- How to get urine smell out of carpet
This video demonstrates why it is important to reach all areas of pet urine contamination if you want to get rid of urine smell. The larger the pet the greater chance that the pee has filtered down into the carpet padding and sub floor making complete removal using homemade solutions almost impossible.
If you try to use an enzyme (the one we use amzn.to/2T05zjp ) to sanitize the area make sure to pour enough solution onto the carpet to get the padding and sub floor wet. Dilute according to instructions on the container and make sure to THOROUGHLY RINSE the whole area. Sometimes you can use a powerful Wet/Dry vacuum ( amzn.to/39FU9Z0 ) to pull up the solution once it has had enough time to “eat up” the urine.
After rinsing allow to dry to see how effective the process was. Peroxide can be used when the carpet is dry to help with residual staining and odors.

If I may share my story to help others outside of your service area. Not to bore you with details, but my issues was human urine saturating carpet from elderly having accidents. . I tried every 'pet urine' carpet cleaner, Oxy cleaner, etc, etc I could buy and no good, the smell would eventually come back. The suggestion of Cleaning Vinegar, I mixed 2 water to 1 vinegar and pour a few quarts in the carpeted area. I let it sit 30 minutes. I used my Rug Dr carpet cleaner on suction only and you can not believe the YELLOW water coming out of the carpet. And yes, it smells like pee. The urine got onto the carpet over 2 yrs ago! I just discovered Cleaning Vinegar for cleaning carpets. I have then gone over the carpet with a Pet Urine carpet cleaner. It has greatly reduced the odor of urine on the carpets. I will state that I have Berber carpet and I installed a waterproof padding below, figuring I'd have issues with the elderly I took care of.

The issue most people have with removing the urine odors and contamination is that they are not saturating the complete contaminated area. The enzyme or oxidizer MUST make direct contact and saturate the affected areas and be allow to dwell for enough time to complete its job-always followed by a generous flushing/rinse.
Remember: The pad under the carpet and the sub-floor have to be treated as well.

Wow thanks for your service with the elderly and I would like to try using vinegar and water to clean pet stains out of carpet I have a truck mount and a water claw made for urine removal without tearing up carpet.

Hi David, great video ! I used to work for Stanley Steamer back in the 80's as a helper for a an old pro who taught me a little about the business of cleaning carpets. We used at the time an enzyme product for pet unrine for spot cleaning, and if it was really bad, would go the day before, treat the area and let it sit over night to soak into the affected areas. It appears there's been some advances of home products since then, but I found that using hot steam with a truck mount cleaner with a REALLY strong vac was very effective, making other do it yourself methods look like a waste of time and money. Your cleaning equipment looks very impressive and you obviously know your stuff and take pride in your work ! Question: There's some new home steam cleaners that are popular, such as the Vapamore MR-100. You get the hot steam however there's no extraction. Do you have any comments of advice on these ?

Steamers without extraction can't do much in the way of cleaning.
Creating your own extraction system using a simple spray bottle and wet/dry vacuum is a better solution. Also, you can purchase a small extractor made for household use.
The story of my life. I've been carpet and rug cleaning since 2011. I have easily 1,000 urine jobs under my belt, perhaps 950 successful. Perhaps 100 turned down do to sub floor contamination too severe. Next week, I have a condo to clean. Did it two years ago with a water claw. First floor on concrete slab. All carpet and pad will be pulled. All concrete will be scrubbed with a buffer and stiff brush using an enzymatic cleaner. Once it dries, Kilz Max primer, maybe even two coats. I actually want to prime and paint the drywall before laying new carpet, because in this extreme case, the odor has penetrated the walls. The owner has used every magic potion they make. Dropped a good $250 on a home machine. I know the last time we cleaned, we water clawed every square inch, floated the carpet with blowers and ran a dehumidifier. We basically treated it as a Cat 2 water loss, though it was more like Cat 3 sewage backup.
Sometimes we have to go "nuclear" on these jobs.

will the sally's 20 clear volume developer work on colored carpet. the carpet we have is a grayish black? I don't want it to bleach the color
The sally's 20 has never removed the factory dyes on any synthetic carpet we have cleaned.
Usually dye loss happens when you go to Sally's 40 or higher.
Hint-spray some on the carpet in a hidden areas (closet) and let sit overnight.
This should tell you if it will harm the dyes.

