- In this episode I put nitro laquer on top of a poly finish guitar. I then try to crack the nitro laquer with a freezer.
Let’s find out how it works out!
Enjoy!

Yes sir. I have used nitro over poly many many times. Even clear nitro over color poly and then cracking using compressed cold air and a heat gun .Now poly over nitro is. Well let's just say it looked good for a minute. Lol.
Yeah, I can imagin! 🤣 I’ve never done this before but I’m very pleased with the result.
And dulling the poly on the neck, OMG, that was an eye opener! The neck feels all natural, like an oiled in piece wood.
@@TheworldofMattias unfortunately, the dulling of the neck won't last. Your hand will buff it back to a shine. The body checking turned out amazing.
For a minute??? Did the clear nitro over the poly work for you? That would be even easier.
@@m.k.ultrasonic I read the "for a minute" statement as reference to putting poly over nitro, which....you don't wanna do that, and i reckon that's why it only lasted "a minute".
Glad your using Nitro Lack it look's great
Thanks man!
Yes Yes I want that guitar. Looks great man. I've put Amber Nitro over my Tele's neck, now I am gonna do the body. Oh my dear God, not another project. Very very nice job.Thanx for the video.
Thats great man, good luck! :)
Great looking guitar! Nice job.
Thanks man!
Man, that was crazy helpful! I have a white Bullet Strat with some mystery cracks in the poly finish. I thought they might look better if I checked the rest of the surface. I didn't want to have to take all the finish off and start over, like in EVERY OTHER VIDEO on the subject. And if that wasn't enough, that Daphne Blue really works for me. I never would have even thought of that as an option, but it's perfect. I'm glad I found your video.
I’m glad I helped you and thank you for telling me! Good luck with your guitar project!
Look great indeed in the blue great for blues
Agree! I love the 50-60s colors on my fenders. The next project will be fiesta red, don’t miss that! 🤘🎸
You must have a very understanding wife if she lets you paint right over the floor!😄
After a few more projects you’ll have a very interesting painting down there.
Like all good wifes she does not care what I do in my workshop. 😊 And I don’t care about the paint on the floor. I will ware it down just by standing on it. Its not the first paint on the floor! 😂
@@TheworldofMattias Happy wife, happy life.
@@bobmanners8624ive found the opposite to be true. Angry ex wife, happy life
Wow this is awesome, and great to have cheap guitars to do projects like this and if something goes very wrong you did not loose to much money. :D
Yeah, I know and it’s fun to! 😊
Can you do a Epiphone les paul respray in nitrocellulose lacquer, please do finish checking but no extra relicing. Maybe on a Epiphone Les Paul Junior? Or a cheap market place find. Maybe you could do a video Refinish on a Gibson Maestro Les Paul Junior or Sg junior p-90 conversion.
Thats a good idea. I might do that!
Great job Mattias! The tele looks great. Will you dull the the shiny metal parts as well? I think it would complete the look and feel. Great Channel! Keep it up! Thanks
Well I’ thinking on ageing the metal parts. But I kinda like it as it is. But you never know! 😊
It turned out great ☘️
Thanks man!
IT worked! nitro can stick over poly that is sanded. You just did one coat? Like a thin coat and then polished it? you didn't do a clear coat?
I put 4 coats of color and 4 coats of clear. Then wet sanded and then polish. Turned out great I think!
@@TheworldofMattiasyes it did
Have you ever tried lacquer over the Poly on one of The Chibson Acoustics to get a better authentic look ?
I’ve thought about it and I will probably try it. I’m a little worried about putting an acoustic guitar in the freezer. If I do, I will make a video about it. 🎸🤘
Did the nitro start to chip/wear down, showing the color underneath it? Please share a photo or video if yes!
Hi, no it does not chip of. it´s really on there.
@@TheworldofMattias what about wear from the pick and forearm or just smashing it’s corners accidentally, would this slowly become a two tone relic like the ones we see and like on the web?
Hi, yes, I suspect that it will. It all depends on how you treat it. The nitro is strong though so the relicing will take time.
What was your sanding process that you did before putting the nitro on ? What grain ? Any wet sanding ? And what was the sanding process once you had it on up to the buffing point
I just dulled the suface with a soft sanding block, 240 grit I think it was. No wet sanding before paint. I wet sanded between paint and clear, and also after clear. I used 2000, 2500 and 7000 wet sanding paper. I buffed it with Sonax cut max, rubbing and finally polish. Hope that helps! 🎸🤘
This bigsby is original? How the tune goes.
