I fell asleep during ‘Nightmare on Elm Street. I had multiple nightmares about Ringwraiths chasing me, long before the books became the movies. The movies did a great job with the wraiths, by the way. 👍
It was Morgoth that lied to Ungoliant. He roped her in to eat the trees by promising that she could eat her fill. He fled after the trees were killed and she followed. She was not full, and wanted more. She sensed that he had objects that created a lot of light, and she wanted to eat those. Ungoliant had gotten so large by eating from the trees, that even Morgoth was afraid of her. He promised her the Silmarils, and eventually ended up giving her fake ones to eat. She sensed that he was lying to her and she tried to eat him with the silmarils. He then screamed so loud that all of his Balrogs came to the rescue.
@@The.Lore.SeekerYes that would be good. I enjoyed and learned more today. Besides Glaurung, I expected to see the “Watchers” or “Barrow-Wights” . Please, part 2.
I’ve got an audiobook on CD of The Children of Hurin. It’s read by Christopher Lee, and the voice he uses for Glaurung sends chills down my spine every time!
If they’re older than Sauron, and possibly Melkor, then they would’ve been enemies of Eru Illuvatar or used by him during the Song of Ainur to create the universe. So they wouldn’t be weak beings and could be a bigger threat than either dark lord ever was if they were set onto the surface.
My theory is that the Nameless Things (Ungoliant among them) are fruits of Melkor's discordant tones from The Music of the Ainur. Very likely, Melkor himself wasn't fully aware of what he was doing, so there are inumerable terrors out there in the world and in the void that no one (except Eru) knows anything about.
If you look carefully at the writing, Ungoliant wasn't actually a spider. She was an evil being who took a spider-like form. If you want to see something closer to what Tolkien likely intended, Jazza has a video where he drew her daughter Shelob based purely on book description. There are features mentioned like a neck, horns, and a stinger, none of which a spider actually has. Shelob's described more as a demonic monster whose closest resemblance is to spiders, with word like "most like a spider she was," indicating something that shares a lot of basic features but most definitely doesn't look the same as one. Jazza's drawing of Shelob going purely by the book writing is actually far more horrifying to see than just a giant spider, and it's worth looking at some of his stuff because he does a bunch of drawings based purely on writer description. Sometimes it's done with someone else choosing the character or creature, giving him some description in notes, and him just drawing whatever he's given, only getting to know what it is after he finishes. As a fun one, Cthulhu's original descriptions by Lovecraft are pretty much exactly what image comes to mind for most thinking of him.
The problem with that is its js his imagination as we've had fans draw the iron thrown from asoiaf yet grrm still saying it's not quite his vision several times the authors pov and the readers tho similar will still perceive 2 at times vastly different outlooks from a description of something.
@@Dokgo22 There's definitely room for a level of interpretation in exactly how the features look, but the basic creature is very visually distinct as what she is even if the original picture the author had in mind can't be confirmed. Not like the Nazgul's winged mounts, where further description was given outside the story and Tolkien compared them to pterodactyl type animals. Taking that basic outline and adjusting it to fit the book descriptions is gonna be very close to what was intended, with the only improvement being if the man was still walking around in order to draw it. Best monster description ever is Cthulhu. If you look carefully at everything describing him physically in the original writing, it adds up to be exactly the way people usually draw him. Almost no room in his description to vary too much.
@@renderlifestyle Yes, that's their interpretation of her mother choosing the form. Considering Shelob was born that way and stayed the same for centuries just getting bigger and fatter, I think it's inaccurate. I think Ungoliant was just drastically stronger in every way than her offspring, especially with Shelob being the only surviving one for unknown reasons.
Ungoliant was defeated when Melcor let out a scream of fear and pain so loud that his Balrogs heard it and they came to his rescue with their whips of fire. She wasn't defeated by Melcore's cunning and guile.
All the balrogs together could do nothing more than force her back. And the fact he was weakened means he was weak, she was not and he belonged to her.

