You should wrap the vinyl window material around the wood strips to make the vinyl tighten on itself in the wind. It will minimize the vinyl tearing at the screws when pulled by the wind.
@@thelighthousecenters It looked thick and heavy enough that it will only stretch a little in very high sustained winds, then just shrink back into the warm sun. I'm more worried a bird will fly into it thinking the window is still open.
@@MrWhateverfits we really don’t get birds flying into the lighthouse out there. We get big sea birds and they sit on top and don’t come inside. Anyway if they did run into it, it’s really soft compared to a window. I have a picture window at my house that birds hit everyone once in a while. Sometimes they die and sometimes they get up and fly away. They would definitely survive soft vinyl. thanks!

As a roofer of 35 years, what you’re looking for to get that edging to go back down are rubber roofing plates and screws. The plates are 3” round and screws come in many lengths depending on how deep the wood deck is. A proper rubber roof will have the drip edging plate and screwed down instead of roofing nails, the rubber moving with the heat of the day will put tension on the nails in the drip edge and slowly start to pull it off the building. It takes about 10 years but the nails always fail, it’s one of our main rubber repairs due to saving some money by the roofer, sometimes it was just the way a person was taught as well. If you plate and screw it back down, you’ll at very least need a sealant safe for rubber to cover the screw head and the edges of the plate, proper way would be to cut and put a rubber patch over every plate and screw, but then you get into the expense of rubber, glue, cleaner and primer to do it that way. Hope this helps you out! Can’t wait for the work to really get rolling.
Thanks for the advice on doing it right. We literally didn’t know it was coming up until we went out there and all I could do was put some screws in it. I would like to get the same company that installed it out there to fix it up

Another fun video and I heard you say that phones are important out there. I agree but so are saws , ladders and safety harnesses among other things. As a long time Chesapeake boater I have learned to have two sets of tools one at home and the other on the boat and if you need four screws buy Six because you're probably going to drop two in the water while you're working. Take care and be safe
I was thinking the same thing! Buy a couple of plastic Craftsman tool boxes and stock them with your basic tools such as a hand saw, hack saw, hammers, crescent wrenches, tape measures, screw drivers, etc. And leave them at the Lighthouse, don’t bother taking them away each time. Btw, longer screw bits on your electric drill will be a lot safer. Best to have two of every tool because you will very likely drop a few tools over the side! Hopefully never you guys! Be safe!!
What you are doing is very significant, these historic, structures should be preserved. They represent a period in America when men went down to the sea in wooden ships that with out these lighthouses woul have been smashed on the rocky coasts. These lights also represented a beacon to let these ships know that a port was near ,and safety was within reach, also ships returning from abroad would know they were HOME. You are the modern lighthouse keepers bringing the past to life. Good luck .
Talk about a challenge! I dig this project but don’t think if I pitched the idea of “hey let’s restore a 120 year old structure that’s seen little maintenance. Did I mention is difficult to access, frequently exposed to severe weather and constantly exposed to corrosive spray…” that it would get green lit. Good luck guys! We will be rooting for you.

Awesome project. Thanks for taking it on. And so many helpful comments! Here are three more pieces of insolicited advice: 1. No brainer - like others said get a multitool. There are excellent budget ones - check youtube reviews. Not only will it save when tools are left ashore or dropped in the drink, you'll avoid a bunch of trips up and down the lighthouse steps. 2. Science, place the exterior lights on the east and west sides and tilt the solar panels about 30 degrees to the south. They will perform much better in the winter, and if you leave them outdoors the rain and spray will run off and help keep them clean. Don't know that moving this style of light indoors would work. I take it you want them to shine onto the exterior as they point down not sideways. 3. Semi-educated guess. Birds are not going to see the clear film in the windows and try to fly into the lighthouse or will see their reflections and try to attack. Either way pointy beak impacts might lead to plastic failure. Perhaps a bit of spraypaint on the panels is in order to make them visible and kill reflections while still letting light in. If you need to temporarily replace the existing plastic, translucent plastic sheeting is very durable and probably better.
When you were using the drill over the roof's edge, it was the scariest part of the video. Tie a 550 cord around the drill handle and loop it on the other end so you can attach it to your wrist. But Matt apparently has no fear. Other than that, keep up the excellent work. I can't wait to see how this turns out.

I agree. This whole project is kind of restoring my faith in humanity. At a time when there is so much division in the world, there are so many positive people offering to help or already helping us. These lighthouses belong to everyone and (virtually) everyone wants to see them saved!
