- Transformers has many iconic foes, and right up there is the rivalry between Soundwave and Blaster! These reissues of the communication specialists commemorate the 40th anniversary of Transformers and pits Decepticon versus Autobot once again. Captain Kyle examines them and compares them to earlier releases to see if they are worth it for your collection.
Soundwave, the Decepticon Communications Officer, has long been a favorite among Transformers fans, especially with his squad of cassette warriors. This reissue features Laserbeak and Ravage as his minions. But the Autobots needed a counter for this enemy, so Blaster came aboard to match Soundwave in a battle that... well, took both of them out in the Headmasters cartoon. Blaster didn’t initially have cassettes, but eventually got a set of his own, including Steeljaw, who comes with this reissue. Captain Kyle examines them and compares them to earlier releases to see what the differences are with these two figures.

beautiful. its great to see something like this archived and documented!
no chrome, no diecast, no stickers, Hasbro cheaping out even on their anniversary toys
That's Hasbro for you the New toys we get the more cheaper the plastic is
Well, there are some diecast parts. But yes, no stickers or chrome. G1 Transformers without those... doesn't seem right.
It's also unfair that Blaster had only one cassette.
There is the same amount of die cast. The deco is done to match the animation colours, in line with the previous movie releases.
You just don't get the purpose of this line 😅😂
The worst part of this is having to go to Walmart.
These are cool figures I'll catch them on clearance
Same Saw Soundwave tomight 69,99$🇨🇦 guess I will wait clearance
@@francoisregis2155 just wondering by any chance was it at walmart in the united states? been looking for one but dont want to pay too much
@Rosarioplusvampire no Im in Canada so its a Canadian price a bit too much for my taste.
Plus the box seems really cheap
Guess I will wait for clearance if I ever want one
So Soundwave was originally designed over 50 years in Japan with CHILDREN in mind. So, they couldn’t make it crazy expensive. But, now even with more modern manufacturing technology, they decided to make him less detailed (cheaper to make) even though the main audience is adult collectors. If anything, you’d think this one would be much nicer than the original…
It’s supposed to be cartoon accurate, because cartoon accurate sells.
Imagine if they officially reissue mirage, wheeljack and sunstreaker
That would be nice, but two factors make that unlikely. One, they are concentrating on characters who were in the movie and those three barely appeared. Plus, I believe the molds for those toys are in rough shape. Definitely the Wheeljack mold, or we would have gotten reissues a while back. I would be happy to get them, but I can't help thinking it won't happen.
@@ToySpotlitewasn't Mirage's mold destroyed in an accident when moving it from the USA to overseas manufacturing facilities?
Yeah them 3 bots never had an authentic reissue, just knockoff nese ones, molds were damaged destroyed or stolen or lost or who effin knows-however poor excuse either way.
Great video and an excellent cat cameo!
Hopefully we get the remaining cassettes in the animation deco.
I'm pretty irritated that Walmart went from preorder to sold out on Soundwave, *without EVER having had him in stock!!* Guess I'll have to gamble on goin' to a couple different Walmart store locations.
Blaster...is tempting, but not nearly as tempting as Soundwave. That said, Hasbro better grow a brain and do ALL of the Tape Minions for Blaster & Soundwave in this style!!
They’re back in stock as of January 30th, 2024.
Soundwave is my favorite TF of all time. Still have my G1, along with Buzzsaw, Ravage, Rumble, Frenzy and Laserbeak.
Hi Captain Kyle! When are we getting OUR reissues, my original parts are a bit wore these days...
Well, I told you to stop playing with your parts that way...
I really hate the grey plastic. Love the old school chrome plastic.
I think they turned out great. The boxes are a bit misleading, as they come in a G1 style box (with plastic window). Since these are based on the 1986 movie colors, these transformers probably should have come in those 1986-Movie style boxes (the boxes without the clear window in front). The reason these don't come with decals isn't because Hasbro is being "cheap." It's because these are based on the 1986 movie and OG 1984 anime colors.
You know Soundwave was in the series before the movie, right?
I'm thinking he meant that since the former line was for the movie, this one seems to be a continuation of it, despite the change back to a OG box. (I think it would have fixed a lot of confusion if they simply put "in cartoon colors" in small print under Soundwave's name.) @@JomasterTheSecond
Yup, big fan of the OG series. I only mentioned the 1986 movie because there is another line of G1 Transformers with "movie colors" (and it says "movie" on the front of the box). It may have been less confusing for people if this 40th anniversary edition utilized those same movie box-styles (the ones without window packaging).@@JomasterTheSecond
I collect Transformers, G.I. JOE, AND Star Wars. I started being real picky as soon as they ditched the Plastic window. Plus, most of this stuff will be available at Ollie's, ROSS, or online for massive discount. Not all of it is bad, but the majority is. I'd say the G.I.JOES are way nicer. It's sad to see as a 40 year Transformers fan! Great video! subbed!