Luthien is able to have her disguise and to infiltrate to get the Silmaril, all very convenient with the sudden dissappearing of Thuringwethil so... though Tolkien never says it, she died somehow but... why to hide that?!!) It seems that Tolkien hated to have openly ill-fates for evil FEMALE antagonists on Middle-Earth by some reason. He is so openly stating on male ones but female-ones besides on being very few on her own, their ill-fates are so AMBIGUOUSLY OPEN and off-scene that seems as if he was doing some sort of pro-feminist working there, thinking of this as missogynist issues rather that proper justice retailation on them but... seems that Tolkien felt into the naive narrow dychotomy of males prone to evil more than female, and to be rather apologetic on them being not so harsh or openly stating their proper ill-fate retribution at their end: all the very few evil females (Ungoliant, Shelob, Queen Beruthiel and Thuringwethill, and even Lobelia Sackville-Baggins, got very loose and vague ends for all the nasty evil deeds they did, and so VERY WASTED characters!!) He got the opportunity to make a good stand of a great woman of goodness on Luthien against an evil one on Thuringwethil but no... he MISSED A GREAT TIME!!
For the Nameless Things: You could’ve briefly explained Melkor interrupting the music of the Valar and causing discord, thus giving birth to the Nameless Things (revealing also that they’re only “older” than the Ainur in that they were in Arda before them).
Telvildo was (at least, partially) inspired by the 'Cait-Sìth', a Mythological creature from Celtic Folklore that took the form of a black cat with a white ruff, known for mischief and malice. Also the inspiration for Cait Sith in Final Fantasy VII 😉
Thanks very much for including Tevildo good Sir! I very much enjoyed reading of his early exploits in The History of Middle-Earth, Vol-II and though I of course prefer the final personage (Sauron), Tevildo's story has an adoring charm of its own.

Something with the kind of imagery and nightscape depicted herein. With conflicts between dark characters vs evil characters, lawful vs chaotic... Almost cthuluesque in vision.
And you know whats still one of the best writings of the book? Humans are humans here, there are no overpowerd humans that can solo a balrog (and no wizard are no normal humans). Its not a power fantasy (altough i enjoy those too), and there is no “perfect chosen one” its nations forming a front against ancient evil. Frodo might be “the one” thats needs to throw the ring into mount doom. But if he didnt have his friend with him at the end a new era of evil would be born. Its not the story about a small group saving the world, its a story about nations rising up helping the core group even when they fall apart.
Not sure I agree with you regarding the humans as the ancient Numenorians were meant to be super human and Aragorn obviously has some of those traits. But I think it's because Tolkien is just far more subtle with how he portrays power. It's not cheap and flashy and it's very much embedded in the earth, surroundings and spiritually. Which for me makes it far more powerful and intimidating than any other fantasy because it feels real and immersive

Perhaps these unknown and horrifying creatures served as the inspiration for H P Lovecraft's stories of Eldritch Cosmic Horrors such as Kuthulu and others ? Whatever they are or were some things are best left alone ; not spoken of ; and forgotten ! Nice UA-cam channel channel , I look forward to more forthcoming updated installments forthcoming soon.
@@paulgalligan1916100% In both iterations of the story Sauron/tevildo were both ‘taken by the neck’ by huan when defeated. Tevildo’s golden collar gives him power same as Saurons golden ring gives him power. Do you recon Tolkien did these as intentional nods to his older writings ?
It would be nice if the creators of the lord of the rings will create a background story of those so called Nameless things which was thought to be older than morgoth himself. I wonder what sort of dark primordial powers created those things and how powerful such creator was. Come to think of it, it might be a stand alone series of its own if it will be turned into movie. I can only imagine those ancient primodial heroes that will serve as archenemies of these Nameless things especially on how powerful they are as they were able to cast such powerful Nameless beings into the depths of the earth, never to be seen again and just become some sort of folktales among those dwelling on Middle Earth... 😊
The nameless things reminds me of Nidhögg from nordic mythology, who is like a dragon that gnaws the yggdrasil tree and is there from the beginning til the end of time
These are just the average Elden Ring enemy/boss. Great video btw, I love hearing descriptions and looking at illustrations of creatures from various media.
If a god was all powerful, he can’t be all good. And if he is all good, he can’t be all powerful. Eru Iluvarar cannot be all good, which results in your vampires and werewolves
@@ThurValEru told Melkor that everything he did was only because it was a part of his will. So, still a part of his ultimate plan. However, maybe his pride prevented him from admitting that things didn’t go according to his plan, and maybe he didn’t have as much control over creation as he made his children believe. Maybe there was creation of things that happened outside of Eru, and maybe there were primordial beings that coexisted with Eru
Had no idea a cat was supposed to be the villain instead of Sauron. The dark colored feline does symbolize supernatural and superstitious dread- with haunting aura of bad omens/ ominous misfortune.
And somehow, even amongst all these dark and twisted horrors, both known and unknown, Middle-Earth remains in a state of medieval stasis. Was there ever more than the exception of Numenor to challenge this statement?
I agree on one condition, he should not name the harfoots. He should just say how fearfull we should be things that are “allowed” to be canon. But are actually fanfic of the worst degree. Tolkien would jump up from his grave and become a (ring) wraith to haunt all the writers!
Tevildo would’ve most likely been a bogeyman of sorts among house cats and their kitten offspring, a monster to enslave them and kill their human owners that they loved as a parent (so theorized a friend of mine who’s a cat lover). Tolkien didn’t hate cats, but I can image he would’ve built up Tevildo as a creature that regular cats would fear and utterly hate.

