New Beekeeper - What to do now

  • What a new beekeeper needs to look for in his (her) hive. Honey (food) & pollen. Late winter or early spring, we need to be sure our bees have enough food (honey) to be sure they don't starve in case of a few days in a row of rain. You can't control the pollen very well but you sure can keep them from starving.
Next, be sure you have a laying Queen and hopefully a good ( very good ) Queen. When I say very good Queen, one that is laying a lot of eggs and a solid pattern, not a lot of missed cells. The Queen is everything. A mediocre Queen doesn't get. This time of year, you should see eggs, larvae & capped brood. As your going through the hive frame by frame, be conscious of any Queen cells. If you see a lot of Queen Cells, they are getting ready to swarm. You don't want your hive to swarm as you stand a good chance of loosing the swarm.

    Dear Mr. Durham,
I am just learning about beekeeping. I have never had a hive but am very excited to get started. The greatest part about you and your videos is there are no wasted words or time which is refreshing!! There are to many folks in this bee business that just like to listen to themselves talk. You are the real deal. Thank you!!!

    HI! Old beekeeper hear.
Today guarding against thieves is my biggest problem. All my hives were stolen. Organic honey is pricey.
I am thinking of microchip my hives now. UA-cam is the best way for beekeepers to keep in touch.
I had my hives chained locked onto a solid cement slab.
Beehives are easy targets for the thieves. My hives were in open desert land.

***** I will have lots and lots of questions. I just uploaded a video of my new start and adventure. and I have a lot to learn and a long road to travel to get things set up. The boxes I got the large one the people that had the bees took the frames out of the box a few years back and so I have to build a box or buy them and hops to transfer them to the new box with frames that is something I will have to learn is to go from a box with out frames to one with frames and the smaller box I have is the same way but it was a captured swarm with a few frames in it have not gone deep in it as I have the other. I have not yet been stung but I have got the settle warning were they will bump in to yea. The stinking thing don't bother me but have not yet been stunk I know I will once I get things in motion. But I do have a lot to learn.

Pretty much those in the South wear protection. Up North you have seen people don't wear suits. Bees in the South have low percentage of Africanized Bees is why like 10 to 15 percent making them much more aggressive then that of those in the North.

You should have patented the brood chamber spacer. I am sure by now someone has capilitized on that. However you have WHEN you made them and designed them then used them to effect. You need to file a patent showing the date on this video of WHEN you developed it making it yours and yours alone. You can sell it to beekeepers that want a quick way to evenly space the brood chamber or any other part of the hive.

I have asked some of the beekeeping supply houses to to make and offer it but they haven't . I was watching ( mysteries at the museum ) and low in behold, they featured when Langstroth invented his hive. What was interesting is they show the space between frame one and the wall and between frame 10 and the wall. For decades beekeepers have be taught to leave this space there and that is wrong and I explained it in one or more of my vids.

I am a new beekeeper. Started with a feral swam, which sting without provocation, and their stings are excruciating, even through leather gloves. I swell up, itch like mad for days when they sting me.
Now I have some Caucasian bees. Much more gentle, and even when they sting, I barely feel it.
Does this make sense? Do some bees have longer / stronger stings and more potent venom than others in your experience? Or do younger bees have less powerful stings?

Do you know any other beekeepers that have had success weaponizing bees?
It's nothing nefarious, I'm just looking to protect my homestead.
Maybe you could do a video on it. I think it would be very informative. You do a great job with all of this and I can tell you take it seriously.

Several reasons. The venom I believe really helps my arthritis greatly. I have learned to accept the sting and the veil gets in my way
