much love and respect for this video as it probably helped many out a few years ago but the latest logic 10.8.1 now allows you to relocate the sound library from within the sound library drop down window
After watching so many tutorials yours was the only one that actually helped. I was beginning to think that I would never get the external drive to work but alas! it has! yay!!
Fantastic, I've been searching for a way to move my Apple Loops (The Apple library can be more easily moved by Logic Pro X > Sound Library > Relocate Sound Library)
Finally! Thank you so much. It worked for me. I have Logic 10.2.2 because its the latest upgrade that works on OS 10.9.5. I tried a lot of tricks and yours was the only solution that worked
Definitely a great tutorial. If I don't install all the sounds right away, can I install them directly to the external hard drive afterwards? Or how would I get the sounds I didn't install after this.
Thanks for the great video. Does the hard drive now have two versions of each folder, seeing as you made a simlink copy? In that case you would need double the hard drive space?
If you have one external hard drive would you put the sound library and projects on it together? And leave the internal hard drive with just the applications?
What would happen if Logic updates with new sound samples? Would we have to repeat this process again or will the files be sent over to the external hard drive folder?
Hi, I followed the process that you have shown in your video, great video by the way! And copied everything to my external hard drive, However I notice now that logic pro is not finding or playing any of the drummers that I had previously downloaded and have used on past projects and of which still appear in the files on the external hard drive which I’ve just created, also every time I open Logic Pro now it keeps asking me to download files n loops as there is missing content. Can you help with any advise please? Andy.
Thank you man! Question. I got the new logic now, I guess there are new sounds. Do you think I should download the whole library again and do this process again? Or can I put in my old library file and download the missing new stuff ? Edit: If I download new sounds in Logic, will it download onto the symlink folder on the external drive?
ok thanks learning this processed helped but didnt know which location you were talking about ie weather internal or external when referencing folders so left me a bit confused trying different methods think i got it working tho so thanks
I just got a lot of drum sounds and effect noises that I want to use in the logic library where it has sounds. i keep many in there but I have so many now. how can I have them in the right side of logic where it is my untagged sounds but only when I plug hard drive in. this way when I need sounds I just use that
Are you saying this approach works as well if the external drive is NOT an SSD drive. Do answer if you can, thanks. By the way I believe Logic files are now 93 gb. Thanks for the video!
ive tried this, all the files are as they should be, but when i go to logic and go to the loops is says they still need to be downloaded? any ideas? thnks
I've done every step as in your video. When I open Logic back up and open sound library "installed" does not show on all the ones that were there before. Hardly any say that actually and some say incomplete. My external drive shows I have everything on there but when I close and open logic back up the first thing it asks is to install all the essential sounds I had on there before. Basically everything I had, so I skip through it, I can tell on my projects that I don't have all of my sound library installed. What do I do now?
Hey thanks a lot for the video, it was really helpfull. I have one question though, will future updates for the sound library be available or every time the sound database is updated we need to create new links? Again, thanks a lot.
the problem is. i made this steps long time ago for garage band before i moved to logic pro. and has the same name "apple loops" and "logic" folder too. While my "apple loops" and "logic" folder in my garage band has been replaced to symbolic link. how to make it success for logic pro too? i made it for "logic" folder, but cant for "apple loops" because the same name. can i just rename the source name as "apple loops logic pro x" and "logic pro x"? tq.
Hi, ive completed all steps up to 7:15 and for some reason it comes up with a prompt that says "this app has an unidentified source"? I went to system prefrences and allowed the app to run anyways, but it still won't allow me to "make symbolic link". Please HELP!!!
Anyone know why my sound library has been moved to my external drive, but the internal drive still shows the size of the file being used as data on the INTERNAL drive. When I look in the storage manager it even says 98G for music library... then shows the music library on the EXTERNAL drive... If I eject the external drive, the space shows up for the INTERNAL drive - until I plug the external back in again. Anyone know what's going on and how to fix this?
Reinold Guzman Yes i actually have with pretty bad results unfortunately. The aliases often breaks when your disconnecting and connecting your external hard drive. This method works even though you disconnect external disks.
Broo I formatted my mac and installed logic pro once again I had transferred the sound library folder to my hard disk How can i use it in my new installed Logic pro ?🥺 I don't have internet to download the full sound library
briskyfilms at first i entered the wrong library folder, i couldnt find the main library which is in the internal hard drive. But i found it through terminal
Does moving Logic’s sound library to an external HD improve Logic’s performance? If so, what does it improve. In my case I have a MacBook Pro with 1TB storage on a 5400 rpm hard drive. If I move the sound library to SSD external drive will I notice any difference in Logic? Thanks!
