Obviously hims a dog, but I've been watching this channel a couple days with videos bouncing all over the timeline and I'm still trying to work out which dogs are there's etc. It's confusing bc sometimes Grim is really dark and sometimes he's light and every once in a while I see 2 dogs and I'm just like "wut."

Cecilia, look up the Berkey standalone water filters! It's what people in the US use when they're in off-grid cabins and farms. You could take muddy street water, pour it into the Berkey and within 20 minutes have perfectly safe drinking water. We use it almost exclusively, just fill and let gravity do the work...no hoses, electricity or complicated reverse-osmosis setup. It also has a fluoride filter for those who are concerned about over-fluoridation.

I wander how a filter system would do pulling water from the ocean and filtering out all the salt and impurities?

    • @bryanjk
      @bryanjk Місяць тому

@@lawrenceneuenii3564badly. I think berkley systems are great. For the price though I would just go with a nice reverse osmosis system.
They have gotten much more compact over the years as well along and even have UV sterilization built in with carbon filtering. You’d just have a cute little spout next to your regular sink.
(Also if you wanted to filter salt water, RO is a much better option because you can easily clean the membrane - unlike most filters. I’m not suggesting it be used for this, ocean water is extremely heavy in salt content)

I understand the monumental change and appreciate the stages that brought you there.
When living on an island, we had a lined well with pump. Every drop mattered. Could not fill above a level to avoid freezing the pipes in our cold winter's.
We now live on mainland and only use $12 a month in water but pay $75 to use.
We purchased a bottom feeder cooler and use RO for drinking and cooking.
Six containers rotate enough to avoid running out, especially when roads dangerous to get refilled.
Amazing system you created and the toilet is very smart.
Our dogs get 1 bath this time of year and regular brushing. They clean themselves in the snow and one dive bombs and makes snow angles.
Appreciate your sharing. Winter will be easier this year for you.
    Hug the boys!!

I can completely relate to having to be very aware of water usage. We have a well, so our water supply is essentially unlimited...but... every drop of water we use flows into underground holding tanks, which have to be pumped out by a guy in a tanker truck and hauled away. And it’s expensive, the tanks fill up in about 3 weeks. (And the basement floods if the tanks get too full). So, like you, we’ve learned to be very water conscious. Thanks for sharing your water system setup--very interesting! And I KNOW you’re loving the simple pleasures of taking a shower and washing clothes. ❤️

I live in the hot Arizona desert, and even though we don’t have a water room etc, Tucsonans have the same attitudes about water use…we do our best not to waste water, and in our dry area, many of us have rainwater catchment systems for our gardens, and some of us capture all of our “grey” water that we have washed with, etc to water outdoor spaces. You certainly take better care of resources when you have less access. 🥰

"Extra planks" in the water room in English are called Joists or support beams and "water room" looks like a utility room... the utilities being the washing machine and tumble dryer, boiler, tank room. All that said Celia your English is amazing, you go girl ❤😂❤ Celia what about a Berkey for your drinking water, I'm not sure I have the correct spelling of its name. It is mobile so can sit anywhere on your counter top but I think you need to buy replacement water filters to maintain them. Google it and see. I've only ever seen them on UA-cam in videos of full-time RVers xxx Showering the dogs lol I would have put on my swimming suit and just closed myself and Grim in the shower making sure I had everything to hand and his towel over the top of the shower first then Christopher could have exchanged dogs with... My guess is gathering rainwater from the roof wouldn't be efficient for part of the year when it isn't snowing. It could be used to bath the dogs and wash items outside when needed but needs cannot be stored for long periods. Here in the desert during the drought, we take "military showers", meaning water on, water off, wash the body/hair, and rinse. One can use less than a few gallons. During the War Sarajevo 1992-96 we didn’t have water, electricity, heating, sometimes also not enough food( at least we had a proper pluming 😂), but we used to that for over a 4 years, heat the house ass much as possible ( at one point we didn’t have enough wood for heating we used it just for preparing a food), heat the water, put it in a bucket and get a shower, that’s it, when you don’t have something, you get alternative system and it’s working❤

I'm sure you've already thought about various water filtration systems to allow you to have absolutely pure drinking water from your existing system. The most basic being some "stand-alone" countertop device, such as the "Berkey" style units which require no power. Or, on the other end of the cost spectrum, something like the reverse-osmosis (commonly called RO) systems that are typically plumbed into an area like your kitchen sink.

