Seeing an album that’s 20+ songs makes me feel tired just looking at it
Same i can only tolerate that amount of tracks for certain experimental albums. I'm not gonna seat through 20 tracks of a trap album I can already predict how the production and the flows are gonna be (there are exceptions of course, but for most absolutely no)
@@bruh......2005 I can basically guess your entire music personality off of this comment lol.
You probably like: Kanye, Tyler the creator, Denzel Curry, asap Rocky, Travis Scott, Kendrick. Maybe playboi carti/Young Thug.
You probably hate: Drake, Lil Durk, lil baby, Youngboy, Nav, Polo G and most likely call a majority of them “generic trap”
@@Fent- Nav and Drake are fine, even overhated at times. But You would never see me hating on Polo G and Durk lol (They are one of the exceptions I was talking about). Those are probably one of the most interesting rappers in the melodic trap scene imo. Making baseless assumptions when you don't really know someone is kinda weird my guy.
@Fent hiphop isn't the only genre there is
There’s only a small handful of artists that can pull off albums like that. Kendrick is one of them I will say for sure
We need more artists like Kendrick Lamar and Tyler, the creator who really create a concept and an atmosphere, now people don't really get into albums, they just expect a popular song but they do not invest their time in an album as an experience outside the music itself.
even if kendrick dropped a 3 hour album, i would listen
@@jaroldinho3923 yeah cause hes a great artist / you probably meat ride him
i agree tho, its good that we have some shorter projects that have good songs althroughout such as no thank you by little simz, tos by jermaine, even lyfe by yeat lmao (which i think is his best project yet even though it hardly compares to the first two ive mentioned)
there are ton of those artists you just need to look outside mainstream hiphop
I got u bro new song on my page⚡️💕
fax so many artists now try to make 2 good songs and 30 song long albums rather than 15 song albums entirely comprised of great songs
Lil Baby is a prime example of that
That will come back. All the best albums have under 15 tracks aside from a couple exceptions (early em, ready to die). Kanye’s early shit had over 15 tracks but had a ton of skits.
12-15 song albums*
@@sithxle7546 but Lil Baby went 0/20 😂
Lil Baby & others should take lessons from Lupe's Drogas Wave, a masterpiece album of 24 songs. Quality > quantity
As an 18 year old, it saddens me so much that people around my age don’t care about albums and an album experience. There’s just something beautiful to the concept of being able to put multiple songs together, you can get crazy creative. But people just don’t care about that creativity, and about something unique, and that sucks so much. Makes artists like me, who literally want to make conceptual or great album experiences, so discouraged from doing so.
I'm 19 and I feel you it's sad
As a 16 year old myself, I hear you. It seems like the a lot of people of my generation don’t appreciate actual good music.
i fully agree about this issue; i'm 15 and i've only recently started listening to full albums, and seeing 20+ song albums really sucks sometimes. if i wanna listen to an album, i don't want it to be a 5 hour experience because, even though that would be awesome, i have school and homework and other responsibilities so i can't just sit down and enjoy and album sometimes
bro you’re 15. i promise you are not too busy
@@illusionssx 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
@@illusionssx bro why are you gatekeeping being busy LMAO
The last classic 20 song plus album was Hoodie szn imo and almost every track is 🔥should have won a Grammy 2018
Firstly, I've never seen a 5 hour long album. On average they are about an hour. Also, you can always start listening to an album and come back to it later. They're not like films where you have to watch it from the beginning to know what's going on.
I do want to point out that "long" albums can be deceiving. take Madvillainy as an example: its a 22 song album, but filled with skits, and shorter songs, making it only around 45 minutes - or perfect for a cohesive album experience. this could be a middle ground for having good numbers but still good experiences.
Regarding classic 20 song projects, I would argue that Faces and The Life of Pablo should be in that conversation. However, I do agree with your general thoughts about the current state of music. It's sad to see so many artists give in to this 20+ song format and sacrifice quality in the process. I'm a firm believer that creating quality albums will yield artists more longevity as opposed to just pushing out as much material as possible. It's the reason why guys like Kendrick can take massive hiatuses and still take the game over when they come back. Meanwhile someone like Dababy is constantly putting out low quality, redundant material, and he's falling off at a historical rate.
