After the sandblasting, you could have used an anti-rust inhibitor to help slow the rust from reoccurring. Before you applied the first coat of paint, you could have used a filling compound and then sanded smooth. Then the primer, then the wet sand, then the final paint. You worked real hard on this project. I agree with the ultraviolet light cleaning process. Best I have seen for plastic, tires, and white wall tires. Remarkable restoration. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for these great tips! I will def. use some of your advice on my future restorations. I hope you have been well and thank you again for leaving me another comment. :) - R&R
Hi Wendy, thank you for leaving me such a kind comment. It made me really happy to read that both of you enjoy watching my restorations. I hope both of you are staying safe and healthy during these tough times. Till next time, take care my friends. - R&R
I just admire the attention to detail you put into your restorations! Like I said before, you are very talented. I've seen others with all the high end fancy equipment just rush through a project. They will powder coat w/o primer, just a quick sandblast; and when it's done, you can see all the pitting. No sanding. No love. Most of it is replacement parts even if the original is salvageable. Very lazy restorations. It's as if they're doing it for the views & not the art. Just a lack of respect for the object they're restoring. But not your work. You can tell you truly enjoy what you're doing and it shows! Beautiful results, once again.
Wow, this is such a nice comment. I actually went and read it to my family. Your comment made my day and makes this restoration results feel that much better. I would like to find a 1962 TONKA Surrey Jeep #350, at a reasonable price, and preferably with a 1962 white box, and have it restored with the same incredible quality workmanship that you exhibited with this job. Yes, I had one back in the day. Great job again!!
There is a group on facebook that its titled, tonkas, nylints, ....I dont remember the full name but there are guys on there that sell this stuff. When you wet sand, add a couple of drops of dishwashing soap, it helps lubricate and keeps your sandpaper from loading up. Great job, you have done an excellent job.
Nice effort and finish. Two thing to suggest. First, if you are going to do a primer coat to help fill in imperfections, use rattle can type so the wet sanding actually accomplishes something. Trying to wet sand powder coat is not easy. I powder coat and it is basically a plastic coating. Second, you can polish the grill section and bumper and if you can't get them to shine, use powder coat chrome on them. It looks great. Thumbs Up!
Hi Gary, thank you for writing me such great suggestions. I am def. going to look into these. I am always trying to get better at the craft of restoring. I am glad the truck turned out decent. I hope the future restorations continue to get better. Thanks again brother! - R&R

Now I see why you have such outstanding forearms! The amount of handsanding on this rustbucket was amazing! Glad you finally have your powder coat system. You did a great first job. But maybe when you put on the front fender, you might have missed the slots under the lights?
Hey Annette! How have you been? Thank you for your kind comment. I am happy with the powder coating system. I though the pieces came out great. Yeah there are two spokes on the way front that had to be bent where some of the powder came out while being put into the oven. Since those spots were covered with primer and wont rust I figured I would leave it alone since I am very new to powder coating. The spots were extremely small. Great observation :) I hope you have been well! - R&R

That powder coat system looks way more forgiving than rattle can paint. There are ways to replate the grill and bumpers at home, like some others do with Hotwheels restorations. Plate then buff and it might look like new. I do like the hubcap choice. Great job !
Hi Pops Smith, yeah this powder coating system works great. There are still a few things I need to figure out but overall I like it. Plating is something that I do want to give a try sooner or later. A couple of questions: How do you decide which steps to take for each restoration? Some with wet sand, for example, and some without. I am referring to all the different restorations. For example, in one video, you decided to chemically remove the paint and rust so as not to get it in your lungs, and other times, I don't see this. What do you do with the items you restore? How did you learn to do all this? It is fantastically perfect! Where do you get these very specific parts for these toys? It sounds amazing. These toys are old, as many you have indicated as being from the 1960's or a bit later. It amazes me that you can find these parts!
Hi Carole, thank you for your kind comment. I am really happy you enjoyed the restoration video. In regards to the steps I take with each restoration its varies. It various throughout my videos because when I started my channel I was spraying paint on so I needed to wet sand to make sure I did not get any orange peel when the paint was finished. In my most recent videos I have been powder coating which doesnt really need wet sanding. Usually the finish looks good but you can get an even better finish by wet sanding then polishing. The reason I stopped using the EvapoRust was because it was expensive and the sandblast cabinet was faster as well as cheaper in the long run. I recently started to use vinegar which works great. So now either use vinegar to get rid of the rust or I use my sandblast cabinet. It really depends on how much time I have to complete the restoration. The most recent restoration that I have restored I end up selling. Some of the items I keep for myself. I learned to restore from watching others and talking to some of the other restoration channel guys behind the scenes. That is really nice of you to say by saying they are perfect. Lastly, the parts can be found on ebay or gasoline alley website. For my next restoration I will be restoring all the metal parts myself from now on. I had to learn how to do it behind the scenes before I do it on camera. So be on the lookout later this month for that. Thank you again for your kind comment and I hope you enjoy my future restorations. Take care my friend. - R&R
out of all of the projects you have restored, which one would you say was the hardest to do? all of the restorations i have watched ,you do absolutely fantastic work. i like the way you do your videos no music no chatter you let your hands do the talking. keep up the excellant work. you definately have a subscriber for life thank you for all the hard work
Hi Bill, thank you for your kind comment. I really made me happy. This is a really hard question because each restoration has brought its own challenges from paint issues, to equipment issues, etc. I think the hardest one was the nylint roadster. I say that because I think I primered and painted that car 3 times. I did not show it in the video but there was major paint issues on that car and then the 3 time was the charm which the paint came out great. But having to take everything down to metal basically 3 times and then painting it was rough. Thanks for the great question. Just a heads up, the next video will have music. I am trying something a little bit different. Take care my friend. - R&R

