    *Uncle Iroh:* 'You sound like my nephew. Always thinking you need to do things on your own, without anyone's support. There is nothing wrong with letting people who love you help you. Not that I love you, I just met you.'
    *Toph:* 'So where is your nephew?'
    *Uncle Iroh:* 'I have been tracking him actually... His life has recently changed and is going through very difficult times. He is trying to figure out who he is, and he went away.'
    *Toph:* 'So, now you're following him...'
    *Uncle Iroh:* 'I know he doesn't want me around right now. But if he needs me, I'll be there...'

      Yeah it wasn't Nickelodeon. It was the actual team of creators that Nickelodeon payed to make it. Mako Imawatsu voiced Iroh up until "The Tale of Iroh", passing away from cancer not long after. His understudy, Greg Baldwin, would take up the role from there till the end of the series. Baldwin has said that he often gets requests from fans to sing "Leaves From The Vine." Baldwin always refuses, saying that it is Mako's song to sing, and he won't do it.

      So I was thinking about that letter. We see flashbacks of Zuko, Lu Ten, and Iroh on Ember Island and it makes him seem like a joyful, fun father/uncle. But this letter makes it seem like Iroh and Lu Ten’s relationship was extremely formal, barely any emotion conveyed in it. I may be reading it wrong 🤷‍♂️

    • @teenie9367
      @teenie9367 4 роки тому +83

      maxmitch96, I don’t think their relationship was formal because Iroh is incredibly sad and informal about his sadness, which he wouldn’t do if he were to honor his son’s memory, but either way seems right and if you’re correct that’d be pretty rad to see

    • @nickyson4life
      @nickyson4life 4 роки тому +154

      Maxmitch96: I read the letter as a loyal son wanting to do his father proud. "General Iroh" and "Uncle Iroh" were two different people. I imagine he was strict as a fire nation general since that was the mainstream attitude at the time, but you wouldnt see a son who hates their father write them this letter.
      I feel Lu Ten was an admirable bender who really made "General Iroh" proud, and though they may not have had the loving relationship Zuko and Iroh had I can definitely see a more formal General Iroh being outspoken and proud of his accomplished son, probably often bragging how the fire nation was in good hands with him next in line and Lu Ten after.
      And then that all changed when Lu Ten died. His talented accomplished son died, and we know what happened from there.
      I think Irohs sadness doesnt stem from his son being "gone" gone. He has had time to accept that. I feel he is sad because he never had the time to help him down a different path, and loved him in a way he would have really wanted to love his son (the way he loves Zuko) and not the traditional fire nation esteemed father/esteemed son relationship they probably did have.
      I dont see Iroh being a bad father in any way, or having a strictly formal relationship with any of his family. I do see him being more strict, and "fire nationy" but I feel behind closed doors Iroh was more of a chilled father then some others were.
      Still the values him and Lu Ten held during their time together probably affected Iroh in his later years. No matter how much he learned and redeemed himself, guided and taught others, he could never truly help Lu Ten any further then carrying his memory with him.

      This show was a experience. I still don't think I've ever found a piece of media with character writing as consistently good as avatar, and I've always been a very avid reader, so it's not from lack of competition.

    • @Drag0nvil
      @Drag0nvil Рік тому

      @@Parmesan_Seeker what sets ATLA appart is the consistency of its quality.
      There's several works like the Sword of Truth where in the author seems to just reach out to you and share his philosophy in a brilliant way but those moments are rather rare. ATLA does it more consistently it feels like. It's odd that a kid show does such a great job in not in telling a story. But also sharing deeper meanings like the impact of war and such.
      Another story from an odd angle that turned out to be a gift that kept on giving was the web novel:
      A practical guide to evil
      Do wrong right
      It's available on WordPress for anyone interesting, it starts a bit crude but as the story grows, the author does too. And as the author grows so does the world building leading up to a brilliant conclusion. Since you claim to be an avid reader I would definitely recommend.

    My grandma passed this morning. Not like blood grandma, but someone who I looked after for quite some time, and she in turn looked after me. When we first met 7 years ago, I had nothing to my name but a bag of clothes, and a history of partying, drinking, and do nothings.
    I'm here 7 years later with my wife, my son, and so much more than I could've ever dreamed of owning. I got here because despite who I was then, Grandma took a bet on me. She walked with me, guided me. Helped me restore my relationship with my parents. To me, she was my Uncle Iroh.
    My favorite memories of her where when we'd wake early, and I'd fix her a bagel and tea, and then myself some tea. And we would just talk. Morning after morning we'd talk.
    Now everytime I drink tea, ill think of her.
    I love you grandma. And I'll miss you.