Man I am glad I still have all my OG transformers. Now the question is. Where the hell did I put them.
I so wish I had these but not right now to much and hard to find haha . I had them all as a kid just like to old school color for blaster better he might of been my first new transformers maybe even first transformers ever so young at the time Im so old haha
I remember the OG G1 blaster had a working radio, now the re-issue one has a fake on/off switch I believe? New box specifically says non-working radio…
No, the original G1 Blaster was not a working radio.
I have soundwave and i prefer the show accurate colors 10/10 figure for me
Nice review(s). A Skye cameo is always a nice bonus. I noticed the my cassette door on Soundwave doesn't close as neatly on the top left as it does on the right. Also, mine arrived without one of Laserbeak's weapons. Weird. Shipping from Hasbro Pulse was crazy fast though.
I would ask them to replace it. They may send you another and let you keep the first. And Skye appreciates the support!
@@ToySpotlite Just got a replacement from Hasbro. They said it may not be the same figure, and... it isn't. Blaster. I guess I'm OK with that.
Amo a tu gato se robó la cámara ❤️
The reason for the color difference, no chrome, and no stickers is they where trying to be cartoon accurate
That's the later version of Soundwave, it has the cassette door hinges on the outside of the body man.
These were intended as the “movie deco” g1 reissues, weren’t they? They just thought oh, shit 40 year anniversary and popped them in these boxes instead of last years ugly movie deco g1 boxes.
That being said I love the look of the steel jaw that comes with blaster. I really don’t need anymore blasters or soundwaves but the cassette decos look good.
I miss the movie boxes. The artwork on those is great.
" Laserbeak eject!' 🤣
Skipped on the Soundwave, since I still have my original and the re-issue from a couple of years ago, and I don't really need a cartoon color/style accurate version of the G1, but I'll take a nice SS86 🎬 version of them...😅
Blaster, on the other hand, I will be getting him to go with my Soundwave re-issue, so I can have them displayed in G1 style boxes, PLUS Blaster comes with a freaking STEELJAW😊, which will FINALLY get me a complete G1 Autobot Cassette team!
Btw, Kyle...(Or anyone, really!) Would you happen to have any idea of where I could find clear micro-cassette cases to fit the G1 cassettes, without having to buy blank cassettes WITH them just to get the cases?!
I want to create cassette case covers for each of my G1 cassettes, Autobot & Decepticon, so I can do a different type of display, and just have a nicer looking and neater storage option, as well... I've looked everywhere I can think of, but I feel like there HAS to be some place where they'd be available, since it's easy to find 24pks of clear cases for regular sized cassettes, without having to buy the blank tapes with them... 🤔🤔🤔
i had Blaster back then and i thought it was just an ugly bunch blocks.. i can see they were faithfull to the original 😝
Again? They're reissuing Soundwave and Blaster AGAIN? Yeah it's cool they've included a couple of tapes, but most collectors have already had SO many opportunities to pick these up; c'mon Hasbro, celebrate 40 years of G1 with something different and interesting...
Hasbro you were so close, so close and then you drop the ball. It's not like these are cheap to buy either. The line "oh it's not chrome because it's like the cartoon" is, and I know because I'm in the industry, bollocks. An excuse to cheap out.
Nice buttons
Wow. Quality has gone down down down. I remember these toys growing up. Quality was great. Now all plastic.
More g1 animation deco releases of g1 toys. They do look nice but thats why there is no chrome its not a rerelease its a redeco.
Got the originals incomplete but nice
I never knew the weapons were batteries lol😅I feel so slow 🦥
I didn't know it when I got my first Soundwave (secondhand). I thought the compartment was for Buzzsaw's weapons.
Walmart please reproduce the entire G1 line
Poor old Blaster ... nobody loves him (Except Skye) hasnt sold out once and Soundwave sold outs its pre-order very quickly and all subsequent restocks
The 40th is better. The stickers were ugly anyway
Anime colour Soundwave is... very weird.
sucks, he-man beats both gi loss and transforloss too, he-man toy line is the best , oh and the turtles also beat the translosses too,.. so there, so there, he-man and the turtles win, foreverver,....yay,.......marius(punk rules).
The fact that blaster still has that non animation face after all these years is pathetic😐
Habruh hates making people happy. D&D, Magic the Gathering, Packaging issues and now such a cheap crappy 40th anniversary edition of G1. What aHoles
Your G1 looks better.
They look like crap compared to the originals, honestly.
Cheap plastic ,no thanks ill just keep buying G1 and Master piece on ebay 😁🤣✌️🍺🇺🇸
These are both terrible… they’re not even close to the terrible reissue. I’m super happy I’m not wasting my money on this crap.
