It would be great to hear tips on handling situations where students are not in the video or have the video off, getting students to show up on time or return from break on time, keeping pets and other distractions out of the room, maintain a quiet environment and what about loud noisy daycare environments. When you look at most classrooms in the gallery mode, it is full of movement and very, very busy. Thanks for any tips!
Hi Kathie! Thanks for watching and commenting. I understand the struggles you are facing this year as a teacher. Unfortunately, there is no one size fits all for every situation. Have you tried using a reward system to keep students focused and on task? I like using a digital sticker board for students. Class Dojo also works well virtually.
1. To get students to show up on time, start with a fun group game like a round of Kahoot or Quizziz. 2. For students who have videos off, ask yourself if having their videos off is helpful for them. Are they shy? Is there a reason for them to have cameras on (or off)? Consider requiring some activities for videos on, such as discussions, and videos off, such as lectures or quiet work time. 3. For pets: include pets into the virtual classroom community. Refer to their pets and recognize their pets as extensions of themselves. It will increase engagement and make the class more fun. 4. For a quiet environment, continue to repeat that "we need to hear each other." Tell kids, "it's hard to understand you. Can you move to a space where we can hear what you are saying?" Kids will buy into this as much as possible, but there is only so much they can control as children. If the background is too noisy, negotiate with the family to provide a quiet space.
Thank you so much for your videos. I´ve found them useful. I´m an English instructor and I'm teaching a class for future teachers about Classroom Management. I'm using this video for it. Any other suggestions are welcome. Thank you very much!
Hi Lorie! Thanks for watching and commenting. It is always nice to know that other teachers enjoy watching my videos and find the information helpful. This is definitely a different kind of school year! I hope everything goes smoothly for you and that my videos can be a resource for you throughout the year.
Hi Megan! I’m really enjoying your videos. Thanks so much. Can you suggest some virtual classroom jobs, I can assign to my 3rd graders. I have a time keeper, physical activity leader during our 5min break, and pledge of allegiance speaker. Any others?
Hi Shelia! Thanks for watching. You could have student jobs where students lead some of the activities. For example, you could have a fitness coach who leads the class in an exercise one or two times per day. You could also have a brain break leader who leads the class in a brain break. Another one could be the morning meeting leader who leads a virtual morning meeting. By having students lead them, it would take some pressure off you.
Thank you sooo much for this video. these tips will really help our teachers a lot. God bless you more for doing this. you are such a blessing....I am also looking for video That Sets and Model High Expectations/standard.
My high school students sit in the same classroom on campus for my online class. I work from my home office. So when they ask questions, it will echo and there will also be some background noise. Many times I have a hard time listening clearly. Thanks.
Hi Ken! If you're getting an echo, it is likely because the microphone is picking up feedback from the speakers. Both you and your students should try wearing headphones when meeting virtually.
Hi! Thanks for watching. Vestal's 21st Century Classroom specializes in upper elementary and middle school classrooms. If I had students doing what you have described, I would definitely be getting parents involved asap. You may also want to consider a rewards program. Incentivize students staying for the entire session with some type of reward they will want and buy into at the end of the session.
Thanks so much for this.
BTW, to those who are watching, set your playback speed to 1.5x
Thanks for watching!

Funny, I have been thinking same! I also thought a "weather person" might be good. Yes, timekeeper is good.

You're welcome! I hope these tips help!
How do you get older teenagers to engage and pay attention when they are just turning the mic off and stepping away from the computer and don't' care?
