Republican state Rep. Jess Edwards said last week that a bill banning marriage for people under 18 would make abortion more appealing for young people.
"If we continually restrict the freedom of marriage as a legitimate social option, when we do this to people who are of a ripe, fertile age and may have a pregnancy and a baby involved, are we not in fact making abortion a much more desirable alternative, when marriage might be the right solution for some freedom-loving couples?" he said, in a video posted on X."

Several states have *no minimum age for children to marry* as long as the parents approve. The court still has to approve such marriages, but it requires only one judge to grant permission, and we know there are "conservative" judges that will absolutely approve of child marriage.
In California, you must be 18 to get a divorce. But there is no minimum age to get married, as long as a parent or guardian consent and a court gives permission. California is among just seven states, including New Mexico and Oklahoma, that does not have a minimum age for marriage.
I know that sounds unbelievable, so feel free to fact check this. I was shocked to learn this myself.

Its worth noting, as a matter of fact, that only 12 states in the US have the age of consent at 18, and for some reason we have one (I wouldnt be surprised if there were more) that allows marriage at 12 with parent permission, but this age is only for girls while boys have to be at least 14, yet its age of consent is 16. ..and that just boggles the mind.

A weird thing about this is, one of the biggest reasons why people get abortions is lack of income, not lack of a marriage. I’m married and got one even though I would have loved to keep it because no matte4 how many hours my husband works he can’t support us and if I had another baby I couldn’t work. 50 hour weeks gets us rent, electric, gas and phone. That’s it. A lot of the time not even that and That’s as much overtime as the company will pay.
If you care about people getting abortions, instead of banning it, which will cause a rise in infant mortality and that’d worse than any abortion, or letting kids get married, rise the minimum wage. It’s 7.25 here. It hasn’t changed since 2006. Almost 2 decades ago. Invest in education for people, force places to pay whatever is livable in the area at least. That’s why people work, to make money to live and if they work full time they should have the basics.
There will still be abortions but not nearly as many. You’d be surprised how many women chose that option because they already can’t afford their basic life. Can’t add more to the load.
