We bought the cheapest airplane on the internet and now we meet up with Shaggy and Greg to see everything wrong with it. In the first episode we got it to start, but is it air worthy? We want to take this airplane up in the air, but we have to make it perfect before we do! Did we get a good deal on this little Kitfox 1 or should we of passed on this buy?

If you are interested in wooden Props or the making of a wooden Prop, Xyla Foxlin did a piece about It on her channel a while back.
Almost always. It’s cheap for a reason.
The company I work for, could help make you a new battery box. The company is Northern Acrylics based out of Minnesota.
Personally I think you're better off going for the 4-stroke swap.
Whoawaitwhut? Log books AND receipts??? It's like your birthday and Christmas all rolled into one!
Morning! 1:17 I think it's going to be cheaper since it's an experimental aircraft. Therefore, you have more flexibility replacing parts in comparison to a certified aircraft. I'm far from being an expert, but I guess the total might be somewhere around 15 to 20k-ish. Can't wait to watch the episode till the end and find out! Have a great weekend everyone! 🙌🏼✨
Man let me tell you. Your attitude of wanting to restore old things to their former glory really got me encouraged. I might be getting a 14 foot Glastron boat for free. It was stored inside. If the hull isn't cracked and the floor seems alright, I am going to see what it will take to get it running again.
hey, you can perform miracles with fiberglass matting and a lot of sanding.
It's not "it's former glory". It's a super early 80s build and he's putting in some kind of new v-twin that will make it a custom rather than a heritage Kitfox Mk1.
The best TOY'S ? ? Airplane ; Boats !!! My things
Thank you for posting this and actually saving the plane! We live in a throw it away society. You took an old plane and are giving it a new life. Pretty freaking awesome!!!
He IS throwing the engine away....
@@troywalker8078 and rightly so.
@@troywalker8078 Probably doesn't want to die when the old one fails at 1200 feet.
Aircraft are surprisingly not very often thrown away. Probably because they are so godamn expensive.
@@moehoward01 do you think it can get that high?
Jason, come on. The 'issues' with this aircraft are very minor for the average 'experimental' ultralight owner. Quite frankly anyone who buys an aircraft like this and gives it to a qualified mechanic to do the work is crazy and just looking to have their pockets emptied. A mechanically competent owner would have it sorted in a couple of week-ends for not a lot of money. 2-strokes do NOT 'wear themselves out'. The Rotax recommended TBO is 300 hours. In fact you run them 'on condition'. Many such engines used for training go to 500-600 hours. It's horses for courses. You really need to talk to the right people for each type of aircraft.
They don’t wanna die and I wouldn’t either better safe then sorry
I absolutely agree. That Rotax is fine
It may be possible in America that you can work on an airplane yourself without any papers, but fortunately that is not the case in every country, here in the Netherlands you are not allowed to put a wrench on your airplane without any training.
You are fooling yourself son. If you intentions are to flip the airplane and make a buck all the add on's are going to put you in the hole. Fix what absolutely needs to be fixed and have fun with it. You can at least recoup your investment and make a few bucks if you decide to resell it, provided you don't go crazy.
Do you want to sell me the 532 off this please??
That cheap Kitfox came with a DIC head? They can be hard to deal with...lol Someone had to say it.
Go for it. Put the four stroke in it. Your already doing the parachute, so make it a really very nice Kit Fox.
I'm glad you finally got around to making a follow up video on this aircraft!
A parachute might be a really good option...
If the engine quit, I'd take my chances with landing the plane off airport over pulling the chute.
It's Jason.
"Pull the red handle"
"Why"
"I found out it's an experimental, so I've fitted ejector seats!"
For the entire aircraft preferably!
For the entire aircraft preferably!
@@mikeschillinger4427 Hmmm, that's a parachute, as the man said.
A boat is called a hole in the water that you pour money into. What is the equivalent to an airplane? Asking for a friend.😅😂27:13
I know you have a lot of projects going but do we have an update on this project? Also, you should do a giveaway for this!😉 I think this would be a fun first plane. Keep up the great work.
