Love the video man and I can tell you know what you're talking about. The rest of us are most likely are not at your level so it would be extremely helpful if you slowed down with each step and didn't rush so much in your explanations. I'm slowly, but surely, working away at getting this set up. I appreciate the help.
Thanks for the feedback, and glad the video helped! Yea, I'm still trying to get a balance between speed and information. The video is either too fast, or too slow :P Part of the struggle comes from the fact that I haven't figured out who to target with my videos -- people with little experience, some experience, or a lot of experience just looking for a quick tip.
Dude, Sincerely, Thankyou.. This problem has been annoying me for weeks and your video just got me through my first ever use of Terminal. I had a few hiccups but what I learned in Terminal I fixed with my own file paths based on knowledge from your video. All sample now running cleanly from my SSD and logic has no idea!! Thanks heaps!
Ok so I got all the way to the end and I can't find the Logic folder in Application Support. BUT, I am in fact able to run Logic and it doesn't freak out like you demonstrated. I'm gonna attempt to record and see what happens and keep you updated.
really great info, thanks. might i suggest that you slooooww way down in explaining things. what is common knowledge to you is not to us, thats why we are watching your video. also you would not make as many confusing errors if you took the time to think before you speak and click. just a recommendation. dont get me wrong you really know your stuff and this is a great video, i just had to keep rewinding because you were speaking so fast. thanks again
Thanks! Yea, sorry about that. I'll do my best -- one issue my videos have is the length, so in this case I talked a bit faster to help amend that, but now I can see that it can cause issues.
holy crap!! i need to watch this over and over im trying to get my vst packs to my external and i hope his can help would like better break down or can you do one for vst pack thank you again
With the little knowledge I have, while trying to understand the use of Terminal you do tend to waste time talking about 'What if' and 'Why' when all I need to know is how. Not saying that all the info isn't there.
Interesting. I've always thought that explaining the deeper "why" things work would make explaining how to do something easier. I'll do my best to tone it back! I might do two-part videos or something, where one goes over how to do something, and the other is why. Or alternatively, a video series on UNIX/macOS fundamentals so the inner workings of, say, Terminal can make sense for the people who want to know. I guess for me personally, I've always been curious as to why things work, and not that "they work". Thanks for the feedback!
Help! I bought a new ssd external drive. Would I be able to drag and drop my folder with the sym link to my new external hardrive or do I need to recreate the links again?
Thank you very much for this! It was the best tutorial I found and worked for my set-up for a couple of years. I have a question: now I’d like to reverse the process (because of updates etc.) but I’m worried I’ll lose my work. Do I have to go into terminal again, or can I simply put the folders back and erase the symlinks? Can’t seem to find the answer... Any advice much appreciated.
Yeah, you'll need to `cd` into where the symlink is and type `unlink` then the symlink. See this article for more detailed steps! osxdaily.com/2016/05/25/how-delete-symbolic-link-symlink/
@@pkos91 Thank you Peter, much appreciated! After following those steps, I assume I do the reverse of your video and copy the folders from my external hard drive back into their locations on my computer. Cheers!
Man I only want to move the components folder with the AU for logic to an external drive I have 30gb of AU plug-ins and want to make space can this be done on 2023 on a intel Mac from 2019? 😅
I was running logic off of an external HD which is no longer able to save, but upgraded my external HD anyway. Would I be able to simply drag over the contents of the old external to the new or would I have to recreate the paths to save specifically to my new HD? Thanks
@@selahkeys I don't quite remember, it was a mess but I'm pretty sure I went into terminal and just created symlinks to the new hard drive and trashed the old symlinks. For some reason I have to save projects to my macintosh HD but at least the giant logic library is on my new one now.
If you want to have one library across two computers, one being Intel-based and the other Apple ARM (M1, M2, etc.), then on the second computer (in my case, it was the M1), you will still need to allow Logic to download and install all the sound libraries you want. This will result in a slightly larger Library folder size. However, you will achieve the objective of having a single library directory for both computers.
