The thief got caught because the video went viral and TV channels took a keen interest. The police realised this and decided "we'd better sort this out as it does not leave a good impression of Thailand". The courts thought the same and gave the thief a stiff sentence - sending out a message. I suspect this kind of theft has happened numerous times but never filmed and consequently no police action is ever taken. Quite lucky he filmed it in the first place. I wish him good luck with his channel and his new business.

Another great one Pete. I think the gold shop owner needs to pay him some compensation. I my country you need to prove ownership of such a valuable thing before you sell it. It is not the monetary value that counts but the sentimental value. What a shame he did not get it back.
Having watched the video I must admit that my first impression was completely wrong. This was obviously not a setup and it was actually a very unfortunate situation. It is good that the culprit was apprehended, but the final outcome was not totally unexpected. Another good interesting video, keep the good work.
My maid stole some of my belongings, admitted to it at the police station. They asked me to forgive her and walk away with my broken earpods and empty cologne. She walked away with a "warning" and nothing else.

Just warning anyone about not wearing any fake things too because the robber will come back and harm you as well (loosing face) - it happened in the past to Thai people. I wish you luck Frederik. Good interview Pete thanks.

Sorry to hear about this - best to get over it as quickly as possible, don't waste energy on it - it's already done and in the past. Over the years I have had a couple things stolen during my travels - including a top of the line iPhone that was snatched out of my hands on the Lyon Metro as we pulled out of the station and the doors were closing. This can happen to you in any world city. If you get approached by strangers anywhere they want something from you that simple. Ie walk around in Amsterdam, if a stranger asks you to take a photo what they check for is if you are wearing a expensive watch etc.
It's not only a gold chain, but a heritage. Feel sorry for your loss. I have a similar experience in Vietnam when I was there for business. I learned that I shouldn't had carry my wallet recklessly even though I was walking in the exhibition center in early morning. In total, I lost 50K THB. The theft got lucky indeed. 😅
One word comes to mind….”streetwise.” 😀 It’s sad that he lost this necklace which has sentimental value. But it could have been worse. Some people have lost their lives having been robbed.
I hope he's not planning on a security business! The lesson is clear, don't display wealth, and keep all valuables under cover and out of sight. I was in Pattaya one evening and when I got back to my hotel I noticed a rip in my small backpack. Someone had used a knife to try to access the front pocket, but must have been disturbed. Don't flash your phone around, but sometimes it's actually safer to hold it (tight) in hand than have it shoved in your back pocket. An 'ass grab' is not uncommon on Sukhumvit.
Great View, be nice if you can share the name of the condo development .. Saw a previous video on Thong Lor vs a lesser place where you commented that you missed the older "less commercialized" Bangkok, you might want o head to Vietnam to discover more of the old Asian charm ..
actually quite common for LBs to steal/pickpocket tourists in pattaya. especially along beach road late night. real girls don't seem to steal / pickpocket on the streets.
It usually happens in touristy cities all over the world I think. And I can relate that social media power here is so strong , so much faster than police's response which we can't really rely on in Thailand 🤷♂️
Nice catching the young big lad lol for that interview Pete,3yrs ffs man..bet she he regrets that..if it didn't get so much publicity it would of been less for sure..🏴🇹🇭❤️🙏
I never allow strangers to hug nor touch me anywhere and especially that bit of road he was mugged. Tough lesson learnt. You can wear gold, plenty of people do. I'd have clocked it and to thief did fumble about a bit. Dude was just too euphoric with the videoing and so on.
Sorry to hear. I lived many years with my family in Asok area and we grew up watching tourists every day seeing how uncareful they could be. We have a saying within the expat community "You control Bangkok, or Bangkok controls you". I got my passport taken once and my headset out of my purse. Lesson learned.
Pete, I'm really glad you added that last piece to your video. As you know, it's important that people know about the safety in Bangkok....actually for the whole country, in my opinion. I've lived and visited a few places around the globe, and this country is truly like no other.
A taxi driver almost got me and a friend in Bangkok. He took us to an area near Nana, like a back alley with nothing but dudes waiting outside a supposed Bar/Nightclub. There was no Music and nobody around going in and out of the building. We refused to leave the taxi and demanded to be taken back to Insanity Nightclub. It was scary..
He got damn lucky that the media got involved otherwise I doubt the Tourist Police would have done much of anything. He was smart posting the video on the internet but sort of dumb wearing that at night in that part of Bangkok. I tend to only stay in Thai hotels/ guest houses where only Thais stay since many tend to have on the doors of the rooms a place for your own lock and also a closet inside the room where you can put your own lock. If I have someone come to my room for hire for a massage I make sure everything is locked, the keys and extra money hidden. Only enough money to pay for the services and perhaps a tip. In twenty-two years never had a single thing stolen or money taken. You just have to have common sense more than the average foreigner.
