Very cool, steve! Thanks for sharing!
You bet!
Very nice coverage Steve .... this is your "sweet spot" in our hobby! A lot are tight on the hardware side of the hobby, but, to have someone that can teach the software side (especially in Linux) is a true asset for us all! Tnx / 73 - KF6IF
Thanks Phil!
🥳 I made it onto a TO video!
Anytime BroJett
The mcHF/RS-918 SDR transceiver has freeDV built into the software. Never used it because I never heard anyone on the band when I used it.
That's pretty cool... just gotta call CQ or setup a sked
I wish the 7300 radio was also free!😞👍😆
Someday the 7300 will be the boat anchor nobody wants...
@@temporarilyoffline haha!😆... that's when I'll get one!😜📻
@@temporarilyoffline LOL.... that made me laugh absolutely.
Thanks for this video. Just about to launch into FreeDv. Just got VarAC working. So FreeDv next. I did a dummy setup run on a laptop to find audio problems. I realise it needs additional audio sound card it appears which I use on other computers anyway. Normally use Linux . Just waiting for a SSD drive to be delivered as upgrading an old laptop for this purpose. Look forward to hooking up at some point. Tnx sign de gw4gja
Now that I have a station built I need to try freeDV. So many cool modes to try. I guess the next step for me is figuring out the best way to pipe computer audio in/out of my rig (ft-891)
There is the signalink, digirig, and the xggcomms cable - all are good ways.
@@temporarilyoffline hey thanks! Was just doing some googling
@@temporarilyoffline just pulled the trigger on the xggcomms cable, the one with the isolating transformers, not a bad deal
@@youtubeaccount931 good deal!
Great to see your "No Fear!" attitude. For those of us who feel a bit technically intimidated and steer more on the practical side, what advantage does FreeDV have over other digital modes (other than the obvious implied in it's name)?
Really, its just a fun thing to play with... maybe a bit lower noise..Noise... it's free... give it a shot, you can't hurt anything!
Thank you for the great video. I have it installed and have not configured yet. Was wondering, is there a way to build a launcher for this type ap stored in home folder?
Linux or windows?
@@temporarilyoffline oops. Ubuntu 20.04
@eddugo3717 yes, search your hard disk for any "*.desktop" file and use the contents of that file as your guide.
@@temporarilyoffline Thank you!
Radio was so much easier as a tech using 28.300-28.500 SSb. Now its wjstx, varac, hf dstar, winlink, fldigi and js8call and running around parks, so shite why not add another. Cant wait to try freedv. Thanks
Exactly! Always something to do!
How does it sound in the radio ?
Good question. I don't actually know what the "code" sounds like. There are some samples of what the decoded speech sounds like towards the end of the video.
Will this work for the X6100
Yes it will
@@temporarilyoffline thank you very much I was wondering what the settings are for it
@@joshhayes9570 just play with it. It would be hard to hurt something. Have you installed FT8 for your X6100 yet? Very similar.
@@temporarilyoffline thank you I think I have the settings right it’s pretty neat yeah I use FT8 with WSJTX, what I am really struggling to find information on is how to set up the X6100 radio for FLDigi and FL rig
I would recommend a PC Headset. You‘ll get better mic audio. Your output level in the video seems to be far too low. The biggest challenge (unfortunately) in FreeDV is, to find a QSO Partner. 😌🤭73, Stefan
Thanks for the tips Stefan!
@Temporarily Offline Ham Radio Had a great experience by monitoring my own signal via WebSdr and testing FreeDV with a local OM (50Km) on 12m. The SSB Signal was stable around S3-S4, without any QSB of course, but nearly in the noisefloor. The audio was very hard to understand. So, really no fun for having a longer QSO😉 We switched to 700d/700e. Amazing! No noises, clear audio and it was a very good decoding possible. For the test via the WebSdr i selected HackGreen in the UK. At that time, same signal quality. Nearly no QSB. I reduced the TX Output successively from 100W to 1W. The decoding ended at around S3 with 5W! The signal wasn‘t really visible on the waterfall anymore.
Of course, the audio is not broadcast (see also below👇 ),but there are amazing improvements since the „2020“ (not only VHF/UHF) wich is also only 1Khz wide.
In times where i hear and see (that‘s where a big high resolution screen is kind of contra productive 😉) more and more „broadcast signals“, with bandwidth’s of 4kHz and more (even DX🫣) it‘s more exciting for me, experimenting with „low bandwith digital HF modes“ like FreeDV.
Have to admit, since i switched to a Flexradio, it‘s much easier to setup (every) digital modes. With my Yaesu i quitted after a while. It was frustrating fiddling with the com ports which were just working very unstable.
Just join the FreeDV Community via the „QSOFinder“ (qso.freedv.org/ to check who‘s online and better „onAir“😉 and get in contact via the chatbox. 73‘
That is great, thanks for all the info!
Very nice, can we make it work on my S-Bitx?
I don't see why not!
