Fuck yeah. I don't know how I'd rank the rest, but Aspera hiems symfonia and the sham mirrors are at the top of the list for me... I. Fact, Aspera was the album that introduced me to black metal.. Worth mentioning, Ulvers Bergtatt is also a goddamn masterpiece from the same time period.
Surprised no one mentioned Voices as something completely different and well executed by Borknagar. Such a unique track. Winter Thrice takes the cake for me. Love everything from this band.
1 - Winter Thrice 2 - URD 3 - Quintessence 4 - The Archaic Course 5 - True North 6 - Universal 7 - Empiricism 8 - Epic 9 - The Olden Domain 10 - Origin 11 - Borknagar (Self Titled) And here's my top 10 songs 1 - Up North 2 - Colossus 3 - Ad Noctum 4 - The Winter Eclipse 5 - The Rhymes of the Mountain 6 - The Genuine Pulse 7 - The Presence Is Ominous 8 - Oceans Rise 9 - Lights 10 - Fleshflower I really love this band thanks to Nick & Pete 🤘🏼
True North came into my life and i immediately loved it. But i never went back in their discography. Thanks for this ranking. I'm using Pete's tip and just working my way back.
Where the pine trees meet the sea Where the stormy sky will sing for me The place I wanna be Up north 1. True North 2. Quintissence 3. Empiricism 4. Winter Thrice 5. Archaic Course 6. Origin
11. Origin (still enjoy it, its just its stripped down acoustics without the heaviness and its pretty short) 10. Borknagar (not quite there yet and its more black metal than all their other stuff. Absolutely love Dauden. 10 songs 5 are instrumental) 9. True North (only album i haven't got yet. Its still new to me and needs more listens.) 8. Winter Thrice (great album i just dont listen to it as much as Urd) 7. Urd (really happy to see ICS Vortex back ) 6. Epic (i actually was disappointed in this album when it came out. It grew on me over the years) 5. Universal (took long enough for them to make a comeback with the heaviness. One of my favorite album covers) 4. Archaic Course (top 4 are always the same for me since Empiricism came out.) 3. Empiricism (been a fan of Vintersorg since his solo ep and was shocked when he joined Borknagar) 2. The Olden Domain (this and number 1 were my first 2 albums i got of Borknagar so its nostalgia that gets it ranked high) 1. Quintessence (Easily my favorite album. Colossus best song. Got this when it came out so its very nostalgic. My favorite lineup and i was such a nut i carved their logo inward (mirrored) or whatever on a rubber ink pad and pressed it on a bunch of colored paper in art class in highscool back in 2000. It was very impressive stuff)
1. Olden Domain 2. Borknagar 3. URD Past that I can’t decide. I know I like Origin a lot more than other people, I can say that much. Really just a crazy consistent band
I saw Borknagar on that Emperor tour. Magical , I don’t really give a fuck about Emperor compared to Borknagar and I was transfixed with them. Emperor was solid though. They all wore white shirts if I remember correctly.
When Pete and Nick did the video at Rock Fantasy for the top albums of 2019, I hadn't heard of Borknagar. I fell in love with True North and worked my way backwards through their catalog. I'm not immersed enough to rank them all, but Winter Thrice, Quintessence and True North are my faves. Great video! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Pete and Nick probably know this, but Oystein and Vintersorg also do Cronian together. Borknagar is Oystein's vision, tempered by Lazare's wacky ideas, and with some influence by the vocalists. Cronian is like Vintersorg-era Borknagar, without any of Lazare's input. There's three Cronian abums, for those who want more music that isn't that different from what Borknagar do.
I remember reading some review that claimed that "The Archaic Course is a black metal album for people who don't like black metal". I would put it differently and as a complement: it's a great gateway album for people who don't listen to black metal but want to get into it. It was one of my first black metal albums as well!
Played this on shuffle, then listened to Winter Thrice and LOVED it! Id love to see a conversation with Nick and Ryan on the history of dirty vocals. I'm not a huge fan, and I think the context fron those who are could be helpful
For me, i have to go with the first album. I'm just more of a black metal guy. Second album is cool, but I hate Garms clean singing. For newer stuff, i thought Winter Thrice was pretty cool, but couldn't get into True North.
With "Fall" coming out (which might be the best album they've ever done) I am going up and down their discography and boy I've been sleeping on this band.
I need to explore this band. I just picked up White Void- Anti and really liked it so picked up the vinyl. Saw one of the members is from Borknagar (Lars on vocals).
The Presence Is Ominous is my favorite song by this band. Such a strange song. I fell in love with it the moment I heard it. Empiricism is my favorite album. It seems to have the most consistently strong songs.
Cool episode not a huge fan of the band but need to dig deeper and it was cool to see your thoughts. Also, cool vader shirt pete! Is there a ranking the studio albums of vader on the cards? 😉
wow great Rancking of BORKNAGAR ! Just wanted to say I purchased "True North" and "Epic" thanks to this episode. Plus "Cosmic Genesis" by Vintersorg. Awesome across the board. Thank you!
Thank you for this show! Borknagar is an incredible band, always have been. But guys, you gotta check out the debut album from Iotunn. It is called Access All Worlds and it KILLS!
Fascinating show, guys, so thanks. Sounds like a start with Nick's top pick and see what happens from there. Great to see you back, Nick. And thanks to you and Pete for the show.
@@dmk7700 If you don't even like *most of the bands* that are reviewed on this channel, then why would it surprise you that Pete doesn't like *one band* that you happen to like?
In general, I'm not the biggest fan of black metal, but there are some bands that I like in the (sub)genre, as is the case with *almost any* kind of metal. Even if I didn't care for it at all, I wouldn't say that it should be "deleted.". People should at least have the choice to listen to it or not. I wouldn't ever want my musical tastes to dictate what is *available* musically.
Good to see Nick again👍
We need an episode ranking the albums of Arcturus, who is with me?

