He was one of those things you see maybe only once in a lifetime. Like a total eclipse. You are not going to see anything like that again. Boxing doesn’t do enough to define what he was. Muhammad never really teased me. He saw me as I was. He really had this thing with Joe Frazier. He hated the fact that he loved Joe Frazier; Joe Frazier hated the fact that he loved Muhammad Ali. They accepted there was something between them. Of course, he called me 'Frankenstein', but in reality, that was a compliment because I was definitely the Frankenstein monster. The only things he said about me, he said because they were was true. One time, I heard him scream: ‘George Foreman’s not a real fighter. All he wants to do is kill somebody out there’. I remember asking myself - how did he know that? I wasn’t actually trying to box people, I was actually trying to kill people in the ring. He was telling the truth. Muhammad was the most gifted person I have ever seen. That goes for politicians, movie stars, or anyone. Liz Taylor and Richard Burton had some of it, but not as much as Muhammad Ali. He had everything - charisma, charm, looks and great athletic ability - and you hated him because the guy was handsome. You thought 'If I could just mess his face up a little', but you couldn’t get near him in that ring. When I lost to Muhammad in the former Zaire, I was full of hate. I said to myself 'I’m going to come back, and I’m going to get him because I hate him'. Then I left boxing, and I was on the street corner preaching. I’d cut off my hair, my moustache, and a lot of people were passing me by. Then one day I started preaching that I had lost to Muhammad Ali, and I'd fought the great Joe Frazier, and it was those names that made people stop and pay some attention to me. It was in that moment, for the first time, I really appreciated that I had been in the ring with him. Who cared if I’d lost … Just to be associated with that name of Muhammad Ali was a blessing in my life. Was he a great boxer? No, he wasn’t. Muhammad was not a great boxer. I say that because his greatness went beyond boxing, beyond just being a boxer. As a matter of fact, it would be belittling to him to label him ‘a great boxer’ because then people wouldn’t know that he changed the world. He really did. He changed the whole world. Give that title to Joe Louis or someone like him who really was a boxer. It wasn’t about being a great boxer. Sure, he was a great boxer, but there have been a lot of better boxers. His greatness was beyond the sport of boxing. Boxing was such a small part of what he could do. I remember when I won the heavyweight championship of the world, we didn’t want to be called 'champion', what we really wanted was to be 'the guy who beat Muhammad Ali'. We wanted that more than to be champion of the world. That’s really what we wanted. To beat Muhammad Ali. The truth is - nobody could beat Muhammad Ali. Even when you beat him, people said you hadn’t really beaten him, nobody would say that he had lost, and they still wanted to get his autograph, and get the chance to get hugged and kissed by him. Even when you had the belt. He made great society changes. I think with Muhammad Ali, when he went to Europe, Africa, Saudi Arabia, the whole world wanted to touch him. Period. And all of a sudden they realised that this man had changed what people had looked at as beautiful. He defined beauty, handsome and brains. That changed the whole world. Not only in America. His greatness was abroad as well. After 1981 we became the best of friends. By 1984, we loved each other. I am not closer to anyone else in this life than I am to Muhammad Ali. Why? We were forged by that first fight in Zaire and our lives are indelibly linked, and the photographs, inextricably linked as young men and old men. As men, we have a love for each other. In 1974, I was a big brooding mean heavyweight: I’ve become in a way like him. When I'm asked if I learnt anything from him, what I truly learnt from him - because I honestly hit him with some of the heaviest shots I’ve ever hit anyone with - I realised for the first time I was faced by a man who could not go down even if he wanted to. He couldn’t fall because too many people were pulling for him. And I learnt that when I was fighting Michael Moorer [to become the oldest heavyweight champion in history, and oldest champion at that time.] Sure I was being hit by shots and he was being hit by a lot of shots, but I remembered in that fight - and the one against Evander Holyfield - that when people depend on you, you just can’t decide I’m going down. You got to fight for what they believe in. That’s what I learned from Muhammad Ali. Punches can hurt but you can’t go down when people are praying for you. You've got to stand there and take your punches. I didn’t know that when I fought him, but I knew that afterwards. Maybe we are defined by our spirits. In Africa, with those people screaming for him, Ali just couldn’t do it. He just couldn't go down. When you have people pulling and praying for you, it’s a hard thing to be defeated. I think in the world of international sport, not just in America, you have Muhammad Ali. Then you have the rest. He is the standard bearer for American sports. That era when Joe Frazier was heavyweight champion of the world, when I was heavyweight champ, and when Muhammad Ali was