I'm a new beekeeper. just did my first split and had the hardest time finding the old queen. I tried 3 times going through the hive but no luck. Then I saw your video. Great tips. Don't smoke so much, broadly view the frame, start from the back, I found the queen the next time i opened the hive using your ideas. Your techniques are really helpful. Thanks....Kiss the Queen!
Mr Durham. i am a sidliner my cousins are commercial beekeepers. I just wanted to let you know that I've watched most of your videos and always enjoy the work you do and the stories you tell. I have been recommending some of my customers to watch your wonderful videos. thank you for doing what you do.
Great video! I have been a working with bees for the last 5 years in queen rearing, nuc production, colony expansion, honey production, packaged bees, transportation you name it.This video reminded me of my first trip into a hive,I know how hard it can be to expound on everything an experienced beekeeper sees in a glance to people. You did a excellent job of providing some of the basics for people,I hope more people get into this and realise how fun it is(sometimes).Keep up the good work and i'll be watching more videos.
Hi there Tim. Just wanted to say thank you for sharing your advice and vast knowledge of bee keeping. - It most certainly has helped me out immensely. I really like your videos, as they show it like it is, no real fancy editing. Once again thank you Tim.
This is the most informative video i've found ! Even better than the ones I purchased ! This is my first year and I have no clue what im looking at. Sure wish I were closer to you . I'd be payin a visit ! Thanks so much for posting this !
I just ran across your video and I enjoyed it very much. I don’t have any bees yet but I have been watching bee videos a lot. I am trying to learn all I can about bees and beekeeping. I’m no spring chicken myself. I will be 65 this month. Thanks for making these videos. You do a great job of explaining things very well as you are teaching. I just subbed to your channel. Thanks again from n.e. Alabama. Catch you on the next one…. Rick
You are the coolest guy!! Your video was so helpful!! Thank you so much for all your help!! And might I say, I just love how sweet you are to the queen bee, you just pour so much love into her! You are one of the BEST beekeepers I have ever seen!!
Well my goodness. You are so very kind. I get much pleasure thinking or knowing I helped someone as when I first started keeping bees, two old men in North Carolina helped me a lot & I know I must have bugged them to death. Stay in touch and God you & your love ones.....tim sr.
I have a question Mr. Tim, do you prefer solid bottom boards or ventilated ones? I am getting a new hive this year (I am a beginner) and was wondering which was better and if solid bottom boards are harder to clean?
They do not like screened bottom in northern Illinois here, but Ross Conrad strongly recommended them.....helps mites fall through and die....ventilation even in the winter....he lists it in his great video as one of the 5 methods to fight Varroa Mites. I am torn...my Mentor said they do not like them, and him and area beeks lost 80 percent of their hives..last year, I think he's been beekeeping for 8 years? and is ready to quit if he loses most of them again ...I read one library book that a picture stacked all for viewing.....I asked that author if I could have screened bottom board AND solid bottom board under that, he said yes....I may be nuts, at this time that is what I'm using for my 8 frames...
I was so excited to find your videos, you are easy to understand, explain as you go, and are very clear. I also got so much fun just being able to share your excitement over what a great queen you had in that hive! LOL, only a beek would understand the joy of this bee keeping endeavor. Keep the great vids coming. beek in N. Georgia :)
Mr Tim Durham your a geat educator.....I enjoy your vids and have learned a few techiniques from you....thank you! From a UK beekeeeper who keeps langstroths...rare in the UK :)
Thank you for your excellent videos Tim. Your enthusiasm shines through. Greetings from the UK and a new beekeeper who is learning lots from your videos.
i just got stung on my ear and my left middle finger oh it hurt but it was my fault because i broke into the bees home even though there crashing at my house i loved watching and listing to your knowladge of bees keep it up. audrey m. well done thank you.
Great information, really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing. I have four hive, top bar hives. You are so right about them having good days and bad days.lol And each queen has a different "personality" too I find, and so sets the stage for the whole colony.
I started out with the langstroth hives, but we're "do it yourselfers" and the top bars hives appealed to us, less to buy. I still have one langstroth hive in use.
Thank you Mr Durham you are a NICEAN hope all is well with you and yours. I was watching the one where you talk about the girls skinny dipping my wife was hearing all this and then you told the girls not to mind you you had just came down to feed the alligators my wife liked to choke and spit stuff everywhere that was two funny's at once fer me!!!!!!!!! HA HA HA HA
I love how you said she could know you were watching her. I have literally had to flip a frame a dozen times to keep viewing a queen. As soon as I would flip the frame she would run to the shady side. Thanks for the videos. I STILL have trouble finding the queen. ESPECIALLY in a double deep.
This was a fun video to watch. Much more personality than other video. Thanks for the tips. I keep having trouble finding my queen, but we'll find her one of these days! She must be a 'hider.'
This guy is awesome! The video is too. Thanks so much for sharing your beekeeping expertise with the rest of us newbee's. :) and thanks for typing that all out as well!
Love your videos. I'm a new beekeeper with unmarked queen. Hoping your tips will help me to find queen to re-queen for gentle bees. You certainly have calm bees.
Watched this again tonight as tomorrow I am doing my first inspection after nearly a week since nucs installed. Thanks for feeding advice BTW. Each hive has had a litre of sugar syrup a day. They are looking real good. Thanks for all your advice.
To the trained eye it looks easy. I couldn't see anything but i think it's just a practice matter. You look like you do this with passion, its nice to do what you love. XD
this reminds me of my Slovenian cousin's instructions to find a four-leaf clover....scan the entire area and look for certain pattern of four-leaf clover....Excellent video, thanks so much for sharing text and video.
