Here is my 2 cents. Testing canister topped stoves for fuel efficiency requires a tremendous amount of work. I found that calm conditions don't tell a compelling story. A slight breeze (2-4 mph) will show a startling difference between the different stoves. So I would start with testing in windy conditions and ignore calm conditions as the knowledge gained in calm conditions may be of minimal value. Love the work that you are doing, keep it up.

Fantastic series and thoughtful insights into not only caloric density by weight, but also by volume. My suggestion to add to your lab is a bomb calorimeter then you could measure the theoretical calories in vs how many of those calories were actually used by the body. For example, you showed that the highest number of calories by weight and density is olive oil and you showed the result of a pure olive oil diet (a roll of toilet paper - hinting most of the calories would pass through you). I have read that 30% of the calories in whole nuts are not used by the body. One of the possible reasons is the nuts not being chewed into particles small enough for complete digestion. So, in theory, peanut butter has more “usable” calories than peanuts. The bomb calorimeter could measure the “input” and the “output” calories and derive the “usable” calories. How many more “usable” calories are in 1,000 calories of peanut butter vs whole peanuts? Maybe someone has done a paper on this? Just another factor to consider in search for optimizing “usable” calories vs weight vs volume. Your series has been an eye opener. Thanks for all the time, and effort, in your fantastic series.

On another note! Try check out some thermometer stickers if you haven't already! I use them to save fuel on a trip. The ones I have weigh 0.26 grams and work fairly well once stuck to one of my pots. I've found heating my water to 176 degrees f is more than hot enough for coffee and rehydrating meals while only about 78% of the fuel a full boil would require.

I'm going with the trail designs keg f beer can number fuelled by bio ethanol for my UK coast to coast thru hike as opposed to my MSR pocket rocket 2 and 220gm can of gas on the premise that it will be lighter in time than lugging an empty can round (case of use - 600ml of water boiled 3 times a day, pot is just the large pot from the soto thermostack)?
