Hi Amber! Thank you! I painted that fireplace 3 times. 😆 I have another video going darker over top the white. As I mentioned yesterday in WM, I did a fake brick wall in this house. It's all been fun to experiment. Hope you are having a great day! Xoxoxo 🌸
Out of the many painting methods for brick fireplaces, THIS IS THE ONE I choose! Thanks for posting your method. I’m finally convinced I will not regret painting mine.
I've seen dozens of DIY white wash brick tutorials. This one was simply the best! Your way of doing it had more style to the brick, you've truly created the original white wash look! Others have tried and failed by diluting paint with water, and just painted the bricks away. They didnt add the secret ingredient, which was the dabbing on each brick, keeping some of the original color of the brick, to peak through. Plus, you used plaster of paris, which I think, gave it that gorg effect. Thank you for sharing...you've inspired me to try this, as im sure you did for many others out there. :)
Thank you Kevin! I actually repainted again and then just did it a 3rd time. 😆 I think I am finally settled on a finish. I have another video on the darker finish. Xoxoxo
I researched many videos on how to do an easy technique for German Schmear and found this video to be the best. Instructions were right on and loved that there was no unnecessary talking. My brick came out great. Thank you!
You have just inspired me to paint our brick wall - my husband is not keen on me painting over bricks. But I know he will love this, I am just going to do it. Thanks
Hi Dora! I usually don't like to do it either but ours looked SO dingy and worn out. It cost me basically nothing since I had everything on hand. I hope you end up liking the result and your husband doesn't get mad at you! Lol! Go for it!!! Let me know how it turns out. 🧡👍🏻 Xoxoxo
We have an old red brick fireplace in our living space and I have been thinking about painting it. This might just give me the courage to do just that. Thanks for sharing.
I painted that fireplace 3 times before we moved. There are so many options and ways to do the mortar as well. Wish I could come help! 😁 Go for it! Xoxoxo 🌸
I searched the internet for days to find the right method transform a brick wall in the great room of the home we just purchased. I knew I wanted a German Schmear look, but I was intimidated by the thought of using mortar, I didn't want a whitewash look and I definitely didn't want to just paint it. I felt comfortable with the idea of using paint with plaster of paris and loved your final product. I wanted to have a bit more of the brick show through, but this method allowed me to choose how much or how little I used, which was perfect. I'm so happy with my final product and wanted to say thanks for the inspiration! The back side of this wall is a fireplace in our game room and I'll be extending the treatment as soon as the contractors are done with our remodel.
Hi Mary! So glad you stopped by! I have 2 videos on painting this fireplace. I recently repainted it, so you might like that look also. Just thought I would share! ua-cam.com/video/MW9wz0sOPOs/v-deo.html I hope it turns out great! Xoxoxo
The video was great, your detailed instructions, your voice, the backround music, the method of applying the paint and the finished product. Excellent. Thank you
We have a mantel the same brick and we are going to do this , this coming Spring 😃👍Thank you for sharing your ideas😃❤️ My husband had a Triple By Pass Surgery in October , So we need to wait until he gets all his strength back, but I showed him your video and he’s wanting us to give this a go in the spring😃 I can’t wait to do this on our fireplace 😃 You are So creative and talented 😃❤️👍 Texas Lady🤗
Thank you! I totally understand! I would apply less and step back as you go then add more. I paint that brick 3 times and changed the color after the white. I have more brick tutorials out also. I am currently working on brick in our new home around the wood stove. 😆 I am loving the messy mortar look now. Just gorgeous for it! Xoxoxo
I am getting ready to do this to our fireplace in our 1850's farmhouse. I was going to use mortar but think I will do it this way instead. Can't wait to see how I do with this project but it looks quite easy! Yours is beautiful. Thank you for the video!