    For additional feels, play at 0.75x speed
    0:00 A door opens, and we see Zuko’s face, looking downcast. He sighs deeply and enters the room.
    0:08 Cut to the bed, where Iroh is laying, looking weary and frail.
    0:16 Iroh’s eyes open, and he looks over at his nephew, smiling. He beckons Zuko to sit by his bedside. His nephew does so, looking at his beloved uncle with despair as he takes his hand.
    0:32 Iroh squeezes Zuko’s hand tightly. Zuko smiles slightly, squeezing Iroh’s hand in return. They look at each other lovingly, and an understanding passes between them. Iroh smiles once more, and closes his eyes, a peaceful look on his face.
    0:47 Fade to a scene of Zuko, standing at the top of the steps of the courtyard of the Fire Nation palace, a coffin to his side. He is wearing white funeral clothing, and struggles to hold back tears.
    1:02 The camera pans across the crowd gathered, showing that people from all four nations have come together to mourn Iroh.
    1:10 Aang and the rest of the Gaang are shown standing next to Zuko. The Avatar glances at the Fire Lord, giving him a reassuring look.
    1:17 The crowd has dispersed, and Zuko stands with only his friends. Wordlessly, they all embrace him as he begins crying.
    1:32 Cut to Zuko kneeling beneath a tree, alone. He places a portrait of Iroh beneath the tree and lights two sticks of incense. Tears roll down his face as he looks at the portrait.
    1:47 He starts to sing. “Leaves from the vine. Falling so slow, like fragile, tiny shells, drifting in the foam.”
    2:02 Zuko continues singing as the camera pans upward, following the trail of incense smoke. The screen turns bright yellow for a moment, then fades into a shot of the spirit world. Iroh’s face emerges at the top of a verdant green hill, and he smiles happily. “Comes marching home”
    2:17 Cut to a shot of Iroh gathered around a table with spirits, all chatting happily and laughing while he pours them tea.
    2:33 Iroh is alone again, still sitting at his table. He takes a sip of tea and exhales deeply, setting down his cup and smiling serenely to himself.
    2:47 Something out-of-frame catches his eye, and he turns to look. He smiles as he sees what it is, tears starting to stream down his face. He stands and turns toward it.
    2:57 A close-up of Iroh’s tearful, smiling face.
    3:00 The camera cuts to the approaching figure, revealing him to be Lu Ten, as he finally comes marching home.

I didnt understand the song then but now that I am going to be a full fledged adult...I'm scared. But this song (especially this version) helps me realize its ok to be scared of growing up. It's ok to say goodbye to childhood. I can always revisit it later. When I have the time. Growing up is what we make of it. He was a prolific actor over the life of his career, doing what he loved until the day he could no longer. He was also an activist working to further Asian-American actors ability to work beyond stereotyped casting, and helped create the East West Players in 1965. I adore the way it starts bare, picks up more and more as layers of instruments are added, and then becomes bare and poignant before lifting once more to feel full again. How each instrument adds its own emotion and holds its own significance in the full picture this song is painting leaves me in awe. I love the original version obviously, Mako’s voice and the emotion it holds, the softness of it and it’s brokenness, yet how it portrays a searingly beautiful sense of hope, but I feel this instrumental does well to hold its own, it manages to convey that same level of emotion and depth without ever needing words. It’s flow is full of both heartbreaking grief and overflowing hope. The lack of words allows you to fill that space with your emotions, it allows your thoughts to flow and ebb with the notes and honestly, I already thought this was one of the most beautifully composed songs ever but this orchestral version takes it to an entirely new level. Absolutely stunning

      He says this after spending the entire day helping the people of the city he lost his son to. One of the many reasons people love Uncle Iroh.

      Nah, he's zuko's dad for sure. That's a title you earn, not one you gain from having a kid.

    I’m a nurse and some shifts are just…hard. I often bottle things up, the things my patients go through shatter my heart, it’s a privilege to help them. This helped remind me to just cry and let it out. It helped soften my heart again in the face of everything the healthcare system throws at us. Thank you❤ I grew up with this show, so it’s just perfect

    I’m a 15 year old boy from NSW Australia, and I recently watched Avatar for the first time since it came out on Netflix, I guess I’m part of the “resurgence” as I’ve heard people call it, And holy shit man... what a beautiful show, can’t believe I’ve been missing out on this