@Music-Prod what about when apple brings new sounds to download? will it be automatically downloaded to the hard drive folder or I need to go through this process again?
See my newest video on how to move sound library to external hard drive. It's a solution provided by Apple so if they will change the sound library, it would still be moved to the external hard drive.
I did everything in the video - Downloaded sound library - Create 'Services' folder and moved sym link over - Copied to external hd - Created Symbolic Links, copied to appropriate libraries - Deleted original 'logic' and 'apple loops' - Renamed sym links to original names - BUT THEN...open logic and it prompts to install essential library, and none of the extra sounds are installed. Any idea what I could be doing wrong?
Chris Reyes I got tired of trying. I have 22gb of free space after downloading the libraries. Luckily it’s a busted MacBook that I only use for recording music. I might give it another go-let me know if you figured it out.
Once you've paid for logic it's yours. I just installed an NVMe SSD and put a new OS on it, but kept another SSD with an old OS and my old version of logic. I just went to the app store, downloaded the logic update to my new drive which installed it cleanly and then I just redownloaded all the library stuff. I didn't need to have the old version of logic on my new SSD drive. They may have a certain number of times you can reinstall and authorize before it triggers a security warning or something, but I don't really know. Obviously I'm not at any limit yet so there you go. You should be fine.
sooo i dont have enough space in my Local HD to download all sounds and it appears that logic still abides my local HD space oppose to my 1tb external HD
okay, can someone please explain why is this not working for me. I have symlinked all three folders and it is working as I can see the symlinker arrow on Logic, GarageBand and the Apple Loops. However when I install new content in logic it does take the space from my hard drive. When I go to inspect the storage in About this Mac section it appears to be in Music Creation (Instrument Library) . When I click on it it takes me to my external drive, where I've moved all the content..so if it is there why the heck does take my internal storage space?? it doesn't make sense.
Logic pro 10.4.3 just hit, 10.4.2 you can just relocate sound library. However, for me I have a 512GB ssd on my 2015 mbp, I just do a full install. SSD's do best when you keep at least 10% or more free space.
I'm all with you on this. It's super annoying that Apple is so behind on the practical stuff that other DAW's are way better at. I hope Apple will release a major Logic update soon. The time between the releases of Logic 9 and 10 was about 4 years. It has now been almost 5 years since the release of Logic 10. I now hope there will be a new version - maybe Logic Pro 11?
It's incredibly frustrating for people (such as me) who are windows experienced and don't have the Mac system knowledge or experience to know their way around. Logic itself is an incredibly simple but powerful DAW to use and I have no fault with it, it just seems it's the indirect and non day-to-day tasks outwith your normal workflow that are inconvenient & in bad need of streamlining. Thanks for the video though, I'll try this method later.
Right on point Mark. I'm more experienced in the Mac world than the Windows OS and I get your frustration. If you want to see how I work more in depth as a Mac user with a nice worked out everyday workflow, make sure to check out my complete Logic 101 course which covers the creation of 2 full songs www.udemy.com/logic-pro-x-manual-101-complete-masterclass/?couponCode=FORONLY12
The fact that it is drag and drop ease on PC and annoyingly frustrating mess on the Mac makes me think of giving up on logic . Been running it since forever . Makes me wonder if they are really run by monkeys throwing shit at a board with choices just to be "Apple Different" .
Edward Houston On the latest update there a option to relocate your sound library. If you go up to logic pro X in the top left corner then sound library and there should be a option that says “relocate sound library” there you should have the option to choose your external hard drive
What if I don’t have enough room to download the whole library in the first place. Can I download half, relocate that, then download the second half and relocate that. Is that possible. Anyone?
That is exactly what I had to do and it worked perfectly! I did modify his instructions though- instead of making a symlink for only the "apple loops" file I created a symlink for the whole "audio" file (this will save you more room on your laptop). Now that you have the two symlink files replaced as your old "logic" and "audio" files you should be able to download the rest of the sounds that haven't been installed with ease. here are the instructions- Logic pro x > sound library > open sound library manager... Now that you're here, you may have to download only a few selections at a time but everything should go directly to your extended hard drive. Hope I was of timely assistance. Also, I haven't seen the "relocate sound library" option for my logic software but that may be something you want to look into (read the other comments about that)
Jordan Renner Thanks much for the reply. Will keep this noted might try it later. I did find the relocate button - maybe it’s only in the latest version? - so did that for now. Although that could create a new problem later which is what do I do when the software updates and adds new libraries. Will cross that bridge when I come to it.