So ONCE AGAIN... Do I have to install it on the main drive first? (LOGIC Pro) are we only referring to the additional Files and recorded material to be transferred to the External? If so how much space should the actual Logic Pro file without the extra downloads be? Around 2-7 gbs?
I have a question, If i were to download just some of the additional content just enough to create the folder to completely install the actual application. When i go to create the symlink and download the rest of the additional content would it download to the external drive? because the computer i'm using doesn't have enough ssd to store the 50gigs of additional content i would need to download. Also when downloading plugins do they also get stored through the external drive or do you have to create a symlink for plugins as well.
Hey Brother, thanks for contributing your expertise.... one question before all else... IS IT NECESSARY to install Logic Pro on the main system Drive before I complete this process
I don't have any file named "Logic" in User Directory's ~Library/Application Support/ Could you tell me why? Really getting worried why I am not able to find it. :(
Do you know all you had to do was relocate logic sound library to an external hard drive then after that all you had to do is drag logic and drag it to the external hard drive and the erase Logic pro apps off the application. I’ve been running it like that since logic was like logic 9
hi there! i got a 120gb mac and it is too late now to change it i did all this correctly in hope to be able to download additional content to my external hard drive but whenever i try it says there is not enough space for so, even though my external drive has about 300gb free i do have installed some content already but i want all of it - any ideas? it seems Logic is not considering my additional hard drive as a place to install all of the additional files thanks!
Hey Peter, just curios on the last step. I do NOT have a Logic folder in (~/Library/Application/Support) I even tried search for the items inside such as "chord grids & loopsdatabase" any idea on where could be hiding? thanks!
Spotlight and Finder, to my knowledge, won't search directories within the Library folder. However, the file is in ~/Library/Application Support -- you seem to have typed /Application/Support, which is different than /Application Support . If you fixed the path and the Logic folder still isn't present, try reinstalling Logic Pro X, either through the App Store or by deleting it form your Applications folder and re-running the installer from wherever you acquired it from.
Hey Peter, thanks a bunch. I managed to do it, but with an external ssd. Which I will unplug sometimes. Will these symbolic links still work then? Thanks for getting back.
Hi! So, if you unplug the SSD, the directory will effectively "disappear" as the link has been removed when the drive is unplugged. As long as you don't start Logic while the device is unplugged, it should work just fine when you plug in the drive. If you *do* start Logic when the drive is not plugged in, it'll start downloading the files as if they weren't there. You may have to re-create the symlink, or alternatively the system will just figure it out. (Also note that if you have other DAWs, they might also depend on these directories, and might exhibit the same behavior as above. Just something to remember!)
when I create the symlinks they don't end up looking like a folder (ie a folder icon with an arrow) they have a generic file icon with an arrow and don't work. did the sudo thing all the syntax double checked folders already moved. so I'm puzzled. I'm on sierra.
Mine looks different just because I have a fancy theme on; if you start typing the commands, as I do, from 1:56, that should work? What od you mean exactly by "doesn't work"?
Not sure. When I attempted it, Logic gave an error and wasn't able to install it., but that may have been a bug with my version. Try it out! I'd still recommend downloading all the additional content *first*, and then copying it all to your external HDD.
Thanks for the help. I had everything working before Logic Pro X 10.4 update, however after updating, my symbolic links stopped working and using the app I downloaded called symbolic linker didn't work. Doing it this way fixed it all. Thanks for the support!
Glad to hear the video helped! Hmm, that's interesting that updating broke the symlinks. My guess is that the installer code that checks if the folder exists returns false (not a "real" folder) so it creates one, overwriting the symlink. Definitely something to look into -- thanks for the observation!
So I noticed you created symlinks of all 6 main folders for Logic (Apple Loops, Apple Loops Index, Audio Music Apps, Garageband, Logic, and Logic ~) to function in the external hard drive, but what if you just want to create a symlink for one of Logics main folders. For example, putting Apple Loops into the external hard drive and leaving the rest of the main folders on the internal hard drive. Can you do that without logic detecting any problems?