These two figures are part of the recent released of vi gave G1 Transformers reissues in the G1 toon decos from the Animated movie.
Nice review, thanks for posting. I ordered both of these guys, but I am keeping mine MISB. So, this was a great chance to see what they look like out of the box. My Blaster came a few weeks ago, but my Soundwave is arriving today!
What happened to all the chrome on the reissues. Makes them look a little more cheap imo
Honestly not a fan of these I know they are going for a g1 cartoon accurate toy but it just looks cheap and unfinished to me
Sky is a beautiful cat. These two are the only reissues of either G1 version i own. I got lucky in acquisition because they lasted maybe 5 minuted out in the world. No chrome and no stickers was unfortunate but they do look good in their cartoon/movie colors. And I finally have Steeljaw. Cant complain, overmuch. I am definitely the target audience.
saw the Soundwave in a store, saw the lack of chrome, and passed.
He had no chrome in the cartoons...that's the point of this line 🤦♂️🤦♂️
no one wants that@@markwilliamsmusic2987
It's definitely a pick up if you didn't get the older reissues.
I really like the printed symbols on the cassettes. I think it looks great on Steeljaw. Wish they would have painted his eyes blue. The Decepticons got the eye paint so it would have been a nice touch considering he doesn't have stickers. Miss the chrome. The metallic paint looks decent on the cassette weapons though. Plain without their stickers but like you say repros can be had cheap.
It looks like the re-issues are actually attempting “cartoon-accurate” coloring…
…that’s actually REALLY cool…
I almost got blaster yesterday because I always wanted him as a kid, but its over $60 and doesn't seem worth it.
The old one looks better. What's the point if you can't replicate your own product properly
Soundwave looks cheap, very disappointing for a 40th anniversary reissue.
Cartoon accurate doesn't look cheap I have him and love it !
@@markwilliamsmusic2987 are you blind, no stickers, almost no prints, that gray looks drab and cheap even if it is more cartoon accurate than the bloody og
No chrome, no sticker sheet, no die-cast? Not worth 50 bucks each.
Soundwave’s chest insignia really pops when he has a tape in, can barely see it otherwise. I like the animation colours, I have enough original looking Soundwaves lying about somewhere
I bought soundwave yesterday it's a childhood grail and I dont even collect transformers but I had to have him hes awesome!....I have blaster all I need is a prime and megatron
Thanks for the review! I'll give it a miss, still very much happy with my Legacy Blaster
That's why we watch reviews. To decide whether or not we'll buy something. Glad this helped.
Blaster was the first transformer I ever got as a toy.
Yes thanks to you I am getting both of them. I can't wait
The dial to the side of Blaster's tape deck is a reminder of what an abomination G1 Blaster as gutted, massively stripped down retool, of a Microchange mold, truly is. To be clear, I'm saying that Blaster is such a gutted retool of a previous figure, that it makes the Medium and Large Machine Wars toys, look like mere recolours of the meduim and large Predators and Turbomasters in comparison.
So here's how the original MC-21 Radiocasse Robo works, as a working FM radio (I picked one up I think it was 20 years ago). The reason the cassette bay in Blaster is deeper than on Soundwave, is because it's designed to fit a powered AM receiver (button cell battery), in the shape of a microcassette, which interacts with an audio amplifier and speaker set within Blaster itself. The tuner block features a 2.5mm socket, which connects to a protruding plug in the tape deck, as well as a tuner wheel on the side of the tuner block.
Pressing play on "Blaster" closes the circuit between the amplifier and the tuner block, whilst pressing stop, opens it. The dial you were wondering about, is actually a separate piece on the Microchange version, connected to a cog, whose teeth mesh with the teeth on the tuning wheel on the tuner block. The power switch on the front of the right leg, is a working power switch , with a battery compartment for 2 "AA" batteries on the back of the right leg. On the side of the left leg, is a volume control dial and on the back of the left leg, where you see a circular hole on Blaster, is actually a 2.5mm socket for the 2.5mm plug on the supplied crystal radio earpiece to plug in, in case people don't want to use the speakers in the figure's legs, to listen to FM radio.
Speaking of the crystal radio earpiece, there's a reason why Blaster's un has those 2 gaping holes in it, and it's something you can see for yourself if you have a crystal radio earpiece with a 2.5mm plug on the end. The earpiece plugs into the massive hole in the middle of the gun, the cord winds around the rifle stock, and the 2.5mm plug slots into the small hole at the back of the stock.
Oh and because Blaster needed to interact with the microcassettes in the line, ("Enemy", "Laserbeak" and "Ravage"), MC-21 also features a storage compartment in the back of the figure, which can store a microcassette. While my information comes on hands-on experience from owning a copy, Transformerland have uploaded a scan of the instructions, if anyone wants to see for themselves.
