- Welcome to the channel!
Bourbon with the Boys is about sharing bourbon, stories, and experiences with those people that are close to you. This is a place where we value good friendships and good bourbon and I am going to talk about my journey through the bourbon world as I learn and experience new bottles and new places along the way.
Today's discussion is about several bottles I was excited about that ended up in pure disappointment. I would not buy these bottles again.
Green River needs another try. It easily spanks a lot of $60+ bottles. One of my favorites
You are wrong on the green river wheated!! I think you did get a messed up bottle.
Agree. He should write the distillery and request a replacement
That's a great bottle
Castle and key is garbage. I was so excited to find batch 1 and 2. I keep batch 1 because it looks cool. Gave away batch 2
I visited Town Branch (Alltech Lexington) last week and enjoyed the true cask enough to buy a bottle - batch 007.
I’d give the green river another try it’s 35 and yes it had a cork issue. The others aren’t bottles I’m remotely interested in. I’m not a BT chaser just to many other brands out there that are way better and easy to find. Good luck on your journey.
I got an old elk once that the cap isn't even that tight, like it seals 0%. Fortunately it tastes fine, I think the plastic shrink seal saved it.
I just bought a store pick bottle of Town Branch 2 weeks ago. Barrel #2163A, Lot# 15G12, 111.8 proof and it has a wonderful nose and is a great sip. Very enjoyable for me. The store owner told me that this particular barrel was being a fast mover.
Great video. Just subscribed. 😅 you got me at Stink bug....
I agree with some of the other comments, it sounds like the C&K had cork taint. I’ve not had C&K, but the odors you described sound like a wine in a bottle with a bad cork.
I definitely agree on the Ocean's, worst bottle I own.
Well I guess I’m happy that I can’t relate to any of these since I don’t own any. Thanks for the heads up. Cheers
That B Roll with the composition paper is STRAIGHT FIRE 🔥
😭😭😭
You wanna make me an intro?
I wasn’t being sarcastic. I actually think it’s amazing. So no…don’t change it!
Haha I was thinking that was the next thing needing an upgrade but maybe I will keep it
I bought green river wheated after seeing it reviewed a lot and i got the same opinion. Its my worst bottle by far for whatever reason. Ill have to check the cork.
I agree with every one of the bottles you are choosing not to buy again!
I have to agree with you on that particular batch of Castle & Key. I myself did not find it appealing at all. Their Restoration Rye and Wheated options are pretty good. I just visited the distillery a couple of weeks ago and it is a beautiful property. The Ocean's Voyages are terrible. My first try with it was Voyage 4 and it was putrid. I had it many years ago so I have never had another Jefferson's product until my last trip to Louisville. I did a flight and added the Twin Oaked expression and that was fantastic. I may buy my own bottle of that and just stay away from the Voyage options. I have not had any luck enjoying anything distilled in Texas. So far I am 0/9. I have a bottle of Still Austin Cask Strength to open. Hopefully they can redeem TX for me. Good luck on your channel.
I have tried the still Austin cask strength stuff and thought it was phenomenal! Hope you enjoy yours!
Thinking about it, MOST of the whiskeys I've bought over the years I wouldn't buy again. Now, most weren't terrible, just not memorable (however, some -- I'm talking to you, Blanton's! -- were bad). Wife and I have done blind tastings over the past few years; pretty much zero correlation between price/rarity and how much we like them.
100% agree there!
Try the green river again, ive had 10 bottles of them (barrel, borubon, wheated and rye)
i agree blantons sucks. Great list.
I’m enjoying my Green River Wheated sorry about your experience. I can’t seem to like the finish on Wild Turkey 101. I know everyone else likes it but that finish is really bitter.
I think you may have had a bad bottle. I’ve polished off about 4-5 of them and I specifically remember one of mine not tasting great
Jefferson's Double Oak Single Barrel is delicious. And anything from Brown-Forman is good. And yes I couldn't finish the Green River Wheated either. Cool bottle but it's not that good.
That's weird as my bottle of GR wheated is great
Agreed
I tried Gunnar's Wheated and it was a stink Bug.
Old Elk has same issue with cork
The cork on Old Elk bottles are way too loose
Agree on that C&K! Nasty
I bought a bottle of Jefferson's a couple years back. Pre-Ocean version. It was ok, nothing outstanding. Wouldn't buy it again.
Town Branch gave me a stomach ache every time
Never buy Total Wine & More recommended bottles.
I have a bottle of the rye recipe Green River Bourbon and I think it is a great all around bourbon... been wanting to try the wheated, so hope it WAS a bad bottle (I had an Eagle Rare that was so bitter, so bad batch maybe?)... the Castle & Key - well I have two bottles from two batches (I think a 2022 number 3 and a 2023 number 1) and both are unopened. I was at C&K back in October and what I sampled wasn't good. No master distiller at the time and "each batch is different" doesn't really fly with me. Never heard of the Hancock Reserve (not available here in Ohio) BUT at 88.9 proof, I would pass anyways...
Castle and Key is just terrible overall
Early times not working for me!
so your castle & key was tainted. Dont get me wrong, its not a good bourbon to begin with, but any bottle can be tainted or "corked" as they say in the wine world. It smells like a poop filled decaying swamp. I've had stuff from buffalo trace that smells and tastes like this... just a tainted bottle.
Drink what bourbon you like. Don’t let influencers sway your tastes. Go to a bar and try a bunch before you purchase bottles.
Disagree on the Hancock’s. I would add Balcones Texas whisky.
Agreed, not a fan of that stuff either
You disagree that $90 is too much for the Hancock?
@@alexvlach4897 $80-90 is a fair secondary price. It’s a decent bottle and nearly indistinguishable from Elmer at a much lower price.
Old grand bonded. The main flavor is just bad.
Interesting, I had heard mixed reviews on that one!
*Cough* Jefferson's Ocean *Cough*
Typed this at the beginning of the video. Glad to see you agreed.
$30 for 750 ml is my price limit. If I do not like it, no big loss. Some that you do not like might be selling well in Asia, or with locals with a very different taste profile.
If $30 is your limit , you’re missing out on the best bourbons in the world. Increase your limit to $75. Also try a pour before you buy so there won’t be any chance that you are disappointed
Russell's Reserve 10 year tastes like cough syrup to me, in a bad way.
Thats my favorite
That cherry candy finish is precisely the flavor profile i look for in a bourbon. To each his own i guess...
😂
Buffalo Trace is one I wouldn't buy again. I heard about the hype and bought a bottle and the first taste was pretty bad. I've had it for quite a few months now and it's okay for an Old Fashion but even for a mixer it's a pretty bad taste for me.
Basil Hayden dark rye is the best old fashion you could ever have imo.
Uncle Nearest 1884. One note not very flavorful