?
No, it is a 20usd china version. But it holds tune with no probs!
Another great video. I love the Tele stuff! Your channel deserves to explode. Keep up the good work.
PS: Ever thought about making your own business out of this? Similar to Scar My Guitar.
Thanks man! You’re too kind!
Maybe I’ll take on customers in the future. We will see. It could create some interesting content to the channel. 😊
Thanks again man!
I’m using varathane water based poly, can I apply nitro lacquer or any other lacquer over the poly?
Well, I’m not an expert on all types of lacquers. But the rule is, nitro over poly=ok, poly over nitro=not ok!
Thank you for your reply!
How is the finish holding up?
Hi, I never had any issues with it. Still going strong!
I'm about to do the exact same thing! How many coats of Daphne blue did you put on, and did you clear coat it?
I put three coats of paint and about ten coats of clear. If you are going to crack you need s thick layer of clear. Good luck man!
Very cool! The fine cracks look great. How many coats of each component (primer, colour, clear) did you use and what sheen clear did you use (satin, high gloss, etc)? If you were doing it again would you time it the same way again (cure the finish for 2 days before freezing, and one night in the freezer)?
Hi! I usually do 1 primer coat and three ore more coats of each. Let it cure for two days and put it in the freezer over night. That should give you the same effect as mine. Good luck!
Matteus, are you able to buff the nitro finish to a mirror shine ? (Before the freezer and cracking) or is there always some level of lines when doing rattle can lacquer / painting ?
You can get it to a mirror shine. You need patience and a whole lotta sandpaper. The sanding is the key, not the buffing. Put on, maybe, 20 layers of clear and sand down every fifth time and you’ll get a nice thick finish that you can buff to the shine you want!
I’ll admit that I cut some corners but you can do it better than me! Good luck!
Looks great ❤
To jump in here ...
Yes, you can get it to a factory like mirror shine, but as he mentioned, you need to wet sand through several various grades, usually from 800 to 2000
You'll need to do that BEFORE buffing.
Although he mentioned sanding between every 5th clear coat, I never sand between clear coats at all.
Nitro is very forgiving and melts into the previous coat making sanding unnecessary in my experience....unless perhaps you have a run or drip, or excess buildup in a particular area.
After wet sanding, I like to use a set of 3M micro mesh pads to finish it out
It will take away all swirl, fine surface scratches etc, and look like a factory finish.
They arent cheap but they are SUPERB for finishing jobs and I count on them!
With the micro mesh pads you can literally polish bare wood to an almost glass finish
Forgive me if I missed it, but where did you get it? If I may ask?
At least it's string through the body!
I got the guitar from AliExpress, there should be an unboxing video on my channel. And the laquer brand is Nitor
Is that a one piece Maple neck? Or Maple with a Maple fretboard? I see a lot of the Chinese Fenders don't have a one piece neck, unless you order it that way. Which is kinda silly, as a one piece Maple neck is kinda what Fender, is known for. But lookin' good! One of my favorite colors.
Thanks man! It is a maple neck with a maple fretboard and a skunk stripe 🤷♂️😂
Just like in the Fender factory.
@@bruceman9581 really?
The way the fretboard extends, looks like a cap to me.
I think you are right!
Mattias String alignment appears off DO NOT CUT pickguard until you attach neck first. The neck pickup will not be centered under the strings. You need to re align pickguard. Bridge pickup appears fine.
Close enough for tele neck pick no pole screws
Thanks for the tip! However, I never changed anything on the guitar, so its on there just as it was before I repainted it. The PG was to narrow so I had to adjust. But that did nothing to the alignment.
Thanks for watching and commenting! 🎸🤘
It worked fine! 😊
Canned Electronics duster, freezer and use upside down and itll dispense a very cold liquid that shouldnt react with nitro
That’s right! I prefer the freezer though. It yields a better over all result. The heatgun/ canned air is good but only do small areas at once.
👍🏻👍🏻
🎸🤘🙏
Lots of overspray on the floor
Man, it’s a workshop.
Yeah, it don’t bother me, it will soon be gone. 😊🤘
Fender put nitro over poly for decades
👍👍🎸
No this is pointless and stupid. Nitro needs to chemically bond to a a surface and poly relies on mechanical bonding. It’s as stupid as spray painting in a non ventilated area. Everything he did will flake off
Well, we will just have to wait and see? I’m with you on the ventilation, I don’t spray in that room anymore, and I got a mask.
