- New Jersey might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of the ideal foodie road trip-but that probably means you haven’t tried its sandwiches. Condé Nast Traveler editor, Mara Balagtas, takes us around the Garden State to try its famous sandwiches, from deep fried hot dogs at Rutt’s Hut to a roast beef, mozzarella, and gravy concoction at Fiore’s. Disclaimer: Do not watch on an empty stomach.

I'm Mara Balagtas and...
I'm Francisco Balagtas.
We're about to eat.
Hi!
Good how are you?
[Male Employee] Good.
Can we get two Taylor ham egg and cheese sandwiches
on toasted everything bagels?
New Jersey Bagels are doughier
than New York Bagels.
We've probably been eating Taylor ham egg and cheese
our whole lives.
They also are great here for hangovers.
This is perfect.
The fat sandwich was like .
A lady she create the sandwich
and students here start to come up with the idea
about what it has.
One of the fat sandwiches
has a double cheeseburger, lettuce, tomato,
french fries, mayo, and ketchup.
All inside.
I haven't gotten to the meat of mine yet
but I can see that's gonna be my next bite.
So I have to say
this is delicious.
[Male Narrator] White Manna was introduced
at the World Fair .
It's very similar to White Castle.
These are the guys who did it first
and this is the more original experience.
So it's a little crowded in here
and we're gonna get some burgers to go
and eat in the car.
As simple as it is with just
a Martin potato roll and ground beef
and cheese and onions,
it just comes together.
So good.
We are headed to Clifton, New Jersey
to go to Rutt's Hut.
Famous for their hot dog sandwich called
The Ripper.
This is so good.
I think the crispness of the dog because of the fry,
you don't get that in a hot dog.
We are headed to our final stop, Hoboken.
We're going to Fiore's
and it's a very classic Italian deli.
Roast beef, fresh mozzarella
that they make in house and that they're pretty famous for.
We'll round it.
Have a taste of that.
Oh yes.
This is so good.
So good.
I don't even have words.
I mean I'm just...

I love you Will! You Are right on with this list!
I was born, raised and still live in NJ and the sandwiches here are second to none. Especially the Jewish deli's
I regret moving
@@salty8544 you dont realize how good we got it foodwise till you move.
Born and raised in Bergen and Sussex County (I miss the Diners the most). Great places and love to come back to visit my family, however, since I joined the Army and lived in other places. I love Europe. To each their own. I will always be traveling though. :-)
Jewish delis are the best. Also Italian and Latino delis.
Born in Secaucus and raised in Morristown, but during college I lived in South Carolina. I live in Montclair now, but my first month back in Jersey, all I did was eat sandwiches, pizza, and bagels. Food culture here is unlike anywhere else in the country.
That guy was literally "speechless" the whole clip.
Jersey bro
PORK ROLL!!!!!
Fiore’s now my mouth is watering, roast beef, mozzarella then dip the whole thing in a vat of gravy. Simply the best.
In East Orange we call them an Italian Cheese Burger. Cheeseburger on a hoggie roll with mayo, ketchup sauteed onions with the fries on top. 😋😋😋
I live in Newark, and Italian cheeseburgers are the best
Italian fish sandwich is good too
Don't forget about the Italian Hot Dog!
Exactly! Jimmy Buffs > Rutts!!!!
Dickie Dees Baby. 6th and Bloomfield!
They scared to go to the hood
m smith DD is trash , Jimmy Buffs all day long
Yep. Got one!
Let's set the record straight about New Jersey's favorite breakfast, or anytime, meat.
"Taylor ham is the common name for pork roll, a food developed by John Taylor of Trenton, New Jersey, late in the 19th century. Taylor is the brand name for pork roll made by Taylor Provisions, Inc., of Trenton."
Love me some Taylor ham.
I miss Taylor Ham! Especially Taylor Ham on a hard roll (not on a bagel, sorry).
Strongly recommend hackettstown NJ called the subshack
Can't forget about Jimmy Buffs - West Orange Coopers Deli - Newark
-coopers
No cap
Coopers 🙏
Love me some Taylor, ham, egg and cheese NJ. :)
but on a Kaiser roll, not bagel, with lots of ketchup and black pepper
PORK ROLL
You forgot the best Sandwich in New Jersy.Donkeys Steaks in Camden.Anthony Bourdain called it the best sandwich he's ever eatin.
You guys should have went to Newark on 18th&18 and got an italian cheeseburger with everything toasted.
Lol like these fuckers are going to go to Newark.
Cool vid! Gotta try all these
Happy to see Asian faces in food culture! 🥰
So racist how do you know they're Asian?
Sloppy Joe at CJ’s deli in Madison, NJ. Too DIE FOR!!!!