Hi all at R&R... The 4 Stroke option covers two things.😉.. The comment about an 'LS' engine conversion is covered... the kit engine has LS 🤭 in the name and two, the request for a Harly engine... Well you have a V-twin right there. 😃 Can't wait to hear that rumbling into the air.. Keep well there you all.
We want to see more videos on the kit fox!!
Rotax is one of the best manufacture of this kind of engines....
Has flown millions of hours.....whith tons of parts available, sercice centers, costumers service, manuals,.....service bolletins, etc etc......
This engines are relaible ...whith the right maintenance and operation .....
Sell the Metal Parts to a Salvage Yard. The V Twin sounds good. The Bomb Panel with IPAD idea is good. Will you have A/C and New Radiator ? Fly On Brothers on a Wing !
Ever have an Open House for subscribers? I'll be in the area this October for vacation and would love to stop by to see the projects and say hello to the crew.
Every time you say "Kit Fox", it almost sounds like "Shit Box". 😆
Yeppers, just what you need. Another amazing plane. Way to go 🥰.
I'm really interested of seeing more of this plane! I love it!
I replaced the radiator on my powered parachute which has a Rotax 582 Blue Head with a aluminum radiator that I got off Ebay. Had it retro fitted with 1" hose nipples and custom mounting brackets. A $200 investment. it has served me well.
Love Saturday morning releases! Loving how much aviation has grown on this channel.
Glad you like them! Thank you for supporting❤️
@@rebuildrescueAre you be able to find another abandoned Cessna 340? Or Cessna 310? If so where did you look for this abandoned airplane? I am an aviation enthusiast and I am looking to start a Police Styled Recreational Aviation Unit within the next several years. Thank you so much for your response.
[looking in the cylinders] This looks like a brand new engine with what appears to be just a bit over 100 hours.
[mechanic] this needs a $6000 overhaul.
Wait, what??!!
This overhaul should be fun. Expensive, yes, but easy and fun. Can’t wait to see this one in the air. 👍🏻👍🏻
I would love to see an update on this.
Hmmmm I wonder what joe and the 401 are up to today!?
G,day from Sydney Australia.
*A new engine and carbon fibre propeller is a great choice.
*Thanks for highlighting the missing split pins/safety wire on the crown end nuts.
* Is the BOM approved as PFD for experimental. Did it receive FAA approval? I thought you still needed the three steam gauges or a G5?
* How are the weld joints (rust) on the tubular frame?
🌏🇭🇲
😂Greg likes it.. although he won’t admit..👍 it’s gonna be like working on motorcycles; will be fun!
No news on the 401? Will it ever fly again?
That plane when finished with the new V twin would be a SMOKE'N deal for $24k I would totally love to buy one for that‼️Have fun my friend!
Excited about the modern and more reliable (trustworthy) motor and gauges like-wise.
I wouldn't go with the model rockets thing for the parachute, since they require power to operate. If you want something "powered" use CO2 cylinders and a hand-operated mechanism to open them.
OK, OK, Ok - My lovely wife is from Scotland. Scots aren't frugal - THEY ARE CHEAP!! She is always looking for "deals" - and some of those deals are crap - I call them "Chocolate Covered Turds" LOL, Jason, a bit of the Scotsman in you maybe??!! LOL 🤣🤣🤣
Man, I envy you in the respect that you get to get into this stuff. I love my life, but I do want to add this hobby to it.
I would go with a new engine definitely. Then rewire It with new wire & hoses. It sure cute! Go through the plane top to bottom. Any new modifications. Make it your own super foxkit.
17:14 personally I would prefer metal, but if it has a wooden prop I'll just check for cracks/damage before I start it up.
Ballistic chutes are heavy! Keep the airplane light for performance. 4 point harness. Should stall about 27 mph indicated.
it will be single place when they are done
The aeromarine installation looks like a nice option, BUT how heavy is the installation? You lose about 3 ft/min climb per pound. If I remember correctly, the gross weight on a model1 is 900 lbs. Check the weights of EVERYTHING you are thinking of changing. The airplane is a lot of fun to fly. Solo, mine would take off and land in less than 75 ft NORMAL LANDING on grass. Again think really hard about adding weight!