Correct take
This is why Lupe is an amazing artist, he's shown he can create masterpieces out of long albums like Drogas Wave (24 songs) or short ones like Drill Music in Zion (10 tracks). Quality over quantity
and tetsuo and youth! big ol longie but it's kind of a concept album (and a good one at that
trash
@@Spoonkid222 tetsuo and youth has some of the best rap songs ever but also some lows in there
streaming is a very double edged sword. For music nerds like me, its incredible because i get access to so much material and i can explore much much easier than ever before. But for the casual music fan, it just encourages comfortability, safe choices and chasing trends. The sad truth is that the number of people who genuinely care about lyrics, meaning, and cohesive albums is much much less than the amount of people who just want to hear something pleasant and move on.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to hear a good sounding album sonically, opposed to wanting some conceptual retrospective think piece album to dissect. The latter can be very corny at times, especially the fans it attracts.
agree, the main problem is that lots of artists don't care about the quality of music as they do about the sales and the money, great podcast btw
The attention span has decreased every generation so personally i love an album with a runtime of like 30-45mins at max UNLESS IT'S A CONCEPT ALBUM and the 7 song concept was so good too
i think perfect album tracklist lenght should be 8 to 13 (it can be 15 tracks long with interludes etc)
Agreed
If I see an album with more then 15 (without counting interludes) tracks, depending on the artist I'm not gonna subject myself to it. I feel that's the problem with some trap albums today, too much filler tracks that should've been taken down and deluxe albums that add absolutely nothing to the previous record.
@@bruh......2005 there’s no such thing as trap music today. It’s an obsolete genre. I’ve heard niggas call Travis Scott…from Houston Texas….trap music. Like what lol.
@@Fent- some songs on Heroes & Villains are definitely trap
The runtime is also really important!
For example Madvilliany is 21 tracks but only like 40 minutes. On the other hand there are also projects like All eyes on me or Life after death, Speakerboxx/ The love below which are the highest quality as well but are over 2 hours. For me an artist has to be really genius to put out 20+ song album and make it worth a listen. It is also really scary that that are peole who ignore albums as a whole. I personally cant remember something more mind blowing than listening to Illmatic or The College Dropout, The 36 chambers and all these amazing records and I wish that more people will explore the genius of these projects in the future.
Great video guys, keep up the content!
A great 24 songs album is Faces by Mac. I only skip San Francisco from time to time.
But overall it’s a perfect exemple of a well executed long album
I can't get into it, the music is very polarising to just passively listen to. I prefer swimming but is there a way I can get into the album itself?
I feel like 20 -30 songs only works for an album experience is if there skits and short instrumentals such as madviallian I feel that listener fatigue also effects this heavily
Tbh for me it’s the artist and society we live in, everyone begs for they’re favorite artists to drop an album or more music (including me) and when the artist just drops an album they didn’t really try on then ppl don’t listen to the album in a whole. I’m not tired of long albums if the artist actually tries, but I think us as fans need to understand that these ppl are actually human beings that need time to actually come out with something genuine and something that the artists are actually proud of. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I had this thought exactly. If Donda was stripped down to a minimalist experience zeroing in on a specific theme, it would be a perfect 10. I made a playlist of 12 songs that sufficiently make the point of the album.
True
"Recent" Masterpiece Albums w/ over ~20 songs:
2021: Little Simz - SIMBI (19)
2017: Big KRIT - 4eva Is A Mighty Long Time (22)
2014: Mac Miller - Faces (25)
All of those are boring
Simbi kinda has a few interludes bro so it is kinda like 16-17
Still pretty cohesive and W faces and 4eva
Whole Lotta Red
Lil Yachty understood this with “let’s start here”
Something I’ve always appreciated from XXXTentacion is that he was brief with his music. He understood that time is money and didn’t make the experience a drag. I much rather want more from an artist than to get tired of them.
his songs are too short and unfinished
We need more diverse production.
Mainstream rappers will always rap about bullshit but what sets each mainstream rapper apart is production.
