Noob 55 year old | Learned shutdown Coleman slide | 2 hours

- Whoa and Hi! So stoked to get my first of many slide skills for downhill skateboarding.
No more fear now of how to stop. Will need to practice on all my various boards, but looking forward to the training.
Mentally, I wanted to stop after semi-bad stand up fall that caused a small laceration to my left forearm-even with elbow pads. I didn’t give myself much time to linger on it and just followed “the process of keep trying/going”.
In the end, instead of focusing on my pain, I focused on making making tighter turns while grabbing the rail. Totally surprised when I got a realization that I could stop.
Thanks for watching.
Shout out to @downhill254skate for the awesome tutorials and volume of guides with in-depth skill knowledge. Thank you.
See you in the next video.

I'm 33 years old and getting back into longboarding. This video got me stoked. Thanks! Try dropping your hand a bit further from the board. It's better to fall on your butt doing colemans than flying forward. Shout out from the Philippines, Sir!
Thank you and glad it got you stoked. I do now place my hand farther back and drop on my butt-less frequently, but all fun. Welcome back and good luck on your returning sessions.
For actual advice keep looking in the direction you're trying to travel in. It will make it easier to bring the coleman slide back to center after passing 90 degrees. Also think about where your hand placement is during the slide. Experiment with moving it around. Your hand actually acts kind of like a rudder and helps direct where your weight is. The more directly behind you you place it, I find the more rotation you get. If you set it farther forward, like in front of your front truck, you rotate a less and are more controlled. That will be important once you start taking turns, or are trying to scrub speed going into a corner.
Awesome and epic advice. Thank you. Great details and will continue to “reread” to understand it all. Much appreciated for the coaching. 🙇🏻♂️🤙
@@cantskate5535 Sick vid To build on the advice above...
Look where you want to go. Just like driving a car.
Don't look down, look out.
Level 2:
If you're going to slide to a stop, look where you want to stop. If you are going to slide and continue, look where you want to go after you hookup.
@@highkountrykooks thank you. Mind goes blank and look down. Will make that focus on next session. 👍
@@cantskate5535 Too much to focus on at one time!!! But you def got it 💪
Definitely gets easier the faster you go!
Yes, agree. But, I have to slow down a little-my skills are lacking for balance and timing. Thanks for watching & commenting.
Bro! Mad props. Love that there is a 55 year old out there potentially pissing off his neighbors!! Now I don’t feel so alone and weird lol. Skate or die!!
Hahaha. Yeah, never too old punk. 😆🤘 Thanks for commenting.
Cool man .
I skated my longboard well into my late fifties . The biggest thing is not giving a shit what the neighbors think .
Got into other stuff but after watching this I may pick it up again 🙂
Awesome, and thanks. Mostly doing this to stay active on my rest day from indoor/outdoor climbing. It’s not the speed that excites me, but learning a new skill in athletic ability as well as mobility.
@@cantskate5535 Yes of course.
I can totally relate to that !
Thank you for making this video, It gave me confidence to keep trying, falling and all. The " that's how yours supposed to do it" replay to the neighbour got me good.
Thank you as well for watching and glad it helped build confidence. Always keep it fun as it’s your own progression to keep going. 🤘
Great video man. I remember it took me a while to learn the shutdown slide but once you get the hang of it, you lose that fear since you know how to spot. More confidence makes it easier to hit those hills.
Thank you and agree. Looking back, I wish I kept training up as opposed to only last 3 months, but maybe my excitement/progress now would not be the same. Thanks for the support and encouragement.
This is very motivating to see! The truth is that for many years I have wanted to learn to skate, but traditional skateboarding did not attract my attention, I wanted a little more speed, and finally at 24 years old I am starting to learn everything about longboarding, sometimes I feel that I can't or won't be able to learn, but watching your videos really motivates me a lot, plus, you're my father's age haha, whatever, incredible progress! I hope to be able to progress in the same way, greetings from Colombia in South America!
Haha awesome! Thank you for the great comment. Never too late to learn new skills especially if it’s painfully fun. 😆 Like everything, it just takes time with commitment to practice-which I had to do myself. Honestly, I’ve only done maybe max 50 hours of actual training - over the year - so it’s not some crazy hours. Just enjoy learning about this sport while learning about yourself. Never stop having fun. Good luck. 🤙
Tysm for this footage
Great! I am 53, yesterday I flew out of my skateboard in 26 km/h. Bless for wet grass.
Always a good thing when wipeout is less serious - wet grass. Hoping you’re getting back into it and with safety gear. Good luck. 👍
@@cantskate5535 I had helmet and "personal airbag - fat belly". I met a wobbling. :) I started this april.