I want to try the ripper! But white manna is awesome I’ve been there many times. Authentic and just fun to hang around and eat everything lol.
Where was Donkey’s Place in Camden
Tom - exactly !
75% of NJ is south of Hoboken...you only visited places in extreme northern NJ. Best sandwiches in the state are the cheesesteaks and hoagies in southern NJ. And BTW, it’s PORK ROLL, NOT Taylor ham!!!!
No
Yous guys don't really live in Jersey do ya? The most famous sandwich of then all is the Sub, Torpedo, the Grinder among many other names. Every town has a sub shop. Perhaps the most noteworthy is the White House Sub shop in AC. They have done more than 25,000,000 Subs. Yes that's 25 million subs. Beat that!!!
There's a Rolls Royce...
I really enjoyed your videos
Love white manna . Had rippers at other places. never had a fat sandwich but would love to try that roast beef sandwich . Grew up eating pork roll
I love me some White Castle, but White Manna in Hackensack is something special. Love em both
Haven't had a good Rubin since I left Jersey. Used to stop into Paul's Dinner in Mountain Lakes for one after a night of drinking.
Taylor's Ham, Egg n Cheese on a Toasted Bagel iz 2 Die 4 a must have if your in Jersey!!!
the original white mana is in Jersey City not Hackensack
Y'all whipping a Rolls?
Been to all of those places. Decent list.
Park ave. Deli. On park ave in newark makes one of the best sandwiches on newark. Dickie dee's on bloomfield ave and 6th delicious hot dogs
ekuak1ng69 bragmans on Hawthorne Ave as well. Been there since the 60's
But they aren’t trying to roll through newark with a Rolls Royce
If you like Dickie Dee's you'll love Jimmy Buff's hotdogs. It's very similar to Dickie Dee's but better imo. Jimmy Buff's used to be located in Newark but now they are in West Orange. You definitely have to try them especially on Fat Tuesday when you can get a double for the single price.
It's Taylor Pork Roll. I read the package.
Taylor is the brand and pork roll is the meat...get it straight
Taylor is one brand of pork roll. Usually, in North Jersey, we just say "Taylor ham," and in South Jersey, they say "pork roll." Same thing. Like some people say Kleenex or Windex.
When you guys said it's good. You have to let viewers know the texture, the content, the aroma. A simple good means you know nothing. U can't described good.
Way to stay in North Jersey. How original
Would.of been nice if you gave each place and sandwich more video time. Not enough tell on the sandwiches..
Too bad you didn't check out the 5 best in south Jersey, a cut above north Jersey. Start with White House Subs in Atlantic City folks! 😎
Ray McNab 100%
Under rated comment. Donkeys in Camden for a cheesesteak too.
The best cheesesteak I've ever had was at White House Subs!!!
Jersey food's the Best!!!
I had my 1st Fat Sandwich at RU in 1974; it wasn't called a Fat Sandwich back then. The $h!% Brown Roach Coach used to park on College Av right in front of Tinsley & Mettler dorms - the Gateway to the College Av Dorms!!! They had a sandwich called "Steak Works." It was a couple of steak-ums, cheese, onions, ketchup and fries cooked right in front of your face at eye level. They'd wrap it in foil and you'd head back to your dorm for Food Ecstasy!!!!!! Sooooo goooood!!!!!! I can taste it now!!!
😋😋😋
You guys have to try the Tuna at Big Stash’s in Kearney, voted Best in NJ 👍
Milburn Deli
Always get the pastrami sandwich
Pork roll.
And I live here in New Jersey!
If u live here it's pronounced joisey
great
What about bagels of Parsippany? Are they still open?
And as an added bonus 6. Coopers deli Newark, Nj - Fish sandwich
Coopers dirty af now . Back in the day yea .
14 seconds in: "Taylor ham"
Me, a South Jersey native: "PORK ROLL"
And you would be wrong.
@@tallrobshortpants7190 correct.
Pork Roll!
You missed the number one sandwich...Donkey's Place cheese steak. It is the best Cheese Steak this side of the the Mississippi
I may or may not have stood up some friends to go hit Fiore's. I'd do it again too.
How about Satriale's for a human sandwich!?? Lol
What ! No Jimmy Buff's ?
so freaking greasey. Charlie's in Kennilworth were much better. But I think they closed down
@reality check why wouldn't it be??? I've been sheltering in place for a while now. Has it become a ghost town???
No Millburn Deli?
Hey they forgot to mention the last place In hoboken only sells the hot roast beef I believe it is on Thursdays but check before ya go. ITS GOOD
Chris James Thursdays and Saturdays..
5 for 5. Let's go to Jersey and chow down!