As to the rubbed off paint on the flaperon pushrod, this is likely due to not folding the wings back carefully! Or during transportation... not the flying configuration. The efficiency of the wood prop is terrible, go with the IVO, or similar ground adjustable.
You have to tidy the wiring and fix the interference issues, secure the fasteners, etc., no matter what you do to the power. So fix it and run it up, run around the airport in a tight pattern a few times. THEN do the engine and avionics. You'll have a comparison. If not that, get a local KF owner to let you fly their 2-stroke as a comparison to your upgraded one 🙃
Can't imagine needing a parachute in a kitfox (well maybe this one) Unless you lose a wing or landing gear or the tail, you can pretty much land this thing anywhere, Find a football stadium and you are golden, hell you can probably land sideway in football stadium.
Kitfox brags on their website that no Kitfox has ever had a structural failure.
I think it is well worth it to do it correctly as you described. Can't wait to see it come together!
So nothing is happening with the 401? No Oshkosh videos?
I think you got a good deal. I wonder how much that v twin will affect the weight and balance? I take it the covering is in good shape. I don't know if i like folding wings I am sure they are fine just something else to worry about. I think you might wanna change out all the wiring refresh it completely. That is what my friend David Adams done to his long easy good thing he did cause there was a short that he did not see till he started rewiring it and that wire went to the fuel tanks pump.
I'm an A&P, id fly a wooden prop, but for the kit fox I think I would look into a carbon fiber prop, I've flown in a newer kit fox that had one and it performed amazingly
Another project that takes away from the 401, yacht, sports car...
Opening that pipe alone improves the performance of a two stroke, one of the reasons is they simply clog up and 2's love gas-freedom. The cart guys used to drill flutes into the exhaust ports to funnel the gas.
Always exciting to see what's new for my Saturday morning entertainment. :) This Kit Fox should be FUN! Really can't wait to see the progress on the Phoenix.
Always good to see you here Brother, thank you for supporting!
It sounds like you picked up a pretty fun little airplane. Definitely go with the V Twin and carbon fiber prop. That would be super cool! That weathered wood prop is a bit scary. You guys should have this one in the air in no time.
Good luck!
Nice talkin your way into a new engine!!! 🤣😂😂🤣
Very interesting information, but I believe you will do that plane justice and it will make someone a very nice plane to enjoy some airtime without breaking the bank
Too Mr Jason at Rebuild Rescue what happened to the 401 Project?? I' miss seeing you Work on 401 I'm so Excited 😊 about your 401 can you talk about more on 401 ?? Give us Updated
Nope I wouldn't pay that much for a old kit airplane
That 2 stroke engine and gearbox looks sketchy. Get that 4 stroke replacement and carbon fiber prop. Paint it bright orange yellow.
I like the little Rotax Two cycle engine.
I like them in small projects. Maybe not so much in aviation, but they are reliable when taken care of and serviced properly. I would probably pre-mix my fuel instead of using oil injection. It can't malfunction if it is not there. New project! Now find a place to store it for the next year or so until the 401-02 is finished.
26:04 - Consider making sure you get OLED iPads (Or equivalant) as OLED does way better in bright light scenarios especially if you are wearing sunglasses while flying.
That fuel line looks more like it came from the previous owner's aquarium.
Experimental: Make it a manned RC plane! :) It's so tiny and cute. :D
Good morning guys! Still best channel on youtube!
Thank you! We hope you enjoy the episode👍🏻
Definitely needs a carbon fiber prop. All the horsepower. 😂
I've flown with both composite and wooden props, no problem with either if properly installed.
love this type of build go for it
Put a three blade composite prop on it too.
Absolutely it’s a good deal. Fresh engine and prop. And you guys have gone through the whole air frame. If you wanted a kit fox here it is.
Do did this one ever get finished? I cannot find any other videos of this experimental restoration.
Me too, did u find anything?
