I think the debate should be simple-
will Astoria (the best neighborhood in nyc)ever have better bagels than Brooklyn and the answer is not now not ever. Brooklyn has the best bagels hands down
One of the classic nyc experiences when I lived in the Windsor terrace section of Brooklyn was to come home from an evening of partying in the second best neighborhood in nyc (the east village) at 4am just in time for the freshest baked onion bagels with cream cheese
Definitely nice to go back to your hometown and I am sure the bagels there are decent but Brooklyn quality is not possible outside Brooklyn

NY is overdone more NJ videos are needed. Jersey City Grove St, Hoboken which you did, Montclair. Morristown, Ridgewood, Shore Towns, New American Dream Mall, Pal Park and Fort Lee asian food scene which I believe was done so much potential content

@@0fficer_friendly hey, I really enjoyed DUMBO and the food at the time out market, it was a good day walking across the Brooklyn Bridge and doing that area along with Brooklyn Heights and the promenade.
The staten island ferry was worth taking for the views and to see staten island. I didn't slash out much mostly did sightseeing but I did do the vanderbilt skyline and that is worth it along with it. I had a great time doing a week's solo trip

@@0fficer_friendly enjoy yourself. I'm a bit of a geek so going to sit at the little peddle beach from spiderman was nice spot to relax at. The time out market is worth a visit for food and the view from the 5th floor bar is good too. Have a great time

I rarely review anything online, but I have to here. We lived in the next town over (Hawthorne), and went to River Road Bagels ALL THE TIME for years. Best bagels on the planet!! Not only their bagels, but their coffee was killer as well. Very friendly family run business - always gave you an extra bagel (or two) in the bag, always a smile, and they know how to run that place like clockwork during heavy rush times. There could be a line a mile around the building, but it'll never, ever take you long to get in there to get your order. Quality food, courteous service, quick in-and-out...THAT'S how you run a business. THAT'S how you get people to come back. I give this place 12 outta 10 stars.
It's definitely one of the things I miss after moving to NC. But, we come back to visit often enough that we take extra bagels home with us to keep in the freezer. Not ideal, but man, when it gets toasted up, you still get an awesome bagel after the fact. River Road Bagels --- LOVE you guys! 😎👍

A guy I know who used to work in an NJ bagel shop said that they can make better bagels in NJ because real estate is cheaper and they can devote more space to preparing them and they also do a lower volume, so the quality doesn’t vary as much.
George is the best. I grew up down the street and one of my friends worked for George when she was 14. I went every Sunday and stood on line in the late 70: and 80s. The line was wrapped 2x around the entire building. FLHS class of 92. Remember there were only 2 bagel stores back then. Rivalry between SRR and RR Best days ever! Great job!

Great video. Grew up in Fair Lawn, and yes they have awesome bagels. I remember that Hot Bagels sign outside George’s place on Saddle River Road like it was 1970. If you are ever near Fair Lawn you need to check it out.

When I went to Paramus, NJ a few years back I had a Taylor's ham, egg, and cheese on a cinnamon & raisin bagel. It was great. NJ is all about their bagels.

Just came across this. Fair Lawn native (class of '90), though I live in MI now. I'm so homesick watching this. My family has patronized River Rd since I can remember - I'm 51 years old now. Its my first stop when I visit family still there. We always take a couple dozen back with us to freeze. Any bagel from outside NYC/North NJ is 100% just a bread donut. The 2 things I missed most foodwise when I left NJ: bagels and pizza.

Before I moved to Boston, I lived in Saddle Brook and worked in Paramus. There were so many great lunch options nearby. I had many a great bagel at these spots in Fair Lawn. Good times! Benny's Luncheonette just down the road from Hot Bagels is another great spot for quality and affordable food.
Bagels, gotta love them. Both of these spots look like they're top tier. That being said, I want to show you some of the best bagels that Queens has to offer as a lot of Queens bagel institutions are heavy hitters. I actually know a relative of the owner of Utopia Bagels, which Greg briefly mentioned in the video. Still though, these bagels look absolutely incredible

Before I left NYC for Ann Arbor in mid-1992, my bagel joint of choice was Ess-A-Bagel on First Avenue way downtown. There are acceptable bagel places in Ann Arbor, but you just can't beat having the right water to make them.
Before I lived in Manhattan I also lived in Jersey. I wasn’t born there, moved ther from Chicago, but I have so much love for the state, got my first ever guide dog from Jersey made so many friends there, I don’t ascribe to this rivalry between New York City and Jersey. I love both so much

I believe that last place was the Hot Bagels on Saddle River Road. I was a baker there in late '68 or early '69. They were the best bagels then and apparently that hasn't changed. I believe what is the Land & Sea was The Wayside Diner back then.
I live in Ct, and haven't had a good bagel in years .I still remember eating a plain bagel with cream cheese on a ferry boat going to the Statue of Liberty .It was delisious and many years ago and I was hungry. Thanks for making this video.

I bought the WORST BAGELS Sunday, at 9am in NYC. ( Cold, hard as a rock and covered in bubbles? Some were deformed too). New Jersey Bagels are looking pretty good. Fluffy, crispy and steaming hot !!
There is nothing better than a good bagel from the area, with some good smoked salmon and a big smear of cream cheese. Absolutely my favorite breakfast. Great video!

