  • It's fairly common for there to be games on your shelf that just don't get played as much as they should, even when they're games that you love and enjoy playing. Today, I'm looking at 6 games on my shelf that are criminally underplayed, despite having a great time every session I do play them.
What are your underplayed games in your collection? Games you've played before, enjoyed, but now don't play nearly enough. And what prevents them from getting to the table?

I guess the games that stayed in the box for too long are my old classic games, Monopoly, Trivial pursuit, etc.. With the new games I got I'm playing as much as I can when possible.

Games are so dependent on the people you play games with, I really want people to have a good time, and the people I play with mostly don’t like complex games with fiddly rules. All my medium to heavy games are mostly solo experiences for me. So getting those played depends on how much time and energy I have. I’ve made a point of pulling out some games I don’t know well, and trying play them more regularly so there is less of a barrier to playing through them. Recently I’ve replayed Aquatica, Concordia, Grand Austria Hotel, and Maracaibo. When I had fewer games I played them more, and got to know the rules really well. For me, slowing down my purchase of new games will help me play the games I already own.

I bought a bunch of easy games to play so it should be the biggest part of my collection. My plan is to try to lure people playing simpler games with me so then I can eventually plan complex games with them. :)

You should definitely check out Whistle Mountain. It has no similarity at all to Whistle stop except that they both use whistles as a wild resource. Whistle mountain has you building machines on scaffolding that you'll use as action spots. As you build higher and higher up the viaduct, the water level below will rise with it, washing away you machine on the lower levels and any worker meeples you have there. An engine building game with amazing components and upgrade. A really cool game that could easily live alongside Whistle Stop. Some prefer Whistle Mountain to Whistle Stop, but I like them both because of how different they are.

Great video, loved it. Whistle Stop was a game that I didn’t know about and interested me, thanks for that too. My favourites games that don’t go to the table as often as they should are “RuneBound 2nd edition”, “Mage Knight” and “Gaia Project”. All of them most because of the time of play, but I take a blast when playing them, even solo mode. Another that with the pandemic stayed more time in the shelve is “Battlelore 2nd edition”, this one because I used to play with some friends that really enjoy it, and it’s better with the right oponente.
Hope to see you in more of theses videos, loved the theme. All the best and good games.

I think there a three major things against Ghost Stories:
    1) It's just simply older. Go back to content around 2015 and EVERYBODY talked about this one for a while. It's definitely just kind of part of the fabric of the community at this point.
    2) It's been rethemed and re-released as Last Bastion.
    3) It's so stinking hard that many people just don't like interacting with it extensively unless you're a Dark Souls player.
As for underplayed games that I own and have played:
    1) Black Angel. I've played a ton of it solo, but only once or twice with others. There's a longer story there, but I definitely would like to play it multiplayer more.
    2) Chinatown. It's just pure negotiation and area control but man is it an excellent experience. Definitely need to play it more.
    3) Cyclades. I've only gotten it played the once but it was also incredible and I've gone out of my way to track down both Hades and Titans to play it more.

    • @realdruidcitygames

Everyone feels that way after the first play. You will want to play the long game which you can find by flipping over the Citadel board. It give a “pre-round”. The economies in the game become bloated with a full 5th round and the game loses it tension. TB is a game of “get gud”, the more you play, the more you see the synergies emerging and the dice economy really shine to score high output.

Ghost Stories is an amazing game. Still one of the best co-ops ever designed, in my opinion. It has a great amount of meaningful variety and a perfect game arc in terms of how the challenge steadily ramps up until the final, climactic couple of turns. A masterpiece. Samurai Spirit is a pretty great spiritual successor to it and is worth checking out as well.

As for me, I can totally agree on hero realms (or star realms) and photosynthesis. Both great games, so I don't really know why they don't hit the table more. I also find Arkham Horror LCG to be a game I love, but rarely play. As well as the grizzled. That game is so good, but yet I never seem to play it.

What seems to happen more and more is when you go to a game night or day people, myself included, are bringing huge backpacks of games. Add to this that people are buying expensive games it seems weekly. So between all the games being brought to a game day and all the money people have spent on some of these games, it is almost show and tell, you fight to get you game to the table, they get played once or twice and time for the next game. So, many good games, especially games that are older than two months, do not get the table time they deserve. I think maybe with the supply chain and shipping issues, as some of these new KS games slow down a bit, maybe we can all spend more time with the many good games we have that are underplayed.

I bought the base game of Marvel Legendary at a Barnes & Noble on a whim a few years ago. Played it with my family that same night. This was the first game in my personal collection as well btw-my INTRODUCTION into non-mainstream board games! I thought the deck-building mechanic was so clever and I had never seen that done before. I fell in love, to the point where I bought nearly all the expansions, I sleeved all the cards, organized everything with a label-maker, etc. It’s been sitting, collecting dust ever since. My family is obsessed with Wingspan now and my friends never show too much interest in playing it…

@@AllYouCanBoard it's a fantastic deck building game, my favorite deck building game. The theme is strong and holds up well, but you don't actually feel like you are playing as one superhero like you do in Marvel Champions. You end up with a mix of hero cards in your deck which, to me, makes it feel like I have a team of heroes that I'm using and pulling off giant turns and combos just feels so dang good. Great topic!
I expect that both Ghost Stories and Hero Realms will leave my collection at some point, but I have content for both of them that I haven’t played, so I want to check that out before I cull them. Not that they are bad games, by any means. I just prefer Star Realms to Hero Realms (and have a bunch of unplayed content for it, too), and don’t need both. Ghost Stories is such a well-designed game, and I always like the idea of these survival co-op games because I can play them solo-but then when I do, I almost always find I like the idea of it more than the execution. But how can I give it up before I try White Moon and Black Secrets??? 😂

I hear you on that one! I culled that a couple years ago because it wasn't getting to the table enough with other worker placement games in the mix.

I got rid of it because we play it online now and enjoy it there enough that it won't see the table again (given how many games we'd prioritize over it).

If you’d cull all of these you won’t find yourself missing them at all, trust me.

Hey, impulsive collectors and board-gamers! Stop this crazy perverse loop (marvel, purchase, disappointment) by playing my refined, fluid, and coherent boardgames eg. Blood Rage Quintessential. It's yours for free in the Blood Rage files section of BGG. Yet, be quick, since I'm considering a re-theme in a big golden box so I can sell and make a living from it - passion doesn't make a living these days.