these are great! thanks!
It's not free.

Definitely a great tutorial. If I don't install all the sounds right away, can I install them directly to the external hard drive afterwards? Or how would I get the sounds I didn't install after this.
Thank you a LOT! Making Aliases didn't work for me but this solution proved itself.
Thanks for the great video. Does the hard drive now have two versions of each folder, seeing as you made a simlink copy?
In that case you would need double the hard drive space?
If you have one external hard drive would you put the sound library and projects on it together? And leave the internal hard drive with just the applications?
Worked 100% for me. Thank you master !
Big time help. APPreciate you!!
What would happen if Logic updates with new sound samples? Would we have to repeat this process again or will the files be sent over to the external hard drive folder?

i am your BIGGEST fan for this one
Thank you man! Question. I got the new logic now, I guess there are new sounds. Do you think I should download the whole library again and do this process again? Or can I put in my old library file and download the missing new stuff ?
Edit: If I download new sounds in Logic, will it download onto the symlink folder on the external drive?
So this will make logic run smoother and prevent system overload?
Will it save future sounds in the folder on the hardrive also?
So simple. All over the Internet but this is the one
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this tutorial for those of us less advanced in this area. I appreciate you for you doing this!
Oh man, this is totally great. Solved a long standing problem for me. Thank you a million times!!
@music-prod is it true if you are using Sierra this doesn't work?? I followed every step and it just wants to re-download all the sounds.
question about external hdd... do i need make a new folder name like "library?
If you down load new loops will they be saved in to the other drive? Were you move all the loops to!
Bro... You Saved MY LIFEEE!! THANK YOU!
my life too :)
ok thanks learning this processed helped but didnt know which location you were talking about ie weather internal or external when referencing folders so left me a bit confused trying different methods think i got it working tho so thanks

Could you please help me download library directly in sym link folder?
ive tried this, all the files are as they should be, but when i go to logic and go to the loops is says they still need to be downloaded? any ideas? thnks
Can you do this with other vst’s?
I've done every step as in your video. When I open Logic back up and open sound library "installed" does not show on all the ones that were there before. Same here !! my OSX is 10.14.4
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY MAC WHERE I ORIGINALLY DOWNLOADED AND INSTALLED LOGIC BRAKES
BUT I HAVE ALL LIBRARY ON EXTERNAL DISC AS SHOWN HERE
THANKS
Hey thanks a lot for the video, it was really helpfull. I have one question though, will future updates for the sound library be available or every time the sound database is updated we need to create new links? Again, thanks a lot.
So does this work with the new version of Logic Pro?
hi, i want to ask a question. is the external drive will be linked automatically when logic pro is being updated?
Wish he would have showed the system storage usage before and after. That's actually a lot more work than I was expecting
the problem is. i made this steps long time ago for garage band before i moved to logic pro. and has the same name "apple loops" and "logic" folder too. While my "apple loops" and "logic" folder in my garage band has been replaced to symbolic link. how to make it success for logic pro too? i made it for "logic" folder, but cant for "apple loops" because the same name. can i just rename the source name as "apple loops logic pro x" and "logic pro x"? tq.
Great video man! Im so glad i finally got it working! couldn't have done it without you
Hi, ive completed all steps up to 7:15 and for some reason it comes up with a prompt that says "this app has an unidentified source"? I went to system prefrences and allowed the app to run anyways, but it still won't allow me to "make symbolic link". Please HELP!!!
all g i found them on my desktop :) but now logic pro x doesnt register that the library is on an ex hdd, it says so many files are missing...
Seems to have worked just fine but now my plugin presets don't show up. Any ideas how to fix that?
Would this work for third party plugins? I have some drum libraries through Kontakt, guitar plugins, and also slate digital all access.
After i done that i am not able to select plug ins that i could before. Pls help thx
This actually worked! Thanks a lot!
do you also need to delete de word symlink from the document that is in the hard drive?
Anyone know why my sound library has been moved to my external drive, but the internal drive still shows the size of the file being used as data on the INTERNAL drive. When I look in the storage manager it even says 98G for music library... then shows the music library on the EXTERNAL drive... If I eject the external drive, the space shows up for the INTERNAL drive - until I plug the external back in again. Anyone know what's going on and how to fix this?