SWITCH UP THE 808 PATTERN! GET WEIRD WITH THE MELODIES! EVERYBODY GOT A GUITAR & A FLUTE, THEN GO GET A HARP AND A ACCORDION!!
exactly, thats what made the soundcloud era so fire. And then guess what, the weird beats made the artists perform better! People love to say the producers carry but its crazy what a good beat can bring out. People dont understand man. But anyways if you looking for diverse production turn to the current underground.
I did my undergrad dissertation on this. Where artists, and labels especially, go wrong, is that they think they can just put out as much content as possible and saturate the playlists for maximum streams and profit. But if the album experience isn't properly considered, then the music reviewers and taste makers won't fuck with it, and the fact is, they're the listeners who will buy the vinyl/shirt/tickets.
This is why I love 17 by xxxtentacion so much. 11 songs 22 minutes can go through this album so many times and never get bored of it
I think X's eps are way better then his albums, but it's also a good example. Even if I didn't like the album atleast it was straight to the point on what it was trynna achieve, it didn't felt dragged out.
17 is the most boring album I have ever heard
17 is so unfinished
I never noticed you had such low subscribers man, it’s criminal you don’t have at least 300k, you guys are some of the best on this platform
-faces by Mac Miller
-three sided tape volume one by lil ugly mane
-man plays the horn by cities Aviv
-LP! OFFLINE by jpegmafia
-Whole lotta of red by Carti
And many others could be considered classics in there own rights
I only recently started really listening to full albums of songs that I liked, and I’ve found some songs I had no idea existed and I’ve heard a lot of albums that were so fulfilling to listen to. Listen to all you can to make sure you’ve found the right music
this guy disrespected Ok ok off of DONDA, Yatchy and Rooga went insane.
Less people listening to albums is WAY more about more people listening to playlists than it is about album quality imo.
I like 20 track albums but it has to have versatility. Nobody wants the same production all the way through
Wasn’t gonna make a vid on this but y’all inspired me. I felt this way for nearly a year now.
It shouldn't matter how long it is as long as it keeps me entertained, stevie wonder kept me entertained me for an hour and 45 minutes but if an artist can only keep me entertained for 30 minutes than that's what they should do
Alfredo by Freddie Gibbs is a perfect example of a flawless tracklist album. You get 35 minutes of nothing but QUALITY (unlike most of the mediocare artists these days)
i think the underground not doing huge numbers helps with their overall quality and respect as they dont have to stuff their albums and get to hold their own vision
@user-ss5bu3hc1r true, but at the same time, I'm getting so tired of these mainstream casual audiences always ignoring these great albums that are not that big and later complain on how music today isn't as good then it was back then😒
@@iangarcia1585 so many great artists that aren't popular and then u have AJR doing numbers. Who are pretty awful artists. Also check out foxtails - fawn

As a kid who grew up during the early 2000s, rap albums that were 18-20 tracks were my favorite. It felt like I was getting two songs per dollar spent. I haven't felt that way about albums that length in a long time, though. The first album I purchased was Eminem's MMLP, and the last album I purchased that was that long was Game's R.E.D album in like 2011 lol. Even by 2012 or 2013 when MMLP2 dropped, that one has SO many skips.
I love streaming, but I do miss when artists were able to do the long run times and have it feel worth it. Without CD sales being the main goal though, I don't think we'll ever have that again, aside from my maybe concept albums.
Very strongly agree. I’ve not listened to albums bc of their length. They really have to stop
Ye needed to feed us though, his 2018 albums and Jesus Is King were very short. Also dropped nothing significant in 2020
Yep, people completely ignore this fact lol
Nah bro, he sacrificed quality over quantity. He could have released a 12 track album and release the fillers as throwaway singles cause there's a lot of tracks that are subpar
Not hiphop but SOS by SZA has been number one for like 9 weeks with a 23 song album. I think artists can put out a successful long project if the demand is there.
she hasnt put out a project in like 6 years thats why
I’m split on the length. I don’t come back to albums, i listen to it a few times and add the songs i like to my playlist, so when it’s 20+ songs, i like that it’s a lot for me to choose from, but it’s also very inconvenient and i lose interest halfway through and will have to come back to give some songs another chances
For the first 2 months of Donda being out I listened the whole way through 10-20 times
let’s be real we did that bc of the rollout and clb rollout n the whole beef. when’s the last time you played donda from front to back?
