Depends what time you're thinking of: in 1066, the Normans (working from what's now Normandy, in France) conquered England. Richard I the Lionheart of England, over a hundred years later, still couldn't even speak much if any English. In the mid-1300s, Edward III began the Hundred Years' War against France, because he wanted to reassert the English claim to France; this led to the reconquest by Henry V in 1415 (another great movie!), and then Joan of Arc; and finally, England was beaten again.

Somehow it very seems fitting that a bunch of men shouting at each other in suits of armour should be shouting in French.

De qui suis-je le fils ?

Don't forget buddy, the title "Morte D'Arthur" (on which the movie is based) isn't English. Even English authors used the French language to impress in the 15th century. French was the language of knowledge for many years.
I remember a little from high school... "Avec nous, ou contre nous??"
I've loved this movie since the day it came out.
Snifnscratch, you might respect John Boorman more for his earlier film, "Deliverance".

Excalibur was not the sword in the stone. Excalibur was given to Arthur by the Lady of the Lake. The sword in the stone was Ex Saxo. They are two different weapons.

Not in this movie, and it was one of many good creative decisions by John Boorman and Rospo Pallenberg to streamline the complex and contradictory threads of Malory's text as well as all the various legends into a single coherent story that flows unbroken like a river to the sea. For a movie it made far more sense to merge the two swords and their origins, particularly as this scene involves Arthur learning a vital lesson he needed to learn to be a truly great king. Arthur would never again make the mistake of misusing Excalibur in that manner -- though he would make another mistake with the sword that would not be redeemed for many years and at the cost of much misery to the land.

I read an article in "The Daily Telegraph" (a good UK) newspaper, where 2 french sociologists traveled europe asking people of different nations what their favourite euro country was. When they counted the scores for each country, france was the lowest on the list........
I`m really not interested who does and doesnt like england. I am interested in the fact that only the french like the french....

I think it's Richard Wagner "Twilight of the Gods". watch?v=N0PpTPvbr-4 and skip to 1:39.
I think "Trauermarsch" plays at the end when they're returning the sword, has similar music. watch?v=7Ll4qS4anGo