The waterclaw attachment can only be used with a very strong wet vacuum cleaner.

At the very least you should get a powerful wet/dry shop vacuum.
The plastic tools that come with the machine can be used to pull the detergents through the carpet and most of the padding. The more expensive tools like the stainless steel short wand and the "water claw" will make the work go much faster and be more thorough but simple hand tools will get the job done.
The quicker you can get at the spot/stain the easier it will be to flush the area.

Okay so probably a dumb question but what happens if you don't have one of the water draw things? I live in an apartment and can't pull up the carpet (and i definitely dont know how) and i don't have one of the auction things. If I just use and enzyme cleaner and let it dry do you think that'd work (probably not but it never hurts to ask)?

If you don’t have a shop vac and can’t do any other extraction method try this:
-blot up as much contamination as possible if wet then try applying several applications of 3% hydrogen peroxide (the stuff in the brown bottle)
Make sure not to dry the peroxide quickly. When dry it stops working
There are more aggressive peroxides but try the 3% first

I dont own a water claw. Would a consumer grade rug shampooer have enough suction power to extract all the moisture. Or in my case should i just let it evaporate naturally?

A consumer cleaning machine can't extract the water from deep down into the padding and carpet back.
A relatively inexpensive shop vacuum might do it.
Simply allowing the moisture to evaporate still leaves the enzymes in there.
Thorough flushing will give the best results.
Try the wet vacuum if you can.

A powerful portable extractor with dual vacuums that the pros use is very expensive. Expect to pay a min of $2000.00. I don't know of any portable for under 500.00 that will do the job. You might want invest in the most powerful shop vac you can find.
Also check out online sites that sell used equipment-sometimes cleaners are selling their equipment.

Most likely you used that detergent is an extremely high pH cleaner. High pH can chemically burn carpet fibers.
Try thoroughly rinsing the carpet with this product:

I got an issue I have a room that has a bathroom in it and the toilet overflowed and got shit water everywhere and into the room with carpet and I removed the carpet and padding under the carpet but still smells could the smell be on the concrete
The concrete is very porous, it can hold the odors for a very long time.
Also check to see if any liquid got behind the trim molding where the floor meets the wall.
Make sure any area that came in contact with the feces is completed cleaned and sanitized.

A shampoo machine doesn’t actually extract the soap residue with a flushing action sufficient enough to do a thorough job.
A shampoo machine can do a great job at cleaning the carpet fibers but not at pulling liquids from deep down in the backing material

If you have a musty smell you probably already have microbial growth-hire a professional to assess the extent of the damage and recommend a plan to remove the water. Most homemade cures don't work. Good Luck... try looking at iicrc.org
Thank you for answering all the comments. Very honest . My rug looks great but it has a sweat smell. I cleaned it 4 times . I may have wet it to much . Never thought of the backing and underfloor would become so wet . I’m going to try again with a different method and if no better I will replace . I live in northern Alberta and very expensive to have anything done here . They charge 150.00 an hour for anything . Just to look is 150.00 before starting any job. Sealing the subfloor is a great idea. I have no animals but the previous owner did . 2 Shepard’s and stained one end of the house . Funny when I inspected the home no oder . Now it’s driving me crazy .
The sweet smell may be from the perfumes that detergent manufacturers put in their product.
Rinsing is very important.

Please remember to make sure the enzyme makes contact with all the urine deposits and then is thoroughly rinsed. Repeat if necessary.