I was born and raised in NYC/Brooklyn - and had the best bagels. Years later, moved to southern California - and I'm still looking for that "NY Bagel." The best bagels, for me, are at Costco - but nothing beats buying them where they're baked. I like those BIG Bagels with onions or everything on it. And - the generous amount of cream cheese. The NY - and now NJ bagels are crispy --- the California bagels aren't. In the east coast, the bagels are boiled, then baked. In California they don't boil them - big difference. I also love bialys --- something I used to buy in NY - in California, they don't have a clue. I also love pumpernickel bread - so the bagel must be great. YES - don't have to toast FRESH Bagels. I am partial to a place I used to go to growing up in Rockland County (which is sadly no longer there…)…Stavros’s Bakery in Spring Valley…Soft, hot, and Soooo Yeasty….it was so very nice to see you heading back home, Jon…Your neighborhood looks so much like where I grew up just off Exit 10 on the Palisades Parkway!

I'm a very fussy bagel guy. First thing is the look. It had the shine, I love them hand rolled. My first "job" was selling bagels door to door over a summer. 6 week period. Bagels were 7 cents and my partner and I paid a nickle. We had orders for 186 the first week, but they gave us another 40 for free. We sold them all. Last week we sold over 800! I got almost all the money because my partner wanted to pitch pennies.I always won.

Excellent video. Have not been to this establishment in Fair Lawn, but it looks great. A place in Queens alongside the LIE off of Utopia Pkwy has been making decent bagels for years. I have now moved to Long Island and frequent Let there be Bagels in Port Washington. All good and thanks for the video.

I'm from NJ. (Ocean county) there is a spot in Lakewood/toms river I go to every time I go home. Broadway Giant Bagels. The egg everything and jalapeno cheddar are awesome there. I'm in Pennsylvania now and can't find any good bagel shops

Teaneck road hot bagels in Teaneck , nj is really good too. They got an award for one of the best bagels in the nation. U should check them out too. Also Sammy’s bagel , and 3 star bagel in Teaneck is good as well.

Hot bagels on River Road in Fair Lawn has the best Bagels in NJ. Soft inside crispy outside, taylor ham and cheeses are on point, cream cheeses are the bomb, everything you need for breakfast.
We have a place in Rochester called Balsam Bagels. You can actually watch how they are made while standing in line. On a Saturday morning you could wait an hour to be served.

We all know NYC is the place that really got the Bagel it's famous rep. That said NJ knows a thing or two about it also as you just shown. I'd take an everything with a smear of cream cheese at either of these places. As great as Fairlawn is there are places next to NYC that make as good or better. In Hudson County there's a place called Bagels on Park in Weehawken. It opened up just before the Pandemic and thankfully made it through. It's one of the better Bagel places around here and yes there too you'd lose count on the weekends. Great video and I look forward to more.
Grew up in Fair Lawn. Can confirm the bagels there are just better. I prefer River Road of the two but both are wonderful.

I grabbed four local bagels, cut them in quarters and had several cream cheeses...then had a Bagel Tasting with my adult kids and their mother which included Hot Bagels (Fairlawn) and Teaneck Hot Bagels. We have great Bagels in Bergen County.
So great. So New Jersey. Living in Oregon now. They have bagels and Italian food but it’s so incredibly meh! Darn!

Love this video and I respect bagel snobs. John Locatelli, was also just waiting for the NYC vs Montréal bagel debate and thanks for weighing in. As a fellow, 🇨🇦but a Torontonian, I completely agree with you. I like the "smokiness" the wood burning oven imparts, but the honey water creates a sweetness that doesn't work. I love NYC bagels and look forward to trying the NJ ones. If you are ever in Toronto, please try the bagels from Bagel World which do compare favourably to NYC and hopefully NJ. Lastly, cinnamon and raisins, to me have no business adorning a bagel. Poppy seeds, sesame seeds, salt, onion, garlic and caraway seeds only.
Here be Barr, when convenient please do a NYC pastrami vs Montreal smoked meat taste test. Some argue that LA should also be in the mix. Corned beef is not part of this comparison.

Cool man I grew up in verona. Which is Essex County but only about 10 mins away from you. I am passionate about my home town and my home towns bagels.
I will come to Fair Lawn to try the bagels you suggest. But...and this is a bigtime but... at one time you had to cross the Passaic River to Paterson to the Hamilton Ave. Bakery. I don't think you could compare the two places. Hamilton Ave. Bakery is *the*iconic bagel bakery. You had to go through an alley to get to the place and you met your friends and neighbors who were standing on line to get a dozen.
RRHB is a MUST when I go home. Grew up on that end of town so never experienced SRRHB. But yeah, I will drive to that side to get some Ness! :) FLHS 84
NYC bagels are quite tasty, especially with a smear and lox. However, the MONTREAL bagel is absolutely the best. Light and crispy, and traditionally topped with sesame seeds.
Georges on Saddle River Road is the best! I live less than a mile away and it is my go to place. My daughter just brought back a dozen to Seattle this weekend. Best diner is The Gotham. Love your vids.

Fair Lawn has some great bagel joints; River Road is my fave, but they're all good. However, the absolute best are just one town away in Garfield; Midland Bagels is amazing.

Yea native Newyorker here… and I know a few great places but I’ve had some horrible bagels from people I think try to make them and fail miserably. David’s Bagels on 1st Avenue are good!

Born and raised in NYC and have to say FL has the best bagels, love Hot Bagels. Here's a tip, buy them, put them in the freezer. Don't toast them! Put them in toaster oven on low heat. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, like the bagel gods intended 😂