Whatever they are or were some things are best left alone ; not spoken of ; and forgotten ! Nice UA-cam channel channel , I look forward to more forthcoming updated installments forthcoming soon.
If I saw Tevildo I would just "Psst psst psst" at him. He's so cute!
His weakness is catnip.
"Fairy tails were never about the monsters in them. They were about how we can kill them."
Excellent channel 👍🏻👍🏻
Tevildo was sauron..
Yep Sauron was Melkor cat tevildo was one of if i remembee correctly
But Tevildo is not Sauron. The cat got his golden collar from melkor before Sauron was even walking about Middle Earth
@Nicholas-nu4wy the isle of cats 🐈
The isle of wearwolves ..
It's an older version of the story...
Check it out..
@@AlexCj-k8v sauron is not melkor

In both iterations of the story Sauron/tevildo were both ‘taken by the neck’ by huan when defeated.
Tevildo’s golden collar gives him power same as Saurons golden ring gives him power. Do you recon Tolkien did these as intentional nods to his older writings ?
Yeahhhhhh I’ll watch this at 2 AM… What is wrong with me
Living on the edge 😜
Haha, you should become the scriptwriter. You're full of imagination and creativity!
@@The.Lore.Seeker lol why not? 😄
@@torreeric499 haha, you tell me ;)
The nameless things reminds me of Nidhögg from nordic mythology, who is like a dragon that gnaws the yggdrasil tree and is there from the beginning til the end of time
These are just the average Elden Ring enemy/boss. Great video btw, I love hearing descriptions and looking at illustrations of creatures from various media.
Where can I find this art? Its really pretty good.
Thank you! Most of the artwork is carefully created by me through midjourney, so it's on my Google Drive.
Tevildo has the one collar to rule them all
I always thought Red Maw would be a great band name
Mewlips?....a Gollum by any other name. Yes , precious, yes.
Today I learned that somewhere, at some point... A cat wronged Tolkien IRL 😂
Haha, epic comment
The balrog definitely scared off the unnamed things
A giant cat,? lol 😂
Imagine a cross over where you play as a Witcher in Middle-Earth.
If nobody bad was able to make life how did we get so many evil creatures? Who made that first werewolf? How’s vampirism work with multiple races?
If a god was all powerful, he can’t be all good. And if he is all good, he can’t be all powerful. Eru Iluvarar cannot be all good, which results in your vampires and werewolves
There is a theory, that evil beings came into existence, when Morgoth disturbed the great music
Melkor despised the fact that he could not create life. He therefore took great pleasure in twisting all forms of life that existed.
@@ehschlect That mfer abandoned middle earth
So Tolkien had something against cats, I take it? Prince of evil cats? Really?
I want to play lovercraftian action mmorpg!
There's no way all these artists just assumed Tevildo was exactly like a domestic cat, rather than a large felid of some kind
Tevildo is one of Sauron’s forms
I'm surprised that Ancalagon did not make it into the top 3.
Did Tolkien not like cats? Or was he playing off the old mythology of the black cat familiar?
Probably a bit of both
He had this evil queen with an army of black cats too. But her chief cat was actually white.
Really, that's new to me. Haha
I thought Ancalagon The Black was going to be featured.
John 14:6 ❤️
Im just happy they didnt make cat a main villain! 😅
Tevildo is actually the first, or one of the first forms of Sauron. Sauron didn’t overshadow tevildo, tevildo BECAME Sauron!
Prince of cats so cute
I may be wrong but I believe Ungoliant translates in Khazad, the language of the Dwaves, to "Big Hungie".
Will you brave the dar-
“Hell naw”
I’d be a lot more terrified of Glaurung over some cats
A cat ... A fucking cat ..
Tevildo IS Sauron in Tolkiens early writing
We need more dragons
After "Mewlips" and a Cat bad guy I had to check if this was an April fools video
It's a medieval fantasy
if you dont mind me asking where did you find most of these pictures? would love to save a few!
@7:45 @7:51 @8:04 @9:38 @11:01 @11:05
Why couldn’t Amazon adapt any of this lol
Another ending for Ungoliant is that Eärendel killed her.
I want the kitty tevildo and the puppy carcaroth
Huh, game devs and Amazon are really fumbling the bag with the mountains of lore.
You should add Harfoots. Those things and every other character in Rings of Power filled me with annoying dread when I wasted my time on that trash.
I agree on one condition, he should not name the harfoots. He should just say how fearfull we should be things that are “allowed” to be canon. But are actually fanfic of the worst degree. Tolkien would jump up from his grave and become a (ring) wraith to haunt all the writers!
What’s the name of the song that starts playing at about 2:20 ?
What if Ungoliant was one of the Nameless Things? Origins unknown, come from/dwell in darkness, older than the known history. Could fit
Oh, that's a very good question! Tolkien left her origins shrouded in mystery. One can only guess.