As far as I'm aware, Logic stores content in most (or all) of those separate folders: loops in Apple Loops, Garageband specific files in Garageband, etc. If you were to leave out any folder that contained content that Logic was searching for, it would think it was corrupted and attempt a re-install. So: try it! I know it works with all the folders linked, but feel free to only link certain ones and try running Logic. Worst case scenario it crashes, slightly less worse case it prompts you to download the content that's missing, and best-case it just works.
So, I am at the peak of my storage capacity on my Mac. My question is that if i create symlinks, will that transfer the storage used by these files to my external HD and off of my Mac?
When you create the symlinks, you've only copied the files to the external HDD. To actually save the space, remove the files that you just symlinked from the internal HDD (while leaving them on the external HDD)
my audio folder at the start has "Apple loops", "Apple loops index", "Impulse responses" and "Plug-ins" as my four folders instead of having the first two then just "Audio Music Apps" also. Do I just do the same but to the 4 folders or am I in the wrong place? would really appreciate a response. Thanks
Do those folders also exist in the other locations? (/Library/Application\ Support/ and ~/Library/Application\ Support) If not, back them up and replace them as well and see what happens. I think you have another audio application installed that puts the folders there.
if I go onto library then application support to find the logic folder instead even that doesn't contain the 3rd folder... don't really know what to do to get that extra bit of memory gone and using an alias for files never worked... I have garage band installed and at one point I had MainStage as well but apart from that I don't know what to do... its really important I find a solution. Thanks you so much for such a quick answer I really appreciate it as I'm not very skilled on this subject at all
Try copying the files that you have for Logic and creating the symlinks with those. Also, make sure that you're not mixing up ~/Library/Application Support and /Library/Application Support
When trying to make a link for the "Apple Loops", it says file exist but no linked folder. ALSO I cannot find an "Apple Loops Index" folder ANYWHERE. Any input would be amazing! I had to upgrade computers and go to Logic X from 9 and its been hell.
Sometimes certain folders aren't used for whatever reason. I'd suggest doing the rest of the symlinks and then try running Logic to see how it handles it. Logic should auto-create the folder if it needs it.
I have a question. So every time u downloaded a new library from logic pro, does it download directly to the "Logic" folder in the external hard drive ?
Yes! If it somehow doesn't, double-check that the symlinks are correct, and if that's still not the issue, copy everything back onto your local hard drive and then install it, then copy everything back to the external hard drive.
Hi great video, I've tried Symlinks using the app and right clinking to services but it dint work, logic still trying to download the content. my terminal won't even let me open ~> cd /Library/Audio. i just get permission denied, even after entering password after sudo -s. frustrating abit of a novice with terminal Please Help !
The password Terminal asks for is the password of the administrator account on your computer, not the password of the account you're currently logged in to. The reason why this happens in the first place is because that is the *root* Library folder. If it was the *user* library folder (~/Library/Audio, which expands to /Users/yourusername/Library/Audio), you could easily cd into it, as you have read and write access to it. However, the root directory is only accessible by the system administrator.
It didn't work for me. the Logic folder from application support doesn't exist in my system & the Apple Loops Index. when I opened Logic I got asked to download the essential sound library! :(
So I did this and it works great, but I need to rename the parent folder that the additional content is in on my external hard drive. Can I do this? Or will I have to remake the symlinks folders after I've renamed it? Btw, I downloaded even more additional content straight to my external hd after setting up the symlinks. Worked flawlessly. thanks!
I think you'll have to remake the symlink, as ~/Cool/somefolder/anotherone isn't the same as ~/Cool/otherfolder/anotherone If the symlink was created within the same parent folder, however, it would work, but these symlinks are being created globally, so if one part of the file path changes (in your case, renaming the parent folder), it's considered a different path altogether.
I figured out that it must have to do with main stage. I don't have main stage so I just skipped that folder and I am about to see if it all works properly
Hey, I have a macbook pro 2015 128gb been trying multiple ways over the past couple hours, would be very appreciated if anyone could tell me if moving logic and logic sounds to an external drive. I bought one hoping I could do this, but if anyone knows it would be very appreciated many thanks ;D
As powerful as Terminal for so many things, it seems to me using Symlinker to generate the aliases is the way to go. That is if you want to do it several times faster and more accuratly. Nonetheless, thank you for the video!