@@ojanovsky haha. All good. Glad you’re having fun and enjoying the skateboarding. 👍
This is inspiring! I'm 30 and learning myself! good to see older men paving the way for me still!
Thank you. Glad to support continued movement- no matter what age. 🤘
Really well done!
Looking good!
Great Progress!
Thank you. Continue skill learning. 🤙
Man this is so so inspiring!!! I can see others agree. Keep shreddin homie!!
🙏🙇🏻♂️
I’m 60 and practicing these atm, great to watch this progress
Thank good luck in your progression too. 👍
This is a great tutorial ua-cam.com/video/5JuuF785SPY/v-deo.htmlsi=-7mHFQol0yk4N6sS
your wheels: i'm tired, boss
😆 yeah. It was both tiring for me and the butterballs. Fun.
Dude you’re awesome, I’ve been thinking of getting back into skating and this just inspired me more. Thank you!
Awesome and thanks. Good luck. There are many options as I just discovered surf skate, too in last week. It’s an experience to move / carve by your own movement.
@@cantskate5535 I’ve been looking into that as well, I skated in the 90’s and I don’t remember as many options as there is now lol.
Im in a same situation as you dont worry about neighbours keep it up you can do it, also you are already making those cool slide marks!
That’s cool you’re doing this. Slide marks are cool. Just have to rotate areas because i don’t want neighbors to complain.
Layin Thanes! Fk the neighbours they just mad koz the cant/dont skate
Love it!
My 14 yo daughter wanted to get into longboarding so i figured id join her, being 48 figured maybe im too old, but im enjoying too much. Havent skated since i was her age, lol. Thanks for this vid, it was inspiring.
That’s awesome and congrats! Age is just number. Parental bonding with our children through any activity is so important-not only because we’re dads & moms, but that learning new things never stops.
@@cantskate5535don’t take that out of context please
@@Sensei-Ollie sorry, but what out what context? Still trying to decipher comment strings and replying. Thanks.
@@cantskate5535 you said “age is just a number” which is a common thing that child predators say, it’s fine in this context though lol
@@Sensei-Ollieoh geez - didn’t even know that, but thanks for letting me know. Yeah - definitely not the intended context.
So cool keep it up!
better than me my guym you are doing well!
perfect man! i just bought my first sliding gloves and this is such an inspiration
Awesome! Congrats and much success on your adventures.
@@cantskate5535 I commented on my other channel, anyway I bought the exact same wheels as yours.
I am on this same journey right now. I was fortunate enough to go to an outlaw downhill event in Asheville recently and really see great skaters in action. It helped me see what I need to work on and how I may modify my board for the way I want to skate it.
All of this is very different from the other skating I do, but I am hyped on it.
Nice progress. Definitely interested in this journey.
I have the same exact pads. I am also wearing a motorcycle jacket, way too hot but adds confidence.
Stay Rad Sir.
Awesome and congrats on starting your journey. My buddy/coach, Bailey, suggested going to an event to learn, observe and practice-so looking for one. Makes sense. Hype is always good to continue your journey. Good you’re wearing pads and moto jacket: got to keep yourself from injury. Good luck. Next video will be on foot breaking (sloppy & slow), but a start.
@@cantskate5535 awesome, looking forward to it.
Positive, great move
let's go! happy to see you all padded up! I'm always the most padded up guy on the hill :) def get some crash pads for the hips!
Thanks and yep-learned the hard way…hahaha. Yes, have pads all around now. Got some good carving practice in last few days with my buddy, Hector. New vid shortly.
@@cantskate5535 put some cones on the ground and practica carving hard a tight. Use your hands on the ground and make sure your weight is all the way on your front leg!
@@Dagor thank you. Actually slowed it down and did start practice strictly carving. Feeling better on control. No grabbing rail either. Board is starting to slide by itself with good position/technique. New video this week.
Great work man, keep it up! 👍
Thank you.
Yeah you’re doing great man!
@@jayphive2468 thank you. 🤙
Way to tattoo the street!! 😁
Yeah - skid marks or “ink marks” 😆
Fun is the key word.
Excellent progress video ❤
Thank you so much 😀
Increíble, yo también tengo 50 y hago las mismas locuras 😅
Wicked cool. Great to hear you’re active & crazy, too 😆🤙
Bend your knees low, low, low and focus on making smooth and wide carves across the entire road. Be deliberate about the transition of all of your weight from toeside to heelside. You will feel the board start to shlub slides in your smooth, tight, carves. stay low.
best advice here
Thank you. Definitely need to do that and more. Great tips and will update that in future vids.
hey how do you slide after carving? Im learning this for a few days now and I haven't slid lol
@@Bolokization When you have a good rhythm going consciously move your weight towards the front of the board as you shift your weight. Swing your hips to change direction, but also swing your hips towards the nose of the board.
