Awesome. I commuted to USC everyday for classes and took this exact route sometimes. Most times I would take the 90fwy to stockard through crenshaw and go to the campus. I often took this freeway for interviews. My dream was to work at the First Interstate Bank building(never happened). I must've interviewed at about half these buildings in downtown LA.

in la cars don't rust out. there hung on till they don't pass smog which takes a while. and esp then the smog laws only effect 1975 and newer so people were probably holding onto their cars to avoid the hastle.
I love this!!! I'm so glad this was filmed, and in incredible quality as well! Provides zoomers like myself a window into the past. DTLA looks so weird without the U.S Bank Tower! lol
The Mustang at 1:37 appears to be a 1987 or later one. EDIT: it’s a 1984-1986 LX hatchback. Looks to be a 2.3 judging by the wheels and lack of 5.0 badges.

I grew up driving in the 80's - and remember driving with all these other cars around me. The one clip has a late 70's era honda civic that was exactly like my friend's - same color too. But the colors in here don't match well at all. The green road signs were almost the identical color they are today. It could be the original film equipment or aging of the film. Colors are more muted with more green/brown hue.
Lol 1980s America was notorious for sky high crime rates. Lots of drugs and murders. Even if the crime problem is bad now its no where near as bad as the 80s.

No US Tower Bank yet, so has to be before 88
At least mid-late 1987, I spotted a few '88-'91 Honda Civics in traffic

Loved seeing the 68’ mustang and the Porsche
If this had 1980s music to it it would be even better!
Ah, bumper to bumper on the southbound 405 I see..nothing has changed!

and i think it takes more then a year to erect a skyscaper. so maybe around 88 but my guess 87
It's still in the 80s tho 🙈
The 80s was weird lol... a mix of 60s-70s cars blended with the boxy and compact 80s cars.
in la cars don't rust out. there hung on till they don't pass smog which takes a while. and esp then the smog laws only effect 1975 and newer so people were probably holding onto their cars to avoid the hastle.
Yeah, and in the 1990s, there was a mixture of cars assembled in the 1970s, 1980s, and/or 1990s (being driven on the roads of Los Angeles).
1990s was weird lol, it didn’t know if it wanted to be a repeat of the 80s or be their own thing.

Footage from the 1980s is not "old", in the truest sense of the word; think of it this way: the millennials aren't "old" people, now, are they?!?
Really like the way this is shot. How did they stabilize the camera back then?
Super super super luv the old footages
Wow this is sweet 1980s traffic in excellent condition child vehicles there.
A lot less traffic than when I moved there in 1990. Reminds me of my drive to Westwood when I worked for Bullock’s Department store.

The date must be mid 1988. Al 3:08 the ARCO tower is being built.
Back then, cars had a REALLY strong gas smell. So people were sufficating back then from the gas. Even I can smell it from the screen.
The good old days before those catalytic converters
smog laws came into effect in 1975, it took a while for those older cars to cycle out of the road because they don't rust out.