MAN THIS IS SO GOOD AN THOROUGH ! Maybe if you do another one, like maybe take a valium or Xanax, then shoot the video. Great insight, direct instructions and well done. Im trying to slow down the video or your talking through logic right now. Not being a smartass, you are moving at break neck speed. I should keep up right? I agree and thanks again. Im sick of running everything off of one hard drive which is stupid I know but moving libraries now. Take care and thanks again!
HAHA. Thanks man I was messing with ya. Takes a smart guy like you to show a dumbass like me how to do something on the old computer. Im still having. problem figuring it ut Peter. Do I even need symbolic linker or any of that crap? I run Logic Pro x and Komplete 8, Superior Drummer, etc. I would love to learn how to do this right. Thanks again Peter. Happy Holidays man
Yea, that's the whole point of the tutorial. A symbolic linker tricks Logic into thinking that the music libraries are on your local disk, which allows you to put them on an external hard drive and free up storage on your computer's disk.
Ok Thank you Peter because when I used symbolic linker and did precisely what they said every time I opened Logic it would start downloading the loops again and it turned into a mess. Obviously this way it won't right? I am tackling it tonight . haha. Thanks again Peter! Hey one more thing bro, I have superior drummer and Native instruments Komplete 8 is this the way I should do it for those libraries as well? Thank you!
I really have to write code to do this shit, why the fuck is this so hard. Did the creators of Logic Pro not fucking realize that most people aren't gonna have enough storage for all the fucking plugins. I'm so pissed.
Yea it's frustrating. The majority of use cases are people who have desktop Macs with 1TB+ of local storage (I assume), hence why they couldn't justify prioritizing this feature over, say, adding Alchemy plugins or fixing bugs. I think it'd be a great feature to have too, but in the meantime this is what we gotta do.
Great tutorial. Thank you .... but you speak so fast I actually wondered if the audio was speeded up. I live in a parallel slow mo' dimension ...... the Oldguyverse.
Oops! I'm still working on getting a good speed in my videos -- something not too fast, or too slow. Here was... a bit fast! You can slow down the video by clicking the gear icon in the player, selecting Speed, and then 0.5x or 0.75x for the time being.
Did you ever watch this video yourself? See what you type? You do know it is possible to magnify? You try to talk as fast as you can to make it as hard as possible to watch.
Sorry about the speed! As I've said before, it's something I'm working to improve on. In no way am I intentionally trying to make it difficult. Here, it was a combination of nerves and trying to get as much information as possible out and I overstepped that a bit. As for the typing, do you mean when I misspell things? I touch type, so I don't look at my keyboard while I type. Unfortunately, I don't have much practice typing and *talking* at the same time, hence the misspellings from time to time. Finally, what do you mean "magnify"? Like zoom in so the text is clearer in the video?
Yeah, I think the general nerves is a factor. Typing, I mean, magnify windows for readability. If you didn't know it, you would have to be able to read from the screen. So, thanks for videos.
Are they AU or VST? Make sure they're installed in the correct place. AU goes in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components VST goes in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST
Hey Peter I was having a similar issue where only the 3rd party plugins aren't being recognized, but they're in the correct folder and I made the symlink on the Plug-ins folder. Any ideas why it seems they're being treated differently. Any help is appreciated!
I try it from 2 weeks ago now, and I just seen your video and it's all done ! Thank's a lot !
Wow... this works... thanks a lot ! this is a powerful technique that I am sure will be useful in many applications, not only Logic Pro

+Lyle W did you install Logic completely? Does it run as-is?
I just installed it from the apple store and then downloaded all the content so its just above 40gb of data.. Is that correct? yeh it runs fine
I did everything you said and the additional packages are not going to the HDD. I have no problems running logic though
However, the root directory is only accessible by the system administrator.
thanks for this video, i had this all set up before but accidentally messed it up after restoring my laptop 👍
it keeps stopping transferring the files to my hdd and gives me (error code -36)
Try this: osxdaily.com/2015/02/21/fix-error-code-36-finder-mac-os-x/
It didn't work for me. the Logic folder from application support doesn't exist in my system & the Apple Loops Index. when I opened Logic I got asked to download the essential sound library! :(
Did you install Logic and all of its libraries on your main local disk first before trying to symlink it over?
