Gylfie & Dryer
Barn owls Gylfie & Dryer are now in their second season together and have chosen to bring their new family up in my Ash Stump nest box.
Ash Stump
This nest box used to be a favourite of the kestrels, Mr & Mrs Kes, but last year Gylfie and Dryer did attempt a very late brood here. Sadly the eggs didn't hatch, but now they've chosen the box again.

Barn owls normally lay every other day so keep your eye on my live nest cams for a second egg tomorrow.

I miss barn owls. There used to be a nest in just about every tobacco and hay barn around here when I was a kid then something happened and they all just disappeared.
I see way more other types of owls and raptors now than back then though which makes the barn owls disappearance confusing to me.

My goose just got up from its nest and stomped on its 1 and only egg.... can't say I'm not thrilled to not have more of them... if you don't know, they scream at literally everything. With geese peace was never an option.

Yeah, went broody ( I can’t spell)
So I know barn owls prefer to nest out in the country more, but what about in residential areas, like around Leeds? We're moving to Leeds on the 8th (little one and I, he's obsessed with these barn owl cams, my husband is already there getting things ready for us) and would love to set up a barn owl box in the back garden, if it could help? If not that then perhaps recommendations for a nesting box of a species in need of the help?? I know we can't choose who ensts in these boxes and such but...would love to try.
Unless you have a lot of voles running round a (big) garden or very nearby, it won't work with barn owls. And people activity will keep them away anyway in the suburbs. Try something for robins and tits?
@@freespirit6209 Considering I've seen successful barn owl nest boxes in the suburbs over in California....a small quiet neighborhood in Leeds should be fine.
