did they forget to hit the button that expels the gas vapors inside the engine compartment if it was inboard engine? older generation boats used to have them. always flipped it for a few minutes before starting the inboard engines.
Bilge blowers remove the gas fumes in the lower hull. Any spark near the boat can ignite the boat and fuel tanks. 37' boat probably had 200 or more gallons of fuel.

Never use gas engines or generators on a large inboard boat. Diesel is much,much more safe. This was more than likely a gasoline leak and they didn't use their blowers properly

My parent’s old Glastron inboard/outboard had a Volvo engine. The first thing he always did was use that blower for at least a minute before cranking the engine. Fumes build-up under the engine casing quickly.

I get the impression that most of this was put together without realizing there was a death involved and that the anchor was under the impression that no one was seriously hurt until he was literally reading the end of the statement there on tv. the report itself seems to imply that the missing person was found alive. someone seriously failed at their job. rushed reporting and the whole thing comes across as extremely insensitive.
One of two things likely happened. 1. They didn't turn everything off before fueling, and a spark ignited the gas fumes, which caused the guel tank below to blow. Or 2. They had fueled up, but never turned on the blower to clear any fumes before attempting to start the engine.
Proof of regular boat maintenance and daily inspection before use (check list) is crucial to the boat safety industry... You cannot forget to ventilate the bilge or make sure it even works before starting the engine and heading out on the water... Airplanes have a very strict check before engine starting and taking to the air. Maybe this concept should be MANDATORY for the boating industry as well...

Virtually every vessel has a warning label near the key/starter. Even mine has one, and it’s a diesel.
The safest but extremely inconvenient practice is to go below and do a “sniff test” to detect odors after fueling.
Fumes is why you use an exhaust fan.
That was just what I told my wife. It obviously wasn’t working or wasn’t turned on.
I took a couple cruises out of that port, and you go right by that area !! I am sorry that someone is lost; and five were taken to hospital.

ALL engines with inboard engines have bilge blowers, and they MUST be used during fueling and any time you’re going to start the engine.

or..the fuel pump ground wire was missing...saw a fire like that 30+ years ago in texas.
It's 2. That's a busy dock and it's really well kept; I doubt it's that. Besides, a spark doesn't do anything without the fumes.