3% hydrogen peroxide or Sally's 20 clear volume applied to all areas after the cleaning will help with the smell and staining.
If you have many spots of urine it will take a lot of time to treat everything.

By "fake" do you mean indoor/outdoor green turf?
The process is the same and the chemistry is the same.
Saturating a glued down carpet on concrete with enzyme is very safe because there is no subfloor (plywood) to consider.

What good is a steam cleaner...meaning a Bissell like machine that sprays detergent and can wet vacuum up the urine???? For quick effective extraction in small areas they work, if you follow directions.
Hoover smart wash is an extrqction machine: If you use it before the carpets get too soiled if should work fine. Follow the rules:
1. don't use too much soap
2. rinse thoroughly

Apply rinse chemical, flush it completely out, repeat until all urine is removed
Can you explain what the enzyme is ? Would that be vinegar? I’m not near you or would hire you can’t find anyone near me. So first flush with enzyme? Then rinse? Then? Can you recall products to use ? Thx.
Generally the process is:
-Apply detergent/enzyme
-allow sufficient dwell time-rub/agitate if necessary to help break up the urine salts
-Rinse with vinegar
-repeat as necessary
Vinegar is an acid rinse which helps remove detergents and soils that have been loosened. White vinegar leaves the carpet in an acid state which is especially important when dealing with natural fibers (wool, cotton, viscose-aka rayon). It's is acceptable to use the vinegar as a detergent as well as a rinse but treating urine with an enzyme first is best.
Remember: If you use an enzyme for urine-especially older urine spots- make sure to thoroughly rinse it all out.
If you do not have the equipment to rinse the detergents my advice is to start with a white vinegar wash & rinse only and see if that is sufficient.

Hi! Do you recommend anyone in Bakersfield, California? Two story apartment building. My roommate moved out and now I’m worried about the pet urine stain in their room. It’s in the corner of the room and smells bad, looks like old i time but is still wet/grimy on top. I don’t wanna get charged by the landlord for something that was my roommates doing and I’m trying to find a hood solution to have professionals clean it up to avoid landlord charging me up the butt. If you call a pro make sure they have experience with pet urine.
Usually they can offer different levels of service: complete removal and sanitization of the area or for much less $$$ a topical treatment that will fix things on the surface only.

Hello, we are getting out carpet removed and luxury tile laid. I do clean with enzymes. However, I do at times still smell urine. We're biting the bullet and just getting it removed. We are in a concrete slab. What would you recommend we do if there are spots on the concrete? Is it the same process? Thank you kindly!

When the carpet is removed mark all the urine spots that are on the concrete. Thoroughly wash the areas, let dry and coat with 2 coats of polyurathane which will lock in any odors. No need to add enzymes for this process.

What if there was no wetness at all, it was mostly on something else? It was a very very slight pee smell that you have to get close enough to smell, is it still harmful and will it go through carpet? I think it was majority on towels, however I will still clean that general area with pet spot cleaner.

So my little brother had a accident and tried using soap and water to clean it and it didn’t work so then he put vineagar on the carpet any suggestions
First, rinse all the soap out of the carpet using a 1:1 solution of white vinegar/water.
Another great rinse that we use all the time is Pro chem all fiber rinse

Repeat if necessary then just to make sure spray with peroxide.

So, if a whole room had this problem what would you do? I have a special needs child and he has had multiple accidents and no matter how much I clean it it’s not enough.
If a whole is involved you must consider replacement-it usually is to expensive to constantly treating all the areas.
Another option is to remove the wall to wall carpeting and use a lose laid synthetic area rug which can be removed for a thorough cleaning. Also, indoor/outdoor carpet is inexpensive and can be safely hosed off outdoors when necessary...its not very comfortable though...Best of luck
I have a big portion of my carpet covered in dog urine for 7+ yrs. I've tried using a carpet cleaner, baking soda, among other things, and nothing seems to fix the problem and actually makes the odor worse

If the contamination is that bad spraying a topical treatment probably won’t work.
Remember, the enzymes have to make contact with the urine, allowed to dwell then completely flushed out.
Peroxide can be used if a small residual odor remains.
It sounds like you might want to consider hiring someone in your area who has the training and equipment to clean up the carpet.

