"While Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) recently called requiring automatic refunds for canceled flights a “dumb idea,” his fellow senators disagree. Lawmakers are moving to strengthen their aviation reauthorization bill after Cruz and three other lawmakers were slammed for attempting to undermine President Joe Biden’s new airline regulations.
Last week, The Lever reported that Cruz, Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.), and Rep. Rick Larsen (D-Wash.) - who have all been bankrolled by the airline industry - introduced a new Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization deal that would require customers to send a “written or electronic request” in order to receive a full refund for a canceled or significantly delayed flight.
The provision received backlash, as it would undercut the Biden administration’s promise to streamline the refund process for airline customers - which has become a bigger problem for consumers as airlines have routinely sold tickets on flights they do not have the capacity to operate. "

Anyone who has tried to get a live person in customer service, knows the frustration and sometimes impossibility, of getting any help. You can't punch numbers on the phone and get your issue resolved. This is a ridiculous opposition to a problem being resolved at the same time a problem pops up. Shame on these "representatives of the people?"

Automatic refunds from Airlines have been the status quo in Europe for about 30 years
I’ve had to do this on canceled flights and rather than wait 18 hours had to switch airlines then take about a month until I got flight refunded. That’s ridiculous

Recently, I had to cancel a flight eight days before. AT first, I was told a $25fee would be imposed. Then, that I would get 80 % back. Finally, I was told that under 50% would be returned. I thought to swallow it each time, as I had another more complicated trip to plan. Then, I decided to complain to Visa, my credit card. I had the total back in under 7 days.
Why should the onus on the customer for airlines refunding customers their money for cancelled flights?

I'm still paying AT&T for a phone that died 9/20/23. My account is locked and they insisted I enter my 4 digit code which I don't have. They would text my code to my dead phone or I could drive a 150 mi trip to nearest store to get the code. For my security they said, wanted to make sure I was me. I'm still auto-paying for a POS dead phone. I loath AT&T

In Canada, if a flight is significantly delayed, the Airlines are required to give a refund, provided it is requested. Most people either don't know this, or don't bother to ask

If missing my flight means I miss the other things I have booked, booking a new flight is ZERO help. Maybe Cruz can just book another hotel reservation, or plan a different Cancun trip, but normal people are limited on our vacation time to when coworkers aren't booked off.

In some cases when the Airline refunds your money, you lose the discount you got for buying the ticket in advance. They refund your money at the gate and your $500 flight becomes an $800 flight because you want to get on the next flight out and they treat you like you just walked in off the street to buy a ticket. There should be consequences to the airline for not getting you to your destination when then said you would be there.
Not to defend the anti-coupon faction here, but working at Sonic we get people who want to abuse the use of coupons bad. I am not lying when I say that one person, after placing their order and not saying anything about coupons, showed me an old receipt with what she claimed to be a coupon code for a free drink scribbled on it because the original ink faded, dated from before I even started working for the company - maybe like 3 or 4 years old - and expected us to deduct the cost of a drink from an already processed bill. And I’m like… Why would you wait so long to use a code like that? We technically don’t even use that system of discounts anymore because the company changed the policy a couple years ago, but I think we were forced to honor it anyway. The point of the story is that while I agree that getting automatic refunds for missed flights would be awesome, I don’t think the whole coupon non-expiration thing is a fair analogy. There should be limits to how long a coupon should be valid if for no other reason than to avoid passing into the realm of ridiculousness. Honestly, coupons were never allowed to expire, I can pretty much guarantee that there would be some old person walking into a Walgreens with a coupon dating back from the 50s or something expecting to get a free cherry soda from the soda fountain, which obviously they don’t even use anymore. And yes, I’m exaggerating somewhat, but I think my point is still valid
A tip…
If you’re caught in this situation, and used a credit card, approach your bank and seek to reverse the charge on the basis that the service wasn’t delivered.
Most credit card companies are obliged to refund you, and then chase their money directly through the vendor (or the bank that facilitates them).
This was an unrecognised reality that accelerated bank collapses during the late 2000’s calamity…

Hey Teddy--if you missed the wedding or funeral or whatever it is you booked a flight for--THEN NO. You don't want/need to rebook. The reason for the flight is gone. DUH.
Just put a REFUND & CREDIT button in the account. Leave it up to the consumer to decide if they want a refund for "services not rendered" or want to "bank the money" for a future purchase. Why is this an issue? What a waste of tax payer money!
In a way it does make sense accounting-wise. If you can’t zero out the “expired” certificates, you have to carry them on your ledger. If a company had billions on their ledger that they couldn’t spend or even, technically, invest? End of the world. Instead of absorbing that money, corporate entities should have to give it to legitimate, investigated, and approved charities. Maybe we could choose the charity at time of purchase, “just in case there’s a significant delay or cancellation.”
I think you misunderstand. The airlines DO want these hoops, and the unrefunded money, because they keep the money in interest bearing accounts.
And earn interest on YOUR MONEY.
Try to wrap your head around this. If the money (for the services they DID NOT provide) were automatically refunded THERE WOULD BE NO "EXPIRED" CERTIFICATES.

For a business to be able to accept credit card payments, they need a bank sponsor.
That bank says “this is a reputable business, and if they don’t deliver your product, we will refund you”.
If things turn to custard, the bank liquidates the company’s assets, and life goes on…
But if all your assets are unfulfilled contracts, the bank’s got nada…
As airlines went to the wall, the banks copped billions of losses, refunding consumers costs they could never retrieve…