I think normal people and humanity are ok for the most part, but somehow people with poor characteristics seem to be running the show and have commandeered a lot of what we experience through the different medias, That is why I consciously try to expose myself to videos like the ones you guys are posting. We can all make the world a little better, perhaps one lighthouse and a time, but more importantly is the setting of an example that others can aspire to. Thanks.@@thelighthousecenters
I watched the first one, then came looking for this assuming you’d be there with a team of 10 keen volunteers or something… I mean that’s a hell of a lot of work! Fair play to you. Will be interesting watching it unfold. Stay safe and keep slapping.
We are working on a custom jack up work barge so we can bring equipment and groups of people out there safely. We can’t do huge projects until then. Stay tuned! We will show the construction of the barge too. Thanks 😊
Only a few weeks ago, I first came across your channel because of the first Wolf Trap video. I was going to suggest that you set up an Amazon wishlist to get some tools donated. But it only works if you BRING THE TOOLS WITH YOU. Great project, guys!
Having spent 1& months on a light house in the gulf of Alaska, I think it would be a blast to restore them I left the light house in 1974 when the coast guard decommissioned it. Now it needs a lot of work.
Please follow along. We are making huge strides behind the scenes. It may seem like a slow start but a year or two from now you are not going to believe what we have accomplished!
Not bad though! Seems like some ladder repairs are in order, since it's going to see a lot of use you want it to be as safe as can be! Really looking forward to seeing the progress on this :)
Excellent video, again! 👍 Installing cheap street lights was great idea, for now. It will look cool, if later all lighthouse outside walls will be illuminated from roof and down.. 😉
Really cool what you guys are doing! This would be a perfect base during a zombie apocalypse! BTW, may I recommend wearing a life jacket, especially while working on the boat/exterior of the lighthouse? Safety first!
The whole time watching your videos I can’t stop thinking about, when is everyone finally jumping into the water from the tower. It looks so tempting fun. 😇
What an incredible project it's going to be. Please let everyone interested, fallow your project from the beginning to the end, we would appreciate it immensely. Thank you.
We are humbled by the fact that people want to watch us. We are working very hard to show everything in an entertaining way. Thank you for the encouragement!
You need a small crane to lift up supplies. When you start bringing a lot of building supplies, a good crane will come in handy. An aluminum one you can lift off and put inside would be good.
I just envy the guys, saving lighthouses is now the best thing, our ancestors built them, poured their souls into them, and you are now restoring these lighthouses, doing the same thing!
We day sail in and around Mobjack/Pt Comfort and Wolf Trap 2-3 x week during warm weather. Very excited to see y’all taking on “our” lighthouse. Thank you!
You are doing a really great job by restoring all these old, and as you tell them, abonded lighthouses. I just saw four of your videos today for the first time and I really appreciate your work as a former architect and now developer in Renewables. Sorry that you live on the other side of the world as I could otherwise support you with solar stuff, you could really us them. But you will manage it. Have a great weekend with friendly greetings from Warsaw/Poland.
If you have excess plastic when fitting the first layer over opening, consider folding it back and rrpeeatingas a second layer (faux double glazing) so that if the first layer fails due to high winds, there is still another layer. Also, when working on internals... slightly warmer.
On the cheapest window - put extra furring strips on both sides horizontally up 1ft, 2ft and 3ft - both sides so the strips can be screwed together to sandwich the middle area of the window and stiffen it! (35 years handyman in California wine country)
Oh dude cool! You guys actually posted a restoration series of the lighthouse after people asked for it. Hope you all are doing okay and having a nice day!
Life time Mathews here 😂 Been in there a time or ten back in the days. Looks pretty much the same inside all these years later. Except it was still lighted in my last adventure there!! If y’all ever need help finding things or glass for the windows gimme a shout. I know everybody 😂 and so do the guys at the marinas y’all use too! Or if ya need somebody to run a saw out there next time 🤘🏼
The handiest tool you can have is a clipboard, two titles: Things I forgot last time and stuff that I should take in addition, like zip ties, stainless steel bailing wire, safety harness, prybars, scrapers, small four leg ladders, platform ladders T--T, work gloves, sunblock, moisturizers, wire brushes (just to clean off areas around screws). dust pan and brooms, masks, extra glasses with floatation, kneeling pads. Pens and markers. I admire your work effort and courage if not your common sense You might think of setting up a tripod lift crane for safer loading and unloading. There is a kind of plumbing, hardens with water contact, tape wrap you could beef up those ladder rungs with.
