The National Intelligence Service revealed that North Korea is intensifying its surveillance on South Korean embassies in countries like China, and in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. This is believed to be linked to a surge in defections by high-ranking North Koreans who were stranded abroad due to the pandemic and now fear repercussions upon returning home. The NIS suspects that North Korean embassy officials might be fabricating reports to shift blame for defections onto external factors, potentially paving the way for retaliatory actions against South Korean embassy staff.
