Carter Wong is a legend I remember first seeing him in another American martial arts film called Tiger Claws 3, and then finding out he had a long career in the Hong Kong film industry in the 70s....my all time favourite film of his is Born Invincible in which he plays a villain who utterly destroys the entire group combatants at a Kung Fu school and every potential protagonist that attempts to take him down, that movie is epic.....fun fact, Raiden from Mortal Kombat is inspired by Thunder from Big Trouble in Little China

    • @theglassclown

Great interview! Congratulations! I grew up in the 1970’s and loved watching Kung-Fu movies on Saturday afternoons. Carter Wong, and many other actors in Big Trouble in Little China, stared in those movies. He is so kind an humble. His students are very honored to have him as their instructor.

Despite the racial criticisms of Big Trouble in Little China, I keep hearing a lot of praise from the Chinese and Chinese-American actors and crew as something that was both a big opportunity and something special as a Hollywood project for many of the reasons as the esteemed Carter Wong listed.

Wonderful interview! Glad to see Sifu Carter is still so enthusiastic & full of life! I love how he would start answering you in Mandarin & then he would revert to his more natural Cantonese! Would love to hear you analyze his mandarin and if you fully understood his style of mandarin being that he is from Macao/HK. Did Jessie understand Carter fully when he spoke Cantonese?

Eyyyy it's Carter Wong 😃 I used to watch his movies when I was like 10 way back the early 90s. A local station aired nothing but Chinese movies on its afternoon time slot and a good number of those are 18 Bronzemen movies, Shaolin Traitor, Hapkido, Dragon's Claws, or Sleeping Secret. It's amazing to see the Master still so full of life in his late middle age.

Yes. I used to think "representation" is corny and doesn't matter but I learned that in this world it matters profoundly in hard to imagine ways. It seeps into every fabric of the experience as any ethnicity. I truly appreciate people like Bruce Lee(I still think they killed him and his son on purpose for having a white wife)

Oh my gosh, I love this so much! One of my top favorite films of all times. I like Carter's description that the film was not racist. I agree with him that the writer paid reverence to the mystical side of Chinese culture:
Pinstripe lawyer : And I suppose that, uh, you expect me to believe in sorcery as well?
    Egg Shen : Of course!
    Pinstripe lawyer : Why?
Egg Shen : Because it's real.
And while Jack Burton was sort of the leading buffoon, Wang was the leading man. This movie was way ahead of its time. And it's still so darn funny. And I love it when Thunder explodes. I never thought about how it only results in tossed salad, not blood and gore... maybe martial artists are vegetarians? So nice to meet Carter!

This movie means a lot to me, it got me interested in Chinese Folklore and Mythology, it led me to finding out about Hong Kong Cinema, I started Reading Classics like Journey to the West and Romance of the THree Kingdoms, which also led to Wuxia novels from people like Jin Yong, Gu Long, and Liang YuSheng. I started training Chen Family Taijiquan and Mengcun Bajiquan, I've visited many historical places in China, I've become quite the Tea Afficianado (I love Chinese Tea the most, White, Green, Yellow, Oolong, Red, Black, all of it :) )

Loved this! I've known him primarily from his role in Big Trouble in Little China but never knew much of Mr. Wong's background and personal history relating to the other movies mentioned or his martial arts schools. As an American I can give the other side of his perspective on the criticisms of BTILC, and my thoughts mirror his; some people are over-analyzing the situation. As he mentioned, at that time in Hollywood there were not a lot of opportunities for Asian actors and having Kurt Russell as the lead really made sense because of his existing stardom and the producers/studio could leverage this as a box-office draw, to woo fans into seeing the movie. Even *with* Russell's star-power it was still a commercial flop and with Mr. Dun being less well-known, had he been marketed as the lead, it may have done less well. Of course, being an action-comedy-drama film also made it difficult to land with audiences of the time. Mr. Wong is right on the mark when he said that it provided a window into supernatural and mysterious elements of Asian culture. For all its failings, it did provide that portal at a time when movies really did not touch those topics.
Martial arts are absolutely bridge-builders between cultures, that's a great point! Earnest students are eager to honor the customs of their teacher's culture and show proper respect and appreciation. I have seen this so often over the years. Mr. Wong is an absolute testament to the benefit of martial arts, I couldn't believe he is seventy-four! Not only does he look much younger but he has an air about him and energy too that would suggest that he is much younger! I would love to see a sequel to Big Trouble in Little China, it would be a joy to see Mr. Wong reprise his role or mentor a new batch of Thunders, perhaps with a more culturally relevant backstory this time!
Kudos on the ending! That was just too perfect!!

Thank you for this video! It was great to hear Sifu Wong's perspectives on not only making "Big Trouble In Little China," but also immigrating to America and Chinese martial arts. This was also a good way to practice reading my Simplified Chinese and listening to both Mandarin and Cantonese (I'm very impressed to see how you and Sifu Wong switched between the two). I hope you can get more interviews and reactions in the future.

Both Jessie and Mr. Wong were so eloquent and articulate. Both were a credit to their professions.👍👏 Jessie's sense of humor in making her videos, always provides an entertaining watch.

Carter was pretty jacked, loved his character, he was in some great action sequences and some funny parts like where he fights Wang Chi at the end! Definitely the most majestic and mystical movie that incorporated comedy, sorcery, monsters, ghosts, at the same time.. Like Ghostbusters did, but with a different feel. Probably never be topped, but I'm still looking forward to the sequel come out with the Rock.

Such a cool interview. So you spoke in Mandarin and Wong Sifu responded in Cantonese? 很有意思! Wong Sifu looks great.

fantastic interview, he looks amazing! Thunder was such a powerful character in one of my favorite movies of all time. I watch it every now and then. never gets old. I agree with everything he said. it's easily one of the things that had my already falling in love with Asian culture back in the 80s. it was a bit goofy but it was also so mysterious and magical. All the characters were wonderful and I didn't feel anything racist about it either growing up in a very mixed culture northern NJ town. ahh, great interview, I really enjoyed this, thank you for your hard work! 你辛苦了,谢谢

This made me so happy. I have enjoyed “Big Trouble In Little China” since I was a kid. It’s a special movie to me, because it takes me back to my childhood years every time I watch it. This was a great interview! You did so well!! 👏👏👏Carter Wong is a legend! I loved hearing him talk about his experiences. I have heard a lot of positive stories from the cast and crew of Big Trouble In Little China. James Hong in particular speaks very fondly of his time on the film. It seems like everyone put their heart into making that movie. The fact that the movie has such a dedicated fan base to this day is a great testament to everyone’s efforts.

I absolutely love Big Trouble in Little China. I remember watching it when I was in High School back in the 80s. I cant even count how many times I've seen it. I'm actually watching it right now, and decided to do a quick search for actors from the movie. This interview is great!