The editing in this one was way better than the last one. My only major critique is that not much happened in the video. The entire thing could have been cut to less than ten minutes without losing any information. I wonder when this project is supposed to be finished, but I guess the pace must accelerate somewhat at some point in the future when the basics are done. It's wild to see people sail out there for such little work.
There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes to design and build a barge/dock. Once that happens we can bring out a real crew and the whole thing will accelerate. We are also working on 2 other lighthouses. It takes time to edit the videos. Please be patient. We are just getting started and it’s going to get crazy with content! Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes we are developing a consistent editing style that is getting better with each video. There will be many more!
I've been enjoying following these videos. I'm curious, is there anything you have to maintain in the foundation of the lighthouse under the water? How far down does it go?
The caisson is an iron shell that is filled with concrete. The water is about 18 feet deep and it extends another 12 feet below the sea floor, so it is kind of indestructible. We will show it in a future video using and underwater drone 😁
Sorry for your loss. After we get the lighthouses renovated and a dock built with a boat lift, we intend to offer tours, host events and small weddings. Please follow to see it happen 😊
I wish we had someone like y’all down hear in Mobile Bay, we have two lighthouses that as fair as I know are maintained by the Coast Guard. But I think they should be preserved because both of them played a big role in the history of our port. Can’t wait to see y’all’s work and keep up the good work!
Thank you! Maybe someday we will expand into other parts of the country but for now we are doing three lighthouses in the Chesapeake Bay and hopefully more 😊
Sometimes it's just about stopping future damage. First thing I do when restoring a boat is get a cover for it. Stops future damage from rain, elements and such and also gives me a dry space to store things.
You made my day! You wouldn’t believe what we have planned! This year, I am cutting back on my regular job at the sandblast and paint shop to focus on this full time and then things will really accelerate. Thanks for the sub 😊
Looks like you will need a few well loaded carrier ships full of supplies to get enough material to fix that lighthouse up... But video everything, I'll surely watch... Thumbs Up!
should probably use a DRIVER to run in screws instead of a drill in stiuations like at 14:20 they are gennerally shorter and better suited for the job you may also know them as a 1/4 inch hex Impact.
Sarcasm detected lol We are industrial painters so we have skills for that. We will bring out pros for all phases of the real restoration work. Certified plumber will be doing the plumbing work at Hooper next. Then we will have facilities to bring out more people😁
@@thelighthousecenters I am actually very excited to see all the work y'all will be doing on this lighthouse. Your perseverance is encouraging. You guys have taken on an awesome task.

Thanks. That’s good advice.
The Government should pay heed to such historical and useful structures. You people are doing a great work.
What a great and interesting project. I love lighthouses. Good luck, I hope the weather is kind..😊
It’s not 😂 but that will make for some interesting videos too!
That lighthouse could be a glorious place to stay ... the views will be unimaginably beautiful!!
Long time subscriber here LOL. Gotta love watching something interesting and getting an unexpected comedy show. Keep up the good work (and editing)!!!! Seriously though, love all of it.
love the comment on this video! everyone is so kind, offering help and expertise... sadly i do not have 30 years of roofing experience or else to offer. but i love this project already, so excited for the process!
thanks for posting :)
Every time I catch an episode I think of the guys playing Dayz and building a base haha. its awesome what you guys are doing seriously, GL fellas
lol it’s kind of like that 😂
From the UK, I really must take my hat off to you guys, I'll follow you now and wish you all the best.
Cheers
Rob
I think it’s pretty awesome what you are doing I’d love to do that. And just be able to hang out all comfortable after restoration in a good storm.
Thanks 😊
@@thelighthousecenters awesome, sounds great! Looking forward to this going viral haha
Only a few weeks ago, I first came across your channel because of the first Wolf Trap video. I rewatched every video and discovered how interesting lighthouses actually are, especially these historic ones. I really like your concept and the style of the videos, I think it's perfect.
It must feel very special to work there, so the videos have a special vibe which I really enjoy.
I'm looking forward to the next videos!
Wishing you all the best
a fairly new subscriber from Germany
Welcome aboard! Thank you for the kind words. Yes we are honored to have this mission and we are thrilled to have your support from Deutschland!
1am 🇬🇧 I’ve watched two videos in a row from a random recommendation algorithm . I’m hooked. Invested in lighthouses now! and the editing is brilliant. Very funny. Keep up the good work 🙌🏻
Subscribed!
Brits appreciate the humor! Another Starbucks for Thomas for mentioning the editing 😁 Thank you!
