I remember when I first heard the song "Hold The Line" (circa 1978).
I was 15 years old without a driver's license and I was driving my mom's "Gremlin" illegally (sorry guys, but it was the 70s, and we did a lot we weren't supposed to do). And yes, American Motors Corporation actually had a car called the Gremlin.
To be candid, we had so much good music back then, and I mean so much, that it was rare that something would catch your attention. It didn't matter if it was the Eagles, Foreigner, Deep Purple, Rainbow (or any iteration thereof), Journey, Boston, the list goes on for days.
Everyone wanted to be original and great to be noticed.
And Toto was no exception.
So I was driving down a street called Katella, in Anaheim, California, when I first heard that song, and I was utterly blown away!
You're probably saying to yourself right now, how could you possibly remember this? I don't know, but I just do!
So there I was, driving my mom's car illegally, listening to the radio, and a song called "Let The Good Times Roll" by The Cars was on, and for me as a rocker, it wasn't that interesting.
When suddenly, out of nowhere, "Hold The Line" comes on, by some fairly new band called Toto.
I kid you not, I was so blown away, I literally had to pull over to listen to it, and you know what song came on next? Van Halen's "Running With The Devil". Please don't ask me how I know this stuff. I just remember it, that's all I can say!
At that same time, you had Eric Clapton releasing "Lay Down Sally" and you had the Bee Gees releasing their incredible hits from Saturday Night Fever (which, as a rock guy, I wasn't supposed to like, but I loved to the core).
Queen had just released "We Will Rock You", Gerry Rafferty had just released "Baker Street", Abba had just released "Take A Chance On Me", Foreigner had just released "Hot Blooded", Kansas had just released "Dust In The Wind", Styx had just released "Come Sail Away"...
Guys, I could go on and on and on, but I think you get the point!
So, when "Hold The Line" came out, just like every other band, they were pushing for a slot of timeless greatness.
So Nohely and I thought we would throw our hat in the ring to give it our best. It's such a wonderful piece of music and a wonderful piece of time when music was great.

I remember covering this tune in high school. We were a garage cover band and loved rocking this tune. I particularly liked Toto because they had cool keyboard grooves. Great job you guys.

I like some of the runs on there for sure. For me, I have found runs to come out a lot faster when I allow my tongue and jaw to be relaxed even though they do move some.

Very nice. I enjoyed reading your story in the description, too. When it came out my soon to be husband had a mid 60s VW bug with only an AM radio. He put a cassette player in it and we had a Foreigner tape, Boston, and Toto. This is still one of our favorites.

Hi Ken, when you were doing your "What Makes This Singer Great" did you ever do Bobby Kimball? I looked through your videos and I don't see him. I would love to see your opinion of him especially with this song.
In the late 1970's, there was a TV show (WKRP in Cincinnati) about a radio station and Hold the Line was song playing when the early morning DJ discovers that someone has abandoned a baby at the radio station's front doors. This song always makes me think of that, six in the morning, still dark outside, smelling sage and jasmine blooming, feeling.
I hate Toto except for the extended version of Rosanna but this woman is outstanding ❤

I like her voice but I find this song is missing the punch you feel with Bobby Kimball.
