    Tip for getting the white translucent plexy glass. Use an orbital sander and sand the inside of the plexy. It turns it white and still lets light through. Looks much better than the spray paint.

    Thanks for posting this vid, Steve. A few months back, I decided to build this TARDIS as a photo booth for my Son's wedding reception. Though I am a computer professional, I suck at carpentry; that is until I started building this thing. Now I'm planning other tasks. I had some problems with getting things square and using the cleats at the top of the posts. So I changed things up with door hinges! Replacing the cleats with hinges allowed the thing to tighten up really nice but allows for assembly and disassembly. I also added cleats at the base of the first, second and third tiers to square them and insure nothing falls on drunken heads at the reception. Thanks again! I'll post a few shots of the reception in June. Keep up the great videos. SamK

    I gave this a go, and since the comments section is full of people asking for materials lists and cost, here's a quick rundown of what it took me. (really recommend tablesaw instead of any handsaw, cuts came out a lot better)

      You could easily find reusable used wood, from pallets or other things, from Craigslist or Freecycle or similar websites, to do the project for much cheaper, as the lumber is the most expensive part of most projects. We've made lots of things from reclaimed wood, from a chicken coop to a garden shed to bookshelves!

      This is fantastically helpful thank you. For the columns did you keep it 1x6 (5.5" nominal) ? However the PDF that goes with this video shows dimensions of 4" and 4 3/4" for the column corners.

    Steve, your presentation is SUPERB - no 'ums' or 'ers' in your talking (thank God) and your presentation is alive and fun with lots of personality!! (Ever thought of being a TV presenter?!) Love your method too. I think you're pretty smart to be able to 'simplify' this and still have it look great. If you decide to light the interior and have the 'Police' signs light up etc. etc. PLEASE post it for us to check out. You're skills are an inspiration and I LOVE the way you do the 'pocket screws' so nicely (and invisibly). Great work. Thanks for posting!! (I'm trying to build a miniature version in Balsa and Basswood. Driving me nuts! Have wrecked TWO already! Third time lucky huh?)

    For everyone who asked below...a TARDIS has no practical use, is just for Doctor Who fans, which is by the way, a huge community all around the World...I am from Mexico and all I can say about Dr. Who is that it rocks!!! So basically, this is just a piece of decorarion for die hard fans, do no expect anything else...thanks Steve, this project was great, there are a lot of great ideas on how to build mine!

    Your video inspired me. My front yard, 2 acres, has my well in it and I always feared someone not seeing it would drive over it. So I needed a well cover, however the typical lighthouse would not do. So after watching your video I built a scaled down TARDIS, 3 1/2'x2'x2' with a jelly jar porch light on top and a small solar powered LED light. I made the signs with my 3D printer. For the windows I just painted the wood panels white and with the trim pieces it fools people. I did not go crazy with detail because very few people will get closer than 100', but it did turn out great and my wife even explains to uninformed friends what a TARDIS is.

      Doctor Who is such a popular show (which Steve has mentioned in prior videos that he is a fan..) the Tardis (Time and relative dimension in space.. aka time machine) is loved by all the whovians. Its like the Enterprise for Trekkies only much more practical to build ;) I've seen many turned into garden/storage sheds but the way he built it its quite easy to take apart again or move around which helps. I'd probably turn it into a little book nook myself.. The new season of Doctor Who is just starting which is why he posted this today.. just a fun homage to something a lot of his viewers have a common interest in. :)

    Awesome Steve!
    I've got a question to all Doctor Who fans. I've never watched the show, but I want to. Do I have to watch th show from the very beginning or is it possible to watch more recent seasons (and in this cas what season or year?)
    Thanks!

    • @AtlantaHoney54
      @AtlantaHoney54 10 років тому +5

      Start with Christopher Eccleston in the newer dr who and once all caught up then try to watch the classic who :) its all on netflix up to Matt Smith's farewell. Allons-y ;)

      @TheBearuk1 10 років тому +5

      definitely watch the new rebooted series first as AtlantaHoney said, it'll definitely give you a taste for the show. The older stuff can look a bit corny now if you don't watch it in the mindset that it was made in its time, the 60's stuff looks like most other scifi of the era and while it may not match up to the production values of Star Trek and the like it is still the best of British sci-fi...and as much as I love the new show Tom Baker is still the best Doctor of any of them! just my opinion of course...lol

      Alright thanks a lot! I'll sure give it a look, I've been told many times to watch Doctor Who. So from what is called "Series 1" on Wikipedia onward is that right?
      I hope it'll be up to my expectations! Actually I think it will hehe
      Thanks again

    WAY COOL!!!
    I am an "old school Whovian" from WAY back in the day. I am building this for the corner of the office, (Maybe the living room!)..
    I was bombed with the "recommend for me" Dr Who lights. All very cool and I'm making one as a night light for the "guest" bathroom. BUT, I kept thinking, "..... ain't they's gotta bigger 'un...". And Voilá!!! It's portable too!