I loved this channel at first but it’s just kinda the same thing every video now,
It’s like Groundhog Day, I hope you guys come up with some more amazing ideas
Challenge! Find the worlds cheapest King Air... I'm sure your the guy who can do it and do a absolutely fantastic job restoring it. Love your channel. Keep up the great work and thank all the great people helping you. Cheers.
Watch GSA King Airs come up 3 or 4 in the last few months.
@officialRebuildRescue_- I'll be in contact tomorrow. Thanks for the reach out. Appreciate your intrest. Look forward to speaking with you guys.! Have a great evening. Cheers!
Your resto mod project sounds great.
Looks like a neat project! The Aeromarine engine option looks intriguing; I've not heard of that one before; how does it compare, weight-wise, w/ the Rotax 912UL (80HP) (probably, the Rotax would be much more expensive as well)? Too bad HKS gave up on the turbo "700T" (80HP, two-cylinder, FI, four-stroke, 720cc, IIRC); the "700E" was a nice little engine, but only 60HP and carbureted. I don't have lots of experience, but a KitFox would be on my shortlist of kit-planes to buy. You've probably seen the STOL Drag Race competition at Reno from this past week; some of those folks take "EXPERIMENTAL" to whole new levels (anything from modified C-180s to Steve Henry's 400HP Yamaha 998-powered "Yeehaw 8")!
What is the 4-stroke replacement that is being discussed?
not enough power for this plane.
@@buckmurdock2500 I don't want it for this plane, so what it the engine?
Just have fun and enjoy it
I like that little plane. Looks like it will be a blast to fly when you get that new engine installed.
It’s a liquid to air heat exchanger, Shirley? The liquid is taking the heat from the engine, into the radiator and the air is taking the heat from the radiator fins.
This it was a great deal and even better that your gonna go with that new v twin engine…… love this and glad your going to upgrade it rather than fix the old engine up
Right off the bat.. no.. the Hobbs does -not- tell you how many hours it has flown. It tells you how many hours the engine has ran. A significant amount, (or even theoretically ALL the hours) could be on the ground. Tractors have hobbs, but they don't fly. Also, while it is highly likely there were no safety wires etc on the landing gear, or that they were "torqued", that cannot be proven. I'm not trying to be annoying, but these are assumptions, and in aviation, there is no room for assumptions. Flapperons... I'm not even a licensed pilot (though I do have 80 hours in cessna's, occasonally fly a paramotor, and 107 drone) and I know this stuff.
That kit fox was a dream of mine when I was growing up. It was in the P.M. magazine all the time and you didn't have to be licensed.
Speaking of parachutes, in Germany all Ultraleicht/Microlight (roughly equivalent to LSA in the US) are required to have parachutes, known as "Gesamtrettungssystem", ("comprehensive recovery system"). And since the Kitfox is flown in Germany under the Microlight regulations, it makes sense that it has provisions for a parachute system.
I had a Pioneer Flightstar Ultralight in 2003 that had a Ballistic Recovery Parachute.
Honestly I think you got a steal. You can’t get a newer kitfox for less than 40k and yours is already put together! I am extremely jealous!
The blog seems to be going to much talk and not enough doing I really enjoyed how it all started but not seeing any finishing of the original aircraft.😢
Will be excited to see this build
That Can Am engine Aeromarine uses in the Merlin seems to really be a good choice over the Bombardier two stroke engines. I wonder how long before Rotax figures that out? Hummel has adapted a similar Generac V-Twin with a belt drive reduction too as I recall. Ground adjustable pitch composite three-blade prop is the way to go on this unit.
Rotax ceased production and support of all two-stroke engines 2 yrs ago.
@@buckmurdock2500 "Rotax ceased production and support of all two-stroke engines". Yes. I know that. I just wonder if they might miss the revenue from UL/LSA-X and decide to go with a four-stroke two-cylinder engine like the one's just now coming on the market. It could also be that they are content with focusing on their four-cylinder opposed certified engine clientele too. Either way, I like what I'm seeing with the V-twin four-stroke engines being adapted for the UL market. I have my eye on the Merline Lite, but I'm still not sold on the Polini. Areomarine has the Can Am V-twin they adapted for the Merlin, but it just misses making weight for the Part 103 Merline Lite. Darn.
