    He's right. Got mine 10 years ago. It had 98k miles on it, beautiful condition, but I paid $19k for an eight year old vehicle with that mileage. Was concerned that I made a mistake. Now it's 18 years old, 263k miles, and with minimal maintenance, still running beautifully. I've done a couple things, radiator, front bearings, but it's ended being one of the cheapest vehicles I've ever owned all in all. Not as pretty now, I had five kids grow up in it. My daughter is driving it mainly now.

    Best vehicle I’ve ever owned. Grandfather gave it to me as a first car at 140k. Drove it to 290k, pizza delivery, off-roading, 10k mile plus road trips, Lexie did it all. Sadly I had to let it go due to rust since it spent its life in upstate New York. Now I own a 2020 gx460, this one’s gonna go to 400 :)

    I have a 2004 GX470 that I purchased new. It has 107,000 miles on it with a complete service history. All service work has been performed by the Lexus dealer I purchased it from. Scotty's fuel mileage estimates are pretty much spot on. It is a gas hog, but it is rock solid reliable. I get my oil changed every 5,000 miles , using only Mobil 1 full synthetic since the very first oil change. My GX has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Things don't break on it.
    I have had the timing belt replaced twice...once at 50,000 miles in 2012 because the water pump developed a leak and had to be replaced. The dealer recommended I replace the timing belt at the same time, because most of the cost of replacing both is the labor in getting to the area where they are in the engine bay. I had both replaced again in April of this year, not because there were any issues, but because it had been ten years since I had it replaced the last time. Lexus recommends the timing belt replacement every 100,000 miles OR ten years.
    One issue with the GX, plus some other Toyota models of this time period was the dashboard cracking and getting sticky. They had a special extended warranty on it for a while. I noticed a small crack in mine well after that extended warranty expired, in 2021. Being that it's Lexus and I had a very long and extensive relationship with my dealer, I called Lexus corporate about the dash. Short answer, Lexus agreed to cover the whole cost of parts and labor to replace my dashboard. My dealer gave me a new Lexus to drive for the few hours it took for them to complete the job. After 18 years of owning this vehicle, I'm still a satisfied Lexus customer.

    Personally, I would move onto the Lexus GX with the 4.6L V8 at this point. They are absolutely proven and are newer enough that issues are still some years away. 20 years+ no matter what the vehicle is you are going to start having problems, especially if that vehicle lived in the snow.
    I can say I have a 2008 Honda Odyssey EXL that has been in Texas it's entire life and it is still in excellent shape with 191,680 miles. I bought it when my oldest was three years old and now is driving it. Crazy!

      The GX460 is more complex, it also has a power 3rd row that can’t be removed to make more space, and can get stuck. For those of us who repair these ourselves, older but less complicated is better (up to a point). My current daily driver is a 98 LS400, haven’t had a professional mechanic touch it in 8 years and 100k mikes (purchased at 105k, senior owned). It has needed work, but hasn’t left me stranded once.

      2005 was the last year it accepted 87 octane via Lexus documentation. Engine was slightly tweaked beginning 2006 model years.
      I’m not a mechanic, I’m not giving sure fire proof, but every mechanic I’ve spoken to says even the 2006 and newer are perfectly fine with 87 octane. The computer systems will adjust accordingly. Though any engine knocking (highly unlikely) you should immediately begin putting premium fuel in. Supposedly many luxury brands state “premium fuel” for three reasons: 1) burns cleaner, therefor better for average emission requirements for company 2) higher octane typically boosts performance (negligible increase) 3) luxury buyers (new buyers) get the impression “premium required” means a better vehicle (marketing)

    • @samanazadi3489
      @samanazadi3489 2 роки тому +1

      @@JH-qy7zw you're right. No problem with regular fuel. As you said premium fuel (high octane) burns cleaner which means probably near 100% of the fuel in cylinder burns and it runs all the time like that because there is no knocking due to high octane.
      But with regular fuel, ECU injects more fuel to prevent knocking and that more amount of fuel keeps engine in an ideal temperature.
      I mean as long as there is no knocking your fine with regular fuel and it might be even better than premium fuel in hot days and areas. Also 87 is a very good number of octane. In some countries 80-84 octane fuel is labeled as premium fuel !!

    You can change the timing belt yourself. Take your time, use the repair manual and do step by step, it is not too hard. Shop wanted $1300 to do the timing belt change in my lexus, they were going to use mid quality after market parts. Purchased the belt, water pump, tensioners, idler pulleys, drive belts, cam and crank oil seals for just under $400, all OEM high quality parts, toyota/lexus genuin, the tensioner was Aisin, Belts all Mitsubushi etc, the best parts. So I saved $900 and the lexus runs smooth as butter. And I do not have to worry about it for another 100K. By they way, the old belt was 10 years old, had just over 100K on it and when I pulled it out, it looked almost new, great shape, markings were all gone, but the entire belt did not have a single crack, not what I was expecting, I could have probably just let it go a couple more years no problem. Shop said they could have it done in 3 hrs, would have purchased a parts kit for maybe $250, so they were basically going to charge $350hr for labor when you do the math.

