Thanks! I think u might ad that one could remove the Symlinks from the Ext Drive after they have been copied back to the boot drive..although it’s not crucial.. I think..
Glad it was helpful! Better still, you can cut/paste with an app like XtraFinder. You're correct, the Symbolic Links do not serve any purpose if you leave them on your external drive.
okay, can someone please explain why is this not working for me. I have symlinked all three folders and it is working as I can see the symlinker arrow on Logic, GarageBand and the Apple Loops. However when I install new content in logic it does take the space from my hard drive. When I go to inspect the storage in About this Mac section it appears to be in Music Creation (Instrument Library) . When I click on it it takes me to my external drive, where I've moved all the content..so if it is there why the heck does take my internal storage space?? it doesn't make sense.
Your samples only need to live on your external drive now. Once you've moved the Symbolic Links to your system drive, you can delete the original copies if you left them on your external drive - they aren't doing anything there; once moved to your OS drive, the Links will remember where they came from. Glad you found it helpful!
This is an excellent video. I have a question for you though. Prior to looking at your video it was suggested on another video that a symbolic link for the Garageband/Instrument Library be made on the external drive. I see that you recommend making the symbolic link to Garageband/Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Files which seems to make more sense. Would you recommend that I redo my link to match your suggestion or do you think I won't have any unforeseen problems either way? I hope you continue to make more videos. You have a unique perspective and thanks!
Thanks, and thanks for watching! It shouldn't really matter, so long as the file path and folder names remain intact. It mostly depends on which files you want to offload from your system drive. I specifically chose the Sampler Files because I get the biggest bang for my buck. As far as my system drive's space is concerned, Plug-In Settings, Track Settings, and Sampler Instruments take up a negligible amount of space, so I don't feel the need to move them.
how did it work,, please help.. i tried all the stuff in the video.. i used symbolic linker.. i also renamed the files as mentioned... but again it starts downloading when i open Logic .. i've tried almost 14times past 2days plz help , I'm using Logic Pro X 10.4.1 and Mac OSX 10.14.1 Mojave
The only things you should be renaming are the symbolic links (which you've created from samples folders you already moved to your external drive), and don't forget to remove any trailing spaces. Make sure you then move the symbolic links back to the original place of the samples folders. Without knowing the steps you took or being able to see your system, I'd just recommend to start from scratch and carefully follow the instructions one by one. Please feel free to download the PDF (use the discount code so you can get it for free) if that might be easier for you to work from.
I want to do this But When I try to install symboliclinker and I want to put it in the services folder there is no services folder. They say I have to make my own services folder what I did and then I put it in there and opened it but it doesn’t install. Really frustrating.
Ruben Dijksma your services folder should be at Macintosh HD > Library > Services. And the Symbolic Linker service should be in that Services folder. You don't "install" it. You just open it once from where it is in the Services folder to start the service (and accept the 3rd party app warning). Then, right click or control click any folder in Finder. If you see an additional item at the bottom of the context menu called "Make Symbolic Link" (or, if you have other services activated, it'll be in a "Services" submenu at the bottom of the context click menu), then you've activated the service successfully.
Alex Cap yeah I know but there was no services folder in the library folder, in the instructions folder they say that you have to make your own one but it doesn’t work
Ruben Dijksma I have set this up again recently on another computer that did not have a Services folder, so I created the folder and everything worked fine, so I'm not sure what you're running into. What OS are you on? Also check your Security & Privacy settings.
Been trying to make symlinks for the GarageBand, Logic, and Apple Loops folders as recommended in another video, but the symlink folders I place on my SSD still have files in them. I am going to try the method in this video, but symlink folders are supposed to to be empty correct?
That usually means the symbolic link is broken, so Logic can't follow the link's path to the files it expects to see. A symbolic link will break whenever you move the files that were being linked to or rename the drive those files are on. I'd delete the old symbolic links, leave your samples/loops/Logic instruments on your external drive or wherever you moved them to, and create new symbolic links. Just follow my video for naming and location. Also, thanks for subscribing! Appreciate it.
I redid everything and I still keep getting the same message when logic opens it thanks me for downloading logic and asks if I'm new. Then it trys to download an "essential collection of sounds and loops."
Strange. Another thing to keep in mind is that the folder structure should "look" the same from Logic's point of view whether the symbolic link is there or not. All else failing maybe let it download and try to find where it downloaded to and take note of the path... Maybe your setup is somehow different than mine?

Worked perfectly thanks a lot. Much more complicated with the terminal method
Great! Yes, and this application is very light weight.
superduper walkthru, elegant and crystal clear, cheerz
Thanks, glad it was helpful!
Do i leave both the copied files and the link files on my external hard drive or can i delete either link files?
great video too, thanks!

Absolutely grateful with you alex, you've helped me a lot!

what about moving komplete content library ....oris it better to just reinstall the content to the desired location path
*or is
Just move the library and tell Kontakt/Native Access your new library location. No need for symbolic links.
I just had to do this native has an article that takes you step by step.

Hi Aaron, thanks for the comment. Try going through my video step-by-step, and let me know if you have any more questions after that.
Many thanks! Very helpful.
Great, glad it was useful to you!
Every time I open logic now it trys to download the loops pack. Any suggestions?
