    This is relatively common when people forget to ventilate their bilge before starting their engine. One cup of gas vaporized in a bilge is equal to 16 sticks of dynamite, If I remember my training correctly. I have seen this before.

      Virtually every vessel has a warning label near the key/starter. Even mine has one, and it’s a diesel.

      The safest but extremely inconvenient practice is to go below and do a “sniff test” to detect odors after fueling.

      Happens more often than you would think. It’s from gas fumes collecting in enclosed spaces without adequate ventilation.

    "I was screaming, screaming, screaming".....ugh, the worst kind of people in a disaster. I'm glad I'm the type that stays calm and immediately starts looking for a solution. I'll never understand people that just scream and scream and scream like that's ever going to help the situation. As a matter of fact it just makes things worse.

    did they forget to hit the button that expels the gas vapors inside the engine compartment if it was inboard engine?
    older generation boats used to have them. always flipped it for a few minutes before starting the inboard engines.

      ALL engines with inboard engines have bilge blowers, and they MUST be used during fueling and any time you’re going to start the engine.

    Venting the engine compartment for at least one minute before starting is S.O.P. I would wager this was not done.

      probably gas fumes in the engine compartment..
      without a fan they ignite when you turn on the engine again

      Bilge blowers remove the gas fumes in the lower hull. Any spark near the boat can ignite the boat and fuel tanks. 37' boat probably had 200 or more gallons of fuel.

      it very much sounds like he went into it prepared to talk about a crazy video of an explosion where no one was hurt and was blindsided live on air by the reports of injuries and the words "deceased unfortunately", ultimately making the whole report sound very insensitive.

      @@Valeriejeanne-o8o Absolutely.. Also just before the boom.. looks like there were pumps right there too. May have just fueled up. The way the deck separated is a very strong indication of bilge fumes.

    Never use gas engines or generators on a large inboard boat. Diesel is much,much more safe. This was more than likely a gasoline leak and they didn't use their blowers properly

      My parent’s old Glastron inboard/outboard had a Volvo engine. The first thing he always did was use that blower for at least a minute before cranking the engine. Fumes build-up under the engine casing quickly.

    I get the impression that most of this was put together without realizing there was a death involved and that the anchor was under the impression that no one was seriously hurt until he was literally reading the end of the statement there on tv. the report itself seems to imply that the missing person was found alive. someone seriously failed at their job. rushed reporting and the whole thing comes across as extremely insensitive.

    One of two things likely happened. 1. They didn't turn everything off before fueling, and a spark ignited the gas fumes, which caused the guel tank below to blow. Or 2. They had fueled up, but never turned on the blower to clear any fumes before attempting to start the engine.

      It's 2. That's a busy dock and it's really well kept; I doubt it's that. Besides, a spark doesn't do anything without the fumes.

      If some of the gas wasn't going into the tank, the bilge pump could have kicked on and caused it.

    Proof of regular boat maintenance and daily inspection before use (check list) is crucial to the boat safety industry... You cannot forget to ventilate the bilge or make sure it even works before starting the engine and heading out on the water... Airplanes have a very strict check before engine starting and taking to the air. Maybe this concept should be MANDATORY for the boating industry as well...

    You can literally see the guy in black fly up and into the water. He was dead before impact for sure. The explosion killed him no doubt. He was lifeless in the air.

    Lot of people don't know anything about their boats they just buy them and expect to run them. Prolly didn't turn on the blowers before trying to start the engines or possibly having a bar B Que with propane or some other such mistake.

    Typical bilge explosion.. didn’t purge the fumes prior to firing up the engine. Very dangerous situation, but an unfortunately common mistake.

    I’m telling y’all if you got a inboard or a inboard outboard boat and you fuel up sit for at least 5 min after the fuel cap back on then another 5 mins with blowers on before you hit key boats and jet skis are way more dangerous then ppl will ever know when comes to fuel vapor