Fenris almost seems to enjoy the shower whereas Grim seemed like he couldn't wait for it to be over. We have a Belgian Malinois and on the odd occasion we have to shower him he almost seems waterproof, but grooming him afterwards produces enough fluff and fur to create a whole extra dog. We also have a Yorkshire Terrier and when he gets wet it looks like he has this tiny little body of a Chihuahua, its hilarious!!!

. I watch these by happenstance when I see them; no order, no timeline. It was only two or three videos ago you and Chris described you plan to not get another dog until Grim was nudging the end of things. Now! Suddenly!! Grim has a colleague! He wears glasses and seems so scholarly, so erudite. I can see why you did that; bringing a little class into the canine world.
. Oh. And shake in the shower. Brilliant. Could become a dance craze.

Having the fountain drinking water tub or container would be good because it holds more. Not just looks nice. Lol. Your cabin is beautiful. I don’t think I could live there only because the cops would kill my many injuries and such. But it is beautiful absolutely beautiful. And watching these videos reminds me of the environment and how important it is to be mindful and protective of it. So does our changing weather. We never got large tornadoes before and now they are coming F3-F4 and we are so not set up for that. But obviously weather has changed. And watching the permafrost in places melt and explode into huge sinkholes is scary as all. It’s good people like you that live in these areas document the environment around you. It educates everyone. Maybe more will think about environment and how we need to protect it.

When I gave my friend bulldog a bath, I wound up soaked and also needed to wash the walls and floors. Luckily they don't need baths often.
Also I learned that you should NEVER shave a husky. (not that I was planning to) Even in warm weather because their fur will also trap a layer of air to keep them cool.

I'm so happy you have water now. I'm from Australia and lived off-grid for almost ten years. We had a composting toilet that was outside, solar power and tank water. You have to be really mindful of how much water and power you use. Our solar system wasn't very big so I couldn't use an iron (I never iron anyway hehe). We also had a gas fridge and stove and a wood heater.

Your water system is basically what’s in travel trailers and RVs, except you have it in a much larger scale and with what I suppose is a much better pump. If you have water running inside pipes and water comes out of the taps when you turn them on, you have proper indoor plumbing in my books; whether the water comes from a cistern, a holding tank, a well, or city pipes is irrelevant. :)

Here in the Caribbean, we have a cistern underground and not a water tank for the water. But one thing we do since it rains here plenty, we have put a trench-like curve at the end of the roof which leads into the cistern. When it rains the water runs off the roof, runs into the trench and goes into the cistern or tank.

@@CeciliaBlomdahl We are looking at water filtration systems and a water maker. The water maker would be used in the winter season so we can stop dragging 300 ft of hose from a building's water faucet to our vessel's water tank.

Funny. Those plastic containers you use for drinking water remind me of my childhood. They look exactly like the ones we used in Sardinia. Every summer there was a drought there (this was in the early 90’s) and they’d shut the water off every afternoon to save water so we’d use this to carry the water from this big well out if town. I can still taste the water from these plastic things, had a very peculiar taste. This is so odd. I had not seen one of those in more than 25 years and here I am, looking at one on a video from Svalbard of all places 🤣

  • @elizabethbew3676

You mentioned about not wanting to drink the water from the tank. Here in Australia my home water tanks (we are not in town) collect rain water during the winter and then we use it over the summer. We have 3x 22,000 litter tanks that just collect water straight off the roof and then we drink it all summer with no filter at all. I'm originally from the UK and I found this CRAZY but no one gets sick from it. Our tanks are outside in the shade and they are just plastic so not insulation from warm days, we do live in the south but still get +40° days. I even rang the local health department and they were just like 'umm yer that's how it is in rural Australia what else are you gonna do?!' Something for you to think about and look into. If your not Aussie chill you can buy a UV unit that fits in under the kitchen sink to treat the water before drinking. Love you videos!

Years ago we lived completely off the grid and my husband used to go and get water in the same type of a large container that you two use. We were lucky to have a hill on which our water tank stood so our water was all gravity fed with lovely water pressure. I am still very frugal with water even though we haven’t lived that way in years. It’s a good habit to have!