Should be a fun plane to fly. I’d like to find one in project form, I kind of have the project disease though! lol
I see the bucket in the back it has a sign on it "Pour $$$$$ In". 🙂
Have Culver Prop out of Rolla, Missouri build you a new wooden prop.
Pretty Kewl, I tol' Ya that those "Bomb's" were Kewl.
the company home base is down in Florida, and the owner also owns the Searay (or Aventura) Seaplane (I don't remember which one it is, but They've had them Mounted on a Strut for their Seaplane.
on the Back end, is a little tiny Wind Generator, as the battery only holds a one hour charge
too many projects going on, focus on some key ones & get them completed - Where is all the cash flow coming from to sustain all these projects?????
I fly a wooden prop in a Petenpol hand made by a buddy, flies fine.
How about a new T-shirt? "Friends don't let friends fly 2 strokes!"
140 hrs ? Impressive! This plane should be in the Guinness Book of Most Deaths Avoided
Love it
So….
Back in grade school my friends dad invented the Avid Flyer. Kit Fox is the steel from that.
The Dean Wilson (Avid) and Dan Denny (kitfox) battle went to court in Idaho. Do you remember who won?
I think this one will be fun!
Don't do it. Putting a ballistic parachute in this plane would be more hassle than it's worth, and more headache to keep current. And the weight of the system will cut into its useful load. Not worth it for a plane like this.
@officialRebuildRescue-_
Not counting the cost of the system and it’s installation, it will need to be repacked every 5 yrs at an additional cost between $1000-$3000.
Probably more significant is the weight-an additional 37-41 lbs, which I believe is NOT at the CG, but behind it. This cuts into your useful load significantly.
Great show Bro , , , ! ! ! Keep teaching you
Really cool meeting you in OshKosh! Thanks for pic together. This is for everyone out there, Rotax engines run at a higher internal temp. You MUST use the right oil per manufacturer specs, not just any 2stroke oil. Bombardier recommends API-TC for a reason.
Eh, they said the same thing about my jetskis back in the day, had a 583cc and a 787cc Seadoo. Dire warnings if you don't use Rotax's oil that cost $50 a gallon at the SeaDoo dealer, you're going to have problems. I switched to using full synthetic TC-W3 immediate after warranty and they were still running fine after almost 15 years with many hard weekends at the lake, at the time I sold them. Never rebuilt either ski's engine and we would run 3 tanks of gas or more through them every weekend we had them out on the lake.
My personal opinion is that Rotax is only trying to sell their branded oil. There's nothing especially unique about these engines compared to other two strokes. I don't know what temperature the theromostat runs on Rotax engines in non-watersports applications, but in a watersport application, your water temp at the inlet is the lake water temp.
That oil he used is Klotz Benol BC-172. It is rated S.A. racing only. I use it for everything I have that does not take injection oil. It's what I have used for years in racing Karts (Yamaha KT 100 engines.) And my RD354. It is Castor based and will separate in cold weather. SP-1 Spectro is probably better or A Rotax factory recommended oil from Castrol. (Usually.)
also that B.O.M. would save imo time and money. 2500 seems like a good deal to me
Nice to see a project take shape!
Any updates on this project? I’m ready to see her fly
I'm not a real fan of parachutes on a plane, and this plane would most likely glide very well !But hey that's me 76 yo
I used to mess around with old boats and there is always something to fix. Doesn't look like that complicated to me. Everything is out in the open where you can get to it. Float planes are more dangerous to land. How hard can it be to fix the landing gear bolts? Given the importance placed on keeping that big fan out front running I'd be more interested in and how corroded the engine looks inside. Can you even get parts for it? Or for what looks like a reduction gear??
Zero corrosion inside he ran a snake can in first video
When you went through that catalog and read off the price of the carb and said it was from 1991. You realize that was 32 years ago. I was born in 1978. WTH man. Thanks Jason.
This was a great video. Best wishes!
Sweet! ( Ostensibly! ) Looking forward to finding out 😀
Hope you all had a fab time at Oshkosh! - Resh