@@exotic_blitz7747the only time I played it from front to back is when it dropped in august 2021, no replay value
@@exotic_blitz7747 probably last year. But last year was also probably the last time I listen to any album the whole way through. Got nothing to do with the clb beef I was bumping clb too.
Donda is painful to listen to the whole way through. Why would someone want 2 hours of songs that have a very similar sound, inconsistent quality, many songs that are 5+ minutes long (despite not needing to be) etc. Donda has plenty of good songs, but as a whole album, I have no plans of listening to it again the whole way through. 808s is my most listened to album of all time tho, love that shit.
I've been a huge Kanye fan since he was just a producer on Roc a Fella...
Bought physical copies of every album he put out physically.
Donda has like 4 good songs.
Same for CLB.
This video speaks to the problems with both albums.
from an audience perspective, I feel in the past decade people have constantly had their attention span decreased. Social media platforms like Instagram, ticktock and even UA-cam seem to have constantly pushed the emphasis on capturing the audience attention within that first 10 seconds. Younger generations are dealing with reels and ticktocks now and if they're bored, they just swipe next. I feel this plays into the consumption of music as well. People don't have the attention span to listen to such long albums.
Not a rap album but SOS by SZA will be the next classic album with over 20 songs from years to come!
TikTok generation created a culture of only listening to trendy song vs listening to albums. I bought my niece (14 years old) a record player and LPs to appreciate the artist’s work.
I'm 20 years old and last year King Iso dropped his Get Well Soon album and I have played that album more than 20 times in one year. It is such a great album and I really highly suggest listening to it. It'll really change ur perspective on a lot.
love the videos boys keep it up when is that top 10 rappers of all time list coming?😄
If an album if like longer than 18 songs I end up just listening to it in like 4 song periods over like a couple days rather than just listening to it in full as it releases. I find I have to do this especially in trap albums (lil baby, trippie red etc)
I listened to 4eva is a mighty long time by big krit a while back. It is probably the best album from the past couple of years when it comes to having a lengthy tracklist with over 20 songs while having no filler
what im saying. fav hiphop album since good kid maad city
4eva is good despite the tracklist because it is so damn diverse.
Like damn, one of the few +20 songs albums that doesn't sound the damn same to me
Another problem is that the new generation of rappers can’t rap about anything that isn’t hoes, money and opps. I know the argument is old but it’s still relevant. Most of the new popping rappers can’t hold anyone’s attention on a song that’s 5+ minutes long and instead they all have 2-3 minute long songs where the verse and chorus structure are all the same and then all 20 songs on their albums are that. Same structure, short, same topics. That’s why it gets exhausting listening to them
I think their consumers are much worse. They will shun anything that’s artistic or lyrical, and big up all the synthetic shit they love because they have short attention spans. Really, it’s the industry’s fault.
This is literally lil baby. He ruined hiphop
i'm 16, and i listen full to an album for the first time like 2 month ago, and now i listen to albums all the time, before that i listen to only playlist with songs i listened before in sm or spotyfy recomendations, my generation is accustomed to listen to singles or hits all the time, i think that is a problem of the audience not from the artist, there are good new albums all the time.
sorry for the bad english im argentinian
18 and it's only in the past year I've been getting into albums. Even with that, i do get kinda excited seeing an album I'm interested in is like 10 or less tracks...