heavyweight champion was a golden era, that will never be repeated. There was Jerry Quarry, Earnie Shevers, all the way down the line, deep, there were so many great contenders. There will never be an era with so many contenders, when, on any given night, one of those men could beat the other. That was the greatest era of boxing. Period. I hope I live to see another era like that. But I don’t think we will. In my day, I’ve met a lot of World War II survivors, true heroes. You would not even notice if they had a wooden leg or a wooden arm, or one eye. You don’t feel sorry for them. You feel blessed that they participated in the war for your sake. So whenever I see Muhammad Ali, I feel such pride because he is a hero. Heroes always have their scars. Some you can see, some you read about later on. It’s just that we know about his. That man is a hero. What he endured, and what he suffered, is just what all heroes go through. He’s not ashamed of it. He became the Greatest to me when he came out in front of the whole world and lit the Olympic torch in Los Angeles. He wasn’t ashamed. And to this day I am proud of him. He’s a hero. I become a part of him every day. Every day I love him more. He doesn’t have to say anything now. The time has come where there is nothing else left to say. He said it all. I'm reminded of my step father, the only father I ever had. He told me when Ali first started, he watched every fight, he said, "That's the greatest boxer I've ever seen. As long as you live never never bet against him."(big praise as the old man loved Joe Louis). The old man didn't hesitate to tell any one who said anything bad about Ali "Love him or hate him, he stood up for what he believed. They took everything he had away from him, yet he stood strong. Now he's got it all back, you got to admire a man like that." I read Muhammad's book The Greatest, while visiting the old man, he was watching the movie, on tv. I mentioned I read the book, he said tell me about it. Dad only had a 3rd grade education, reading wasn't a strong point. I proceeded to give him an oral book report. He listened like a little kid, his eyes twinkled. I'll never forget that. The old man was gone 4 yrs later from cancer. But I remember when he said "Ali would've beaten Joe Louis, easily." Shocking but true. The old man taught me to respect people, all people. Treat them how you'd like to be treated. And most important perhaps, don't let anyone stand in your way when you're chasing your dreams. Let people talk bad all they want, you be you. I miss him so much, he's been gone since 1986, but I think of him often. I think of Ali too, both were what was once called "Mens men". Meaning the type of man every man should strive to be. It was a foggy Day in San Francisco back in 1964. I was taking a sip of water from the drinking fountain in School, late Afternoon, and a kid yelled out " Cassius Clay" is fighting Sonny Liston Tonight. Let me say this. This Guy was The Fastest Fighter ever seen! " Lightning in a Bottle". He was good looking, had the best personality, called the rounds of his fights, Shook up the world beating Sonny Liston, and the world was truly shocked when he beat Big George Foreman in the " Rumble in the Jungle". He was the " People's Champion of all races. He was for the underdog! He turned boxing into a art, as he broke out with the " Ali Shuffle" in 1966 against Cleveland Williams. I was fortunate to meet Ali three times, and have a picture of us shaking Hands. He out shined all sports and people back in the Day. A American Icon. He truly will be missed. You can go to amazon and read the first chapter and find out what it's like to get in the ring with Ali and get hit by him once or twice and feel your legs buckle - you'll come away with a whole new appreciation of what great fighters do and how they do it. As a matter of fact, it would be belittling to him to label him ‘a great boxer’ because then people wouldn’t know that he changed the world. He really did. He changed the whole world. Give that title to Joe Louis or someone like him who really was a boxer.
It wasn’t about being a great boxer. Sure, he was a great boxer, but there have been a lot of better boxers.
His greatness was beyond the sport of boxing. Boxing was such a small part of what he could do.
I remember when I won the heavyweight championship of the world, we didn’t want to be called 'champion', what we really wanted was to be 'the guy who beat Muhammad Ali'.
We wanted that more than to be champion of the world. That’s really what we wanted. To beat Muhammad Ali. The truth is - nobody could beat Muhammad Ali.
Even when you beat him, people said you hadn’t really beaten him, nobody would say that he had lost, and they still wanted to get his autograph, and get the chance to get hugged and kissed by him.
Even when you had the belt. He made great society changes. I think with Muhammad Ali, when he went to Europe, Africa, Saudi Arabia, the whole world wanted to touch him. Period.
And all of a sudden they realised that this man had changed what people had looked at as beautiful. He defined beauty, handsome and brains. That changed the whole world. Not only in America.
His greatness was abroad as well. After 1981 we became the best of friends. By 1984, we loved each other. I am not closer to anyone else in this life than I am to Muhammad Ali. Why?