That sounds like a fun project! I hope it works well for you. I found by using this method with thicker chalk paint, there was almost no mess and no clean up and no extra sanding, scraping or wiping steps! Best of luck! 😉
That came out exactly right. A few years back I rented this old apt. Had a beautiful brick fireplace. The stones were different from yours. It was old and dirty and burnt. Well we painted the room, took up the carpet and left the wood. Then we painted the fireplace exactly the way you just did. The landlord was furious when we told him. But, once he saw it he just loved it. Had us do the fireplace in his home in place of a months rent. So it pays to paint. I love to paint. Have painted lots of things over the years. Yes indeed, paint can do wonders.
I have very similar bricks except it’s an entire feature wall that spans the entire width of the lounge and dining area. Been watching a lot of videos on the German smear technique. Looks like we’re going your way! Excited by the project now.. Thank you..
I enjoyed your technique and mostly the simplicity of how you accomplished the paint project. It's very can-do. Thanks for uploading. I started on my fireplace today, and know how to finish it since watching your video.
My first house was a 1940 English Tudor and it had a similar fireplace with brick but only up to the mantel, except it had slate stone on the hearth. I could not decide whether I wanted to paint that brick or not. About 3 years after we purchased my "handyman special" dream home and all the main remodeling was finished, we had to relocate to a different state for health reasons of a family member and had to sell the house. Sigh! I always wonder if the new owners went ahead and painted the brick! I enjoy watching your videos so much because it reminds me of that time and because you have so many decorating ideas out of the ordinary gorgeous!
Your technique was perfect for me & super easy, Took only 50minutes to complete plus it was cheap to do. This change has completely changed my house in a positive way. Thanks so much. Linda from Florida
I love your paint technique on your fireplace. Mine was solid white when we purchased the house. Our porch was red brick, which I painted to match both ends of our house. It makes for one cohesive look. I used a wire brush to clean the brick and just painted with a good paint, and a very thick roller of course. It turned out beautifully. I love painted brick. I’m looking forward to more DIY projects of your home.
Hi Susan! I love painted brick, too! If our mortar had not been so dingy, I probably would have left it as is. However, painting it certainly brightened up the room! I will have tons of home renovation videos, but we postponed those until after Christmas because we have too much going on. Keep an eye out for those starting in January! 👍🏻 Have a wonderful weekend! 🧡 Xoxoxo
More, More,More please! Love your "techniques" and that you just go for it. I have just discovered you and I'm working my way thru your videos. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Shelly! I am adding ad many videos as I can! 😁😉🤗 I should have more painting tutorials this summer when I can be outdoors more often. Wishing you the best! Stay safe and healthy! Xoxoxo
I’ve been searching for videos on how to do this and yours is, by far, the best! Great explanation and I love that you explained it without a bunch of gabbing. It looks amazing! I’m going to try it! Thank you! I just subscribed!
Absolutely gorgeous..I just did my fireplace. Turned out pretty much like yours using the same technique. It brightens up my family room such a difference well worth it.
Nice job. Was going to ask about why chalk paint but you answered someone else. What I wanted to say is I appreciate your presentation a lot! You just got right to the point describing the items used and how to use them, skipping all the cutsy babbling comedy so many others seem the need to do. Bravo! Music background was also a nice choice and volume appropriate.
Awesome Lisa! I'm so glad it worked well for you. 😉👍 I love seeing before and after photos if you want to send them in a message on my Instagram, The Painted South. Have a wonderful rest of your week! Xoxoxo
Oh how i wish i had seen this before i had my fireplace painted white. I love your final product; i only like mine. Good job and thank you! Love your hand made brick!
Hi Linda! Thank you! Maybe you can remove small amounts of paint to reveal brick underneath? I really liked our brick but not the dingy mortar. 😉 Have a wonderful weekend! 🧡 Xoxoxo
Hi Sonia! Yay! I would love to see before and after photos! If you have Instagram, you can send a message with photos attached that way. Thank you! Have a wonderful week and weekend ahead. Xoxoxo
I just did mine yesterday and could not believe how good that looks, so happy! But then I saw your other video where you repainted it)))) it does look great though, both variations, just wanted to thank you for making this video, since your brick just the same as mine, and it worked perfectly!!!
