- hello everyone. as many of you i have watched ATLA many times and enjoyed this song. but there wasn't really any good covers of the song. so i did a bit of audio editing to make it much more clear and listenable. it loops 3 times. i hope you all enjoy.

btw you must have some pretty nifty skills in making this In only an hour! id be still stuck on figuring out which pictures to use then the font of the characters etc
but I guess it is a really simple task when you break down...

The combination of the in-universe context (Iroh mourning his dead son) and the real-life circumstances (Mako dying from cancer and being faced with his own mortality) topped with this being the last dialogue Mako recorded for the show adds up to this being impossible to listen to without breaking down in tears.

- the drawing of Iroh’s son in the episode was inspired by a young picture of Mako
- Greg Baldwin (who took over the voice of Iroh after Mako died), when asked to sing this song at functions would politely refuse, saying, “it was Mako’s song.”
- translation of the words on the picture of Iroh’s son “To General Iroh, see you after we win the war. Your loyal son, Lu Ten.”
P.S. when I first watched this series for the first time ever while in college, I balled during this scene.

@@ZoneGoated no he wasn't. Mako was crying over his own son and loss in his life there is an interview where it's discussed in writing. He wrote leaves from the vine himself a poem of many he wrote in his lifetime. Yes he also had cancer but he wasn't crying over that. It's explicitly not true.

I watched this idolising uncle iroh , Now at my age I seek to be the uncle iroh in my younger friends/students lives. Thank mako uncle mako.. uncle iroh

And greg, he did a wonderful job after mako's passing and always idolizes mako in every interaction as iroh by saying the 2nd or replacement of mako, keeping his memory alive for years to come ❤️❤️😭😭😭

The show makes it really easy to hate the fire nation but Iroh shows that there are good people even in the worst places that punish sympathy and reward cruelty. Such a great characte

Uncle Iroh quickly became my favorite. I didn’t see Last Airbender till I was in my late teens. Lost my grandpa to cancer and knowing Mako also had cancer made this scene hit hard.

I was young when I watched this episode of Avatar. I guess that perfect age, I still remember. The pain I felt from it and still do. Now just learning of Mako, adding more to it. This is humanity, and it's beautiful.

Yes but Greg was the perfect replacement. While it wasn’t the same as before emotionally Greg’s performance was almost indistinguishable from mako. I didn’t realize there was a change until at least 7 years ago during my 3rd or 4th re run through all the episodes. Greg replaced other mako characters as well with such respect and pride each time. In every interview and q&a at cons he always refers to himself as either replacement, secondary, or replacement Iroh. The biggest and most heart wrenching thing about Mako is that this song was the final thing he recorded for the last airbender, which you can hear in the raw emotion and true sorrow/reflection in his voice throughout the song.

Not even going to lie rn, Iroh was like the 3rd best character in the show. He was such a wise man ngl, wish he had stayed to watch the fandom grow. By every definition of "filler episode" I've seen, Tales from Ba Sngse is one. But it's one of the best episodes of the series. Period. So good that I have never been comfortable with acknowledging that it is, technically, filler. So beautiful.

Even though I never saw the series I always loved this song, it's Mako's final performance and song, his farewell, I hope Mako's doing well in the next life.

Uncle Iroh was one of my favorite characters on Avatar the last Airbender and when he sung the song in the show it made me cry so much because of my brother died a year ago from cancer.
