SYND 14 3 77 INTERVIEW WITH UGANDAN PILOT SEEKING POLITICAL ASYLUM

(14 Mar 1977) The British Home Office Has promised a quick decision about asylum for a young Ugandan pilot who fears he will be killed if he returns home. The pilot has been talking in London of atrocities he says he saw in Uganda. Lieutenant Charles Balidawa was sent to Britain for advanced training as Uganda's flying hero after saving the lives of British guests to President Amin's anniversary celebrations. Before leaving Uganda, the 27-year-old pilot was detained for no specific reason by officers of President Idi Amin's "State Research Bureau". He claims that at their camp at Nakaseru he saw victims of brutal torture, but was warned never to reveal what he'd seen. He gave this interview to and told of his experiences.