Yay! I'm so glad your project turned out great! We actually just sold that house a few days ago and I will miss the fireplace. If you ever decide to change the color again, it is very easy and the options are endless with paint! Thank you for leaving a kind message. I'm so glad the video helped. 🤗 Have a wonderful week! Xoxoxo
@@thepaintedsouth I hope you enjoy your new home! Yes, I watched how you did it, and loved the depth and dimensions that you created with diff. paint colors!!! Super creative! Thank you again!
Your fireplace came out beautiful. I painted a fireplace like that years ago. It had rounded creekbed stones I think they were called. What a difference it made in our dark living room. Such a simple makeover, but with stunning results.
I have not liked (really despised) our fireplace since we bought our house 29 years ago. I am going to try this method in the next few weeks. Currently at home with Covid, not up to a project just yet, but soon!
Hi Suzanne! I hope you are doing well and not suffering from too harsh of CV symptoms! I love brick fireplaces, but they can surely be an eyesore if you don't love them, right? I actually repainted it again in this video- ua-cam.com/video/MW9wz0sOPOs/v-deo.html I am actually adjusting the color, right now, to get it just right and better match my upholstered furniture colors. Best of luck and well wishes to a speedy recovery! 🧡 Xoxoxo
Love your work in this..... most of these techniques turn out too white for me.... so I love how more brick comes through on yours. Also love the idea of painting the brick first with whatever color you want to show through! Great job; you make it look so easy!!!!!
i used this method due to less mess..used home depot flat masonry paint..mixed 8 tablespoons of calcium carbonate with 4 tablespoons of water then poured that mixture into a quart of the masonry paint. Went on easy! Dried almost immediately! love how it brightens the entire room.
Thank you Carolynjean! I will be releasing a new video in the next day or so showing the new mantle my husband made (and I stained and painted) all decorated for Christmas if you are interested in seeing it that way! 🎄Xoxoxo
Your tutorial is superb! I’ve been contemplating our fireplace as well..you’ve absolutely inspired me to move forward, thank you! Truly looking forward to more renovations, thanks for sharing ♥️
Yay! Thank you Misty! I hope your fireplace turns out fabulous! Please let me know. 🤗 Thank you for watching and commenting. I will definitely have more renovation videos to share... an entire house worth. Lol! Have a wonderful weekend! Xoxoxo
Love this. I’ve been researching so many types of finishes and thought I was going to use German Schmear but wasn’t sure since it’s so permanent. This method seems perfect. Thanks for sharing. I was going to post a pic but don’t see how to do that.
That looks lovely. I painted the bottom half of my 160 yr old fireplace and then I flushed and wallpapered the top. It made a huge difference. The only advice if give is if you are planning on using the fireplace use paint that can withstand high temperatures
Lovely! I prefer this to German Schmear, the other technique I was looking at. My old bricks have a lot of texture, so I will skip the plaster. Thanks for the video!
Love this! I had painters do my fireplace in flat white, and while I like it better than the red brick, I don’t love it like I do your finish. Of course, now I want to sand blast it off or repaint and begin again. Your brick is great, probably the hand made ones, and one or two look inside out.
Hi Linda! Thank you! Maybe you can use a wire brush to gently scrap off paint in some areas? Or a paint remover with it? You don't want to damage the brick, but most newer brick is pretty durable. Older brick may be crumbly. Just a thought! Best wishes! Xoxoxo
Love it !! I'm from the south also!! Yay, ok I done my fireplace and hearth last February just using the pink putty that turns white, worked great, no paint at all!!
to me paint is like God touching someone. the piece and the person are both changed beyond all imagination!!! but like you I have painted for years. mostly watercolor. but i have finished furniture for myself. I just love how you can take something and give it your personality and new life.
I am looking forward to doing my brick fireplace.I have painted all my white cherub and other things a Mahoney healing chair I am going to distress it .Thank you 🙏🌸
Beautiful transformation, I’m getting ready to do our daughters brick fireplace, i like this method the best so I’ll use this on hers. Thank you so much for this video, well done.
