I crawled under my truck to find my leak detection pump just hanging there. Now it looked like it was intact but I moved it around and saw it wasn't. The hose you're talking about was closed, but now you got me wanting to check it again lol
@@thewiz8073 I went back and checked, everything was good. I tried to remove the pump again, but it didn’t wanna twist counter clockwise. Either way, it’s in there good and the check engine light is off and not throwing codes.
If you have a similar problem go to a shop that will perform a smoke test. They put a connector that matches your gas cap and fill the system with smoke. Believe me you will see where the littlest leak is! Ofcourse you should visually check for obvious things first as the smoke test is a final and possibly costly resort
The problem may not go away instantly after repair because the computer will need time to decide that there us no longer a problem. The way around it is to disconnect the battery for 20 mins and then reconnect. If the problem is truly gone the light won't come back on. Do you know if it's had to to reset, or if they disconnected the battery. Just a thought.
I have had the small evap leak code for a little bit. I did the new gas cap from dealer (rip off price) and pulled the battery cable for a few minutes. That removed the cel but on my scanner it still shows as permanent code po456 even though I have cleared codes from my scanner and pulled battery and my cel has not come back on yet. I might be going under to check these two items now
My 2007 is doing this. We have inspections here in my city and I failed because of it. I changed the gas cap and it still came back on. I'm going to look underneath it in the am to see if that cord is unhooked (hopefully the 2007-2017 model is slightly the same under there). One dealership "fixed" the problem and the light came back on so then I took it to Dodge and they said I need a new tank because of the line going to the tank. They said they can't repair the line because the tank and the line is one solid piece, but get this,,,,, that's what the dealership before them worked on. Idk who's lying so I'm trying to figure it out for myself. Thanks for this info.
Definately get another opinion from an independent mechanic. Or maybe even utilize justanswers (I am not affiliated with them in any way) but I have used them on multiple occasions for times like this and they have helped me out and saved me money. Just a suggestion before buying whole new tank. What they are telling you doesn't sound correct to me, but anything is possible.
I had a 2017 not one poem other than that after putting 153,000 miles on it. Just bought a 2021, I'm sure I'll run into this again. Hope it works for you.
2011 ram 1500, I bought the new gas cap, also a emissions thingy, ,Ram gas cap alway had an issue with refueling, like the filler neck wanted to pull away fro the truck, I guess that wore down the clip so it wouldn;t lock the line together, I would get under the truck hook it back together, and disconnect the battery for a few hours, and the code was gone,finally decided to replace the line it self, 15 bucks at the dealer, little clip is prob 50 cents, but the upper portion of line is where they get you...It' called the fuel vapor recirculation line, or as I call it bullshit California smog control...

I am chasing this issue on my 2018 Ram 2500 6.4 hemi as well. I have replaced the gas cap, the purge solenoid in the engine bay, and the leak detection pump that you show in this video. My light remains on and will not go out. Still checking hoses but haven't found any disconnected yet. My truck is just out of warranty at 40,000 miles.
After replacing all those items did you disconnect the battery for 20 mins to reset the light. I've heard others say that the light wouldnt reset on it's own after repairs, but after a 20 minute disconnect it didnt come back on. It's worth a shot.
@@thewiz8073 Yes you bring up a good point. I did eventually pull the battery cable and the codes did go away. I drove the truck for over 250 miles and about 5 days later the stupid gas cap symbol popped back up. Now it's just a matter of time till the CEL comes back on.
Same thing with my 2017 Dodge Ram so I'll be troubleshooting underneath the truck because the dealership wants to charge $300+ without really knowing what thr problem is... they just took a wild guess.

Clip likely came off at dealership or inspection or brake installer...someone did it to get you back in shop to charge you for a easy fix. Setups...I don't trust any of them anymore...gaming us at every chance.
Great video! So I have a 2016 ram 1500 with a po456 code. When I go to start it there is a very high rev then idles down with no fuel smell So I scanned the code with a small scanner from autozone that suggest the canister purge valve im not sure how accurate this is. Before changing it what are the chances that it is the leak detection pump?
It's possible I suppose. It does sound like more of an actual vac leak. Have you check your vac lines? I suppose a bad gas cap could cause this issue as well especially if you are noticing the issue mostly after filling up.