Hi Texas Terry Thank you for you kind comment. The paint for this truck was white. There are 2 ways of knowing this. First, if you watch you can still see the original paint under the bumper where it was protected from the elements. Second, the Gambles trucks were predominately white especially in 59'. I always leave the chance of me being wrong but that would mean this truck had been restored before and the restorer painted it white and replace the decals along with leaving it outside a long time. This is by far one of the more extreme restorations I have seen. That thing is in HORRIBLE shape. I was cringing at the sound of the hubs coming off. Like.. peeling off layers of grime and muck. Only one worse I've seen was the Tonka with a bullet hole through the bed. 2 quick things. You need to look into the Retro Bright technique for cleaning the plastics (like those yellowed headlights). It'ss a UV light over a mixture of Oxyclean and Hydrogen Peroxide solution soaked over night. Makes old plastics burst back to life like new! And second. NICE work on the powder coat. You didn't add too much to take away the details and I'm betting that last wet sanding helped with that. GREAT JOB!

Insane amount of work restoring a Tonka truck..great job⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Hi Vincent, this was probably one of my favorite restorations. The chrome and white came out looking great. - R&R

When you wet sand, add a couple of drops of dishwashing soap, it helps lubricate and keeps your sandpaper from loading up. Great job, you have done an excellent job.
Hi Lowbubba, thats right! Someone told me a while ago to do that and I just forgot. Thank you for reminding me :) - R&R

Great job !

Hi Alex, thank you for kind comment. I hope everything is going well on your. Take care brother. - R&R

Excellent work!
I really enjoy your restoration videos, but I am wondering why you don't clean/restore your needle nose pliers? My father would have gone nuts if I had allowed his tools to get in that condition.
Hi Bruce, I have been waiting to buy new ones which I did for my newest restoration. There is really no good answer as to why I did not get new ones sooner or fix up the old one. I really appreciate your viewership and your comments. I hope you are staying safe and healthy during these tough times. Always great seeing you in the comment section. Take care my friend. - R&R
2 am i cant sleep so am watching some guy i do not know sand a toy car. Well done. Too many adverts though.
Hi, Your comment made me laugh and I really do appreciate your feedback. Many viewers asked me to keep in a lot of what I do even if its long. I dont have too much control on how UA-cam places ads. Sometimes there will only be a couple and sometimes a lot. I really appreciate you supporting my channel by watching the ads. It truly means a lot to me. Thank you again and take care my friend. - R&R
GREAT JOB!
Hi Maj, thank you for your kind words and taking the time leaving me a comment. I have seen guys do the UV Light for plastics. I will have to try that out. I hope you are doing well and thank you again! - R&R
I believe that the head lights were always kinda yellowish. But the process he's talking about is very effective at reviving plastic
Hi RR👋👋👋 awesome restoration Tonka Truck 👍👍👍💣👌🏽✌🏻🇷🇺
Hey Кошмар Кошмар!! Its great seeing you again. How have you been? Thank you for the kind words and I hope the future restorations are just as good if not better. Always great hearing from you my friend. - R&R
How many pounds of white powder coat did it take to painted all?
Hi Anthony, you can easily do under a point. My compressor was putting out too much powder. I just got a new air gauge the other day so it will help limit the amount of powder coming out of my gun. Thank you for watching as well as leaving me a comment. - R&R
How did I miss this video! Grats on the new powder coating machine! Great job as always! Is it hard to use? Detail..details my friend! Lol
Hi Greg, I am glad you were able to watch this restoration or atleast find it. I am thankful to my patrons and subscribers like yourself that made that acquisition of the powder coating system possible. It is fairly easy to use but I am still getting used to it. I am glad you like this restoration. This one was probably one of my favorites. Thanks again brother and its always great seeing you. - R&R
Where did you get the replacement parts from? I’m in the process of restoring the same one for my son.
HI Lane, I got these parts off of Gasoline Alley. - R&R
Where did you find that truck? In a puddle in a kids sandbox? Never seen one this rusty. You did an excellent job of restoring the truck and I really enjoyed watching this one!
Hi Shawn, I find the trucks in various places, youtube, facebook marketplace, craigslist, etc. I usually try and find super rusty trucks which takes time because people think no ones a rusty truck. Its always great seeing you in the comment section. I hope you have been well and staying safe. Take care my friend. - R&R