So excited to see this video pop up. Looking forward to watching this lighthouse get rebuilt. Love see old things get brought back to life so to speak. Peace ✌ and Love ❤.
I was going to suggest that you set up an Amazon wishlist to get some tools donated. But it only works if you BRING THE TOOLS WITH YOU. Great project, guys!
Hey that’s a cool idea! Mental note: ACTUALLY BRING THE TOOLS
Having spent 1& months on a light house in the gulf of Alaska, I think it would be a blast to restore them I left the light house in 1974 when the coast guard decommissioned it. Now it needs a lot of work.
I like that we get to see the actual steps you are taking to restore this place, excited to follow along for the next few years :)
Correct. a dodgy handrail or ladder is worse than no ladder at all
Excellent video, again! 👍
Installing cheap street lights was great idea, for now.
Grow house, band practice, muffin kitchen, combo deluxe.
Maybe with a side of fishing .
The whole time watching your videos I can’t stop thinking about, when is everyone finally jumping into the water from the tower. It looks so tempting fun. 😇
I need a place like this the neighbors are the perfect distance away
I also like the sound of the 80mph wind
What an incredible project it's going to be. Please let everyone interested, fallow your project from the beginning to the end, we would appreciate it immensely.
Thank you.
We are humbled by the fact that people want to watch us. We are working very hard to show everything in an entertaining way. Thank you for the encouragement!
Need to find a way to put a wood stove in there for the cold periods. Would be awesome to be in during those times!
You need a small crane to lift up supplies. When you start bringing a lot of building supplies, a good crane will come in handy. An aluminum one you can lift off and put inside would be good.
We are working on plans to build a jack up barge with a crane! Stay tuned 😊
You could use some help from a handyman, maybe I could help you sometime when I get to visit my brother
I just envy the guys, saving lighthouses is now the best thing, our ancestors built them, poured their souls into them, and you are now restoring these lighthouses, doing the same thing!
Yes. You get it! Thanks 😊
Whoever does the editing is great and funny.
Welp. Thomas just earned another Starbucks!
We day sail in and around Mobjack/Pt Comfort and Wolf Trap 2-3 x week during warm weather. Very excited to see y’all taking on “our” lighthouse. Thank you!
Please say hello if you see us out there!
Nerves of steel…😱 Good luck on your rescue… 17:14
You are doing a really great job by restoring all these old, and as you tell them, abonded lighthouses. I just saw four of your videos today for the first time and I really appreciate your work as a former architect and now developer in Renewables. Sorry that you live on the other side of the world as I could otherwise support you with solar stuff, you could really us them. But you will manage it. Have a great weekend with friendly greetings from Warsaw/Poland.
Thank you friend! We really appreciate your support and kind words from Poland! 😊
If you have excess plastic when fitting the first layer over opening, consider folding it back and rrpeeatingas a second layer (faux double glazing) so that if the first layer fails due to high winds, there is still another layer. Also, when working on internals... slightly warmer.
Such a massive undertaking, but an important mission, great job!
siting in my home in London England im subscribing to this channel just to see how this go's
Thank you friend 😁 Cheers!
Just found this channel. I love lighthouses, and I love you guys! Thanks for an entertaining video!
Thanks! There is much more to come 😊
Love watching your work! Even if it feeds my fear of heights, especially on the roof :p
I tried not to look down 😅
Claiming the "not bad though" energy as my new personality. This man is a glass half full kinda guy. I like it
😂 ❤️
On the cheapest window - put extra furring strips on both sides horizontally up 1ft, 2ft and 3ft - both sides so the strips can be screwed together to sandwich the middle area of the window and stiffen it! (35 years handyman in California wine country)
How much of that wine have you been drinking? Just kidding 😁 That’s a good idea!
The birds will have the vinal ripped in short order.
@@hartstudebakerkid It'll take a bit to do that. I think that that lovely 10mil stuff.
The editing is gold in these videos. 😄
Another Starbucks for our editor Thomas 🧋 😳 Thanks 😂
Agrees, I was biting my nails when he was cutting with that knife so close to his leg, and especially when he was out on the edge of that roof
Love these lighthouses y’all are restoring!!! I would like to stay in one!! Even if it’s a night!
This is edited so well!
No slap counter, 0/10.
@@thelighthousecenters Interesting. Looking forward to that video!
Love the videos, want to see this when it’s properly done up and finished.
Always had a thing for lighthouses. My late husband and I got married at the Point Arena Lighthouse in Northern California.
What a great channel with likable people, great content, funny editting, and most importantly, a worthy cause. Easy sub.