Thanks for the great video. I am in my first year of keeping bees and have already made a split. Finding the queen has always been the hardest part because I try to look at each bee. With 30,000 + bees that does not work. I'll try the quick scanning method today when i go in and make another split.
Iam sorry i watch your video's every day over and over so to make sure iam learning all about how to take care of my grils and i have forgotten to push the like button so i make sure to do it know thanks for all you do for people like me that just not sure iam doing it right darrell Republic mo
Great video, good information. What perhaps impresses me most is your smooth handling of the hive and frames. Sure, you got stung a couple of times, but I didn't see any crushed bees where you put down the frames, and generally they seemed really undisturbed. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for sharing this video with us. We are first year bee keepers and have had some issues.... Learning and everyone says that even the experienced beekeeper learns a little something every time they go in the hive. We have lost our queen on one hive and did a combining with a swarm that we caught but they are still not producing like I would hope. The other hive is going like crazy and I fear a swarm, so trying to give them plenty of room. We have 3 deeps on the crazy good hive. :)
Extremely helpful! We are having issues with our queen in one hive, lost another, and our capped brood in our last one is spotty. No drones on any of them. I'd love to chat with you if possible. Either way, thanks so much!
Sorry to hear that. The Queen is everything. If you don't have a good queen, you don't have much. Try to do some research and find some quality queens. ...tim
Tim, Thank you for testifying of your love for the Lord and love for your wife of 40 + years. I love the Lord too and my wife of 29 years and will 'til death do us part. One year, when I saw queen cells forming in my hive I (as was taught) destroyed them in hopes to prevent a swarm. Two weeks later upon inspection of the hive, there were no larvae in the hive at all. I merged that hive with another one. I placed a sheet of newspaper between the two brood chambers allowing them to acclimate to each other. What did I do wrong? Why was there no brood. I don't think I'll be destroying queen cells any longer.
Thank you for this video. I was. Excited cause I found the queen too! I was happy I knew how to spot her. I am not a bee keeper nor do I do anything with bees 🤷♀️ I’ve just been really into these videos
U look in great shape sound really experienced I hope to look that good and hope to be working bees to I been at it for about 8 years n want to do it past 70
I'm building my very first hive right now and getting my very first package of bees next month! Your videos have been really helpful as I study in the meantime, so thank you very much for taking the time to create them. And I could find the queen on this video even when you weren't pointing to her, so I think I'm gonna be ok. :) By the way, you seriously do not look old enough to be 70. I pegged you for around 50!
***** We do...but I'm not terribly handy with a hammer. Is it especially bad if I have a little bit of nail sticking out one way or another? BTW, where did you get those hive spacers to put in your hives? Are those a piece you created, or can you buy them?
***** Ok, thanks for the reply! I just hived my Italians yesterday and observed them taking their orientation flights this afternoon, so I'll follow your advice and monitor the combs and keep them centered. Thanks again!
Watching your videos. A lot of great info, I appreciate it. I was just out going thru mine wondering what do I do, what am I looking for. I have larvae, eggs, brood and honey. I see no ill looking bees or signs of damage from any pests. My uncle got me into bee keeping and his hives have died. I may try to get a queen cell and get him restarted. I think I have a long way to go before I get to do that as I'm not even a year into it. Thank You for your time and videos.
Hi Tim, I've been watching all your videos, and they are wonderful, thank you. I am just learning about bees and considering dabbling with a couple hives in time. I'm not sure I have what it takes, I'm going to go to a beekeeping class or something first to check it out. But it is fascinating to me. Thanks again!
***** Well, what I mean is that when I'm out cutting grass and such, if a bee or something lands on me, I tend to swat away in fear! Funny you mention desire, I am a music teacher, and the exact same rule applies in music. I love how you tell people maybe they ought to go play the piano if they are not suited to keeping bees! (-:
oh...I have a story..one time walking in the forest of my property I heard a sound and dang...THERE WAS A LAKE OF BEES...AND I WAS ALREADY IN IT WHEN I LOOKED DOWN. way before phones with cameras and too far to go and come back time wise...but it was amaizing. ..totally amaizing. it was like a convention not a hive.

Great video! :) Ill bet it was a HOT DAY where you are! Summers are brutal here too.
***** Lived with it my whole life in Houston Tx and now here in Thibodaux La. Those poor bees have to 'FAN' to keep cool. :)
Great video, good information. What perhaps impresses me most is your smooth handling of the hive and frames. Sure, you got stung a couple of times, but I didn't see any crushed bees where you put down the frames, and generally they seemed really undisturbed.
Thank you for sharing!
Well, I learn many years ago to handle the bees like I handle my wife, very gently
My 92-year-old computer student tells me the secret of a long happy marriage is the words: "Yes, Dear"

Nevr seen a queen lays like that.
A fantastic queen!
Every once in a while a beekeepers will see a Mama of a Queen
Great video, I'll be doing my first inspection Wednesday or Thursday depending on the weather and I have not seen my queen yet. This helped a lot.
***** Did not find the queen, did not see eggs, this is a newly installed nuc of Russians. There were a few queen cells.
Thanks, so should I wait and let this happen or try to introduce a new queen?
There aren't a lot, about 4 frames full of bees 3 of which have a lot of capped brood 1 with a lot of larvae. Think I will let them do their own thing.
Sunk a lot of money into these my first year, don't want to put more into it with a chance of them not accepting the new queen I buy anyway.
Your input is very valued and appreciated.
They were very busy today, busiest I have seen them yet.