New sub from Australia and loving your channel, you inspired me to do my fire place today and I am thrilled with the finished effect so wish I could show you . I used rustolem chalk paint white linen We do not have much choices in chalk paint here so will start making my own after watching you . Thank you so much
Thank you Julie! It is on my bucket list to visit Australia! I'm so glad your project turned out great for you! I do want to mention that we don't use our fireplace at all, so I haven't sealed the paint with a fire resistant topcoat or anything. It will help with clean up from soot. But the paint should stay put and not rub off at all. Thank you for subscribing! Hugs from SC, USA! XOXOXO
I *REALLY* don’t like the white mortar. Is there a way to go over the gray (the one that is…well, mostly on there) in spots with some brown glaze in spots and maybe a white glazing type technique in other spots? I *LOVE* that island!!! That’s gotta feel good! Good to see you smiling! :) I wish I could come over and help ya with that brick! I would if I could, but I’m in Kansas City! Your frustration with it makes me feel so bad for ya! I think some of it is just overthinking, the lighting, the other colors in the kitchen or lack there of (for now)…but mostly overthinking!! Honestly, that’s a huge (YUGE!!!) project to take on by yourself! I bet now that the island situation is settled, it’ll be much easier! I love that ochre color!!! Love the placemats too! And, those little blue jars! Ugh….WANT! Lol I can’t even! Whadda, I know anyway!?!? Keep smiling!! Keep us in the loop!
How did this hold up without a sealer over it ? Please let me know fixing to do my fire place by your video its the best one on you tube by far good job on video !
I have been wanting to paint my fireplace but my daughter always tells me out of it. Your fireplace looks so good I am definitely going to paint mine. Thanks for the help.
Hi Kaitlin! Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it! Here is what I used, but you can certainly used a variety of similar products and get the same result. I just used what I had on hand. •Plaster of Paris (adjust amount to achieve desired consistency) •Glidden Paint with Primer in Eggshell finish (soft white color) •3" wide Chip Brush (cut bristles down to 1" length) •Paint stir stick •Mixing container •Hot water, but you can omit that step and add directly to paint if you want a thicker, textured consistency.
I am watching this video on behalf of a friend with a brick fireplace. This is the best method for indoor brick that I have seen so far. I am going to search for the best product to use for her to randomly stain some bricks soft black and other other brown. So it is not just red showing through. The concern here being that the darker stain does not blend in with wet white paint/plaster mix when she is applying the white washing. If you have suggestions for the under stain, I would really appreciate it. Beautiful work and thank you for sharing.
Hi Marie! You are a great friend to help her so much. 🤗 You are exactly right about the stain bleeding through the paint. There is a possibility it wouldn't, but I would suggest using chalk paints in darker colors over the red brick in certain areas or cover as much as she wants. Darker grays and browns will tone it down and look great peeking through the white. There are many premade colors or she could DIY her own with the same method I used for the white paint, but in dark colors. I hope that helps! Let me know how it turns out! I would love to see photos if you want to send them on my Instagram page- The Painted South. I hope you have a wonderful week! Xoxoxo
HI! Two questions.....What color would you do as a "base" if you want to cover-up an ugly "pinkish" brick? Second question....Will a sealer protect it heat-wise, and also enable to clean off any "soot" (sp?) down the line??? Thanks! Great video!
Thank goodness I found your video ... :) Makes complete sense and your method is very sound. Thank you!
I absolutely love this. I also love the way you narrated the step by step instructions. So easy to follow.
Hi Amber! Thank you! I painted that fireplace 3 times. 😆 I have another video going darker over top the white. As I mentioned yesterday in WM, I did a fake brick wall in this house. It's all been fun to experiment. Hope you are having a great day! Xoxoxo 🌸

Out of 40 videos I have looked at to make over our fireplace, Your style is by far the best . thank you and you did a great job.