For stand up slide, heavy on front foot and lighten your back foot.
Also try little skids before the big ones👍
Thank you, much appreciated. Just like anything to improve-make the time.
That's great keep pushing !!
At some point you'll transition from one body pivot around your glove down to an actual back leg extension to push the board sideways.
This will help you tons!
To do a speed check you just kick it out and release the tension to hook back
To do a pendy you kick it out forst and then pivot your hips.
While sliding you'll see that you can lock up all your muscles. That'll dictate where you want to slide.
Awesome skill advice-thanks. Looking to try in upcoming weeks. Mentally can visualize, but body won’t yet agree. 😆
awesome!!
the impact's most secure point beneath the pad (i.e.- the exact point of impact) will commonly shear the epidermis by force , splitting instread of grating, to be graphic....that's why the gform-esque type pads can often do more damage to novice joints than no pads at all will. That is painful but you get use to it & stop falling after a while.
(edit: try to not hang off the board so much, keep eyes forward and it REALLY halps to do that on a corner so-as to have a apex instead of sliding to slide. )
Thank you. I appreciate all the great advice. Will be working on the looking forward as well not hang so much off the board.
hype!
Good man! Keep at it
Thanks for encouragement 🤩
Continuing on down the hill instead of towards that curb and on the flat would be a better idea for starters.
Yes, agree. Didn’t really know what I was doing (barely now too). Just getting started in defining my intended path/direction and maybe get it right 40% of time. Just started understanding proper use of trucks and steering.
Salut, nu ești singur )) eu sunt 49 și am început cu câteva luni in urma .
Awesome and congrats for getting started. Made the most progress in last two months from just practicing a lot and repetition. Good luck! 🤘
I'm 47 and started longboarding 3 months ago. I'm extremely competent but still cant nail a slide. You give me hope!
Hope is always a good thing. Just practice legit skills and don’t rush the process (like me) 😆
lol "cantskate55". You can skate. It's fun as hell and healthy. Be safe and keep at it.
Thank you for the encouragement and positive vibes.,👍
I'm 53 and trying to learn how to slide on a longboard. Thanks for your sharing that let me have an idea of how to get start.
Glad to help and wish you well in progression. Took me this long to understand terminology and actual application. Still struggling with sliding and getting back up to continue, but all great fun.
No se rinda don usted dele a la tabla
You are one spry 55 year old I have to say, this isn't easy if all I hear about age is true. Being 23 I can't quite grasp it obviously haha.
Haha. Just have fun while continue to learn about yourself through your activities. 🤙 It’s amazing how your body adapts and get stronger mentally, physically and don’t forget bone density.
does wheels make a difference? Im running commuter wheels and they're a little challenging to slide
ooops nvm! I just bought the exact same wheels haha. Thanks!
Yes, I believe it is. Various wheel companies have specific “slide formulas” that are good for sliding and wear much better than street wheels. I’ve actually flat spotted a street wheel in 2 tries. If you want smaller wheels, but slide well - may try Powell Peralta dragons or Spitfire formula four. Sector 9 butterballs are classic, but are fairly large. Good luck in sliding.
what wrist/elbow/knee pads are those?
They’re TSG and triple 8. Really comfy and durable.
*PromoSM* 😩
And get some hip pads, you're literally falling on your hip on purpose and acting like that's not insanely dangerous for someone your age.
Thanks. I always wear hip pads. Ever since my epic bloody first fail (in Seattle) in January last year-I never go hard committed training without.
its so risky
try surfskate bud ❤
for me its more safer..
Thank you. I’ve looked at, but truthfully don’t really understand it. May look into it more. 👍
Bruv surkfskates are deathtraps at speed. Homie's doing just fine, he's learning shutdown slides
@@cantskate5535a surfskate carves so tight that you do not need to slide to control speed, you can carve a hill as long as the road is 2 cars wide.
Deep pumps with surfskate kind of go hand in hand with standup slides
Atleast initiation wise
You're doing it wrong. You should be carving, which you haven't even learned yet, and then just push harder and harder on each turn with your weight over the front wheel and boom, you slide.
Awesome and thank you for encouragement. I was thinking about pushing, but truthfully exhausted by second session. Will focus on carver more and maybe even as general warm.
