in infinity war/end game. Yelena was the absolute highlight and David Harbour is always good.

Nice reaction Addie! I waited quite awhile to watch this one, but I'm glad I finally got around to it. It exceeded my expectations. And I like that you're going to jump a bit out of order and skip ahead to Hawkeye. Like Black Widow, I wasn't that interested in watching it as I've always been kind of meh about him as a character. But I found the show to be VERY entertaining. It's definitely worth watching!
In the comics the US gov did try to make a couple replacement Caps after Rogers went missing. None of them worked out quite the way they wanted. But anyways if they wanted to they could retroactively make it so Red Guardian DID fight a Cap! And that’s who he fought, not Rogers.
Also the Crimson Dynamo is a real character from the comics too! Russia’s Iron Man!

Watching Hawkeye before Falcon and also before spidey no way home does have some continuity "issues" BUT they're so small it really won't matter when you do catch up with all the other stuff so you're all good!! I'm so excited for you to watch Hawkeye!! To this day it has been my favorite MCU show but I'm also definitely in the minority in that lol

If you wanted something festive I wouldn't have minded the "Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" as an alternative.
Marvel decided to delve into TV series as well after Avengers Endgame, meaning they came up with shows like WandaVision, Loki, Captain America & The Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, etc.
Considering you're watching the next movies, you may want to consider watching WandaVision (and perhaps Loki) as the events of that one tie in with the next Dr. Strange movie. Might be pretty confusing if you haven't watched that TV series before that movie.
I was greatly disappointed with that movie. Won't go into details to avoid spoilers, I found none of the characters convincing as written.
Addie, i liked it, but before this came out, i wanted her movie to be like her character in the comic books, in the comic books, the Black Widow turns out to be a double agent for Hydra the whole time. and i wanted the movie to show her double crossing Shield and the Avengers throughout the whole mcu, that would have been a cool movie methinks.
You skipped Spider Man: Far From Home movie to end phase 3. Then phase 4 begins with Wandavision tv series, the Falcon and the Winter Soldier tv series, the Loki tv series and finally is the Black Widow movie.

Hey! 😃 NO SPOILERS! 👍🏾 Just wanted to comment on something about the Hawkeye series that I'm sure some of my peers have mentioned already but I consider rather important eventually.
In the latter half of the season there's going to be a character that is presented as a big deal and that Hawkeye doesn't want involved since they're dangerous. For more on why that character is really interesting I would recommend that you watch - eventually and at least- the first season of the “Daredevil” show. It might give some insight and have some ramifications on what's to come, and it's such an enjoyable series in its entirety as well... Great reaction as always. Keep up the good work. 😁👍🏾
Valentina was introduced in Falcon & the Winter Soldier, which was a pretty good show. Yelena's adventures continue in Hawkeye.

Yelena was the best character in this and I think it was smart that we got to see so much of her knowing she will be in the MCU. I still hate that Valentina came in at that moment at the grave and ruined a moment. Wish Taskmaster was more like the comics but overall I enjoyed the movie.

Hydra had Winter Soldier for a long time, and I'm pretty sure Draykov is ex-Hydra, which would explain how he had access to super-soldier blood in order to create Red Guardian.
I also think he used a weaker version for his Black Widows, which explains how they're able to survive such in juries

Dreykov was with Russa/Soviet witch where with HYDRA so he was connected.

It should have been after civil war. But it's nice we got it at all.
If you want to watch "Hawkeye", one of the villains in "Hawkeye" was introduced in the marvel-Netflix "Street Level Heroes" series', now on Disney+. Like the film MCU, the Netflix "street level heroes" also ties together several heroes and villains into one larger storyline. Many of the secondary characters and even locations are common to all of the series, and heroes ad villains have started to cross over into MCU movies and Disney+ series'.
The sequence is:
Daredevil season 1 (also introduces Claire Temple), occurs after "The Avengers"
Jessica Jones season1 (also introduces Luke Cage/Powerman and Jeri Hogarth)
Daredevil season 2 (also introduces Frank Castle/Punisher and Elektra Natchios)

Hi Addie, great reaction as always. I actually quite like this film, but as others have said releasing it to open phase 4 after the events of End Game was just wrong, its jarring to the thread of the MCU and it diminished my enjoyment of the film as result.
This film should have been split in two with both parts released earlier. Black Widow is a big enough part of the MCU to have deserved her own origin film in phase 1, and the rest of this story should have been released as a 2nd film shortly after civil war. The only part of this film that belongs in phase 4 is the post credits. It feels like Marvel realised it had messed up not giving Black Widow her own film earlier, panicked and just shoehorned one in to fend off critisism.
That's normal shield I'd say, since their family were bad guys.
when you do rewatch Endgame, take a look at Black Widow's costume. she's wearing Yelena's vest.
Good choice to watch this before Hawkeye which I really enjoyed.