I remember when songs used to br 5 minutes long. Nowadays Long track list and short songs really reflects on how our attention spans are shortened
14:04 Luca came with the analogies. 🥶🥶🥶
The truth is from a mainstream standpoint there’s little to no downside to dropping huge albums with filler, the more tracks you add the more streams you get, the hits will still hit no matter how much bloat you add, so if you aren’t releasing for legacy or trying to make perfect albums there’s no reason not to add bloat. Yes when artists are more concise like Tyler, Kendrick, etc their fans really appreciate that, but that doesn’t matter to these other rappers, they are trying to make money and like y’all said people don’t really listen to albums anyways so there’s no point in mainstream artists dropping concise projects unless they want to be the goat. Y’all saying that “you should drop albums with less songs because you need to keep your audience captivated” but you don’t tho, y’all said yourselves people don’t listen to the entire albums so why does it need to be captivating? I’m starting to get more into the album experience so I would enjoy it if artists like trippie would drop a concise album that is really caring about quality, I hope he does that on ALLTY5 but I don’t think that’s going to happen, trippie has had bloat on his albums for a long time now. I think y’all answered your own questions, artists drop bloated track lists because it makes them the most money, and fans are ok with bloated track lists because they don’t listen to full albums anymore, it’s just how it is. If artists want to start dropping concise track lists they will do so, but like y’all showed that doesn’t make them much money most of the time and for most of the mainstream rappers that’s all they care about so I don’t see the mainstream ever going back to concise albums (of course there will always be outliers tho)
Honestly, unless it’s an artist that I’ve been DYING for them to drop, I next to never listen to 20+ albums on release day. That’s wayyy too intimidating of an amount for me to just drop everything and sit through their album for over an hour. Personally I think the sweet spot is between 13-17 songs on a solid album
One of the only 20+ song albums I fw is TLOP4 (including deluxe) by Pi’erre Bourne, but that’s because the tape was entirely from the mind and talent of ONE person and every track seamlessly transitioned into the next, creating a uniquely cohesive and hypnotic experience for the listener. Pi’erre is SO underrated as an artist - the melodies of his beats sound simultaneously nostalgic yet futuristic and his layered autotuned singing flows on them perfectly.
there is a lot of great 20+ albums you only fw that?
@@sammcmeekin8897 I should’ve said one of the only ones. I fw TLOP (Kanye), Donda, Dedication 2, & Da Drought 3. But other than those, I can’t think of any other 20+ song albums I fw. Which ones did you have in mind?
Unrelated to Hip Hop but Pink Floyd in my opinion are the masters of knowing what makes an album a masterpiece. All their albums are short listens but really dense and diverse. Dark Side of the Moon was on the billboard top 100 for about 30 years straight and its only 40 minutes long.
Isn't the wall long as hell
@@thrpotatoasfgfejfidieiidkr7071 Yes that's true that is one of their longer albums but 90% of their catalog are albums that have a 40-50 minute run time. The Wall is still an excellent album nonetheless.

I feel like BabyTron has mastered the art of putting out a 20+ song album. Ive listened to Bin Reaper 3 New Testament multiple times all the way through and I love it. Although it has skips, I feel like they are dramatically out weighed by the sheer amount of quality on the record.
I am 17 rn and before the forever story i never listened to a full album, since then i listen often to a full album (metro jid kendrick...) especially if i try to get into a new artist i am not listening to their best songs anymore.
thats really good. It’s impossible to fully comprehend how great for example Kanye is if you only listen to his most streamed songs. You have to listen to his albums and see how he made these genre bending albums.

And of course kanyes discography is a must listen too. Please try to not think about his recent statements because that can make your album experience worse. Kanye is truly one of the best artists of this generation and you should just listen to his albums in order (he has the most classics out of any rapper) and separate the art from the artist
I love albums, but it has to be a concept somewhere, of course the personal is also part of it, in what season does the album drop, how do you feel right now and so on. Of course. The strategy is also a big point.
Great convo!
The problem isn't the length of the album. There are double albums that are classics. The problem is the quality of music. Artists are clearly stuffing the albums with filler and junk to pad their numbers.
Lou’s opinion on Donda is a bit harsh, the only songs that should’ve been trimmed are Remote Control, Junya, and Tell The Vision and I think Tell the Vision was there to give money to Pop Smokes family so I forgive him for that. Also, I think Pusha T’s verse from Donda shouldn’t have been cut and Never Abandon Your Family and Life of the Party should’ve been on the original release so therefore it’s not that bloated in my eyes
Albums have become chores. Listening shouldn’t be a chore.

There are plenty of unnecessary songs in there

@@thrpotatoasfgfejfidieiidkr7071 I can only think of 1 and it’s an interlude
I think you could make a video comparing the albums by decades 80’s top 10 vs 90’s top10 or just a tier list with every top10/5 albums from the 80s till 20s
Most people are not listening to an entire album in one sitting, so artists are likely pilling more content into albums so they can reach wider ranges of people. There's a higher chance of capturing a fan with one of twenty songs compared to having 12 cohesive tracks. I'd blame social media and the lowering of intention spans.