No, I didn't install every library package before the symlink, I just tried a diff method and I solved solution then. Thanks anyway!
No problem, glad to hear everything worked out!
SO WHAT THE DID YOU DO TO CORRECT IT???
hey, I actually found someone who explained it on apple discussions. I'll put the link below :)
discussions.apple.com/thread/7439835
So I did this and it works great, but I need to rename the parent folder that the additional content is in on my external hard drive. Can I do this? Or will I have to remake the symlinks folders after I've renamed it?
Btw, I downloaded even more additional content straight to my external hd after setting up the symlinks. Worked flawlessly. thanks!
I think you'll have to remake the symlink, as
~/Cool/somefolder/anotherone
isn't the same as
~/Cool/otherfolder/anotherone
If the symlink was created within the same parent folder, however, it would work, but these symlinks are being created globally, so if one part of the file path changes (in your case, renaming the parent folder), it's considered a different path altogether.
Very clear; thanks!
Hey! does this video work for Logic Pro x?
Yes -- I'm running Logic Pro X in the video.
Thank you! I appreciate the response!
I figured out that it must have to do with main stage. I don't have main stage so I just skipped that folder and I am about to see if it all works properly
Hey,
I have a macbook pro 2015 128gb been trying multiple ways over the past couple hours, would be very appreciated if anyone could tell me if moving logic and logic sounds to an external drive. I bought one hoping I could do this, but if anyone knows it would be very appreciated
many thanks ;D
Absolute star...thank you :)
Very helpful. Thank you!
Helpful video!
I don't have "Audio Music Apps /Library/Audio/ " is this normal?
I am positive i didn't delete it.
I found a folder named Audio Music Apps in my 'Music' folder. I'm gonna try to copy that to my external hard drive and check if it works.
thanks man!
You're the fuckin man. Learned so much about OSX system functions as well as running Logic off HDD. haha
+Daniel Yay learning! And OS X has a lot of tricks up its sleeve.
If anyone needs to slow down the playback a bit, use the UA-cam Settings (lower right; the gear labeled HD) and set Speed to 0.75.
Thank you, helped me
As powerful as Terminal for so many things, it seems to me using Symlinker to generate the aliases is the way to go. That is if you want to do it several times faster and more accuratly.
Nonetheless, thank you for the video!
After i move the files to the external HDD is it ok to erase the original folder after the symlink has been set up ?
If you've moved the files, then they're already off of your internal drive. If you've copied, then yes, it's ok to remove the originals.
Good work
Thank you, good sir/madam
MAN THIS IS SO GOOD AN THOROUGH ! Maybe if you do another one, like maybe take a valium or Xanax, then shoot the video. Great insight, direct instructions and well done. Im trying to slow down the video or your talking through logic right now. Not being a smartass, you are moving at break neck speed. I should keep up right? I agree and thanks again. Im sick of running everything off of one hard drive which is stupid I know but moving libraries now. Take care and thanks again!
Haha, thanks! I'll definitely slow down next time! Glad the video was helpful!
Thank you!
It should work the same for any library, as the libraries store their data in the same places for Logic.
Seabud, Check out a much simpler way to do this process and a video that is of better quality.
ua-cam.com/video/_G9IEc1vZ1w/v-deo.html
thanks en keep up
And I thought I talked fast....
Too fast....
My 3rd party plugins aren't working nor showing up in "AU Instruments" after doing this. Please Help!
Are they AU or VST?
Make sure they're installed in the correct place.
AU goes in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components
VST goes in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST
Hey Peter I was having a similar issue where only the 3rd party plugins aren't being recognized, but they're in the correct folder and I made the symlink on the Plug-ins folder. Any ideas why it seems they're being treated differently. Any help is appreciated!