The irony of all this is that if Hasbro and Takara had simply redesigned the 2.5mm plug mount on the inside of the tape deck to fold down and flip up 90 degrees, all of these features could have been retained AND Blaster still would have been able to fit cassette Transformers in his chest.
Like I said, when it comes to utterly gutting and nerfing a reuse of a mold with Transformers, G1 Blaster is arguably the worst offender out there, and it makes the gutting of gimmicks on the Medium and Large Machine Wars figures, look like mere recolours of their Turbomasters and Predators counterparts in comparison.
NOT SHINEY
I wish I preordered Soundwave earlier
I didn't even know this was a thing?! Otherwise I'd have pre-ordered both lol
Back in stock January 30th 2024.
@@LLawliet2 HabroPulse?
I got blaster, but Soundwave sold out before I could order him :,( (I also have a g1 blaster reissue already but don’t have a g1 Soundwave… but I DO have the g1 ravage that came with the WFC beastwars ravage a couple years ago
Well, I ordered a "reissue" Soundwave so I could review that. Could be a viable alternative. Keep an eye out for that.
No metal feet on Sound Wave what’s going on here 🤔
Actually, they are painted grey, but still are metal. At least that's what they feel like.
the big differences is the company's that do the diecast plastics have different regulations that they are required to follow
The entire G1 line had so much lead in the paint In the dycast plastics I'm surprised that we didn't get lead poisoning from all exposure
Great review I got soundwave yesterday and I have not put him down
The original soundwave looks far better. The blaster isnt as much of a downgrade.
Thanks for the review
I was a sucker mark for the Soundwave. I still wish they'd release a Soundwave that's identical to the original. This one has the separated button but the reissue didn't. Hasbro knows what they are doing.
They just painted it to look like its a separate button.
Soundwave was my third Transformer!!!
I don’t remember Ravage coming with him…then again my memory isn’t what it once was…
The original came with Buzzsaw.
@@ToySpotlite HUZZAH!!!
@@SpiridonPrimefun fact: actually the original MC-10 Microchange version of Soundwave, could come with either MC-01 ("Enemy"), MC-02 ("Ravage") or MC-03 ("Laserbeak"). In fact the polystyrene insert for MC-10 was a universal insert whoch could fit any of those 3 toy molds.
Hmm they don't even have the color change thermal symbol, it's almost as if they are knock off products and not official Hasbro products, the least they could've done was put the chrome, they look much better with the chrome parts.
My 40th Anniversary Soundwave that i bought at Walmart in Canada has a stamp "(c) Hasbro 1974 1983" and "(c) Tomy" in the battery compartment
Nice. But the quality is pretty disappointing. I mean, just put in the chrome, die cast and rubber tyres for the later releases. Retailing at sgd89.90 in Singapore.
Just another example of Hasbro going for money grab like they are doing with D&D. Another reason why I won't be buying any Hasbro products.
Wow looks really cheap and generic. Dull looking
They look very compromised and cheaply made compared to the 1980's originals.
Haha, nope. Not paying almost 50 bucks for plastic, when I have the mp's, but still nice if you don't have any.
Minimum $45 and its just junk plastic not cast metal.
I'll buy the new missing link g1 Optimus die cast metal instead
The original G1 Soundwave is better than this one.
Blaster is the better of these two. I think it actually looks better then the original G1. Steeljaw is not the best, but hey at least you get a cassette with this one.
Try moving less when filming on zoomed shots
I would only buy them if they were built with rechargeable bluetooth speakers. They really did cheap out on everything lately.
I’m going to pass on this….. toy looks like crap. Original G1 toys waaaaaay better.
This place is coming to an end 😪 everything is more expensive but made the cheapest the can get away with.
Maybe you can point out the differences without you handling them so much.
So this Soundwave is more in line with the colours from the cartoon, interesting.
Ns. And this is why i've been back in off collecting...my pre ordered I did right away a long time ago.. was just canceled.
That sucks. Who did you preorder from?
Doesn’t matter, you can’t get them. Scalpers bought them all.
Seems seems to be way cheaper than my twentieth anniversary . How mighty have fallen
ravage stands a lot better if you sperate the legs out so he's on four posts instead of two
Still got my original Blaster
You can have plastic but can only a certain %of the package
At least Ravage doesn't look like a bulldog this time.
to open or not to open
That Soundwave look so cheap
The leg of the walmart 2021 color are wrong in this reissue i still have my g1 and the legs where grey like the 40th but the 2021 red/orange is correct !!!
The new ones look like cheap boo boo
Looks very plastic
Hard pass, ; looks cheap