Have you ever considered using “Alias” folders? I think is the same but it works natively, without using third-party apps. I have never tried it tho.
Reinold Guzman Yes i actually have with pretty bad results unfortunately. The aliases often breaks when your disconnecting and connecting your external hard drive. This method works even though you disconnect external disks.
I tried using the Alias option but Logic asked me to re- download the whole library again. Symbolic Link made the job easy
Broo
I formatted my mac and installed logic pro once again
I had transferred the sound library folder to my hard disk
How can i use it in my new installed Logic pro ?🥺
I don't have internet to download the full sound library
Thank you so much for this video. Super detailed and you got straight to the point. 10/10
Perfect! Worked like a champ! Thank you!
Does this make logic run faster necessarily? Or just saves space?
This is fantastic - really appreciate your help!
Thank you so much!! Awesome video, very helpful and thorough
thank you so much man!! it worked.. finally
did it really? im about to try. you did every step?
briskyfilms yep :)
briskyfilms at first i entered the wrong library folder, i couldnt find the main library which is in the internal hard drive. But i found it through terminal
Adil A what command do i enter in terminal? i cant find the library through it
briskyfilms go to terminal and copy and paste this chflags nohidden ~/Library/ and click enter
Can You Please Make A Video On How You Were Able To Bypass Scanning Audio Units Everytime During Startup It Would Be Most Helpful.
Great work sir. Thank you so much. Now my Mac has much more space.
So do you delete the symlink on the external hard drive?
Does moving Logic’s sound library to an external HD improve Logic’s performance? If so, what does it improve. In my case I have a MacBook Pro with 1TB storage on a 5400 rpm hard drive. If I move the sound library to SSD external drive will I notice any difference in Logic? Thanks!
Great question. Did you ever find the answer?
thanks bro. i learned from you a long tie ago but havent moved anything in a while and forgot the steps so thank you again for the help lol.
Sir I want to buy this software
can it be any hard drive? I have a Toshiba one. My HD is greyed out when I tried to relocate the sound library. will it work if I do it this way?
Wao man.. thnks... mine is macbook air..and u save so much of my space...
@Music-Prod what about when apple brings new sounds to download? will it be automatically downloaded to the hard drive folder or I need to go through this process again?

Any idea what I could be doing wrong?
Just remember to plug in your hard drive before you run the logic.
Same problem idk what happened I was able to use it about 2-3 times then it stopped working for me as if I just downloaded it
Have you figured it out?
Chris Reyes I got tired of trying. I have 22gb of free space after downloading the libraries. Luckily it’s a busted MacBook that I only use for recording music. I might give it another go-let me know if you figured it out.
Im thinking of dragging them back to the Internal HD
Thank you so much. It worked for me as well.
Excellent. Works perfectly.
Why does it say I have to download sounds for every project i open? Usually around 2G file size
This did not work for me using sym link I even changed the symlink name upon storing the Sum link folder on my HDD. Does this not work for HI-SIERRA?
Thanks my man. Solved a big one for me
Hey man, I followed your instructions exactly, and now neither Logic, nor Garageband will launch. Any ideas on what went wrong and how to fix?
This is working
I've just followed all these steps, but as soon as I open Logic it's wanting to download all the samples again... help?
I had the same problem!!!!
Thanks Fam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hi,can anyone tell me what happens if i loose the external hardisk....would i be able to install again the software or do i need to purchase it again

THIS DOESNT WORK ON HIGH SIERRA IS THERE A WORK AROUND? THANK YOU
sooo i dont have enough space in my Local HD to download all sounds and it appears that logic still abides my local HD space oppose to my 1tb external HD
Thanks!! This worked for me.
Can I delete the symbolic link application ?
thank you !
Yes sir!! Hallelujah
this has helped me SO MUCH Thank You Very Much For This Tutorial
so amazing! thank you! I am indebted to you!!!
why u didnt use "make alias"?
Messed up all my songs, nice one
I clicked on "make symbolic link" but the folder never created under it? How can I fix that?
Do this work for the logic on the m1?
Yes!
okay, can someone please explain why is this not working for me.
Whats the reason to move to externally hard drive?
Basically to not using up a lot of SSD disk space for sounds that you won't use frequently and/or doesn't need the internal SSD resources (speed).
Thanks dude
THANK YOU!!!
very helpful
I thinks is bc my external hard drive is slow loading all the stuff in it, why is that???
Awesome!
Damn cool! Thanks for that...