People get killed easily in places like Dominican republic wearing any kind of flashy jewelry. I'll never understand why one would do it. When Paul McCartney was Recording In Lagos a bunch of guys jumped out of a car and robbed him and Linda at knifepoint. Took all their money and their Band on the run tapes too. When you're a foreigner you're already a target and resented by the locals to begin with. Don't add gold to the mix.
If you decide to play in a rough playground, don't be surprised if you get a bloody nose. And.. that didn't look like a girl although it hardly matters. If you go trolling the sex districts, don't bring a huge wad of money, gold, expensive cameras or laptops. This guy seems like a nice guy. Nice guys should stick to nice places.
New sub here..love your work Pete. Very interesting stuff. I'm at 3:50 and had to stop, glance down the comments just to see if anyone is seeing what I'm seeing. Frederik looks like a giant sitting there next to you..Om can't stop laughing! ps Please don't take offense, not meant to be atall. Surely it's the camera angle.
A couple weeks ago our Thai friend who lives in Norway had her phone repaired in Bangkok and the repair person used the phone to steal several thousand USD. The worker had to be tracked down. Nearly all of the money is gone. The phone repair shop owner did nothing to reimburse.
Visited Bangkok as a kid with my family. One thing I remember clearly is the Thai guys were very frendly. They always played this game called "airplane" (or something similar.) They'd lift me up and say airplane!!! I could feel them checking my pockets every time. I never carreid anything in my pockets so they'd let me go.
First impression, that looked like a setup, in other words, it looked staged. She seemed to be fumbling around to undo the necklace and at anytime during that process he should have been completely aware what was happening.
He was filming and distracted plus he may have thought that getting a hug on camera made for good content so went with it. If he didn't have a camera pointed at his face he may have reacted differently
Never had anything stolen in Thailand. In fact, once I dropped some cash in Phuket on my first trip trying to put it in my money belt, and a Thai guy ran over and returned it to me! After that I ditched the money belt and went back to my normal purse with each subsequent trip and no problems ever, even when drunk in the seedier areas ...
We have experienced exactly the same thing, including a wedding ring 😞 But they were never caught.. The rule is.. Never were somthing you can't do without
Exact same thing happened to me. My first visit to Koph Samui walking home down the main street in Chaweng a moped carrying two ladyboys pulled up beside me, it was very polished. One moved behind me and the other wrapped her arm around my neck from the front just as seen in this video. I pushed them away and it was over in a few seconds as they hopped back on the moped and sped away. Only when i got back to my apartment did i realise my grandfathers gold St Christopher was no longer round my neck. Thinking back i could recall that the person that stood behind me had also patted down my pockets so it was a verty thorough job. The sentimental loss still hurts me and i'll be honest i had a bad taste ine mouth and was suspicious of all ladyboys I seen from that day on. Being niave i didn't know about the tourist police and didn't even report it. I regret not going round the gold shops asking but there were so many of them that is just seemed i needed to accept a much loved family item was gone. learned my lesson never to show any item of wealth in Thailand.
My mother usually wears a golden necklace to hang an amulet but mind you, we live in a small province. Whenever she goes to Bangkok, she takes her necklace off. P.S. (Edit) Most big cities are not safe from thieves, except for Tokyo in my opinion. Two of my friends got robbed in front of a big crowd in Paris, a friend of mine got stolen in Naples, one in Vienna, and a former colleague got robbed in the suburb of LA, just to name a few events that happened in my circle of friends. I think we should watch out wherever we go.
@Thairish Times Nobody in my circle's ever been to Dublin, so I have no say in this :) Bangkok is indeed dangerous, but Thais in general are pretty kind folk, I'd say. I usually get help from strangers wherever I go. Perhaps I looked like a village girl, that's why,... my brothers commented on the stories when I told them about my time in BKK.

Why would anyone believe its all sunshine and smiles. It's a relative poor country and so on. I like bangkok and also know the risk. That said, only a fool will try to rob me
@@ddot6963 Thailand is not a poor country (another misconception about Thailand)
I'm not sure if it was just the angle you shot it at but that guy looks to be twice your size.
he's a big fella and i'm sitting further away from the camera with a wide angle lens
Don't flash your phone around, but sometimes it's actually safer to hold it (tight) in hand than have it shoved in your back pocket. An 'ass grab' is not uncommon on Sukhumvit.
Great View, be nice if you can share the name of the condo development ..