I've been a black metal fan for over 6 years and I had never heard of this band before, thanks guys
It's incredible how much new music I've found due to SoT
If you happen to use Spotify, there's a playlist called Black & Dark Metal where they put all this kind of music. It's where i found Borknagar.

There should be a Black Metal 90s special, there are so many great bands from that time who are amazing.
Underrated band one of the best BM ever out of Norway.
Found out about these guys from this channel. Thanks Pete and Nick
Yes! I've been waiting for this list since I discovered Pete's channel! Now I'm holding my fingers crossed for a Solitude Aeturnus list.
I have the same shirt Nick. They were amazing at MDF. I watched from right behind the sound board.
I always go back to The Olden Domain as my #1, with Ivar's keyboards. RIP Grim. Great discussion here. Thanks, guys.
Great record. 1997 saw a ton of fantastic releases.
I love Borknagar!! Instalike
Empiricism is 10/10 classic BM.
Rank the Burzum albums
The Archaic Course is a masterpiece, the album that got me into Black Metal.

Yes, I just came across White Void via Spotify a few weeks ago - and then, immediately ordered the Anti album. My #1 of 2021, so far!
Hi Nick! I was waiting for this great band that Nick introduced me to.
Always Loved Borknagar!!
Colossus, yep have to agree that one is great!
Self titled still has the most testicular fortitude by far...as do the Garm albums....
The Presence Is Ominous is my favorite song by this band. Such a strange song. I fell in love with it the moment I heard it. Empiricism is my favorite album. It seems to have the most consistently strong songs.
Flawless discography. I’d rank their latest, True North, as their best, followed by the Olden Domain.
Cool episode not a huge fan of the band but need to dig deeper and it was cool to see your thoughts. Also, cool vader shirt pete! Is there a ranking the studio albums of vader on the cards? 😉
Their first two are their best....most everything else is good though.
I need to listen to them more, but for me "Urd" and "True North" really stand out.
Still waiting for an episode on Windir, just saying.
What band's logo is on Nick's Hat?

I’ve loved this band for years. I was turned on to them by James Bickers in one of his columns.
Got the first two albums on original lp vinyl. They are great. Lost interest after that.
How about ranking the albums Agalloch?
What do you think about assaf avidan?
True North tops the list for me. Love that album🤘🏻
Pete, another one is scheduled for this year, in May.