We were forged by that first fight in Zaire and our lives are indelibly linked, and the photographs, inextricably linked as young men and old men. As men, we have a love for each other.
In 1974, I was a big brooding mean heavyweight: I’ve become in a way like him. When I'm asked if I learnt anything from him, what I truly learnt from him - because I honestly hit him with some of the heaviest shots I’ve ever hit anyone with - I realised for the first time I was faced by a man who could not go down even if he wanted to.
He couldn’t fall because too many people were pulling for him. And I learnt that when I was fighting Michael Moorer [to become the oldest heavyweight champion in history, and oldest champion at that time.]
Sure I was being hit by shots and he was being hit by a lot of shots, but I remembered in that fight - and the one against Evander Holyfield - that when people depend on you, you just can’t decide I’m going down. You got to fight for what they believe in. That’s what I learned from Muhammad Ali.
Punches can hurt but you can’t go down when people are praying for you. You've got to stand there and take your punches. I didn’t know that when I fought him, but I knew that afterwards.
Maybe we are defined by our spirits. In Africa, with those people screaming for him, Ali just couldn’t do it. He just couldn't go down. When you have people pulling and praying for you, it’s a hard thing to be defeated. I think in the world of international sport, not just in America, you have Muhammad Ali. Then you have the rest.
He is the standard bearer for American sports. That era when Joe Frazier was heavyweight champion of the world, when I was heavyweight champ, and when Muhammad Ali was heavyweight champion was a golden era, that will never be repeated.
There was Jerry Quarry, Earnie Shevers, all the way down the line, deep, there were so many great contenders. There will never be an era with so many contenders, when, on any given night, one of those men could beat the other. That was the greatest era of boxing. Period.
I hope I live to see another era like that. But I don’t think we will. In my day, I’ve met a lot of World War II survivors, true heroes. You would not even notice if they had a wooden leg or a wooden arm, or one eye.
You don’t feel sorry for them. You feel blessed that they participated in the war for your sake.
So whenever I see Muhammad Ali, I feel such pride because he is a hero. Heroes always have their scars. Some you can see, some you read about later on. It’s just that we know about his. That man is a hero. What he endured, and what he suffered, is just what all heroes go through.
He’s not ashamed of it. He became the Greatest to me when he came out in front of the whole world and lit the Olympic torch in Los Angeles. He wasn’t ashamed. And to this day I am proud of him.
He’s a hero. I become a part of him every day. Every day I love him more. He doesn’t have to say anything now. The time has come where there is nothing else left to say. He said it all.
He’s the greatest American that ever lived. We have heroes, they weren’t representing anything. This is a real one, here.

I'm reminded of my step father, the only father I ever had. He told me when Ali first started, he watched every fight, he said, "That's the greatest boxer I've ever seen. As long as you live never never bet against him."(big praise as the old man loved Joe Louis). The old man didn't hesitate to tell any one who said anything bad about Ali "Love him or hate him, he stood up for what he believed. They took everything he had away from him, yet he stood strong. Now he's got it all back, you got to admire a man like that." I read Muhammad's book The Greatest, while visiting the old man, he was watching the movie, on tv. I mentioned I read the book, he said tell me about it. Dad only had a 3rd grade education, reading wasn't a strong point. I proceeded to give him an oral book report. He listened like a little kid, his eyes twinkled. I'll never forget that. The old man was gone 4 yrs later from cancer. But I remember when he said "Ali would've beaten Joe Louis, easily." Shocking but true. The old man taught me to respect people, all people. Treat them how you'd like to be treated. And most important perhaps, don't let anyone stand in your way when you're chasing your dreams. Let people talk bad all they want, you be you. I miss him so much, he's been gone since 1986, but I think of him often. I think of Ali too, both were what was once called "Mens men". Meaning the type of man every man should strive to be. I'm done.

This Guy was The Fastest Fighter ever seen! " Lightning in a Bottle". He was good looking, had the best personality, called the rounds of his fights, Shook up the world beating Sonny Liston, and the world was truly shocked when he beat Big George Foreman in the " Rumble in the Jungle". He was the " People's Champion of all races. He was for the underdog! He turned boxing into a art, as he broke out with the " Ali Shuffle" in 1966 against Cleveland Williams. I was fortunate to meet Ali three times, and have a picture of us shaking Hands. He out shined all sports and people back in the Day. A American Icon. He truly will be missed. You can go to amazon and read the first chapter and find out what it's like to get in the ring with Ali and get hit by him once or twice and feel your legs buckle - you'll come away with a whole new appreciation of what great fighters do and how they do it.