Saw a previous video on Thong Lor vs a lesser place where you commented that you missed the older "less commercialized" Bangkok, you might want o head to Vietnam to discover more of the old Asian charm ..
thairishtimes@gmail.com and i’ll tell ya
I think the phrase
"keep your chin up!"..
is the last bit of advise he needs!😂
😂😂😂
A long gold chain of family significance worn outside a shirt while walking at nighttime in a huge foreign city? 😆 🤣
actually quite common for LBs to steal/pickpocket tourists in pattaya. especially along beach road late night. real girls don't seem to steal / pickpocket on the streets.
Nobody in their right mind goes drinking anywhere in Thailand wearing any gold never mind a very expensive gold chain like his FFS !
Yeah Mark if it didn’t go viral it could have been a different story
Great interview, although I don't understand why this would be world news and would be covered by worldwide news channels.
I never allow strangers to hug nor touch me anywhere and especially that bit of road he was mugged. Tough lesson learnt. You can wear gold, plenty of people do. I'd have clocked it and to thief did fumble about a bit. Dude was just too euphoric with the videoing and so on.
similar thing happened to my friend who was drunk and walking past a massage parlour. they took his wallet and phone.
Sorry to hear. I lived many years with my family in Asok area and we grew up watching tourists every day seeing how uncareful they could be. We have a saying within the expat community "You control Bangkok, or Bangkok controls you". I got my passport taken once and my headset out of my purse. Lesson learned.
A hard lesson,,,, never, never wear expensive jewelry on hol 😚
Pete, I'm really glad you added that last piece to your video. As you know, it's important that people know about the safety in Bangkok....actually for the whole country, in my opinion. I've lived and visited a few places around the globe, and this country is truly like no other.
yes Tom I had to mention that in the video as Bangkok is much safer than most other mega cities
Feel sorry for the poor fella with it being his Grandfathers who has passed away.
Haha Hey Arnold was absolutely amazing back in the day!
Haha yes it was one of my favourites along with The Simpsons of course
The best part about the original clip, is when he get the necklace off and says "Bye-bye!" And just fades away like a ninja in the night! Haha! Dummy!
Surely it's the camera angle.
hehe it's a combination of a big man a small man and a bad camera angle lol
Doing 3 years?...certainly a warning to other 'wanna be' thieves.
What are you on about? All they've learned is to steal the camera first next time.
A couple weeks ago our Thai friend who lives in Norway had her phone repaired in Bangkok and the repair person used the phone to steal several thousand USD. The worker had to be tracked down. Nearly all of the money is gone. The phone repair shop owner did nothing to reimburse.
Look poor and stay rich
Visited Bangkok as a kid with my family. One thing I remember clearly is the Thai guys were very frendly. They always played this game called "airplane" (or something similar.) They'd lift me up and say airplane!!! I could feel them checking my pockets every time. I never carreid anything in my pockets so they'd let me go.
Solid content !
Never allow anyone, especially sex worker touch, hug or kiss you. The theft looked obvious to me.
First impression, that looked like a setup, in other words, it looked staged. She seemed to be fumbling around to undo the necklace and at anytime during that process he should have been completely aware what was happening.
He was filming and distracted plus he may have thought that getting a hug on camera made for good content so went with it. If he didn't have a camera pointed at his face he may have reacted differently
yep agree 100%
Never had anything stolen in Thailand. In fact, once I dropped some cash in Phuket on my first trip trying to put it in my money belt, and a Thai guy ran over and returned it to me! After that I ditched the money belt and went back to my normal purse with each subsequent trip and no problems ever, even when drunk in the seedier areas ...
Great I like to hear stories like yours
Wow, the same kind of thing happened to my friend with his mobile phone
Yes, they're professional very professional. I ve been to Belgium ( Brussels) you are a long way from there!
We have experienced exactly the same thing, including a wedding ring 😞 But they were never caught.. The rule is.. Never were somthing you can't do without
He a Goofy 🤡 keep your distance to unwanted touch fool
That’s tough mate. Sorry to hear that
Sorry that happened but I don't think you'd of got it back from a pawnshop.
Tip, don't wear jewellery or watches walking around..
I remember seeing this guys video in the news lol
My mother usually wears a golden necklace to hang an amulet but mind you, we live in a small province. Whenever she goes to Bangkok, she takes her necklace off.
P.S. (Edit) Most big cities are not safe from thieves, except for Tokyo in my opinion. Two of my friends got robbed in front of a big crowd in Paris, a friend of mine got stolen in Naples, one in Vienna, and a former colleague got robbed in the suburb of LA, just to name a few events that happened in my circle of friends. I think we should watch out wherever we go.
yes exactly we have to be vigilant everywhere. For the most part I feel safer in Bangkok than I do in my home city of Dublin
He practically handed it to it 🤦♂️
I'm not surprised that happened ...
stupkid exactly....rule number 1: never wear your Gold when you go out in a Redlight district.