Love this. I’ve been researching so many types of finishes and thought I was going to use German Schmear but wasn’t sure since it’s so permanent. This method seems perfect. Thanks for sharing. I was going to post a pic but don’t see how to do that.
Tag me on IG or send a message! Xoxoxo
Wow that looks Awesome.
Thank you Yulanda! Xoxoxo
Looks great! Do you have any regrets and how easy is this to clean....thank you for sharing your diy project!
GREAT JOB!
Xoxoxo
Don't mess with it. This looks sloppy and half-finished. (I'm a designer)
This was great
Love it !! I'm from the south also!! Yay, ok I done my fireplace and hearth last February just using the pink putty that turns white, worked great, no paint at all!!
Love the fireplace!
Wow that looks great,I love it
Thank you!
to me paint is like God touching someone. the piece and the person are both changed beyond all imagination!!! but like you I have painted for years. mostly watercolor. but i have finished furniture for myself. I just love how you can take something and give it your personality and new life.
This is on my "to do" list so I'm very glad I caught your video of the process. Thanks so much!
That does it! I’m going to do it! I’ve been debating this for 3 yrs! Thank you, thank you. It looks sooo, good!
It looks beautiful!! I’ve been debating to do mine and now I’m sold after watching your video! Heading to Lowes today😀❤️
Hey Kathryn! I hope it works for you guys! For me, it was less mess and quick drying. Let me know how it turns out! Xo
i know I am kinda randomly asking but do anybody know of a good site to watch newly released series online ?
@Reese Conor i would suggest Flixzone. You can find it by googling :)
@Gage Morgan yea, have been using flixzone for since march myself :D
@Gage Morgan Thanks, signed up and it seems to work =) I appreciate it!!
I love your style!!! You make things look so easy. Not sure I could accomplish what you do. I sure would love to. 👍🏼
Beautiful transformation...
Thank you Vicki! Xoxoxo
Looks amazing!!!!!! Great job!!!!!
I have wanted to paint my gray fireplace but my husband is dead set against it. Yours is beautiful!
I like how you incorporated plaster of Paris, it seems cleaner and much easier to use instead of mortar. Thank you
New sub from Australia and loving your channel, you inspired me to do my fire place today and I am thrilled with the finished effect so wish I could show you .
XOXOXO
We converted our fireplace to a gas one so the bricks dont get hot at all , love your channel and your videos are so well presented and informative
I have some fake brick behind my bakers rack. It has always been a dark spot but now after watching you I will attempt to lighten it up.
Great video! I'm ready to get started. Thanks.
Thank you! Let me know how it turns out! 😉🤗 Xoxoxo
How did this hold up without a sealer over it ? Please let me know fixing to do my fire place by your video its the best one on you tube by far good job on video !
Looks great!
Thank you! Xoxoxo
I have been wanting to paint my fireplace but my daughter always tells me out of it. Your fireplace looks so good I am definitely going to paint mine. Thanks for the help.
We painted ours khaki along with the rest of our walls and it turned out great! (We have a wood stove and used outdoor paint to withstand high temp).
nice and i love it. thanks for the tip
Love the outcome! Can you list everything you used please? So far your method has been my favorite!
Hi Kaitlin! Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it! Here is what I used, but you can certainly used a variety of similar products and get the same result. I just used what I had on hand.
•Plaster of Paris (adjust amount to achieve desired consistency)
•Glidden Paint with Primer in Eggshell finish (soft white color)
•3" wide Chip Brush (cut bristles down to 1" length)
•Paint stir stick
•Mixing container
•Hot water, but you can omit that step and add directly to paint if you want a thicker, textured consistency.
Xoxoxo
So pleasant to learn from you.thank you
HI! Two questions.....What color would you do as a "base" if you want to cover-up an ugly "pinkish" brick? Second question....Will a sealer protect it heat-wise, and also enable to clean off any "soot" (sp?) down the line??? Thanks! Great video!
Im doing this TODAY!!!
Awesome! Let me know how it turns out for you! Xoxoxo