If it’s not the city n ur here in nj believes that u good with the food spots some might b sketchy n some not but it’s usually all luv
I have not tried any of the places. I must try. They should make an update video.
White Castle came before White Manna!
Next time go to plaza bagels and deli in Clifton for a Taylor ham egg & cheese, you won’t regret it
white castle was first
Omg, I remember sophomore year of college going to cars at like 3 am to get a fat sandwich for a study break lmao. Good times!
And if you were in Clifton why didn’t you go to the hot grill :( I’ve lived in Clifton my whole life and never been to rutt’s hut lmao
bruhhhh literally hot grill is iconic
Clifton hot grill is gone I live here
You guys missed an iconic spot, Jim’s lunch in Millville New Jersey they have the secret sauce !!!
They don't know about us south jersians
Yeah. Looks like NJ ends at Exit 9.
Thumbs down no Cooper's in Newark.
no sloppy joes?
Juan Shaft Patel CJ’s Deli in Madison. Best sloppy joe ever.
Millburn Deli, Town Hall South Orange
what about the flame thrower??
Thank God you said Taylor Ham
It's pronounced "PORK ROLL"!
@@bariwambach4947 It's Taylor Ham goddammit
wheres the sloppy joe?
Wtf? Its pork roll not Taylor ham
Rip south jersey
Try denaros subs in DUMONT new Jersey
What about Giovannis in Secaucus
I worked there in New Brunswick on the grill at the end of 99 beginning 2000 ...my first after-school job...... I know all fat sandwiches
White castle goes back to 1921.
A few other places to try out (in Bergen County):
-Jolly Nick's in Dumont
-Crossroads Deli in Bergenfield
-CARS Sandwiches in Ramsey
-Rispoli Pastries in Emerson
-Baumgarts Cafe in Edgewater
What no New Jersey Turkey Sloppy Joes?
Balawgtaz, welcome to Filipino accent!! Baboooooooosh
You really had the nerve to come to jersey and call it Taylor Ham.
Never put Chili on top of a ripper. Mustard relish only!
You missed Giovannis in Secaucus, and Jersey City white manna is bettr
I do have to say one thing--Taylor Ham is not the regional name for pork roll. Depending on where you are in NJ, it will be called be one of these two names. The northern part of the state refers to it as Taylor Ham.
Sandwiches unlimited East Orange, NJ
It's pork roll!
They should mention that if you want a chili dog at Rutt's Hut you have to order the chili separately; Rutt's will not put anything on their dogs.
Actually the jersey city “White Mana” with one N is the original. Hackensack burgers are more unique in taste. May be the better burger but the jersey city location is the worlds fair lineage
You guys want a real pork roll egg n cheese sandwich go to Slater's Deli in Leonardo.
There is nothing similar about White Castle and White Manor except the size of the burger. Never had a White Manor make everything inside me 'slide' right out like after eating the slide burger(White Castle). White Castle is the burger that just keeps giving...you the shits
Hey I got an idea dummies! How about you drive below New Brunswick!!! There’s amazing places for sandwiches down here in South Jersey! The best cheesesteak at Donkeys in Camden beats all those other sandwiches any day of the week!
Jason S., except for the White House in AC! 😎
And except for Dos Amigos West New York, NJ
I agree, South Jersey got something to say on sandwiches!
Nope , cold cuts sandwiches maybe but fat sandwiches are the best in New Brunswick. Fat cat, fat moon, fat bi*ch, fat mamma, fat Darryl etc...plus they're Lebanese Arabs and Mediterranean food is awesome too
Now image those sandwiches being Philip Hamilton's last meal
Sunrise bagels in mtc can’t compete with hot bagels abroad come on now
White Castles (1921) was the FIRST!
Crazy how their all near me, lol
And never been to them smh
5 points in union has the best hot dogs
Nope Hot dog truck in Bloomfield ave Newark N.J.
You need to go to sandwich Unlimited in East Orange and get you an Italian cheeseburger
Sandwiches wouldn’t make it up there. Maybe back in the day sis
Italian style hot dogs you missed
I never knew not everyone ate pork roll.
Bruhhhhh did this b just say Taylor ham
Your dead if you live in NJ and have not had that top 5!! Fiore's #1 sandwiches in the world. Yes - IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE.
That's covering an awful lot of ground ...
@@elizabethsohler2410 once you go there; you will get it.
@@michaelantoniotti2738 Fair enough ! As to the entire universe , have you been? Just wondering ...
@@elizabethsohler2410 been to Italy, Spain, Germany, Sicily and Hawaii many times for shows and some for vacation.
@@elizabethsohler2410 forgot France and Holland....forgot about Holland ;-)