Having the negative battery cable disconnected for 20 minutes will reset the light. If it comes back on in a few days or weeks that wasn't the problem.
Have you replaced your gas cap with a new oem and checked all vapor lines? Also, after changing everything sometimes you need to disconnect your neg battery cable for 20 minutes for the system to reset.
If you disconnect the negative battery cable for 20 minutes it should clear the code. If the code comes back after roughly 50 to 100 miles of driving then that wasn't the issue. If you don't clear the code it will just take time for the computer to realize the issue is no longer and should clear on its own.
Mine did the same....check enginelight came on first...took it to the dealership and they did a free diagnostic on it and got the evap code...I replaced the EMI What he was talking about, but the check engine light didn't go off after riding for a while...and about 2 weeks later, the gas cap light came on....I'm gonna try lubing the gas cap ring then if that doesn't work, I will replace the purge valve that I've seen in other videos.
Ok my truck is doing this but it's starting to stall and stuff when tank gets low but today I filled it up and almost killed my battery starting it did u have this issue with gas cap light
Hey sorry for the delay, I've had some health issues. I did not have any of those issues with my truck. If you havent already, I'd check other simple things like fuel filter, air filter being clogged, fouled plugs, or possibly a failing fuel pump.
Ram 2014 5.7 1500 gas cap light came on this a.m. really hoping its that little clip...cause im not sure where that white sensor is that you showed at the beginning....and whats the worstcase scenario for driving like this today or next few days with the light on..?
The leak detection pump, also known as the EVAP system integrity module (ESIM) is generally located at the rear of the fuel tank on top of the tank. Not sure if this is the correct model for your year but it will look similar to this. www.summitracing.com/parts/MOP-04861962AB. Is it OK to drive? If this is all it is then yes it's probably fine, but I can't really make that determination for you. You can go to Autozone and have them pull the code that is causing the error and then you'll have a better idea of what the actual problem is. But, being a RAM and the gas cap light, it's likely that it's one or the other. Hope this helps.
@@508_Phax You're welcome, keep in mind also it can be something as simple as needing a new gas cap, If you haven't checked that already. I would recommend OEM on the cap, more expensive but worth it in my opinion, but a worn gas cap seal can cause your light to come on as well.

@@508_Phax it's super easy at least on the 2017, it's basically a push in and twist. If I remember correctly there was one other electrical type plug in that had to be unplug hust to make it easier to remove the other. literally took me less than 10 minutes.
I had the recall done on my truck and few days later this gas cap came on.... I've been looking everywhere for loose wires, or cracked hoses, haven't seen any... just my luck

@@jessrodzz It's called a Fuel Vapor leak detection pump. You may also want to change the purge solenoid which is at the other end of the system under the hood. Both very simple if you are mechanically inclined. It is advised to always disconnect the negative side of the battery cable prior to doing work on the fuel system and always wear standard protective gear. One reason the leak detection pum can fail is from topping off while fueling. Don't top off if you have been, it puts pressure on the valve according to the mechanic at my local dealer.
It's called a leak detection pump, or a vapor leak detection sensor. Either one should get you what you need. If you go to your dodge dealer, they will know what you are looking for.
Just crawled under from the driver's side and reached up in there. If I remember correctly it's just a quarter turn to the left. What year is your truck?
I believe you would have the same or very similar leak detection sensor; however the location of it may differ. Yours may be located more at the top of your tank. If that is what you are asking. If not please let me know.

@@jimmywarden6320 the issue is it may or may not be that leak detect sensor. There is also a purge control valve that could very well be the issue or just a split hose. This is not advice by any means and I'll say have it checked by a mechanic just to cover my butt, however it is likely that it's not super urgent, but it would be best to figure out the true source and get fixed sooner rather than later.
Hey Norma, this can be a frustrating chase for sure. Have you checked your lines underneath, replaced your fuel cap with a new oem fuel cap. Also, topping off your fuel tank can cause that sensor to fail again and again.

Would that issue cause the check engine light to come on? In the same couple of weeks my check engine light came on then my gas cap light

A leak detector pump that fails in the closed position will cause this. Check it out first before getting a new fuel pump.

Just go to your dealer and tell them you need the red clamp for your vapor purge line that leads to the front of the fuel tank.
My issue is the gas pump keeps clicking off, when I’m filling my tank, I wonder if it’s all related?
I believe this I a known issue from the filler neck being so steep on those trucks. Do you always fill at the same station?

@@jimmywarden6320 the issue is it may or may not be that leak detect sensor. There is also a purge control valve that could very well be the issue or just a split hose. This is not advice by any means and I'll say have it checked by a mechanic just to cover my butt, however it is likely that it's not super urgent, but it would be best to figure out the true source and get fixed sooner rather than later.

Hey Norma, this can be a frustrating chase for sure. Have you checked your lines underneath, replaced your fuel cap with a new oem fuel cap. Also, topping off your fuel tank can cause that sensor to fail again and again.

That’s not the only Chrysler problem that has that gas cap light issue. Chrysler is a pain in the ass.
I replaced mine and the dash lights are still on, I'll give it a week of driving b4 I unplug the battery.
Yea, if that was the problem it should reset itself after 50 miles or so.