You made my day! You wouldn’t believe what we have planned! This year, I am cutting back on my regular job at the sandblast and paint shop to focus on this full time and then things will really accelerate. Thanks for the sub 😊
First rule of box cutters : Never cut towards your junk .
Aye Karumba!
"Cut towards your chum, not towards your thumb!" 😂
I wonder if putting the outdoor lights inside the lantern panes will protect them better (and they can still charge).
We thought of that. Probably sometime in the future. Thanks.
Alright I'm hooked. The editing is good and content is good. Not bad!
2 goods + 1 not bad = great! Thanks!
Good start. Will be watching your progress with great interest. Remember the saw. 👍
We will, but will probably forget something else lol
@@thelighthousecenters That is always the way. The suggestion to keep a selection of tools out there seems like a good one!
thats alot of lead paint guys mask are needed or you wont be breathing to good
Really I’m sure they never thought about that luckily they got you to save the day 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Way way blown out of proportion by government know nothings
@@davidmotter5140 Did you enjoy eating paint chips as a child?
@@davidmotter5140 lol good thing you're not one of them
Lead has little effect on your breathing. It causes neurological damage. You might be thinking of asbestos or silicates.
Great job, looking forward to more of the restoration!
They should make longer restoration shows and electric winch to lift stuff of boat
We will! This was literally our first day out on this lighthouse. Please follow!
I cant wait to see what progress you get up to over the next few years! ☺️ My new favorite channel!
Thanks! BIG things are coming!
You might want to consider wearing a harness and tether when working so close to the edge on the roof. Safety first.
Props to the Editor, love his/her humor.
Bam! One more Starbucks for Thomas!
Pre-drill a hole before running in the screw, you won't have to fight so hard, just use a general "porpoise" 1/8 inch drill bit.
Looks like you will need a few well loaded carrier ships full of supplies to get enough material to fix that lighthouse up... But video everything, I'll surely watch... Thumbs Up!
Thank you for supporting the mission! 😊
should probably use a DRIVER to run in screws instead of a drill in stiuations like at 14:20 they are gennerally shorter and better suited for the job you may also know them as a 1/4 inch hex Impact.
You guys have some mad wood working skills.
You need to install bird spikes around the solar panels to keep the panels clear.
Loving these videos ! The editing of them is hilarious , great work.
😁
Please invest in a quality harnace or two when you are working outside.
Thanks to YT algorithm for recommend this channel - I like you videos, guys!
Welcome aboard! Thank you for the support. We have huge plans for this year!
And so it begins...👍
Yes it does 😁 Let’s GOOOOOOO!!!
More tools of all types might come in handy. Think I'd fix the safety rails pretty soon. I always fancied living in a lighthouse. As long as it was safe and watertight.
You guys need a barge you can tie up and have all of your stuff (workshop, tools, etc) permanently out there.
Keep up the good work, Lighthouse Centers!
I could totally live out there alone
Ganga plants, big azz stereo, lots of baking, fishing, drum set, couple cats. lol
@@NoNORADon911 well, the weed DEFINITELY...
@@thatcanadianchick7589 Guys would boat up too you like you are Repunzal lol
You guys give me the Willies being on the outside doing the windows and the edge of the walk way. Seriously my stomach would give a jump 😮😮😮😮😮
Sorry, I’ve been working on tall structures my whole life so I really didn’t think about it 😁
I’m gonna put a codicil in my Last Will & Testament & leave you guys $10,000. Here’s hoping you don’t get it all too soon.
But for real, what you’re doing gives me hope, there’s actually a few of you in your generation who CARE about Maritime History & are willing to preserve it.
Good 👍🏻 damn work you guys.
Btw: do you have a site where we can donate now, BEFORE we croak?
I saw the video and recognized the lighthouse. I sailed by this lighthouse in 2020! Interesting to see media on it!
Can you set up an Amazon wish list so people watching could help by buying some of the needed supplies, tools, solar panels, lights etc??
Please get a impact driver for putting in screws. They work so much better than using a drill. Great video BTW and first time watcher and now subscribed :) Keep up the good work.
You are right. I normally use one. Just grabbed some stuff to bring out to the lighthouse that day. Thanks for the support! Big things coming in 2024!
I hope you get the railing fixed soon. As well as get a safety harness when working on the roof. You were pegging my risk meter.
Just discovered this channel a couple of weeks ago. Very interesting work and the humor and editing are truly entertaining. Definitely subbing from here in South Korea.
South Korea??? Amazing! We are honored. Thanks!