A bissell will work to pull/extract the residual water & detergent but a shop vac probably has more power.
Run the Bissell over the carpet several times, slowly to get all the moisture.

As an alternative:
If the area is very small, and recent clean with mild detergent (like Woolite), rinse thoroughly then use a peroxide.

I have a carpet that has a few stains of dog urine. I have put so many things on them and I have washed them so many times and they do go away, but once the carpet is dry and we start walking over them they appear again! I know they are trapping dirt etc... any tips? please help
Hi Thanks for the question.
What you are describing is what we call "wicking"...meaning soap & urine residue have not been fully flushed out of the carpet and carpet cushion resulting in a sticky substance that attracts soil and shows as a dirty spot in a few days following the cleaning.
The only real solution is to thoroughly pull all residues from the cushion and carpet backing using a powerful vacuum or to pull back the carpet and hand clean all areas from underneath.
If you try to do it from the top make sure to apply plenty of rinse water (1:1 ratio water/white vinegar) getting the backing wet and immediately use a wet vacuum machine to pull up as much as possible. This will take time because you will probably have to do it several times but it is worth the extra effort.

Not sure if you are still checking messages from a video so long ago, but hoping. I have been struggling with a 7x15 section in my basement with cat urine. The other day I finally just decided to tear up all the affected padding and discard it leaving just the carpet and the concrete sub floor. I have done a few enzyme and odor treatments on what's left and still have a very strong smell. The urine marks are gone from the back of the carpet, so I believe the enzyme did its job, but cant get rid of the smell. Currently treating with Odoban Odor Cleaner.

Start with the concrete: wash it, let it dry then apply two coats of polyurathane to seal any odor in.
The Carpet:
Flood the effected areas with enzyme, allow to dwell several hours
-Flush fresh water through all areas to remove enzyme
-saturate with 3% peroxide allow to dwell until it drys on it own...DO NOT Speed dry the peroxide
-repeat if necessary
Stronger peroxides can be used but are risky

You need antibacterial chemicals, I normally use Lysol, Mr Clean, Oxydizers, about 1/20 part chemicals and 19/20 part Hot water. you need to douse the surface area and extract as much as possible. Let it dry and repeat process. Every time you douse let it sit for at least 20 minutes. Usually 3 times is enough. make sure dry carpet as fast as possible get a blower and make sure room is properly ventilated turn on all fans or air conditioners.

Most professional carpet cleaners offer a service referred to as "sub-surface extraction". This is a process where the detergents made to remove urine are soaked deep into the carpet, padding and sub floor and then flushed out using strong vacuum tools.
Professionals with experience doing this should be able to remove the odor. The down side: It usually is much more expensive than a typical surface extraction of the carpeting.
Note: If at any time you decide to replace the carpeting paint over any urine deposits on the wooden sub floor with polyurethane sealer-this helps the odor stay trapped in the wood.

I just bought as well, pet smell is awful!! Got estimates on carpet replacement , laminate and tile replacement, looking at 5000 for carpet (1400 sq ft Home Depot ) , laminate 3100, tile 5000 labor only ( stairs make it more expensive ) with a tile guy on Craigslist . Going to buy laminate and we will be installing ourselves at hopefully under 4000 ( including all tools needed , miter saw, nail gun , special tools for flooring). But good tip to seal the the stains. Actually that’s the best tip.

Thoroughly rinsing is also important.

By Steam vacuum i think you mean hot water extraction. The water claw devise that I'm using in this video is connected to an extraction machine, also know as a steam cleaner.
For regular carpet cleaning or a small pet accident a normal cleaning tool is ok. Larger spills or accidents will require a water claw for what we call sub surface extraction.