Yachty’s newest album isn’t even close to his lowest selling album. It sold twice as much first week as Michigan Boy Boat and 5000 more first week than Lil Boat 3. Though Yachty does not do the best first week numbers, his last project showed an improvement

I’m 15 and started listening to hip hop around October 2022, first album was Igor. Since then I think I’ve listen to around 75-100 albums.
Igor isn’t hip hop
But… it is
Igor is more experimental and i noticed the younger kids like it because it’s trendy.. when Igor was released in 2019 it didn’t get that same love. I liked that Tyler made a song about a boyfriend
Greydon Square - Type 3: Omniverse is a 30 song masterpiece. It's niche and very underground, but well worth the listen. Not a single miss on there
The only good album with 20+ songs that I can think of is 2001 by Dr.Dre.
That was made 24 years ago in 1999.
The labels are to blame. Corporatization of the music industry is killing it. Greed over art.
I feel like it’s slowly becoming less and less of a problem. I personally don’t have too much of a problem with it because I have extreme patience with it. For example I got through indigo in one sitting (over two HOURS). I can’t wait for a change going back to quality though. I’m in my late teens and I’ve listened to over 570 albums. I’m probably not the best example but I still agree
I will say with Donda, I created my own 13 track version that is all bangers. But fuck me I'll never listen to that full album as is.
I did the same with the Carter V.
With todays societal values, we want music and want it now. In mainstream, if you don’t drop consistently (if you’re not a Drake, Beyoncé, Cole, Kendrick, etc), we may need or want new music but it’s more acceptable as long as it’s quality. All other artists don’t have that luxury, and don’t know when a hit is gonna be a hit. They have to strike, we just hope it’s again, quality.
When NFR finally covers my music, that’s when I know I made it 🔥
I totally agree with this, I've been saying this exact thing for a long time.... It would have been MBDTF 2.0 if Kanye had cut donda down to roughly 10 or 12 songs.
Yall might have came in clutch. I am doing a school project arguing that streaming is bad for music. I am 3 minutes in and this video just might be a goldmine
yall should bring back free smoke but except this time with rappers and debate who's better and why some interesting criterias would be

The Donda deluxe is perfect tracklisting. Ends after 20 songs then has bonus ones in the back you’re not meant to listen to apart of the experience
Pusha T is the perfect example of quality over quantity with Daytona
18 should be the MAX anything over is overboard.

Albums are the best way to listen to music and become attached to the artist and even the genre itself. There are so many great albums short ones long ones but because of the length people’s attention span is lower than the duration of the albums. The reason some artists do it is the numbers they want to provide more songs to have a high chance for one to go viral.
the way I see it is y’all can have these 20-25 songs albums and u can have ur bigger streams but don’t expect ur albums to be on any end of year lists. I think my end of year list vid only had like 1 album over 20 songs bc it was a double disk
I’d prefer a 9-12 track album over 20+ with just fillers
Another idea is what if it’s label contracts. Yeah as an artist you need to produce this x amount of projects under us, but also this x amount of songs.
Quantity over creativity honestly is where we’re at right now.
Yo the ghost face killah fishscale classic shout-out outta nowhere is why I fuck with this channel these kids know they shit
I listen to albums I own.
I buy a hard copy.
If you've got an album, I'll listen but if you've got 2 good tracks, I'll stream those tracks.
You're right, 20 song albums can work, but the quality has to be there.
If it's a good album, I buy it.
Period.
The market reflects consumerism on both sides of the equation.
Supply and demand.
2001 by Dr. Dre is a perfect f*ckin album 😎🍁
"You think we're just fucking nerds?" - Anthony 😂💯 Yes, I agree. I really can't stand how long albums have become. I'd rather listen to Daytona or Jay's 4:44 multiple times in a row over one of these recent bloated, generic albums.
Didn’t Ant say WLR is a classic, and also WLR is 24 songs, so I’d say WLR is the closest, and how influential it is, it probably is a classic.
Donda’s length is annoying but it’s still a great experience and uses its length fairly effectively. There were much worse offenders you could’ve put on the thumbnail lol
Big Chris Brown fan. I no longer listen to his albums for this reason. 40/50 songs bruh!? WTF!?