    My 2002 Land Cruiser has 135,000 miles, the typical Toyota/Lexus for sale are usually in the 300,000 - 350,000 miles. (and they still sell for decent money with those miles)

    We've had ours for 164K miles with almost zero issues. I call it the Rolex Submariner of SUV's - just about indestructible. Drove a GX460 a few times, but even though it weighs 400lbs. more than a GX470, it feels even heavier - it's a brute to drive around. We're going to check out the new ones when they get released.

    They’re luxury off road vehicles. I used to take mine off roading all the time. Sold it for 7k cause the hydraulic shocks were changed out and the rear door didn’t open. Easy fix but it did its time. Needed a truck. So I got a Tacoma

    Wish we had these in Australia. Instead we get one called a Landcruiser Prado with either a 4 cyl diesel or the 4.0 litre V6 and lower spec levels than a Lexus. The top of range in this series was called a Grande which was almost Lexus spec but not quite.

    I’ve had the old GX470 and the newer GX460 the GX460 is much better, drives better and is more reliable. Better timing chain (not a belt) and better suspension (adjustable suspension on the 470 was known to fail)… the greatest SUV ever made is the Lexus GX460 then the Lexus GX470 and then in 3rd place is the 4 runner

      Which model is your gx460? I am planning to get one. Currently have a gx470. Are all the gx460s equally good? New GX is at least 62-63. Low mileage used ones are about 35-40.. is it better to get earlier models?

    • @GXMAN16
      @GXMAN16 2 роки тому

      @@juchou2983 I bought a 2016 used with 56K miles and its got 70K now, I do all the maintenance myself and so far its solid knock on wood. Depending on what you need and what's a deal breaker to you as far what you want out the vehicle. Buying used you kind of stuck with what options a used might or might not have.
      So the 2011-2021 all have the same infotainment system, which is basically 2011 technology, and I'm not exaggerating. So if you want some new tech like android auto and more updated screen, 2022-2023 is what you want. I doubt there are any 2022 new left to order so either 2022 used or order a 2023.
      I'd say all 460s are equally good, there has not been any mechanical changes to the powertrain since 2011, so doesn't matter if its a 2011 or 2023 its still a 4.6L making 301hp and same milage. Having said that I do believe the newer ones in my anecdotal experience do shift better, I've driven a 2020 and it goes through the gears much better, I feel like my 2016 constantly bogs down and doesn't downshift, on uphill especially. So recent models might have better transmission tuning. The newer ones do have improved steering feel and suspension, and will have better standard options.
      2011-2014 are super ugly, but have the best clearance, same approach angle as a 4Runner, so if you plan to ever off-road it, its a something to consider. 2015-2019 are worse, there is a risk of ripping front bumper off on any intermediate trail, so things like aftermarket bumpers are needed. 2020+ you will 100% need to cut the bumper as it the clearance is so bad, they impede the vehicle off road ability, yea you can go on a dirt road that any Corolla can, but any kind of deep ruts you will break or rip/off that giant front bumper. For the snow I recommend putting aggressive tires on.
      If buying used you're limited to the options they have. For example in older models only Luxury trim came with heated steering wheel, which is what I wanted, but Luxury only come with rear air suspension, which I didn't care for, as air suspension rides more bumpier and is giant gimmick. The crawl control will be extremely rare in used so if you want crawl control much easier to order it in a new car. Luckily you can DIY crawl control, as its just a module you can switch out in any 2011-2021, not for 2022s. Lastly I recommend getting one with Mark Levingston audio system, its one of the best in Automotive industry, its better than the Harmon Kardon system in my $120k BMW M5. Mine is the Luxury trim with Mark Levingston, I'm missing the adaptive cruise control and auto high beams, which I think 2017 and up start having them. I believe newer ones come with heated steering wheel in lower trims.
      Lastly for real, if buying used there is a ton of knowledge on the forums, all the issues are well documented. Depending how used, but check for rust, thats number killer on any Toyota/Lexus, check for leaking or seeping transfer case, and if its below 70k miles, its a good idea to change the plugs and check for oil stains on the plugs. 70k/7years is the power train warranty, oil stains on the plugs means some gasket is leaking, so it can be fixed under warranty. Normally the plugs don't get changed till 120K miles, and at that point you're footing the bill.

      @@GXMAN16 thank you for the info.. so the drive train is same through out the years. I need something super reliable and I travel a lot. But I am not really tech savvy.. all the newer adas features seems kind of unnecessary complexity to me. I will probably get a 2015 with less than 100k miles.. once again really appreciate you taking the time to give out all the info..

    • @GXMAN16
      @GXMAN16 2 роки тому

      @@juchou2983 Yes the drivetrain is the same for the entire 2nd Gen 2011-2023 its the 4.6L V8 with Full Time AWD and 6 speed Auto, for 2024 there will be a release of 3rd Gen GXs with the updated powertrain, probably will be Turbo V6 that we see in the new Tundras and Sequioas.
      If you can't find below 100k miles whether it's 15 or 16,17 whatever your budget allows it should be a good deal, as most GX460s unlike the 4Runners are unabused, remain stock and normally serviced at the Lexus dealership. Based on my own experiences buying one close to 60k, the front rotors warped almost immediately, but were still go enough to get resurfaced, the pads be close to get changed, brake fluid flushed, power steering fluid flushed and if its close to 100k, all the things I've mentioned needed to be changed and set money aside to change the water pump, as other Toyota V6 and V8, it's the same pump that likes to fail between 90-130k miles.