So basically, I'm screwed with the cat pee. 😩 I need to get rid of the carpet and install vinyl flooring.
If your carpet is older and severely contaminated with cat pee replacement might be the best option.
I have a small rental and the renter just moved out. She wrecked the carpet with cigarette burns and dog urine. The carpet is going and I may be able to save the pad. My question is should I put a sheet of plastic over the pad before the new carpet goes down. Pets are not allowed but that rule is overlooked by tenets! LOL

First thing: Check and make sure the pad is free of urine. Pad is relatively inexpensive and we usually advise replacement-padding is not worth cleaning.
Either way placing a thin layer of plastic over the pad can make cleaning of the carpet easier. Some manufacturers created a pad with plastic on top for just this reason.
Note: If the area with plastic on the pad ever floods the water can get trapped between the pad and plastic and never dry leading to microbial growth...very bad :(

Oxidizers are like a peroxide, which destroys odors and usually takes care of the staining too.

Reasons for unsuccessful urine cleaning are
Using a detergent/enzyme that doesn’t work
Not making full contact with the enzyme to every bit of urine
Not allowing the detergent to dwell long enough to work
Not rinsing thoroughly, ie flushing all detergents and residual waste completely out of the carpet
If you have treatment a whole room and the odor keeps getting worse it probably an indicator that you have pushed the urine deep into the pad and subfloor
I would hire a pro to flush everything out and in the future get spots up quick and flush thoroughly

Any idea on how to get old dog urine out of a rug? I've tried everything too the extreme like pouring two whole bottles of white vinegar and giving the entire rug a super scrub(there are many many spots were the dog has urinated). Still the carpet smells horridly bad of urine. If there any magical treatment or cleaner you would recommend I buy to get out this stubborn smell? Or is it a lost cause?

First try rinsing as much of the lose urine and any detergents out of the carpet as possible.
Use a white vinegar/water rinse to do this.
Then pour or spray Sally's 20 clear volume peroxide on each area ( amzn.to/3bUjfVW ). The Sally's 20 will remain working to destroy the odor as long as it is wet. If it dries add more if necessary.

Those machines you can rent from stores that specialize in janitorial equipment. Usually will cost you about 40-50 dollars a day depending on the store. The chemicals are dirt cheap 5-10 dollars at most. you also need some blowers or strong fans. If you have carpet it would make sense to invest in carpet cleaning equipment. Don't pay professional cleaners to do it for you much cheaper do it yourself. Machines can be found slightly used in these same stores a base model with small tank usually runs around 300 dollars. If you want commercial or industrial machines those run 1-2k and up.

If we do white vinegar for pet stains. What portions of water and vinegar should we use? We’ve been using nature’s miracle, but it doesn’t seem to help.

The white vinegar is used to rinse the area after the urine detergent has been applied and allowed to dwell for at least 10-20 minutes.
Rinse with equal parts of warm water and white vinegar (1:1 ratio)
Repeat the enzyme detergent and rinse if the odor persists.

Pour the enzyme so the areas that are contaminated get saturated. Use a wet vacuum to pull residual up after dwell time the repeat same process with white vinegar solution.
This is assuming there is deep penetration of urine. If the urine is only sitting on the top apply enzyme and white vinegar with a spray bottle.
Oh yea, a hardwood floor would be ruined!

If by floor you mean the plywood sub floor or an oak hardwood floor you can pull back all carpet & pad then:
-thoroughly clean the floor with water and a deodorizer.
-allow to dry
-apply polyurathane-we like two coats
-after drying replace carpet & pad
The poly will seal in any odors from the urine.
If the urine left a black mark you can try peroxide to lighten it then the poly.

I don't have one of those heavy devices ,but do have a spot shampooer made for dog accidents. I dread to think of what my floor is going to look like the day the carpet has to come out.!

Depending on the source, amount of urine and how long it has been sitting the time it take to work will vary
